Tuesday night score.

Cortland State exacts a measure of revenge over Utica College as they down the Pioneers by an 83-64 final score. Nice season opening win for the Red Dragons. Lamard Herron tops 3 Cortland players in double figures with 16 pts. Blair Estarfaa has 15 and James Morales has 12. Guard Shane Martinez led the team with 6 rebounds and scored 6 points. Red Dragons never trailed as they opened the game with a 16-2 outburst and were comfortably leading by double digits throughout the contest. They led at the break by 13...36-23 and stretched it to a 24 point margin at 60-36 with 7:37 left in the game.

Conor Maisch with 16 and Aaron Nevins with 10 led the Pioneers.

Cortland will return to the hardwood this weekend when they take part in the Cortaca Classic. They will meet Farmingdale State on Friday evening at 6:00 PM and then play Trinity College (Conn) from the NESCAC conference on Saturday at 4:00 PM. This will be the 3rd matchup already this season between teams from the YAC and the CAC.  We are currently 1-1 with Hamilton beating New Paltz in OT last Saturday and Oneonta taking down Williams tonight.

As expected Vassar College defeats New Paltz by a 70-61 final score. Taylor Sowah led the Hawks as usual with a double double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. He added 3 steals, 3 blocks, and a pair of assists to round out a strong performance. Alex Perlman came off the bench to add 16 points and 6 boards. Malik Seelal also came off the bench to score 14 points and haul down 8 rebounds.

The Hawks stayed with the Brewers throughout the 1st half as there were 6 lead changes along with 5 ties in a back and forth period. New Paltz went up 22-20 with 2:41 left in the half on a pair of Alex Perlman free throws, but failed to score again and the Brewers reeled off 6 unanswered points to head into the locker room up 26-22.

It took Taylor Sowah 28 seconds to score back to back layups to open the 2nd period and tie the game up. It was the last time the Hawks would be that close. The Brewers used a 12-1 run to open up a double digit lead and gradually increased it to a game high 16 point advantage at 60-44 with 6:38 left in the game. A 15-6 spurt by the Hawks got it down to a 7 point lead at 66-59 with time running out and the Brewers closed out the game hitting 6 of 8 from the line.

Vassar got 17 points from Curtis Smith and 16 points from Erickson Wasyl.

The Hawks are in action again on Friday at 1:00 PM as they travel to Rochester to take part in Rochester's Chuck Resler Tournament. They will face Utica College in the opening game.  They will play Rochester or Gordon the next day at 1 PM or 6 PM.

Wanted to list the Massey Rating System rankings for all the East Region teams at the start of the year so I'd have a reference point as the season progresses. The following rankings were copied down by me shortly before the opening day on Nov. 15th.

The first weekend of games has already seen considerable movement among the teams. A couple of examples:

Massey had Plattsburgh with a preseason ranking of #15 but they have moved up to #13 after going 2-0 in their first couple of games. Potsdam State was ranked at #332 but with an opening day win over Morrisville they moved up 79 places to now rank at #253. Likewise, Morrisville has tumbled from #68 all the way down to #229, after back to back losses to Potsdam State and Clarkson.

The number in front of the team is the preseason ranking assigned by Massey. The initial ranking is based on where the teams finished up last season. There will be wholesale changes during the first few weeks of the season until the teams have played enough games to get a handle on this year's true ranking.  He ranks a total of 417 Division III teams. So he has Plattsburgh and Brockport ranked in his Top 25

15     Plattsburgh State
20     Brockport State

That's all 45 teams in the East Region. I'll do updates every so often so we can see the teams on the rise and the teams that have failed to live up to expectations.

We start out with 4 SUNYAC teams in the top ten in the East. I think we may end  up with YAC teams  in the top 10 but may be slightly different than the 4 listed here.

Big bad NESCAC gets a little taste of the East Region and SUNYAC! Great win for Oneonta and Coach Medici. Looks like the SUNYAC is going to be a really good conference again this year.

