Magic man....read your  post on the CAC board.  Could you let me know how you made your pledge...name wise...real or board handle.  Thinking about adding something to your pledge so to ensure the host wears your school T-shirt and get your HBC on the air to plead your case.  Has the school coach been on ?  Personal message will be ok.  Home phone is 301-869 3874.   Some Vandy and Midhoops payback somewhere in here.

Brockport finally gets some love.  Great job finally getting into the top 25.  I have learned something from these post.  The performance of a school is based on the performance of a conference in past tournaments not on the merits of the team in a new year.

That, of course, is not true either. The truth is there's an element of both in there and if your conference doesn't perform in March it's hard to just use conference performance as a barometer.

It's not a matter of Brockport being punished for past SUNYAC performances -- it's a matter of Brockport not being rewarded for them. Being the best team in an East Region that is about 1/12th of Division III doesn't necessarily mean a lot.

You guys may be remember the coaches used to do their Top 20 poll back in the day. Rather than ask their coaches to make difficult decisions about who was better than whom across regions, they just took the NCAA regional poll and shuffled it together. A voter was required to place the top team from each region in the Top 10 of his ballot, no matter what. So an Atlantic and an East (and back then, a South) team was always ranked highly, regardless of whether that was deserved. Our poll doesn't work that way.

Vestiges of that policy remain in the NABC All-American team, which is eight players, one from each region. Why should any region be limited to three All-American players? (Last year we named four East players, for example.)

All ten teams in action tonight should make for an interesting evening.

Fredonia State   at    Geneseo State      8:00 PM

Fredonia on a losing streak and still looking for their 1st win in the conference. Geneseo will see to it that they won't find it tonight. Teams are fairly even over the past nine games with the Knights holding a 5-4 edge. But Geneseo has won the last 3 and last year they were both by double digits. I see that happening  again and so doesn't the oddsmakers as the Knights are favored by a whopping 23 points. That margin may not be large enough as the Blue Devils average loss on the road has been by 26.6 points and only 1 of those teams, Brockport (won by 50), was as good as Geneseo.  Final score Geneseo 87 Fredonia 60, but it could be worse.

Oswego State  at   New Paltz State      8:00 PM

Ten days ago on January 11th, the Lakers were 4-1 and sitting all alone in 2nd place behind Brockport. I don't think they saw themselves at 4-4, in a tie for 5th place, with a 3 game conference losing streak on January 21st. Especially when one of those games was against a team they hadn't lost to, on any court, in 13 years. And tonight they face that same team, on the road, and a loss could leave them in 8th place. New Paltz couldn't keep up with the Cardinals over the weekend and almost blew the game against the Bears after leading by 14 points midway through the 2nd half. If the Hawks have hopes of making the playoffs, this is a must win game for them. The point spread gives the edge to the invading Lakers by 4, as the oddsmakers feel the revenge factor is quite prominent, since the last game was only a week ago. I don't think the Hawks will have to wait 13 years for their next win over Oswego, but I don't think they can win 2 in a row either...at least not at this time. Lakers split the season series and walk out of the Hawk Center with a 79-71 victory.

Cortland State   at   Oneonta State      8:00 PM    The Co-Featured Game of the Day

The Battle of the Red Dragons: The Sequel    If that sounds like Hollywood Hype, that's because it is. Visit the Red Dragons' website (the Oneonta variety) and that's what greets you in full page glory (minus the sequel bit). But then the Oneonta Red Dragons won the first round of this years' fire breathing spectacle, by draining 15 three pointers, to steal a win in overtime at Corey Gym. They are feeling their oats after ending a 5 game losing streak to the Cortland club. Cortland, after 2 years at or near the top of the standings, find themselves in a 5th place tie with Oswego and like the Lakers a loss could send them as far down as 8th place by the end of the day. Despite losing to Oneonta in the first matchup and playing on the road, the oddsmakers have made Cortland a slim 1 point favorite. This will be the Kevin McMahon show versus the Zach Mager show as 2 of the top scorers in the conference go at it once again. McMahon won the first battle but Mager's team won the war. They say that revenge is a dish, best served cold, but with all the heat emanating from these fire breathers, the only thing cold, tonight in Oneonta, will be the cars in the parking lot after the game. Inside Dewar Arena it will be RED HOT as the Cortland Red Dragons even the season series  and start a new winning streak by a score of 73-70.

