Buffalo State with a furious rally at Oneonta but falls just short and drops this one to the Red Dragons 83-82.

If  Bengalsrule was in town we could go drown our sorrows together. :(

Well look on the bright side Magic, at least they got 1.  Most teams that do that trip get 0.  Always good to get both, but at least it wasn't a totally lost weekend for the Cardinals.

Told Coach Curle when they left on Thursday, that if they went 1-1 it would be a good trip. Didn't want that, because I don't think we can host the playoffs with a 1-1 weekend. It is what it is. Just 2 less games I'll get to see live I suppose. Unless we get lots of help from other teams in the league over the next two weeks. I'm not counting on that to happen though.

Now comes the conundrum, hope for the 2 seed, get the bye and know you're in the semifinals or get the 3 seed, host a home playoff game, but risk a loss and you don't see the semifinals. I'm thinking the 3 seed is what I'll wish for. I like that extra game as a fan, plus it'll keep the team sharp and if you win that 1st round game, plus the semifinal game, but lose in the championship, you'll be 2-1 instead of 1-1 and that will help you in the Pool C battle.

What did I tell you a couple weeks ago??  I'd rather have the 3 seed, and it's probably more beneficial to have the 3 seed than the 2, because as you said you get a game at home, and stay fresh playing a game.

As I've Said, Double Round Robin destroys SUNYAC national rankings and Overall W-L  we eat our young.

Wouldn't be surprised to see 'port drop out of top 25, and Knights [Have a son '00 Geneseo Grad] not get rewarded for their double win weekend.

Never seen anyone drop from 15 to out of the poll based on one loss to a good team.

Nearly half of the Top 25 teams have three or more losses. Pep doesn't watch too many other teams' games but seeing the score of the Mary Washington game with Salisbury late in the second half yesterday, tuned in to see a .500 Seagull squad beat the #12 Eagles by 10 on the Eagles' court. Game was of particular interest because Pep's son, who is a junior varsity basketball coach at a D.C. private school, met Salisbury Coach Josh Merkel at a coaching clinic and, as it turns out, Merkel is a friend of AU Coach Dale Wellman. (Small world!)

Pep was pleased to see a pep band at Mary Washington. The webcast zoomed in on the band during a timeout wherein Pep learned that they either have some "older" students at MW or they've got music faculty and/or local long-time fans who play instruments who comprise much of the band! Pep's gotta make some phone calls....  ;)

Magic--Congrats on big win at the Port. I did watch the game on stream and the Burg has that no quit attitude. That playoff game where ever it is played will be a great game. The college game with the emphasis on post play has transformed the game to total penetration and get a call. That was evident in this game. The Port could not stop the Burg from penetrating and vice-versa. I know it took alot out of your boys and helped Geneseo. I watched Pburg-Geneseo game on Saturday as Bport crunched the Bears. Your boys didn't seem to have the same intensity level and couldn't knock down shots. Hopefully that third game will happen!!!Go Eagles

With Regional Rankings on its way this week heres how I think the East Regional Rankings will look like
1. Brockport
2. Plattsburgh
3. Geneseo
4. NYU
5. Hobart
6. Stevens
I think Nazareth is 7th and Vassar 8th. Main reason I think Stevens is ahead of Naz is because they beat them twice.

I was glad we got to play Brockport first on the weekend because that was the game we definitely had to win if we entertained any hope of hosting the YAC Tournament. Problem was...it was a double edged sword. I knew Geneseo wouldn't expend anywhere near the energy levels taking on the Bears as the Cardinals would in the game against the Eagles. That's why a 2-0 weekend was going to be extremely difficult to pull off. It's tough enough to win those two games when the teams are of average quality, but to hope for back to backers, when the Knights and Eagles are both Top 25 worthy, is a whole other animal.

And you're right...the Cardinals didn't have the same intensity, They were outrebounded, outhustled, and outshot. Yet they were still only 2 points down with under 3 minutes to go. The 2 three pointers that the Knights got in the next minute turned the game around though, and the Cardinals couldn't recover from that.

Where do u wanna meet? Still sick over our loss to Oneonta. Give the Red Dragons credit though. They wanted it just a little more than we did!  Now we have the Brockport/Geneseo weekend coming up.  If ever there was a weekend where we could use 2 wins, then this is the weekend

Magic...any pointers on how to beat the Golden Eagles?  If so let me know so I can pass it on!!

Go BENGALS!

#5546
Saturday's game

Geneseo 60 Plattsburgh 51

Trying to complete a 2-0 trip, against 2 of the top teams in the conference, on the road, was a lot to ask of my Cardinals. And it didn't happen but it wasn't for a lack of effort. Plattsburgh is the only one of the top 3 teams that is asked to go on the road and play the other top teams in back to back games. That definitely puts us at a disadvantage. Brockport doesn't have to play consecutive road games against Plattsburgh and Geneseo. The Knights aren't scheduled to play Brockport and Plattsburgh in back to back games on the road. The schedule makers can't consider these inequities when they draw up the conference slate. This year because of the teams that are at the top of the standings, the Cardinals got the short end of the stick. That's just the way things are, this year.

The game was a tightly contested affair as you would expect from 2 teams that have been as successful as the Cards and the Knights have been. The first half was a back and forth battle that had the Knights enter the locker room with a slim 25-24 lead.