Good win by Oneonta over Williams.  Williams is having problems with a new coaching and a short bench..now 0-2.  The Nescac only started practice on Nov. 1...no excuse really.  Williams lost its first game last year and almost won the Title...losing by one in the last sec in the Title Game.  Expect the CAC teams to be better prepared by season end to meet the Sunyac schools in the post season.
Guess I "threw the glove" down...oh well.  Still, congrats to the smaller Oneonta team that took it to the EPHS!   This is coming from an Amherst poster :)

C'mon amh63, you might just as well come right out and admit it...you love the fact that Williams is 0-2 and losing to the "lesser" conferences. ;D     And that's SUNYAC not Sunyac....after all I noticed it was CAC teams. ;)

Yep!.....my friend.  Did not mean to put down the SUNYAC with the l.c.....just lazy....see Nescac earlier.  Your fellow poster is correct to a fault.  Tufts, a favorite has lost two games...and Amherst struggled last night against Anna Maria in an away game opener.
Stay warm!

I hope all my friends in the western part of the state are safe and warm in the wake of 6 feet of snow and more on the way....especially concerned for my favorite Bengal. Stay home with the family Champ, and get some cuddle time in.

Just watching Brian Williams and heard that 6 or 7 deaths already attributed to the storm. Niagara University Women's Basketball team were rescued from being stranded on the highway for hours. Scary weather right out of the movies.

Oneonta defeats Williams 74-68 in Williamstown Here's a recap of the game.

The Red Dragons pulled off the upset here but as I mentioned when I made my picks that making Oneonta a 15 point underdog in this game was out of line and it wouldn't surprise me if they won the game outright. I thought the Red Dragons would fare better if they had played a game prior to facing the Ephs and so I went with Williams to win a close game. I wanted to be wrong and the Red Dragons made it happen.

Oneonta was down almost the entire 1st half. They never gained the lead and after an early 4-4 tie they fell behind by as many as 6 points. They fought back to tie it up once again at 17 with 11 minutes left in the half but Williams went on a 14-3 run to open up an 11 point lead at 31-20. The Red Dragons got it back to single digits when Zach Mager hit a 3 pointer to make the score 33-25 at the break.

The 2nd half opened with the teams trading punches but Williams once again built their lead to 11 points at 41-30 with 3 minutes gone by in the period. Zach Mager then went on a 7-1 run to pull the Red Dragons back within 5 points. Eulogio Medina and Mikey McElroy hit back to back buckets and all of a sudden it was a 1 point game at 42-41. The Ephs quickly went back up by 6 on a pair of free throws by Daniel Wohl and a 3 pointer by Chris Galvin. Back came the Red Dagons as Medina scored a pair of baskets in 30 seconds and Mager hit another triple to give Oneonta their first lead of the night at 48-47 with 10:47 left to play. The Ephs counterpunched with 5 unanswered points to regain the lead at 52-47. It would be the last lead they would enjoy. 11 consecutive Red Dragon points on a free throw and 5 layups...3 by Frankie Kelly and 2 by Medina put Oneonta up 59-52 with 5:40 left to play. The Ephs didn't know it yet but this game was over.  They did get as close as 66-64 with 1:11 left to play but a layup by McElroy followed by 6 straight made free throws between the M&M boys... Mager and McElroy closed out the Ephs 74-68.

Zach Mager opened the season with another double double of 22 points and 11 rebounds. Eulogio Medina added 20 points and 6 rebounds in his first game in a Red Dragon uniform. Frankie kelly had 10 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. McElroy chipped in with 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist.

Daniel Wohl had 23 points for Williams and Mike Greenman was next with 14.

Oneonta returns to action this Friday when they meet up with SUNY-Cobleskill at 6:00 PM at Hartwick. They will meet another NCAA team from last year when they host Eastern Connecticut on Saturday the 22nd.