Potsdam State  at  Plattsburgh State      8:00 PM

The North Country rivals meet for the first time this season and the teams are headed in opposite directions. The Bears have yet to win a conference game and could be headed for the worst record in the history of this once proud program. Potsdam has lost 10 straight conference games dating back to last year and they come into this contest with an overall record of 2-11. The return of big man Rob Duquette from a December knee injury has beefed up the offense and helped in the rebounding department but hasn't translated into many wins as the Bears are 1-4 since he re-entered the starting lineup. They were swept by the Cardinals last year and have lost 7 of the last 8 games against Plattsburgh. The Cardinals are coming off a pair of conference wins last weekend and have moved into the thick of the race with a 4-2 conference mark. They are presently in sole possession of 4th place and could find themselves all alone in 2nd place by the end of the day. The good news for the Cardinals, that spells trouble for the Bears, is that leading scorer, Shamoy McIntosh, will be back in action after missing most of last weekend with a minor injury. The Cardinals have been firing on all cylinders lately, as 1 or more players have set new career highs in the past 5 games. With 4 starters scoring in double figures Plattsburgh has a number of options that can take over a game. The oddsmakers favor the Cardinals by the largest spread of the night at 27 points. The Bears have lost nearly every conference game by large double digit margins, with the exception of their most recent loss, a 66-64 setback at New Paltz last Saturday. I don't think tonight will be any different.  Final score Plattsburgh 86 Potsdam 62.

Buffalo State  at   #23 Brockport State      8:00 PM      The Co-Featured Game of the Day

Fresh off their entry into the D3hoops Top 25 the Golden Eagles face an old rival that would like nothing more than to steal some Brockport thunder. I'm sure the Bengals faithful are as happy as I am that a SUNYAC team made it into the national rankings. Positive things occur for the entire conference when one of our teams receives nationwide recognition. Having said that, the Bengals will be trying as hard as they can, to hit the bullseye,  that's now been painted on the Golden Eagles back. Losers of 5 straight games to the Eagles over the past 2 years, the Bengal faithful want to see this series get turned around like it was in the 2010-11 season when Buffalo State defeated Brockport 3 times that year.

The oddsmakers have made the Golden Eagles a rather large 17 point favorite. At first glance this looks to be too many points but the last two regular season trips that Buffalo State has made to Brockport have resulted in a 94-70 loss 2 years ago and a 97-81 loss last year when the Bengals invaded Tuttle North Gym. The Bengals did manage to keep another recent visit under double figures when they lost in the playoffs to the Eagles 89-83 in 2011-12. Tonight's contest could feature as many as 4 All Conference performers going at each other with Brockport's excellent backcourt of John Ivy and Brandon Caruthers leading the charge for the Eagles. The Bengals will counter with  forward Justin Mitchell and guard Rod Epps. Brockport is a solid team from top to bottom. Not many teams in the YAC can bring in a 7 footer off the bench that can be effective. I watched the Eagles go toe to toe with my Cardinals in Plattsburgh and I was impressed. That 7 footer, Patrick Coyle, made the play of the game, in my opinion, went he tipped in a missed free throw by Brockport that gave them a 78-77 lead, instead of Plattsburgh having the ball and the lead, with 2:35 left in the game. That play changed the dynamics of the next play (since the made basket by Coyle allowed substitutions that wouldn't have occurred if the Cards had just grabbed the rebound) which resulted in a steal and a dunk that gave the Eagles a 3 point lead along with the momentum to salt the game away. And what can you say about Ivy. He's a preseason All American for a reason. His 7 consecutive points in 58 seconds to personally lift the Eagles from a 75-68 deficit into a tie was a thing of beauty (if you were a Brockport fan, not so much from my vantage point :'(

Buffalo State has an All American caliber player of their own in Justin Mitchell. Already named to the D3hoops Team of the Week earlier in the season Justin can bring it with the best of them. He went toe to toe with 1st Team Preseason All American center, Landon Gamble, from North Central College last month and had 18 pts, 5 rebounds and a block in that game. Gamble had 18 pts 4 rebounds and a steal. Justin was 6x9 fg, 1x1 3's, 5x6 ft, had 1 turnover and 3 fouls. Gamble was 7x12 fg, 4x5 ft, had 4 turnovers and fouled out. Buff State won the game 80-72 and Justin's 6 points in the final few minutes were crucial in the Bengals' win.

