Crunch time at new Paltz.

Geneseo has come all theway back  and now leads 77-75 with 35 seconds left in the game.

Taylor Sowah is fouled and he makes both of them to tie the game up.

Geneseo takes a time out with 31 seconds left to play. The Knights inbound and New Paltz goes into a zone which causes the Geneseo coach to call another time out.

Geneseo takes a shot at the buzzer that rims out and the teams are headed to overtime.

Getting to the end of the Buff State game and the Cardinals break away from a 67-66 1 point lead  to slowly open  up a 79-70 advantage behind the career night of Xavier Thomas. Rod Epps tightened things up with a pair of three pointer to make it 81-76.

There is 45 seconds left to go and The Bengals foul Chris Manning. Manning makes them both and the Bengals counter with a Justin Mitchell layup.

Once again the Bengals foul and Xaxier Thomas goes to the line. Thomas makes 1 of 2 and the Bengals' Brad Doyley is fouled and makes them both to make it 84-80 with 24 seconds to go.

Bengals foul Shavar Fields and he drops tham both through to make it 86-80. bengals miss a 3 pointer and foul Thomas again who makes 1 of 2 and Bengal come down and fire up another 3. That one misses the mark but Doyley is fouled by Thomas and makes 1 of 2. Mitchell then tips in the missed free throw to make it 87-83. He is fouled on the tip in but misses the free throw and the game goes final.

In another heated contest that almost had huge implications, the Brockport Golden Knights held off another upset minded team, as they overcame a 79-78 Red Dragon lead with 30 seconds left to play. With Brockport leading by a 78-76 score, Oneonta's Jack Dignan was fouled on a 3 point attempt with 30 seconds left on the game clock. Dignan promptly swished all 3 free throws to give Oneonta their first lead since midway through the first half.

Brockport missed a three point attempt with 23 seconds left but got the rebound. they missed another 3 pointer with 16 seconds left and Oneonta corraled the rebound. After a pair of timeouts, Oneonta committed a turnoverwith just 9 seconds left in the game. Just enough time for Mr. Ivy to do his job. Bobby Bell with the steal and John Ivy with the layup and one to open up a two point 81-79 lead.
The Red Dragons had one last chance at the upset but their 3 point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark and Brockport exhales and walks out of Dewar Arena with an 81-79 win.

Plattsburgh State 87  Buffalo State 83

One thing we learn as we go through life...there's always the x factor to consider. You never know when it will make an appearance but one thing is certain, if you ignore it, you will surely feel its presence. Tonight Buffalo State felt the X factor and it would prove to be their undoing.

Xavier "Xman" Thomas came off the bench for the Plattsburgh State Cardinals tonight to register career highs in points, rebounds, field goals made, free throws made, 3 pointers made, field goal attempts, free throws attempted, 3 point attempts, free throw percentage, and 3 point percentage. In other words he had a heck of a game as his double double of 21 points and 12 rebounds were team highs, plus he did his damage in only 22 minutes of court time. Most impressive was the fact that he played the final 13 minutes of the game with 4 fouls and scored 12 of his 21 points along with 8 of his rebounds after he picked up that 4th foul. An amazing stat is the time frame that Thomas picked up his fouls in. He entered the game in the first half at the 11:44 mark and played most of the remaining half until the 2:48 mark, when in a matter of 40 seconds the zebras whistled him for 3 fouls. I don't think anyone this year, in any game, at any level, has had 3 fouls called on them in such a short time span. To make matters worse Xavier entered the game in the 2nd half, for the first time at the 13:41 mark.  35 seconds later the refs hit him with his 4th foul. I wasn't able to watch this game as Buff State had no video crew available, but I do intend to find out what the people on hand felt about those calls. I'm surprised the Xman didn't get a technical, complaining about the harsh treatment by the officials but maybe he deserved those calls, I don't know, it just seemed out of whack. Xavier was 7x13 from the field, 2 x3 from long distance and 5x8 from the line. He also had 2 steals and a block.

Plattsburgh had a number of other players that were major contributors to the cause tonight. Shavar Fields had 17 points, 7 rebounds 2 steals and 1 assist. Ed Correa the SUNYAC's leader in 3 point shooting continued his success from downtown as he totaled 15 points all on 5 long range bombs. Ed has now totaled 42 triples for the season and is the leader in that category, despite playing less games than the 2 players closest to him.

John Perez had 13 points. 7 rebounds and 2 assists, while Shamoy McIntosh added 8 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist. Point guard Chris Manning, almost matched his career high of 11 assists, that he set last year, also against Buffalo State. He added to his conference lead  tonight with 10 dimes, to bring his total for the year to 81. He also had 6 points. 4 rebounds and 4 steals.

