Congrats to the Red Dragons and Franelia on thier win today vs my beloved BENGALS.  Mama said it would be days like this... and she was right. Gave up over 100 points and 54 free throws. Can't win like that.  Must play defense and get to the line ( 12 free throws tonite)!

Feeling good about  tommorrow since its impossible to play worse than we did today! Must bounce back!!!!

I love my BENGALS!

FranElia

Thanks bengalsrule, although I didn't contribute much to the 102 points (I scored 35 less than Kevin McMahon did).  ;)  Actually, I "scored" all of the points tonight for both teams (on the computer). Nice saying hi to you tonight, by the way.

Plattsburgh 97 Geneseo 85

Great Division III basketball on display last night at Memorial Hall in Plattsburgh. Both teams played well, and gave the fans their money's worth. The final 12 point margin was not indicative of how close this game was throughout.

The first half was a tightly played affair that saw numerous lead changes throughout the first 12 minutes of play. The Cardinals down, 18-17, took the lead for good on a layup by Shavar Fields off a nice assist from Ezra Hodgson with 8:47 left in the half. Hodgson then increased the Cardinal advantage on their next possession as he buried one of his patented 3 pointers from the corner. Each time the Cardinals opened a little daylight however, Geneseo's  Gordon Lyons seemed to have a response. The Blue Knights interior play in the opening half was outstanding and led by Lyons, who had 18 first half points, and Connor Fedge, who came off the bench for the Knights with 12 points in the period, the Cardinals couldn't shake loose from the visitors. Up 30-27 with 4:50 left in the half, Fields hit a jumper and Shamoy McIntosh sank 2 free throws to give Plattsburgh its largest lead of the period at 34-27. Once again Lyons led the Knights resurgence with back to back inside moves. Then, after McIntosh responded with another 3 pointer for the Cards, Lyons and Fedge continued their assault in the paint to narrow the deficit once more, to 37-35. Fields made a nice move inside for the Cards to build the lead back to 4 points and after a Geneseo miss, the Cards had a chance to extend their lead. However a turnover gave the ball to the Knights and Lyons struck quickly to make it a 2 point, 39-37 halftime score. McIntosh led the Cards with 13 points at the break and Fields had 10.

The 2nd half started well for Plattsburgh as they scored the first 5 points on a McIntosh triple and a Chris Manning drive to once again equal the largest lead so far at 44-37. Geneseo wasn't buying it though and Thomas Decker, with his first points of the game, hit 2 from the line and then buried a 3 ball, bookending an inside move by the Cards' John Perez. Then Gordon Lyons sandwiched another Perez layup with a pair of buckets and the Blue Knights continued to hang with the Cards at 48-46 with 16:42 left to play. Perez and the Knights' Matt Curry traded short jumpers right before  Shamoy McIntosh took over Memorial Hall. The junior guard out of Floral Park N.Y. started with a 3 pointer, followed that with a different kind of three pointer, on a layup and one (from a steal and feed by Chris Manning), drained a jumper, and after another Manning theft, McIntosh buried another jumper. Ten unanswered points by Mcintosh that opened up the first double digit lead of the night. With 13:18 to go the score was 60-48 but Geneseo, behind Lyons and Devon Anderson cut the lead to 6 and McIntosh hit his 5th shot in a row from downtown to build the margin back to 9 points. Back came the Knights with 4 points from Lyons, all from the line. Like two boxers, delivering big punches back and forth, the battle continued and just like the first half every time the Cardinals opened up a sizeable margin the Knights would respond. Plattsburgh's Perez with a hoop and harm play with 9 minutes left to extend the lead back to 8. Geneseo countered with back to back 3 pointers from Connor Fedge and Jon Cohen. The Cardinals still clinging to a 2 point edge with 6:09 to play, then made the final push. Another Cardinal 3 pointer, this one from Ed Corea, followed by 2 more inside basket from Perez, along with another free throw by him gave the home team some breathing room. McIntosh capped off the run with another jumper at the 4:07 mark and the lead was back to double digits. Geneseo never got closer than 7 points from that point on. Blue Knights started the foul parade with 2 minutes left but the Cards only extended the lead as they hit 8 of 12 down the stretch.

