Buffalo State hangs on and defeats upset minded Potsdam State 68-56 by outscoring the bears 15-3 in the final four + minutes. Tied at 53 the Bengals got a layup from Brad Doyley and back to back jumpers from Lovell Smith to open up a 5 point lead at 59-54. Twice the Bears would cut it to 3 points but couldn't get it any closer. The Bengals hit 3 of 4 from the line and both Chris Boyd and Justin Mitchell got loose for a layup and a dunk to end the game.

Legree Kirkland led the Bengals in what I think was a career high for him of 22 points. He completed his double double with 11 rebounds. The 21 points made him the game's high scorer and his 11 boards were1 shy of tying the Bears' Brandon Williams with 12. Justin Mitchell had 11 points and 4 rebounds while Rod Epps had 11 points and 3 rebounds.

Potsdam had a big night from Rob Duquette with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Zac Adams added 17 points with 8 rebounds 3 assists and a block. Brandon Williams managed a double double with 11 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.

With the win the Bengals move to within a half game of the 6th and final playoff berth in the YAC.

Final score
Plattsburgh State  77  Fredonia State 42.

Cardinals made short work of the Blue Devils once they got it in gear. A 21-1 explosion was the primer and they just coasted the rest of the way. Coach Curle went to his bench early and often as the Cardinal reserves managed to put in at least 5 minutes or more of playing time.

Alan Siergiej who scored a career high 14 points led the Cardinals in scoring as he was 6x9 from the field and 2x2 from the line. Alan is the 8th different Cardinal to lead the team in scoring this season. That is just an amazing stat.  Alan was also the 7th Cardinal in the past 18 days to set a new career high in points scored in a game.  John Perez had 13 points, a game high 8 rebounds 2 assists 2 steals and a block in only 19 minutes on the court. No Plattsburgh starter played more than 24 minutes and 11 of the 13 Cardinals had double digit minutes. Shavar Fields, Ezra Hodgson and Chris Manning all scored 8 points before an early exit. Freshman Vaughn Dweck made the first 3 pointer of his collegiate career to give the Cardinals another game with at least 10 made 3 pointers. It's the 6th time in the past 8 games they have made that many.

Cards shot 47% from the field (28x59), 47 %from long distance (10x21) and 91.7 % from the line (11x12) Both teams had 13 turnovers and the Cards had 41 rebounds to 36 for the Blue Devils.

Fredonia was led by Tyrone Clark who set a Fredonia school record last night with 45 points against Potsdam. Tonight he once again came out of the gate firing away and scored 7 of the Blue Devils first 15 points, in the initial 5 minutes of the game. For the remaining 35 minutes he was held to just 6 points to total 13 for the game. He also had 5 rebounds and was the only Fredonia player in double figures. John Kovach had 5 points and tied for the game high in rebounds with 8. Fredonia only shot 23.2% from the field (13x56) and was even worse from long range making 9.1% of their attempts as they went 2x22 from behind the arc.

Plattsburgh improves to 13-2 overall and 7-2 in the YAC. They are in third place, a half game behind Geneseo and have a 2 game lead on Cortland and Oswego. They will return to action next weekend when they host Oneonta and then New Paltz at Memorial Hall.

Fredonia falls to 4-12 (1-8) and will face Buffalo state on Tuesday in the Queen City.

Here's a result that will make a certain Bengal smile. Carthage has just beaten #4 Illinois Wesleyan 80-73. I mentioned to my friend from Buff State that I picked Carthage in the CCIW pick em league to beat IWU. I told him that Malcom Kelly was going to have a big game and the Redmen were going to pull off the upset. Kelly finished with 25 points to lead all scorers. This is the 4th time that Carthage has beaten a ranked team this year and 3 of those teams were ranked in the Top Ten at the time that Carthage beat them.
Illinois Wesleuan, Washington U and Calvin College. They also own a win over Wheaton College when they were ranked.