The Cardinals had a pretty good night shooting in the Big House as they were 26x53 (49%) from the field. They were 10x19 from 3 point land (52.6%) and an amazing (for the Cards) 25x30 (83.3%) from the line. The astounding irony of that statistic is the fact that Manning and Thomas, the 2 worst free throw shooters on the team, were 6x6 (Manning) and 5x8 (Thomas). Between them they were 6 x8 down the stretch when the Bengals had to foul. The Buff State coaches did their homework and fouled the right players but those players came through tonight when the pressure was on.

The Bengals got a big effort from Justin Mitchell who was the leading scorer in the game with 24 points. Justin completed his double double by capturing rebounding honors as well, as he crashed the glass for 15 boards, including 9 on the offensive end. Justin has already made my 1st team All Conference team. He added 3 assists and 2 steals and kept his team in the game with big baskets time after time. Rod Epps was close behind with 20 points and led a charge near the end with 8 straight points, that kept the Cardinals in range. Rod added 3 rebounds,1 assist and a steal.

Chris Boyd has his career high tonight as well, as the  dropped in 16 points on 5x9 shooting with all 5 field goals coming from behind the arc. Chris added 2 rebounds and 3 steals in 22 minutes of court time. Legree Kirkland was the other Bengal player in double digits with 10 points on 5x7 shooting.

Buff State shot 31x68 from the field (45.6%), 9x25 (36%) from distance and 12x22 (54.5%) from the stripe. The Cardinals won the rebounding battle 41 to 34, while the Bengals had less turnovers than the Cardinals 14 to 21.

Buffalo State falls to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in conference play.  They will welcome the Potsdam Bears to the Sports Arena on Saturday afternoon,

Plattsburgh improves to 12-3 and 6-2 in the YAC. They will travel to Fredonia to try for the sweep of the western New York teams this weekend. Tonight was the first time that Plattsburgh has defeated the Bengals in Buffalo since January 12th of 2008.

I almost nailed this one as I predicted a Cardinal victory by an 85 to 82 score. If Brad Doyley makes his 2nd free throw with 4 seconds left, then Justin Mitchell doesn't get a tip in and the Bengals end up with 82 points instead of 83. My Cards got 87 instead of 85 because Manning and Thomas defied the odds shooting free throws. ;D

Way to hang tough Eagles--O-State always tough at home and the officiating usually doesn't help out the visitors. Good win!! Don't sleep on New Paltz as they got some game and looking for the upset!!! Back home in Florida and rooting for the "BEAST of the EAST." Make us proud!!!!!

By the way, Poison Ivy, make the Magicman proud and drop another 30 spot on the boys from New Paltz. Got to give Magic some Props!

Brockport 81 Oneonta 79

At the end of the season if the Oneonta Red Dragons fail to make the SUNYAC playoffs, there's a good chance that tonight's loss will be a major reason why. The Red Dragons will look back at this game as the one that got away. With a one point lead and possession of the rock with less than 10 seconds on the clock, about the only thing that could go wrong would be a turnover. Enter Mr. Murphy and his law book. Brockport's Bobby Bell tipped the ball away from Oneonta's Zach Mager and John Ivy corralled it. Ivy headed for the Brockport basket and was fouled hard as he went in for the layup. The ball went in, Ivy completed the 3 point play, the Red Dragons missed their final shot and Murphy's law had struck again.

The Ivy and Bell heroics were necessary after Oneonta's Jack Dignan was fouled with 30 seconds to play while attempting a 3 pointer. Dignan calmly stepped up to the line and drained all 3 free throws to give the Red Dragons the lead. Brockport missed 2 chances to regain the lead and when Oneonta's Dan Lee got the defensive rebound with 16 seconds left, it certainly looked like Oneonta was on the verge of pulling off the biggest upset of the SUNYAC season.

I stated this in a post on January 21st when I was talking about the players that I thought would be considered for the Player of the Week for Jan 13th through the 19th:    " I think John Ivy's POTW will be after the games that he plays this week, as I see him putting together 3 huge games."

Those 3 huge games I was talking about have resulted in Ivy scoring 35 points against Buff State on Tuesday and 30 points last night against Oneonta. If I was the coach of New Paltz I'd hire the guy that Tonya Harding hired to club Nancy Kerrigan's knee. I heard he's out of jail and looking for work. Seriously though, John Ivy is putting up some big numbers this week, just to prove that the magicman's crystal ball really can see into the future. And I thank him for making me look so good. ::) 8-) I think he's already a lock for the D3hoops Team of the Week, regardless of what he does this afternoon. He will have another big game though and a 3rd straight 30 point effort isn't out of the question. John may decide to be the set up man today, since he's scored so much this week, and may want to get his teammates more ink in the scorebook. However he plays it, the Hawks will get their dose of poison Ivy this afternoon as it has spread from Buffalo to Oneonta to New Paltz.