Shamoy McIntosh with a new career high of 33 points (12x21 fg, 6x10 3's, 3x4 ft) to lead all scorers. Shamoy also had 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

John Perez put up another double double with 17 points (7x12 fg, 3x4 ft) and a game high 11 rebounds, 5 of them coming on the offensive end. John scored 15 of his points in the 2nd half as he was as unstoppable in the paint for Plattsburgh then, as Lyons was for Geneseo in the 1st half.

Mike Mitchell came off the bench and added 12 points, (3x5 fg, 1x3 3's, 5x6 ft). He also had 3 dimes and 2 boards.

Ed Correa had 11 points (3x8 fg, 3x8 3's. 2x2 ft) 2 rebounds 2 assists and a block.

Shavar Fields scored 10 points (5x12 fg) (never went to the line but should have on numerous occasions), had 7 rebounds and 2 assists.

Point guard Chris Manning with an outstanding all around effort had 6 points (2x3 fg, 1x1 3's, 1x2 ft), 9 assists, 5 steals and 2 rebounds. Some nice feeds to energize the crowd were on display from Manning.

Ezra Hodgson with 8 points (3x4 fg,1x2 3's, 1x2 ft), 2 boards and 2 assists in 16 minutes.

Cards shot 35x65 from the field (53.8%), 12x24 from 3 point range (50%) and 15x22 from the line (68.2%) They had 36 rebounds to 37 for the Knights, but only 12 turnovers to 15 for the Knights. Geneseo shot 17x35 from the field (47.9%), but only 6x23 from long distance ((26.1%) and that was a big reason the Cards won the game as they doubled up the Knights on made 3 pointers. Knights were 9x12 from the line (75%).  Free throws were basically even until the Knights started the foul parade near the end of the game. The 2nd game between these 2 teams in Geneseo will be another battle to look forward too, I'm sure. Hopefully with the same outcome. :)

Gordon Lyons was a beast on the floor for Geneseo. He had 18 in the 1st half and wasn't slowed much in the 2nd half to finish with 29 for the game (13x17 fg, 3x5 ft). He tied Perez for rebounding honors with 11 and I made a spot for him on the All Conference team at season's end (Probably the 1st team).

Connor Fedge  added 18 points for the Knights (7x11 fg, 1x1 3's, 3x3 ft). He also had 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

Devon Anderson had 10 points, all in the 2nd half. (5x7fg) .

Thomas Decker added 6 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, and a steal.

Geneseo loses for only the 2nd time this year and falls to 6-2 overall, 0-1 in the conference. They will travel to Potsdam this afternoon to take on the Bears at 4 PM

Plattsburgh improves to 8-2 and 2-1in the YAC. They have moved up in the Massey Rating to #17 in the nation. The toughest game of the year to date could be upcoming this afternoon at Memorial Hall as they face the Brockport Golden Eagles at 4 PM. The Eagles are ranked #12 in the Massey Ratings and #31 in D3hoops rankings. This could be a possible early showdown for 1st place in the YAC when the dust settles after today's action.

Full slate of action today in the Conference.

Some quick picks as time is short.

Jan. 11

Buffalo State      Oswego State      4:00 PM

I'm going with the Bengals and hope they don't burn me two days in a row. Point spread favors the home team by 2. I'll take the Bengals to win 86-82

Oneonta State      New Paltz State      4:00 PM

Travel partners going at it. Spread favors the Hawks by 1 at home. I'm favoring the Red Dragons by 3 on the road  77-74 Oneonta

Geneseo State      Potsdam State      4:00 PM LS V A

After watching the Blue Knights last night there's no way I could pick the Bears today. Point spread with a big 15 point margin for the visitors. Brockport won by 18 last night, that seems reasonable today but I hope the Bears can spring the upset. Geneseo takes this one 85-70.

Fredonia State      Cortland State      4:00 PM LS V

Fredonia shouldn't find things any easier than they did last night against the Lakers. These Red Dragons though seem to play good against the good teams and not so good against the weaker teams. That's been the modus operandi in almost every game for Cortland. I don't think they lose this one though. Oddsmakers have them as a 20 point favorite. and they should cover that. I said should, but they won't, Cortland 78 Fredonia 63.