Plattsburgh opened the 2nd half with an 11-4 spurt that had then in front 35-29 with 16:39 left in the game. Geneseo would come back with a 16-0 run of their own that carried them from the 6 point deficit to a 10 point, 45-35 lead. It would be the largest lead of the game and it came with 10:48 left to play. The Cardinals would respond and fought back with another 10-2 burst that brought them within 2 points at 47-45 but they would never get all the way back. Twice more they got within 2 points, the last time after a Shavar Fields dunk with 2:51 left in the game made it 51-49, but the Knights Thomas Decker answered Fields' dunk with a 3 pointer and after a Cardinal turnover Andy Drescher buried another 3 pointer 30 seconds later. Suddenly it was 57-49 and time was a huge factor as less than 2 minutes remained. The Cardinals resorted to 3 point attempts of their own but came up empty on three straight shots. Alan Siergiej  got an offensive rebound and a putback to break the Cards scoring drought but by that time only 30 seconds were left and the score was 58-51. The Cards had to foul and then hoist a couple more 3 point attempts. Geneseo went 2x4 from the line and the Cards went 0x2 from the field to make the final 60-51.

Gordon Lyons once again led Geneseo with a double double of 17 points and 13 rebounds. He added 4 steals a block and 1 assist. Connor Fedge added 12 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Andy Drescher had 12 points off the bench as he scored all of them from long range making 4 of 6 attempts. Matt Curry and Thomas Decker both had 7 points. Curry also had 9 rebounds while Decker added 5 assists. The Knights were 22x49 from the field (44.9%), 8x23 (34.8%) from downtown and 8x13 (61.5%) from the line. They won the battle of the boards 36-28 and had 18 turnovers to 16 for the Cardinals.

The last time Plattsburgh scored so few points was almost 3 years ago on February 15th, 2011 when we defeated Potsdam State 51-48. The last time we scored 51 points or less and lost was over 5 years ago on January 4th, 2009 when Shenandoah beat Plattsburgh 63-39 in a holiday tournament.

Plattsburgh was led by back up point guard Mike Mitchell who scored 11 points. Starting point guard Chris Manning had 8 points, 6 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. John Perez had 7 points, a team high 8 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists and a block.

Plattsburgh shot like they were a tired team hitting only 16x50 from the field (32%), an even worse 7x31 from beyond the arc (22.6%) and a surprising 12x14 from the line (85.7%) Where were all the foul calls tonight? ??? We could have used about another 25 or so more free throws. ;D Seriously though it's amazing the difference in fouls called between the 2 games of Friday and Saturday. 62 fouls and 87 free throws on Friday night....25 fouls and 27 free throws in Saturday's game. Granted the 2 teams (Brockport and Geneseo) have a different style of  basketball and Brockport's game will certainly dictate more fouls will take place but that's a huge discrepancy from one game to another.

Geneseo moves into 2nd place in the conference with a 10-2 record (16-3 overall) and will return to action on Tuesday night when they host Brockport in a battle for 1st place.

Plattsburgh drops to 10-3 in the conference and 16-4 overall. They are off until the weekend when they host Cortland and then Oswego at Memorial Hall.

The game on Tuesday between Brockport and Geneseo could leave both teams with an 11-2 record if Geneseo wins. They will have split the season series so the next tiebreaker is how they fared against the next best team in the conference. That would be Plattsburgh and they both will have a 1-1 record against the Cardinals. If they both win the remainder of their games and end up with 16-2 records, what would be the next tiebreaker? Head to head point differential? Flip a coin?

I went to the SUNYAC website to try and find out but every thing I clicked on, that might contain the information I was looking for, said I was trying to access "protected content" and required a password. I tried to bring up the championship manuals and the handbook, apparently the SUNYAC is afraid to let the magicman see what's in these files. What's up with that. ??? Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. I remember a few years ago I could get that info from the YAC website and it would spell out all the steps of the conference tiebreakers. Don't know when it became "top secret" stuff. :o

Where's Fran Elia when I need him?? Can you hear me Fran? You must know what the tiebreakers are. You probably also know why these links are "protected content". I'm betting you also have a password to access them. ;D

Geneseo-Bport game will be a another classic. The Eagles will try to uptempo them as much as possible, but Geneseo is very good at getting back in transition and keeping composure. The Eagles must have Ivy continue his aggressive style, but need to get more consistent scoring out of Carruthers, Lee, and the freshman, Liverly. If they play that solid D and keep the penetration out of the middle of the court; it should be a nice win for the Bport crew. A win here will put them in sweet position to host!!! Go EAGLES!!!

"Protected " indeed!  Around 2am last night I discovered the same thing.  I know that the manual was not a " protected " item in the past.  You could always find out what the playoffs rules were for every sport. Now I need a password?  That must be a mistake that hopefully will be fixed soon.

If memory serves me correctly the tie breaker continues down the standings until 1  team shows a better record against a higher seed than the other. In the Geneseo Brockport case after you look at thier results against Plattsburgh then you would look to see how they did against the 4th ranked team if the same ( ie both teams split the season series) then you go to the 5th ranked team and so on!

With the next 4 teams all seperated by 1 game. (8-6,8-7 and7-7 records) everyone should have access to that information ASAP ! Inquiring minds want to know!
