As expected the SUNYAC Player of the Week for the week ending 1-26-14 is John Ivy from #20 Brockport State. Hopefully John can receive Team of the Week honors from D3hoops and POTW honors from the ECAC.

Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:

John Ivy had another strong week for the Golden Eagles. Ivy tied a career-high 35 points against Buffalo State on Tuesday evening, helping Brockport beat the Bengals after falling behind early in the game. Ivy hit a last second game-winning shot on Friday night against Oneonta. Against New Paltz he helped spark a second half come-back, helping Brockport remain undefeated in conference play. In three games, Ivy averaged 30.7 points per game. He shot 45% from long range and over 50% from the floor, as well as only missing one free throw. Ivy's performance on Saturday also helped him reach a total of 1,012 career points in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) regular-season games, only the fifth player from any conference team to reach 1,000 career conference points.

Already done -- he's on the team!

Thanks for the heads up, Pat. Looks like there were some great individual achievements last week across the D3 landscape. Glad John could receive such an honor.

The ECAC POTW award could be icing on the cake for John and equal Buffalo State's Justin Mitchell who won all 3 awards in the same week earlier this season. That announcement should come out tomorrow.

Magicman...when you know an approximate time period wrt to Plattsburgh's time on Hoopsville...on Thursday.....let the boys on the CAC board, VANDY, MIDDHOOPS KNOW.   Since it is a special 12 hour show...difficult for many to hang around to see your school honored :)

Three games on tap for tonight in conference play.

Oswego State  at  Geneseo State    8:00 PM

Quick turnaround for these two teams as they just met in Oswego 10 days ago. The Knights came away with a narrow 66-62 win on that night and look to sweep the season series for the first time since the 2009-10 season. The Lakers have won 5 of the past 7 meetings but are 7 point underdogs in tonight's contest. I think the Knights get that season sweep as they win this one 74-70.

Cortland State  at  #20 Brockport State   8:00 PM

The Golden Eagles are on a roll and now they start their longest homestand of the season with the first of 4 straight games in Tuttle North Gym. Winners of 13 straight games and holding down the #20 spot in the D3hoops national rankings will put a target on the back of the Brockport team that the rest of the SUNYAC teams will be aiming for. Cortland is tied for 4th place in the conference but a loss tonight could hurt them with a trip to Buffalo State scheduled for this weekend. The Bengals, with a win tonight, could pull into a tie with the Red Dragons, heading into that contest.  The oddsmakers have made Brockport a 13 point favorite in this game and after the way that the Eagles handled Cortland at home several weeks ago it's hard to bet against that spread. I think that Brockport keeps their winning streak alive and will do so by a 83-72 margin.

Fredonia State  at  Buffalo State     8:00 PM

The Bengals are looking to win back to back conference games since the opening week of SUNYAC play. They have moved into the 6th and final playoff spot but with 3 straight home games are hoping that more upward mobility will follow. The Blue Devils finally got on the board in conference play but I don't think they will see another victory anytime soon. The poitspread in this game is a double digit margin of 15 points and I can't see it much closer than that. Bengals win big time, 85-69.

John Ivy completes the trifecta with his third award as he is named the ECAC Upstate PLayer of the Week. He's off to another good  start tonight as well.

Rashawn Powell with 9 points and 5 rebounds to lead the Lakers

magicman

Buffalo State 86 Fredonia 79

Bengals couldn't put the pesky Blue Devils away as this game was only a 3 point affair, with Buff State up 80-77 and only 25 seconds to go. Fredonia had to foul and Rod Epps hit them both to create some breathing room. Chris Boyd then got a steal on the Blue Devils possession and fed Brad Doyley for a layup that salted this one away. Epps with another pair from the line and a meaningless Fredonia layup at the buzzer for the final points.

Justin Mitchell with 26 points (10x14 fg, 6x7 ft), along with 9 rebounds,2 assists, 2 steals, and a block. Justin was the top scorer and rebounder in the game. Rod Epps backed him up with 23 points (7x20 fg, 3x7 3's, 6x6 ft) and 5 rebounds. Chris Boyd had 10 points (4x8 fg, 2x6 3's) with 5 boards and a pair of steals. Brad Doyley only scored 4 points but had 8 assists and 7 rebounds.

John Kovach with 23 points ( 10x17 fg, 0x2 3's, 3x5 ft) was high man for the Blue Devils. He tied Mitchell for rebounding honors as he also grabbed 9 boards. Robert Lyles had 21 points (6x12 fg, 2x6 3's, 7x9 ft), 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 rebounds. Tyrone Clark had 18 points (7x14 fg, 3x8 3's, 1x2 ft), 11 assists, 7 rebounds and 4 steals.