Thanks a bunch Magic! Its been 1 doozy of a week here in western New york!  Wife went back to work tonight, for the first time since her father passed away, so the "Cuddletime" wont be in effect tonight :( . I must admit that with the morning forecast calling for another 1-2 feet by Thursday night, the blogs take on a whole new significance.

I would ask all those out there to say a prayer for those trapped in WNY. Today 1 guy was found in his car, under 12 feet of snow, frozen to death. Not too mention 4 folks who died from shoveling snow! Yeesh, its been tough!!

Oh and BTW...THanks for standing up for the SUNYAC!!!!!!! ;)

Of course I know you weren't putting down the SUNYAC amh63...You have too much class to do that. 8-) I just couldn't resist jesting with you a bit. ;)

It certainly hasn't been the typical opening of hoops season for the NESCAC teams. Surprised about the Tufts losses. Not surprised at the Williams losses though. Really surprised about the closeness of the Middlebury-UNE game where the Panthers needed a bucket at the buzzer to come away with the win. I expected New England to be better than last year's 2-23 but hanging with the Panthers to the bitter end is a shocker. Especially after Southern Maine blew UNE's socks off tonight and  NESCAC celler dweller Conn. College beat Southern Maine by 15 points last weekend.
So if Conn College beat So. Maine by 15 and Southern Maine beat Univ. of New England by 18 and Univ of New England only lost to Middlebury by 2 points, then how many points will Connecticut College beat Middlebury by when they meet in conference play?

Likewise if So. Maine can hang with Anna Maria, only losing by an 86-83 score and Conn College can beat So. Maine by 15 and Anna Maria can lead Amherst by 14 points halfway through the 2nd half, will Conn College be able to steal one from the Lord Jeffs this year? Lots of funny stuff going on with the CAC's Big Three this season and it's only 5 days old. ;D

This may be the year my Cardinals could get a little payback if we meet for a 3rd straight year in the NCAA tournament (as he knocks on wood, to not jinx his Cardinals). I for one would like to see that happen.

Only if they let me ride on the team bus, 7. Coach Curle has said he'd let me but can't get the suits in administration to go along with that. I'll be at my computer though, and was hoping to watch a live webcast of the game. However, after checking Western's website it looks like all I'll get is live stats. What's up with that? The Colonials too cheap to invest in some video equipment or hire an independent contractor to broadcast the games over the internet? Plattsburgh, along with a number of other schools in New York and New England, uses Northeast Sports Network to do their games. They do a great job, with a very good announcer, quality video, even instant replay. It looks like Western games are only on video occasionally if they are on the road and the home team is broadcasting the game. I was disappointed to say the least.

I see in your post on the LEC board that you had quite a bit to say about Western Connecticut after they released the roster and not all of it was positive. Yet in your LEC pick 'ems you chose them to beat Plattsburgh. Is that because you're wearing your heart on your sleeve and you're hoping for a win, or do you really think the Colonials, with the personnel problems you describe, are better than the Cardinals? I'd switch my pick if I was you. ;D Just kidding 7, I know you gotta go with your guys. It should be a good game, I just wish it was being shown on the web.

FYI NEVER check the school sites when it comes to video go to http://portal.stretchinternet.com/lec/ to see what games are being broadcast from LEC schools.  According to that, the Plattsburgh/Western game WILL have TV.  Whether they do or not remains to be seen, but it looks like they will.  Enjoy the game Magic I have something in the City tomorrow night so I'll be getting a final only  :'(

7express,

Thanks for the link to the Western/Plattsburgh game. I'm already in a better frame of mind for Friday night. Usually if you go to the school's website and click on their schedule you will find a link to the webcast if there is one. Western's schedule was showing video links only to away games which led me to believe they had no video capabilities. Glad to find out I was wrong. I take back what I said about them being too cheap. ;D I see you've accepted my little proposition. Good man. I'll do a recap of the game and post a copy on the LEC board for you.