So there you have it the Co-featured Game of the Night. Despite the large pointspread, I have a feeling this game will be closer than 17 points. A coach I know said "the Bengals are scary... they have as much talent as anyone in the league and can beat anyone by 20 on any night." I can't pick them to go into Tuttle North however, and knock off the Golden Eagles. If the game was in the big house in Buffalo it might be different, although with Port's road record this year it might not matter. I have to go with Brockport by a score of 89-82.

Interested to see tonight's Buff State- Brockport matchup. Buff St is reaching the crossroads of their season with their back to back matchups against the (IMO) the two best teams in the conference while being right at the border of the playoff standings. Will Brockport rest on the laurels after finally reaching the top 25? Should be a good one tonight.

Well put there Hoops. Tonights game is all that and a bag of chips! I wouldnt miss this 1 for the world! ;)

Here's a copy of a post I did for the NESCAC board. I just substituted SUNYAC for NESCAC and New York and the East Region for New England

I don't know how many posters on this page watch Hoopsville. Maybe some of you do so on a regular basis, maybe you only do so when a SUNYAC coach is on, or just the coach of the team you support, but it is a great place to enhance your D3 knowledge about what's going on in other parts of the country.  If you can't watch it when it airs, usually on Thursday and Sunday nights you can always replay it at a more convenient time. You can find the links on the front page.

Dave McHugh is currently in the midst of a Hoopsville fundraiser so he can upgrade the equipment, make the video production better, take more road trips and maybe visit a college near you. I know that a lot of people on this board tune in to Hoopsville. I'm sure as D3fans we all would like to see the show continue and improve. We now have the opportunity to help out with a contribution that will benefit us all. Kind of like a public television contribution.

There are different levels at which one can contribute and Dave has offered some perks for each level. I chose the slam dunk level, since my size, as Bengalsrule, thebear, Vandy and middhoops will attest, has prevented me from ever getting one of those in a game. But whatever level you choose remember this: As fans of D3 basketball we're all better off because Hoopsville exists. I wouldn't want Dave to have to close up shop. None of us will benefit if that happens. I remember not so long ago that the D3hoops site crashed one night and it took a day or so before Pat and staff could put the pieces back together. The D3 world, from coast to coast, was in mourning and some of us were downright strung out, because we didn't have access to the one place we could go to and no one knew what was going on. A huge sigh of relief was heard when the site was up and running again and posters all over the place were stating the obvious...what would happen if there were no more D3hoops to go to?

Well that's kind of how I feel about Hoopsville. So lets all pitch in, from the posters down in the DC and Virginia area that love their NESCAC teams, to the posters out west who still come on the boards and tune into Hoopsville. Then of course, there's all the fans in the New York and East Region that could make a huge impact if they all gave a contribution at just the $10.00 level. That's less than you'd spend if you bought Dave a couple of drinks at the local watering hole if he showed up at your gym to do a live interview with your coach.

Think about it fellow posters but don't take too long. The Hoopsville Fundraising Project runs from now through February 9th, 2014

Here's the link to the page that will enable you to choose the amount you wish to contribute:

Thanks for your attention, now back to our regularly scheduled program.

PS: In looking at the list of posters that have already made contributions to the cause I see one name that stands out from this board.  Young Mr. dtrainderrick.cahill,  author of the post about the regional rankings right above this post,  who chose to contribute at the same level that I did... the Slam Dunk. Derrick must have been saving his allowance for a good cause and jumped on the Hoopsville bandwagon. Good for him. Now if some of the rest of you fellows would make a contribution so dtrain doesn't show this board up. ;D It doesn't have to be a big amount, lots of $10.00 contributions add up to a sizable amount. I heard Bengalsrule was going to start the ball rolling. ???

To view the list of contributors just click on the  "funders" link at the right side of the page. Both of my new friends from the NESCAC board  middhoops and Vandy74 also heard the call. Good job boys. You don't have to list your name or the amount you contribute if you so desire. The link is pretty self explanatory and they take charge cards. ;D How about it posters and lurkers lets help Dave out so Hoopsville gets better. It's a win win situation for Dave and us. 8-)

Gordon Lyons was named as the SUNYAC Player of the Week. I knew it was probably between him or John Perez.  Either one was deserving.