Ivy scored his 30 points against Oneonta by going 10x20 from the field, 5x9 from long range, and 5x5 from the line. He had 4 rebounds 1 assist and a steal. Matt lee had a solid all around game with 12 points, a game high 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Patrick Coyle also had 12 points shooting 6x9 from the field. He grabbed 7 rebounds and had 3 blocks. Bobby Bell only had 6 points, but added 2 rebounds, an assist and 3 steals, none bigger than the one with less than 10 seconds to play, that resulted in the game winning basket.

#23 Brockport improves to 13-1 overall, 7-0 in the conference, and extends their unbeaten streak to 12 straight. They shoot for number 13 at 4 PM today at the Hawk Center against New Paltz. The Golden Eagles with a win today could possibly move up several spots in next week's Top 25 poll.

Oneonta was led by their usual suspect Zach Mager who scored 19 points, had 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Mikey McElroy had 16 points and 8 rebounds with a block. Jackson Zuvic  also had 16 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Jack Dignan had 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 points that should have included the game winning point.

The Red Dragons fall to 8-8 overall and 5-4 in the conference. They will face Geneseo today at 4 PM and the good news is, that even if they lose to the Knights today, they will still be in sole possession of the 6th and final playoff spot in the conference.

4 games scheduled for today at 4 PM:

Geneseo State  at  Oneonta State

The Knights survived 1 upset bid yesterday and the Red Dragons lost a big opportunity at another upset bid as well. Will the team that got lucky, Geneseo,  lose to the team that didn't, Oneonta? The Knights have won 5 of the last 6 games in this series but Oneonta has proven with their play against Brockport yesterday that they can hang with the best in the YAC. The point spread favors the visitors by a slim 4 point margin and the Knights have to be feeling good that they were able to come back from such a large deficit so late in the game yesterday. I'll go with Geneseo to win their 7th game in a row and keep sole possession of 2nd place. Knights win 78-73.

Brockport State  at  New Paltz State

See the above description. One lucky team, Brockport, escaped with a W, the other team, New Paltz, wish they could get a do over. Eagles will be flying high today as John Ivy puts the finishing touches on his Player of the Week campaign. I sure hope the SID at Brockport nominates John for the D3hoops Team of the Week. I don't even think he needs that big of a game today to make that team, with what he has already accomplished this week, so far. Hawks' hopes for a playoff spot took a big hit yesterday as they need to win a couple of games over the upper eschelon teams to gain admittance. The win over Oswego helped but to give one away that looked to be in the books as a W, can hurt for a while. The pain will likely continue for a while longer with the streaking Eagles in Hawk Center, looking for their 13th consecutive win. The oddsmakers think they'll get as they have been installed as an 18 point favorite. I see some big numbers here and think the Eagles will ground the Hawks....something like 92-76, to keep the streak alive.

Potsdam State  at  Buffalo State

The Bengals, as my friend from Buffalo suggests, won't be in a welcoming mood when the Bears roll into the Queen City. Losers of 5 of their last 6 conference games have placed a premium on W's for the Bengals. Oneonta has a one and a half game lead for the final playoff spot and Buff State can reduce that margin to a half game by the end of the day. A Bengals' win here coupled with a Geneseo win over Oneonta will tighten up the race for that final playoff spot considerably. Potsdam has to be feeling pretty low right now, as they were handled by the other conference team that had yet to break into the conference win column. Their job won't be any easier tonight against the Bengals, who have won 10 straight games over the Bears. The last time Potsdam defeated Buffalo State was just over 7 years ago on January 19th 2007. This losing streak will continue for a while longer. The point spread has the Bengals favored by 16 points and the Bears will be hard pressed to keep it that close. I see this one getting out of hand early as the Bengals will press from end to end and the Bears haven't responded well to that style of play. I think this one will end up a 94-70 Buff State win.

Plattsburgh State  at  Fredonia State

The Cardinals need to take care of business today to keep pace with Brockport and Geneseo who should remain in front of them at days' end. They can't afford a stumble here that would  widen the distance between the top pair. Fredonia is finally on the board in the SUNYAC but they will find that tonight's opponent has a few more weapon's in their arsenal. The oddsmakers have rated Plattsburgh as an 18 point favorite, but the Cardinals have a way of playing down to the competition. I've watched them do that on several occasions already this year, most notably on this past Tuesday night. Cards won both games last year and have won 9 of the past 14 contests going back over the past 7 years. They will add to that total this afternoon as I see them winning this game by an 87-74 final.

Plattsburgh 38   Fredonia 23 at the half.

Blue Devils broke on top  and held an early 15-11 lead but the Cardinals used a barrage of 3 pointers by 5 different players and they went on a 21-1 run that doubled up the Bule Devils at 32-16 with 6:09 left in the half.

Cardinals were led by John Perez with 9 points and 7 rebounds. JP even drained a 3 pointer in the Cards big run. He never even takes a 3 point shot say much less make one. Ezra Hodgson had 6 points while Shamoy mcIntosh and Chris Manning both had 5.

Fredonia was led by Tyrone Clark with 11 points.