Buffalo State currently in 7th place in the conference owns a 67-65 win over Carthage on a neutral court, with Malcom Kelly in the Carthage lineup.

Pat Coleman

Probably not too surprising -- Carthage is 8-2 at home (one of the losses to a scholarship school) and 4-4 away from home. Don't think anyone on the CCIW page is ever too surprised when a team loses on the road.

It's hard to win on the road in most conferences. We certainly know, here in the SUNYAC, how important it is to protect home court.

It's interesting to note that while no one on the CCIW page is surprised when a team loses on the road, everyone in the CCIW Pick Em League chose Illinois Wesleyan to win that game against Carthage. Everyone except, yours truly. ;D

It's also interesting and in support of your statement, that all 4 home teams in the CCIW won on Saturday, even though 3 of them were home dogs. Only Wheaton was favored to win at home. #13 Augustana, #4 Illinois Wesleyan, and Millikin were expected to win on the road. They were all favored from 8 to 14 points but failed to get the job done.

Carthage now stands at 12-6 for the season. Three of those 6 losses came before Malcom Kelly rejoined the team in December.

Brockport State 78  New Paltz 69

This was another closely contested affair that featured great back and forth play throughout the first half. Brockport's John Ivy continued his outstanding run of the past week as he opened up with 9 of the Golden Eagles first 11 points to stake his team to an early 11-4 advantage. An 8-0 run by the Hawks reversed the lead but Ivy scored again to put Brockport back in front and the tone for the rest of the period was set. Five ties and seven lead changes would occur until the Hawks, down 32-31, with 4:25 left in the period scored 7 unanswered points to take their biggest lead at 38-32. Ivy made 1 of 2 from the line for Brockport, but the Hawks got 5 more points on a Keegan Donovan 3 pointer and a Taylor Sowah jumper, to open up the first double digit lead of the stanza at 43-33 with 1:09 remaining. The Eagles scored the last 3 points of the half and found themselves trailing 43-36 at the break.

Brockport was still down by 10 points at 50-40 several minutes into the 2nd period when the Eagles finally found the next gear. All 5 players on the floor scored over the next 5 minutes as the Eagles ripped off 15 straight points, the last 2 on a John Ivy layup, to take a 55-50 lead with 11:44 remaining. Kevin Roach finally stopped the bleeding for the Hawks with a basket on their next possession but Brockport would get a layup by Brandon Caruthers, a steal with another layup by Clifton Lyerly, and after the Hawks came up empty again, Ivy drained a 3 pointer to make the Brockport advantage 62-52 with 10:10 on the clock.

The Hawks tried to come back and managed to cut the lead to 4 points at 66-62, and 68-64,  but each time Mr. Ivy was there with a score to prevent them from making it a one possession game. Ivy's last field goal with 2:47 left in the game gave the Eagles a 70-64 lead and they would score their final 8 points from the line as they made 8 of 10 from the stripe down the stretch.

John Ivy scored 27 points to lead all scorers as he once again shot at least 50% from the field. (10x18 fg, 2x5 3's, 5x6 ft) He added 3 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks, and 1 assist. Brandon Caruthers had 13 points (5x10 fg, 1x4 3's, 2x3 ft), with 4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 assists. Clifton Lyerly had 11 points and 5 rebounds.

Brockport was 30x62 (48.4%) from the field, only 4x18 (22.2%) from 3 point range and 14x23 (60.9%) from the line. They lost the rebounding battle to the Hawks by a 39-33 margin but only had 13 turnovers to 23 for New Paltz.

New Paltz was led by Taylor Sowah with 17 points (7x16 fg, 0x1 3's, 3x7 ft), 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Zach Cone-Douglas had 12 points and 3 rebounds off the bench. Keegan Donovan had 11 points and 5 rebounds as he hit 3 of 4 from long distance. Andrew Joseph had 8 points and 5 assists while Nick Taldi added 8 points and 4 rebounds.

