Congrats to magicman and his Cards today. A tough game from start to finish with  my beloved BENGALS missing critical free throws down the stretch ( 6 for 6 in the first half and 12 of 21 in the 2nd). I really thought we had this 1! Waiting the that "magic' phone call. Hoping the video quality was at least good. ;)

On to a neutral court make up game in Albany with Pine Manor (Tuesday).

Magicman....surprised that you did not give a halftime score for your team.  Congrats to your Cardinals.  Sorry that Amherst lost in your pick-them contest on another board.  See that WASH U LOST TOO.  plus K for your support. :)

amh63,

You didn't go back far enough when you read the posts. You don't think I would group my Cards in with the rest of the gang do you? My halftime score of the Cardinal-Buff St game was a post all by itself and was right before the one you read, but on the previous page.

Sure was surprised to see the ending of the Amherst game. I was flipping back and forth between games and the D3hoops scoreboard. Saw that the Lord Jeffs were up by a 67-61 score with 2:49 left to play and figured they would probably win the game. Tough loss for your team. Plus K back at you.

Plattsburgh State 94 Buffalo State 89

Pretty good game between these two teams as they took turns making runs throughout the game. I said it would be a track meet and my predicted score of the Cards winning 85-80 wasn't too far off. It actually looked real good when the score was 80-75 with 2:50 left in the game but an abundance of fouls and 14 made free throws at the end bumped up the final score. My spread of 5 points was on the money though.

The Cardinals 7-0 run to end the first half gave them their largest lead of the period. It was a big turnaround after the opening salvo that the Bengals levied on Plattsburgh as they came out of the gate with a 13-2 run the left the visitors reeling and forcing Plattsburgh to take a time out. Whatever Coach Curle said must have sunk in as the Cardinals ripped off a 17-3 run of their own to take a 19-16 lead with 9:03 left in the half. The Cards went up by 6 points but the Bengals hung tough and finally caught them at 34 with 1:35 remaining. The Cards scored the final 7 points of the period helped by 3 free throws from Eddie Correa with just 1 second on the game clock when he was fouled attempting a 3 pointer.

Plattsburgh came out of the locker room and showed no signs of slowing down as they opened up their largest lead of the game at 51-38. Buff St. wasn't about to pack it in though and fired off a 17-4 burst that caught Plattsburgh at 55 all with 13 minutes left in the game. Chris Cartwright (8 points), Jordan Glover (5 points), and Larry Rivers (4 points) were the culprits responsible for those points and after Xavier Thomas put the Cards back in front with a driving layup, Glover buried another 3 pointer to give the Bengals their first lead since the 10 minute mark of the first period. Seconds later Glover hit another 3 ball to up their lead to 61-57. Plattsburgh's Shamoy McIntosh scored on a layup and then Kyle Richardson hit a 3 pointer on Plattsburgh's next possession to give the lead back to the visiting team. Richardson then stole the ball, scored on a dunk and the Cardinals were off and running once again. Eddie Correa drained another 3 pointer, Xavier Thomas had another jam and the Cards stretched the advantage to 70-61 with 6 minutes left. The Bengals cut the lead to 4, and Thomas responded with another dunk. Shortly after that Correa had back to back 3 pointers to restore the Cardinals' 9 point edge at 78-69 with 3:52 remaining. The Bengals wouldn't go away and managed to make it a 1 possession game with 55 seconds left. The Cardinals hit 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch though, to hold off the home team.

Plattsburgh had 5 guys in double figures led by Eddie Correa with a season high 23 points. Eddie was 7x11 from the field and hit 6 of 9 shots from long range. He was 3x3 from the line as well. His long range bombs came at opportune times and none were bigger than the 2 he hit inside the final five minutes to keep the Bengals at bay.  Shamoy McIntosh scored 16 points (4x11 fg, 0x1 3's, 8x11ft), had 5 rebounds, 3 assists, a block and a steal. 11 of his points and 11 from Correa  came in the 2nd half.
Reggie Williams had another double-double of 14 points (5x9 fg, 4x6 ft) and 10 rebounds. Jordan Moody came off the bench and scored 12 points (5x6 fg, 2x3 3's) and had 3 steals in 13 minutes of court time. Xavier Thomas also came off the bench with a big game for the Cards. The X man had 10 points (5x8 fg, 0x1 3's, 0x2 ft), 6 rebounds, a block and a steal in 15 minutes on the floor. Kyle Richardson didn't hit double figures but his 5 points scored, in a 24 second span,  lifted Plattsburgh from a 2 point deficit to a 3 point lead they never relinquished, was a pivotal moment in the game. The Bengals had all the momentum at that point having overcome a large Plattsburgh lead to go in front for the first time in the 2nd half. Kyle's 3 pointer, steal and dunk quieted the home crowd and restored some order for the Cardinals. Richardson ended up with 9 points (3x6 fg, 1x2 3's, 2x2 ft), 7 rebounds, 4 assists, a block and a steal in 20 minutes of playing time.