The Bengals pull into a 4 way tie for 4th place in the YAC with a 5-5 conference record (9-8 overall). Oneonta (idle tonight), Cortland (a loss tonight) and Oswego (also a loss tonight) all sport a 5-5 record as well.

Some big changes will take place this weekend when 2 of those 4 teams, Cortland and Oswego, invade the Sports Arena in the Queen City. The Bengals will need to play better than they did tonight, especially on the defensive end, if they expect back to back wins over the Lakers and Red Dragons.

While doing some fact checking about another topic, I happened to come across this post of mine from a year ago, and thought it was appropriate to repost it.

John Ivy, as we know by now, was selected to the D3hoops Team of the Week on Tuesday January 28th for the 3 games that he had for the week ending Jan. 26th. The following post was from January 29th 2013.

It seems like Mr. Ivy was doing a Deja Vu for us exactly 1 year from the date that he won the SUNYAC Player of the Week and made the D3hoops Team of the Week. Now that's....Magical

BENGALSRULE PLEASE NOTE: TEAM OF THE WEEK NOTIFICATION  Note color: Brockport State Green

And just like last week our reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week has also been named to this week's D3hoops Team of the Week

John Ivy who received the YAC honors yesterday got the D3hoops honors today. John is the 3rd SUNYAC player in 2 weeks to get this national award, and the 4th player from the YAC to be honored this year. Here's the write up from the TOTW page.

John Ivy
Ivy averaged 24.7 points and 3.0 steals per game in a 3-0 week for the Golden Eagles. He shot 51 percent from the floor, 9-for-20 from 3-point range and 7-for-8 from the line, while averaging 4.0 rebounds.

Here's the link to the complete TOTW:      http://d3hoops.com/awards/tow/2012-13/week10

So far this year, Gordon Lyons, Jake Simmons, Jeremy Smith and John Ivy were named the the TOTW.

John's shooting percentages and stats were pretty darn close as well. He did score more points this year in his 3 games.

Here's this year's stats.

Points scored:  35 vs Buffalo State....30 vs Oneonta....27 vs New Paltz

92 points for the week  30.7 ppg average     32x61 from the field for 52.4%    9x20 from 3 point range  45% (identical to last year 8-))

19x20 free throws   95%      13 rebounds  4.3 rpg average

He also had 5 steals, 2 blocks and 2 assists.

Congrats to John Ivy on his "trifecta." Keep the solid play going and keep those Eagles rolling. Looks like a showdown at Bport on Saturday night with the Geneseo boys!!! It should be a good one with their contrasting styles of play. Watch out for all those backdoor cuts!!  Wish I could be there, but will have to suffer down here in warm Florida on the golf course. Good luck Eagles!!!

Ditto on the trifecta congrats to John !!  He's a special player and equally humble kid. I had an up lose and personal look at him last week, Tuesday, dismantle my BENGALS!

It's good to see the SUNYAC represented nationwide also ( thanks for the heads up Pat Coleman)!

2nd half of SUNYAC play is underway and if you never believed in the term that " every game counts" you will believe in it now! 4 way tie for 4th?????  Omg. Top 4 get at least 1 home court playoff game, let alone make the playoffs! Something has got to give.

I'm hoping that the emergence of Chris Boyd and Legree Kirkland will help propel my beloved BENGALS to better efforts. As of today thier efforts have been sub par! Too talented a team ( IMHO) to struggle the way that they have been struggling! This weekend will let the BENGAL faithful know what kind of team, and what kind of players, we really have. I'm thinking that they stand tall. I'm praying that they do.

Go BENGALS!!

I wish that was true and that the top 4 teams did get at least 1 playoff game. Unfortunately that isn't the case as the team that comes in 2nd place will only play on the 1st place team's home court. I know that is true because my Cardinals came in 2nd to Cortland last year and the only court they got to play on was Corey Gymnasium and that belonged to the Red Dragons.
Here's the breakdown:

First Round:
#3  plays #6  at #3's home court
#4 plays #5  at #4's home court

Semi-Finals
The 2 winners advance to the semi-finals with the highest remaining seed (lets say #4) plays the #1 team, who had a bye, (regular season champ) on #1's home court.
Lowest remaining seed (lets say #3) will play the #2 team who also had a bye for coming in 2nd place on the home court of #1.

