Plattsburgh State 66 Oswego State 59

I was fairly close with my prediction on this one as I had the Cardinals winning by a 74-71 final. Both teams were a little short of my projections but I didn't get a chance to use my usual formula for any of my picks today due to a time shortage.

Plattsburgh State wins the biggest game of the regular season so far and may be the one, that when we look back, can point to as the deciding factor in who gets to host the SUNYAC Tournament. Geneseo is right in the hunt for that prize, probably more so than Oswego after today's games, so there is still a lot of basketball to be played yet.

Oswego opened up with a 10-1 opening burst but the Cardinals came right back with a 13-2 run of their own to take a 14-12 lead on the strength of 3 Reggie Williams inside moves and a pair of 3 pointers by Ezra Hodgson and Kyle Richardson. The Lakers then got back to back layups by Mark Candelario and Brian Sortino  to regain the lead but it was the last time they enjoyed that luxury. Five straight points by Xavier Thomas, a three ball and another jumper put the Cardinals back in front for good at 19-16 with 7:37 left to play in the half. Reggie Williams scored the next 6 points for Plattsburgh to counteract 4 points for Oswego by Rashawn Powell. The Cards' Jordan Moody then got 4 points and the Lakers Walter Sampson got 3 to make the score 31-28 Plattsburgh. After Rashawn Powell hit a free throw for Oswego to cut the lead to 2 points with 24 ticks left, Cardinal Coach Curle made the decision to insert normal starter and top 3 point shooter, Eddie Correa, who was resting his injured wheel for the stretch run next week.  Correa was set up for the final Cardinal possession to attempt his specialty shot and he didn't disappoint as he buried a three pointer with 11 seconds to go. Sortino misfired at the buzzer and the Cardinals went into the locker room with a 34-29 advantage.

It took the Cardinals 51 seconds into the 2nd half to open up the first double digit lead of the game, as Jordon Moody drained a three ball and Reggie Williams scored another layup inside. After Rashawn Powell scored to bring it back to single digits, the Cardinals got a three pointer from Ezra Hodgson and another one from Jordan Moody, to sandwich a Brian Sortino layup and the lead was back up to 12. After a total of 7 missed shots between the 2 teams, over the next two minutes, Williams and Hodgson finally scored inside on the next two Cardinal trips down the floor. The lead had ballooned to 16 points at 49-33 with 14 minutes left and the Oswego coaching staff was forced to call a time out to regroup. And regroup they did!! Sortino scored on a layup, Ian Schupp hit a triple, Dustin Pond did likewise and Walter Sampson made a layup and in a 4 minute stretch the Lakers reeled off a 10-0 run to make it 49-43 and get themselves right back into the game. The Cardinals' Mike Mitchell finally broke the the visitors' drought with a long 3 pointer and after an Oswego misfire, Williams scored inside again for Plattsburgh, to once again give them a double digit lead at 54-43. Back came Oswego with a 3 pointer by Pond and another one by Sortino and the lead was the lowest since the early part of the 2nd period at 54-49 with 6:50 to go.

Still up by 5 points with under 3 minutes to go, Plattsburgh's Jordan Moody canned his 3rd 3 pointer of the game to give the Cardinals some breathing room with a 59-51 lead and 2:45 on the clock. Mitchell hit a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 10 points but Sortino and the Lakers made one final push. Sortino scored on a 3 pointer and after Plattsburgh missed the front end of a 1&1, he scored again on a layup and was fouled. He completed the 3 point play to make it 61-57 with 45 seconds left. The Lakers had to foul and Mitchell hit another pair from the line. Sortino scored on the ensuing possession for Oswego but that was the last basket they could hit. Plattsburgh hit more free throws to make the final score of 66-59.

The  Lakers had trouble matching up with Reggie Williams as the big guy led the Cardinals with 19 points on 8x11 shooting from the field. He was a beast on the boards today as well, finishing with a game high 14 rebounds, to grab his 6th double-double of the season. He tied his career high in rebounds and that occurred the last time he played Oswego back on January 16th when he had 24 points and 14 rebounds against the Lakers. He also had 3 more blocks and a pair of assists.  He continues to lead the SUNYAC in field goal percentage and blocked shots.