The Cardinals outshot the Bengals from the field and from the line. The Bengals were slightly better from long distance. Buff State had 41 rebounds to 37 for Plattsburgh and both teams had 16 turnovers. Both teams also had 17 assists.
Here are the shooting stats:

Plattsburgh: FG 33-61  54.1%   3 Pointers 9-19    47.4%    FT 19-27  70.4%
Buffalo St.   FG  29-66  43.9%   3 Pointers 13-26  50%          FT 18-27  66.7%

Buffalo State placed 4 players in double figures. Jordan Glover captured the game's scoring honors with 25 points (7x15 fg, 7x11 3's, 4x4 ft). He also had 6 assists, 4 rebounds and a steal. Chris Cartwright was close behind with 24 points (8x20 fg, 5x13, 3's, 3x4 ft). The former All Conference performer added 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. Lovell Smith just missed a double-double with 15 points (6x10 fg, 3x4 ft) and 9 rebounds. Rod Epps had 14 points (4x8 fg, 1x2 3's, 5x7 ft). Larry Rivers also just missed a double-double with 9 points and 10 rebounds.

Plattsburgh is now 8-3 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. They sit in 3rd place a half game behind surprising  New Paltz who has a 4-1 record. The Cardinals do own the tie breaker over the Hawks as they won the earlier matchup between the two. Plattsburgh is off until this coming weekend when some big changes could occur in the YAC standings. First place Oswego (4-0 SUNYAC) comes to the Burgh on Friday night to put their undefeated conference record on the line. Cortland follows the Lakers as they invade Memorial Hall on Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons have went from 1st to 6th in the span of 3 days as the parity in the conference is evident perhaps more so this year than in recent memory.

Buffalo State drops to 4-6 overall (1-4 conf.) and find themselves in 9th place in the YAC. They are probably the best 9th place team I've ever seen. They get a breather this Tuesday as they take on first year program Pine Manor in a makeup of the canceled Coles Classic tournament that was wiped out by the Blizzard of the Century in November. They will play Pine Manor, since it's only 1 game instead of the original 2 game tourney, on a neutral court in Troy NY at Sage College. This is a travel concession to make it a little easier for Pine Manor. The Bengals then have the tough job of facing Brockport and then Geneseo on the road with the real possibility of falling to 1-6 in the conference. A road split next weekend is almost a necessary requirement to stay in the playoff race.

Pine Manor    vs  Buffalo State        1:00 PM   @ Sage College (Troy, NY)

This one should be a high scoring affair with the Bengals coming out on top. This is the first year that Pine Manor is fielding a men's basketball team.  The Gators have been competitive however, and if the Bengals take them lightly they could surprise. Earlier Western Connecticut found themselves down by 9 points late in the 2nd half before rallying to put the Gators away. They come into this contest with a 3-7 record but three of their losses have been by 4 points or less. They will play hard until the final buzzer as they have nothing to lose. The point spread favors the Bengals by a 12 point margin. Knowing how the Bengals like to keep the game interesting I don't think they will blow this team away. I see a final score of Buffalo State 95 Pine Manor 85.

Buffalo State 47 Pine Manor 35  at the half

Bengals led by Lovell Smith with 10 of their first 14 points opened up a 16-6 lead at the 14:21 mark of the 1st period. The Gators would respond with a 14-3 run to take the lead 20-19 with 10 minutes to go. The teams traded leads for the next 5 minutes until the Bengals, down 32-31 would end the half on a 16-3 run of their own to take the double digit margin into the break. Rod Epps fueled that run with 8 points to lead the way.

Lovell Smith with 14 points at halftime to lead all scorers. Rod Epps with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Larry Rivers almost has a double-double in the 1st period with 9 points and 9 boards.

Chancie Williams with 10 points to lead the Gators.

Cortland State  at  Geneseo State        5:30 PM

Geneseo stumbled badly the last time out and they want to get back on the winning path today against the Red Dragons. Cortland is also hoping to rebound as they are streaking in a different direction with 2 straight losses following their 8-0 start. The teams have 2 common opponents as they both beat Fredonia and they both lost to New Paltz. The oddsmakers have basically rated this one a tossup but do give a slight 1 point edge to Cortland. I think it will also be a close game but I'm taking the Knights to win this one by a 73-67 final score

Oswego State   at   Brockport State     5:30 PM

Probably most of the other teams in the SUNYAC will be rooting for the Golden Eagles to hand the Lakers their first conference loss in this evening's contest. I know I certainly will. The Lakers lost 2 of the 3 games against the Eagles last year including the matchup in the SUNYAC tournament. Oswego has won 9 of the past 12 meetings with Brockport however and tonight's contest should be another closely contested affair. The point spread has the Golden Eagles favored by a single point and if Clifton Lyerly plays in tonight's game I might take the Eagles. He's missed the past 2 games and I've seen nothing to indicate his availability for tonight. I'm thinking that the Lakers win this one by a 75-71 final score, but I sure hope I'm wrong about that.