Brockport State      Plattsburgh State      4:00 PM

Featured game of the week as the two top ranked teams in the YAC clash for the first time this year. If past history is any indication (and it is) then this game will probably wind up as  classic nail biter. OT isn't out of the question either. Last year the Cardinals managed a rare sweep of the Eagles and both teams returned a lot of talent from those squads. I think that we can hold home court and the oddsmakers  have made the Cardinals a slight 2 point favorite. That's my choice as well and I see this one as a 80-76 Plattsburgh win.

Magicman. I'm sorry we could not make your faith in us worthwhile.  15 turnovers in the first half after a total of 17 Friday night, and we come up with another loss. Give Oswego credit. They played hard from start to finish. Boy how a long for another non conference game however that's not the way the win the Yac.  Buff state just has to get back in the gm and continue  to work hard and I believe that everything will work but self out

Hey that's what happens when you play in a league as tough as this 1!

Go BENGALS!!

magicman

No apology necessary Champ, I couldn't get a win from my Cards either and we had a 7 point lead with 4:30 to go.

I knew it was going to be a close game. The Bport boys are road warriors this year(8-1) with OT loss to strong SUNY Purchase squad. This is the year of the Eagle--They must keep the intensity, tempo up and pick each other up. It looks like they have alot of pieces pulling together. Congrats Eagles!!!!!

Brockport 85   Plattsburgh 78      Congratulation to the Eagles on a well played game. We hope to return the favor on Feb. 7th. ;)

The fans in Plattsburgh were treated to some great Basketball this weekend with the annual visits of Geneseo and Brockport. I was hoping for a weekend sweep and after we got by the Blue Knights only Brockport stood in the way of a 3-0 week that included a win over NESCAC foe, Middlebury. John Ivy and the Eagles put a slight crimp in my plans however, with a stirring comeback from a 7 point deficit late in the game.

The first half of the game was a typical slugfest with both teams grabbing 6 to 8 point leads and failing to hang onto them. Brockport, behind 6 quick points from Ivy got the early jump moving in front 14-6 and 16-9, but the Cardinals came charging back. Eddie Correa, who opened the game with a 3 pointer, hit back to back bombs that at first, tied the score at 16, and then gave the Cardinals the lead with 11:25 left in the half. Shamoy McIntosh hit three foul shots in two trips to the line and Corea dropped in another trey to boost the Cardinal lead to 25-18. Back came the Eagles as Brandon Caruthers drove the lane for a layup and Ivy followed with a pair of drives for 2 more buckets. A 3 pointer from Aaron White and a pair of free throws from Mike Gallagher once again evened the score at 29 each, with 5:30 remaining in the period. Alan Siergiej entered the game for Plattsburgh and scored their next 5 points on a pair of layups, with a free  throw to offset a 3 ball by Port's Bobby Bell. The Cards' Shavar Fields hit a jumper to extend the lead to 37-32 but Ivy once again brought the Eagles back with 6 points in the final 1:34, while Plattsburgh only managed a single frre throw from Fields and after 20 minutes the teams were deadlocked at 38.

The 2nd half found the teams trading baskets and featured 6 lead changes along with 4 ties in the first 6 minutes of action. Up 50-49 on 2 free throws from Ezra Hodgson, the Cardinals got another 3 pointer from Correa, an inside move by John Perez, a 2 pt jumper from Correa and a three pointer from Hodgson to open up a 7 point advantage at 60-53 with 11:18 to go. Ivy, Aaron White, and Caruthers all scored, the last on a 3 ball, to close the gap to 62-60. The Cards once again jumped in front on a jumper by Shavar Fields, a dunk by Xavier Thomas and another 3 pointer by Correa, his 7th of the game to make the score 69-62 with 8 minutes left. Eagles big man Patrick Coyle made 3 foul shots on consecutive possessions but Fields one upped him with back to back buckets for the Cards and the lead was 8 points, 73-65, with 6 minutes left. Caruthers nailed a triple and Shamoy McIntosh countered with a pair of free throws at the 4:47 mark to keep the 3 possession advantage for Plattsburgh. John Ivy took over and in 58 seconds he swished a jumper, drove in for a layup, (after a Matt Lee steal) and drained a 3 pointer and just like that the score was tied. It happened so quickly both the crowd and the Cardinals were stunned . I know I was, as I turned to the dean of sportwriters from my area, who was sitting next to me, and said, that Bob, is why he's a preseason All-American.