Lyons was the SUNYAC's choice.     Perez was mine I like mine better. ;D

Here's the YAC write up on Gordon:

Lyons' hot shooting led the Knights to three SUNYAC victories last week. Finishing the week shooting almost 70 percent from the floor, he averaged 22.3 points and 9.7 rebounds for the Knights. He led the way with a 25-point, 13-rebound performance for his seventh double-double of the season as the Knights dug out of an early 15-point deficit at Oswego. He also finished one point shy of his career high with 28 points in a win over Buffalo State.

Here's the magicman's write up on John:

John Perez opened with a career high of 28 points (9x15 fg, 10x13 ft) against New Paltz and added 6 rebounds, 5 assists and a block. The next day he continued to have a hot hand as he went 9x13 from the field to score 22 pts with 8 rebounds and 2 assists. For the week John shot 18x28 from the field (64.2%) and 14x19 from the line (73,6%) He had a total of 50 points for a 25 ppg average and had 14 rebounds for a 7.0 rpg average. He also had 7 assists.

Good week for both players.

Final scores:

Plattsburgh 73  Potsdam 58   I had this one 86-62 Plattsburgh. If the Cardinals could make a layup we'd a scored at least 86 Close with
                                           the Bears total

Oswego 64  New Paltz 52       I picked Oswego 79-71  New Paltz shot poorly, Oswego didn't make a single 3 pointer. ??? Must be the
cold weather. Nobody could heat up much less get hot. ;D

Brockport 84 Buffalo State 69  Game of the night, I had Brockport 89-82. Too much  Poison  John Ivy. Just 35 points tonight

Geneseo 79  Fredonia 63     I took the Knights 87-60 Blue Devils kept it respectable.

Cortland 72  Oneonta 67     My other game of the night. I had the Cortland variety winning the Battle of the Red Dragons 73-70 in a
thriller. It was a thriller and I was close, completing a 5 for 5 night.

Bengalsrule

Too much "poisonIvy" is right.  Had no answer for him in a game that started so well for the Bengals. Coach Faj tinkered with the starting line up and we came out up 10-2. Just couldn't keep it going. Even in the 2nd half when down by 6 midway thru, we foul a shooter then get called for a tech then turn the ball over inbounding  it and 6 points disadvantage turns to 12 down before we knew what happened! >:(

Congrats to Brockport for a well played game from start to finish. A 1-4 road trip ain't the way to make it to the postseason. Now we have 5 in arow at home plus the students are coming back this weekend, so I am encouraged. Especially if we can go 5-4 for the first half of the Yac season! Clearly that's a big IF with the mighty Cards coming to town Friday night! I know I definitely gotta get at least 3 more Blackjack tourney entry fees paid 4 by Friday :) !

Go BENGALS!

dcahill,
I got the personal message you sent me this afternoon regarding my choices for the regional rankings. I think it's a little too early to project them right now. There are at least two weekends of big games, yet to be played, that could have a major impact on where teams will be ranked.

Plattsburgh State could lose to Buff State this weekend and Oneonta St next weekend and drop like a rock before the first set of rankings is released. Likewise Fisher has to go on the road to play Naz, Stevens, and Hartwick all in the next 10 days. I don't see 3 wins there. Brockport's battle against Geneseo is upcoming as well that could affect some things. I'm still not sold on NYU. They played a fairly soft schedule to get most of those wins. With a loss to Stevens and both UAA teams they played over the weekend, I think they will suffer a few more losses before the the rankings make an appearance. Hobart has a big game coming up against Skidmore this Friday night. If Skidmore wins that, they will have swept Hobart making it less likely the committee would put them over the Thoroughbreds.

I'm just throwing out possiblities and perhaps all the teams on your list will continue to win, in which case they will all probably be ranked, and the order you have them in is the most logical at this time, but too many variables right now.

And speaking of your list, it certainly seems to me like that list came right out of the pages of the Massey Ratings. At least that's the order that Mr. Massey has those East Region teams as you go down his list. You wouldn't be taking a peek at those ratings now would you Derrick?  I know how inaccurate you consider them. ;D     Just funnin with you now...don't take it seriously!  ;)

Haha Honestly Magicman i looked at the SOS from massey not the actual Massey order. SOS looks about right on Massey Ratings. Thanks for your input

Hey dcahill.  There's nothing wrong with using Massey as a way of determining where east teams stack up!  It's a very usefull tool and more reliable than magicmans rankings ;D