Buffalo State takes care of business against Pine Manor as they defeat the Gators by a 111-90 score. Not much defense playe in this game by either side. Up by 12 at the break the Bengals quickly opened up a 20 point lead early in the 2nd period. The lead fluctuated between 20 and 24 points  for most of the half until the Gators down 89-65 used a 10-1 spurt to cut the lead to 15 points. That was as close as they got as the Bengals eclipsed the century mark for the win.

The Gators had no one to match up with Lovell Smith as he scored 34 points on 14x17 shooting from the field. He was also 6x6 from the free throw line. Rod Epps had 25 points (8x14 fg,1x2 3's, 8x9 ft), 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Larry Rivers got his double-double with 15 points (5x11 fg, 5x7 ft) and 10 rebounds.

The Bengals improve to 5-6 on the season and will travel to Brockport for a Friday night contest at 5:30 PM.

R.J. Rosa is selected as the SUNYAC Player of the Week. It is his 2nd selection of the season having won the award after the 3rd week of the season. He had a big week as the Hawks pulled off three big upsets in SUNYAC play on their way to a 3-0 week to move into 2nd place in the conference. Congatulations, RJ. !! 8-)

Here is the write up from the SUNYAC website:

R.J. Rosa, New Paltz

New Paltz senior guard/forward R.J. Rosa averaged 21.0 points per game in a 3-0 week for the Hawks, helping stretch the team's win streak to four. Rosa shot 48 percent (24-of-50) from the field on the week, including a 42.9 percent (9-of-21) clip from 3-point range, and he shot 85.7 percent (6-of-7) from the line. Rosa also averaged 4.3 steals per game, 3.3 rebounds per game, 1.7 assists per game and 0.3 blocks per game. On Tuesday, he scored a career-high 31 points and shot 7-of-9 from 3-point range, including a 6-of-6 mark in the second half, to help New Paltz hand SUNY Cortland its first loss of the season by a 78-73 final. Rosa then scored a game-high 19 points and added seven steals, four rebounds and two assists on Friday, helping the Hawks edge The College at Brockport, 57-55. Finally, on Saturday, he scored 13 points and chipped in three steals, two rebounds and two assists as well in New Paltz's 75-62 victory over SUNY Geneseo. Rosa currently leads the SUNYAC in steals per game (3.2) and ranks third in the conference in scoring (16.6 points per game).

Geneseo 77 Cortland 63

I called this game a Geneseo win 73-67. If I take the four extra points that the Knights scored and add them to Cortland's total it would be a perfect match.

A back and forth 1st half with several ties and 6 lead changes found the Knights up by two 34-32 at the break. The 2nd half started out the same way with the teams trading lead for the first 2 minutes of action but the Knights, down 38-36 with 17:45 to go, scored 15 consecutive points over the next 5 minutes. Cortland came up empty during that stretch, missing all 8 shots they took and with 12:49 left the score was 51-38. It was an explosion by Geneseo that the Red Dragons couldn't recover from and the closest they got the rest of the game was 9 points.

Gordon Lyons returned to normal tonight with his 10th double-double in 11 games. He had a game high 20 points (5x5fg, 10x14 ft) and was the leading rebounder with 11 rebounds. Andy Drescher had 17 points (6x14 fg, 3x10 3's, 2x2 ft), 3 rebounds and 3 assists. James McKenna came off the bench with a solid contribution scoring 10 points (3x7 fg, 0x1 3's, 4x4 ft), grabbing 7 rebounds, with 3 assists and 3 blocks. Connor Rogers also had 10 points (4x5 fg, 1x2 3's, 1x4 ft), 3 rebounds and 2 assists.

Lamard Herron led the Red Dragons with 17 points (6x15 fg, 1x6 3's, 4x4 ft) and a team high 4 rebounds. Blair Estafa added 11 points (3x9 fg, 2x7 3's, 3x5 ft).

Geneseo outshot the Red Dragons 54% to 35% from the field, and 35% to 21% from long range. Cortland had a better percentage from the line 80% to 72% but only made 12 free throws to 21 for Geneseo. The Knights had a big lead in the  rebounding department  with a 41 to 26 margin. Cortland however took care of the ball much better as they only had 3 turnovers while Geneseo committed 13.

Geneseo is now 7-4 on the season and 3-1 in the SUNYAC. They move into a 3rd place tie with Plattsburgh and just a half game behind 4-1 New Paltz. The Knight will return to action on Friday when they host Fredonia at 5:30 PM. Buffalo State will then come to town on Saturday afternoon.

Cortland falls to 8-3 overall and 2-3 in the conference. The Red Dragons will look to stop the bleeding this Friday when they make their annual trip to the North Country. Their first stop is Potsdam State on Friday at 5:30 PM and then on to Plattsburgh for a Saturday matinee.