The Cardinals regained the lead on another inside move by John Perez. Then after the teams exchanged turnovers, they both had field goal attempts that missed, which resulted in a foul on Fields that sent Clifton Lyerly to the line. The next two plays dictated the outcome of the game more than any other. Lyerly made the 1st free throw but missed the 2nd one, however Patrick Coyle put his 6'11" frame to good use and tipped the missed free throw back in to give the Eagles a 78-77 lead. Plattsburgh, needing a score to slow down the Eagles momentum, instead had a turnover that resulted in a dunk by Lyerly. All Plattsburgh could manage in the 2 minutes that were left was a single free throw from Perez. The Cardinals were still alive however when Ivy, uncharacteristically, missed a free throw with 1:13 left in the game. That left it a single possession game at 81-78 and plenty of time to make something happen. The Cardinals missed a 3 point attempt with 1:05 to go and when Brockport got the rebound they opted not to foul, knowing they would get at least 1 more possession. McIntosh blocked Ivy's shot with 33 ticks left but Caruthers got the rebound, fired up a 3 pointer immediatly to avoid a shot clock violation, missed it and the ball went out of bounds off McIntosh. Cards were now left with no choice but to foul and Caruthers made them both. Plattsburgh missed another 3 point attempt and Ivy was fouled with 3 seconds left. he made them both for the final margin. Really though, the game was a 3 point difference until the final free throws.

John Ivy scored a season high 32 points, with 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. I've seen a number of preseason All-Americans play this year both in person and through webcasts. Ivy was chosen as a Third Teamer, but they made a slight mistake, he should be on the First Team. He's better than anyone I've seen so far and several of them were on the First Team.

Brandon Caruthers was the only other Eagle in double figues with 21 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Patrick Coyle had 9 points and 9 rebounds while Aaron White added 8 points.

Brockport had a slight edge in rebounding 39-37 and only had 10 turnovers to 19 for Plattsburgh. That last stat was a key reason that the Eagles walked out of Memorial Hall with the W. (Well that and John Ivy)

Free throws were also a big factor in the contest. Brockport went to the line often and didn't miss very many. At one point they were 17 of 18 and ended up 26x31 (83.9%). Plattsburgh was only at the line for 19 attempts and made 12 (63.2%). The Cards did outshoot the Eagles from the field, 28x60 (46.7%) to 26x62 (41.9%) for Brockport and from downtown, 10x22 (45.5%) for Plattsburgh to 7x24 (29.2%) for Port.

Plattsburgh was led by a new career high from sophomore Eddie Correa with 23 points, 21 of them on 7 long balls. Ed also had 2 rebounds 2 assists and a steal.

Shavar Fields had 15 points and just missed a double double with 9 rebounds.  John Perez also just a point shy of another double double, as he had 9 points and was the game's leading rebounder with  11 boards. John added 3 assists and 2 steals. Shamoy McIntosh had 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Ezra Hodgson, again with a solid game off the bench with 10 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Alan Siergiej with only 4 minutes of floor time had 5 points and a rebound.

Brockport takes over first place in the conference and is the only team without a loss in the YAC. They improve their record to 8-1 overall and I think, deserve a place in the D3hoops top 25. Mr. Massey also thinks they should be ranked and not just in the Top 25.  The Massey Ratings now have them ranked at #7 in the country with a strength of schedule ranked at #51. They just beat a Plattsburgh team that prior to Saturday's game, Massey had ranked #18 with a SOS of #20. With a 8-1 record, all on the road and their only loss a double OT affair at D3hoops #18 SUNY-Purchase (10-0), I believe it's time the voters of this website stopped looking at teams with 3 or 4 losses and give the Golden Eagles their place in the rankings. The SUNYAC has done very well this year with the non-conference portion of their schedule and the top teams in our conference have shown they can play with anybody.

The Eagles will return to the friendly confines of Tuttle North for the first time since (gulp!!) last February 16th 2013, (that's a heluva long time between home games ???...glad their schedule maker doesn't make out my Cardinals' schedule ;D) when they host Fredonia State on Tuesday January 14th at 8 PM

Plattsburgh falls to 8-3 overall, 2-2 in the conference.  The Cardinals are still ranked #25 in Massey's Ratings and will hope to improve on that figure as they are off until this weekend when they travel south to face New Paltz on Friday at 8 PM, then Oneonta on Saturday at 4 PM.