The Hawks shot 27x58 from the field (46.6%), 7x14 from long range (50%) and 8x15 (53.3%) from the stripe.

New Paltz falls to 6-11 overall and 3-7 in conference play. The Hawks are now in 8th place in the standings, 2 full games behind 6th place Oneonta. They will be back in action next weekend when they travel to the North Country to face Potsdam on Friday night and Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon.

#23 Brockport wins their 13th game in a row to up their record to 14-1. They remain undefeated in conference play at 8-0 and after playing 12 of their first 15 games on the road the Eagles will enjoy a "lengthy" home stand of 4 straight games starting with Cortland on Tuesday the 28th at 8 PM. Geneseo will follow on Saturday Feb. 1st, as the two teams will make up an earlier contest that was postponed.

Preseason All American John Ivy is certainly living up to his billing. The Brockport star did make my crystal ball look pretty good as he completed a monster week that I predicted last Sunday he would have.

There is no reason to even look at anybody else's play in the conference as the Player of the Week in the SUNYAC belongs to Mr. Ivy.

Here's John's stats for the week in which his team went 3-0:

Points scored:  35 vs Buffalo State....30 vs Oneonta....27 vs New Paltz

92 points for the week  30.7 ppg average

32x61 from the field for 52.4%

9x20 from 3 point range  45%

19x20 free throws   95%

13 rebounds  4.3 rpg average

He also had 5 steals, 2 blocks and 2 assists.

Hopefully the Brockport SID will nominate John for the D3hoops Team of the Week.

John, don't slow down until February 7th. Hopefully Coach Dunne will give you the night off on that date. ;)

scooterman, or may I call you Scott?

D3hoops doesn't have a Player of the Week they have a 5 man Team of the Week.

Although if they did have a  Player of the Week, then John "Poison" Ivy would be my choice, for that award, this week. 8-)

PS: How's the weather in Tampa? When you told me several years ago that you were retiring and moving to Florida, I didn't really pick up on the retiring thing and just assumed you were relocating to the Sunshine State. I had it my mind that you were a young fellow a few years removed from Brockport State. Now I learn that you really are retired and I'm guessing it's not because you won the lottery. So apparently you may not be as old as the magicman, but a spring chicken you ain't. ???  Who knew? ;D

scooterman

Magic-You may call me Scott, if you prefer, and I am not a spring chicken by any stretch of the imagination. Chilly down here in Florida but on the links today in the 60s. If it gets in the 50s; we dress like we are going to a snowball fight--LOL. It is great to be back on the board and no D3 basketball in Florida. All D2 conferences and a variety of other hoops. Football is the priority down here and B-ball an afterthought in my experiences to this point. I hope this is the year for the SUNY's, and I am enjoying the Bport spirit. I miss those days!!!!

The new D3hoops Top 25 poll came out Monday evening and Brockport State has moved up 3 places from #23 to #20. A 3-0 week by the Golden Eagles has seen their point total go from 78 to 140.

Geneseo State and Plattsburgh State are both in the Others Receiving Votes. Geneseo is getting 6 points and Plattsburgh has 1 point.
No other East Region team is mentioned.

As expected the SUNYAC Player of the Week for the week ending 1-26-14 is John Ivy from #20 Brockport State. Hopefully John can receive Team of the Week honors from D3hoops and POTW honors from the ECAC.

Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:

John Ivy had another strong week for the Golden Eagles. Ivy tied a career-high 35 points against Buffalo State on Tuesday evening, helping Brockport beat the Bengals after falling behind early in the game. Ivy hit a last second game-winning shot on Friday night against Oneonta. Against New Paltz he helped spark a second half come-back, helping Brockport remain undefeated in conference play. In three games, Ivy averaged 30.7 points per game. He shot 45% from long range and over 50% from the floor, as well as only missing one free throw. Ivy's performance on Saturday also helped him reach a total of 1,012 career points in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) regular-season games, only the fifth player from any conference team to reach 1,000 career conference points.