Finals
The 2 winners will play the next day on the home court of #1 even if #1 loses in the semifinal game.

7,

The SUNYAC made that switch last year and for the first time in quite a while the Top 8 teams were not in the playoffs. Went to just 6 teams with the top pair getting the 1st round byes. Once the other 4 was whittled down to 2 teams then the four teams meet at the #1 seed's campus for the Semi-finals and the Championship game. Cortland got to have that distinction last year, and with home court in hand bested my Cardinals to win the automatic bid. I think they probably would have won it if it was played in Plattsburgh, although we did beat them in our house last year during the regular season.

Last night's action:

#20 Brockport State 89  Cortland State 71

This game went pretty much according to the script. Red dragon played tough for the first half or so of the opening period but then the Golden Eagles behind their excellent backcourt slowly built up a double digit lead. Cortland actually had the lead at 18-17 with 9:28 left in the period but the Eagles' Matt Lee buried a triple, John Ivy knocked down a pair of free throws and Bobby Bell drained another long range shot. After a Cortland turnover Patrick Coyle missed a layup. got the rebound and the putback with and 1 added to the play. just like that it was 28-18 and the Red Dragons were forced to call a time out. Cortland behind a pair of baskets by Lamard Herron managed to cut the deficit in half, but back came brockport with 8 more unanswered points to make it 38-25 with 2:33 to play. The half ended with Brandon Caruthers hitting a 3 pointer, Clifton Lyerly got a steal and a breakaway dunk and Caruthers scored with just a couple of ticks left on the clock to give Brockport a 45-29 halftime advantage. Cortland could never mount the charge they needed in the 2nd half. The Eagles quickly went up by 20 points and the closest that the Red Dragons  got after that was 14 points. The Eagles largest lead was 21 on several occasions and they coasted to the finish line.

John Ivy once again was the big gun for Brockport as he had a game high 26 points (9x15 fg, 0x3 3's, 8x8 ft). Ivy only had 26 minutes in the game and the rest of the starters had diminished playing time as well with the confortable lead they enjoyed.

Brandon Caruthers scored 16 points (6x10 fg's, 2x4 3's, 2x3 ft) and 4 assists. Aaron white came off the bench to score 11 points (3x4 fg, 1x1 3's, 4x4 ft) and Bobby Bell had 9 points on 3 shots, all made from long range. Pat Coyle had 7 points and led the team with 5 rebounds.

Brockport outshot the Red Dragons from every angle. They were 29x52 from the field (55.8%), 9x16 from behind the arc (56.2%) and 22x24 from the line (91.7%) I don't think you'll lose too many games with stats like those. 8-)  The Red Dragons shot 25x55 from the field (45.5%), 6x18 from long range (33.3%) and 15x27 from the stripe (55.6%) They had 20 turnovers to only 12 for Brockport, but did win the rebounding battle by a 35-25 margin.

Cortland was led by Kevin McMahon with 16 points (5x9 fg, 0x2 3's, 6x13 ft) 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks. Lamard Herron added 13 points (6x13 fg, 0x4 3's, 1x1 ft) and 3 rebounds.  Micheal Russo had 9 points in 10 minutes, with a pair of 3 pointers and a 3x3  effort from the line.

Cortland will return to action this weekend as they travel west to meet Fredonia on Friday night and Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon. They fall to 10-7 overall and 5-5 in conference play. The logjam that is currently 4th place could be a bit clearer after the smoke settles from Friday and Saturday's action.

#20 Brockport, just like the river, keeps rolling along. The Eagles are thoroughly enjoying the comforts of home right now, and that could prove to be a problem for the #37 Geneseo State Knights when they roll into town on Saturday for the big 1st place showdown.  Brockport stretches their unbeaten streak to 14 straight games and they are currently tied with #8 St. Norbert with the 3rd longest winning streak in Division III. Stevens points is the leader with 18 in a row and Cabrini is 2nd with a 16 game streak.

The Eagles are 15-1 and 9-0 in the YAC at their halfway point. Saturday will mark the 1st time that Brockport and Geneseo have met this year since their earlier meeting was postponed.

I had this game as an 83-72 win by Brockport. I was almost perfect on Cortland's score missing by a point. Not even my red hot crystal ball could predict that the Eagles were going to shoot their socks off in this game. I mean, c'mon, 56.2% from long distance is better than Cortland shot from the foul line. If the Eagles were 16x24 from the line instead of an ungodly 22x24 I'd of hit their number right on the button. ::)