Jordan Moody was close behind with 17 points (4x10 fg, 3x6 3's, and 6x8 ft) for his 6th straight double figure performance since his promotion to the starting lineup. Jordan is averaging 15.3 ppg in that stretch which would make him the top scoring threat for Plattsburgh at the moment.

Ezra Hodgson and Mike Mitchell both had 8 points with Hodgson hitting a pair of key 3 pointers and Mitchell adding 4 more assists to his SUNYAC leading total.

Kyle Richardson added  5 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a block off the bench and Xavier Thomas had 6 points and 3 boards in 16 minutes of floor time.

Shamoy McIntosh failed to crack the scoring column for only the 2nd time all season but did have 10 rebounds 2 assists and a steal.

The team stats were fairly even as the Cards shot 21x50 (42%) from the field to 22x60 (38.9%) for the Lakers. Plattsburgh made 9x24 from long range and Oswego was 7x18. Cards were 15x21 from the line and Oswego was 8x10. Plattsburgh had a big margin off the glass, 43 to 27 and had 10 second chance points to 4 for Oswego. Plattsburgh did have 17 TO's to only 10 for the Lakers.

Oswego was led by Brian Sortino who had a game high 25 points (10x22 fg, 3x7 3's, 2x3 ft).  Rashawn Powell had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and a block. Dustin Pond had 9 points and 4 rebounds, while Walter Sampson also had 9 points with 3 assists.

Plattsburgh moves into sole possession of 1st place for the first time since the 2007-08 season. The  Cardinals improve their record to 16-6 overall and 11-4 in the SUNYAC. They will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Potsdam to take on the Bears at 5:30. Then they return home for the final two games of the season against Brockkport and then Geneseo which may be the game to determine the top seed and host of the SUNYAC tournamemt.

Oswego, 15-8 overall, drops into 2nd place with an 11-5 YAC mark, a half game ahead of Geneseo, but tied in the loss column. Geneseo also owns a win against the Lakers and the game between these two, which takes place on Tuesday at 5:30 could help the Cardinals or hurt the Lakers. A loss by Oswego would probably relegate them to a 3rd seed and they would no longer have any chance for the conference regular season crown or a first round bye. A win by Oswego would certainly help the Cardinals chances of clinching the top seed.  Go Lakers!! ;D

Wow...less than 1 week left. 1 thing is for sure, if you lose 9 games then you are out. 10-8 probably wont get you in. 11-7 will do the trick (depending on who has 9 losses) in at least 2/3 cases. 12-6 should get you a home playoff. 13 wins should get you a 1st round bye. I need some Pepto Bismol...about 6 days worth!  I can't stand this pressure!!

No excuses needed....I did go 8-1 over the weekend, picking 2 underdogs and only losing the Oneonta-Brockport pick on Friday.  ;)

So many things on my plate this past week that I was remiss in my normal duties of pointing out who the SUNYAC Playerof the Week was. My apologies to Gordon Lyons who, for the 3rd time this season, (and it could have been for about the 8th time this season) was selected as the SUNYAC honoree.  This was for the week that ended on February 8th. Here is the write up from the YAC website:

Gordon Lyons, Geneseo

Lyons led the Knights to a 2-0 week, picking up wins at Oswego, 59-55, and Brockport, 76-62. In the victory over the Lakers, he totaled 18 points and 12 rebounds before compiling 21 points, 17 boards and five assist in the victory over the Golden Eagles. The nation's leader in rebounding has now notched a double-double in 18 of 19 games this season.

Gordon previously won the YAC POTW on 11-24-14 and also on 12-5-14. He continues to lead the nation in rebounding with 13.1 rpg. He also has compiled a double-double in 20 of 22 games and is in 2nd pace in the country in that category. The leader is only ahead of him because he has played 1 more game than Gordon and has a double-double in 21 of 23 games. He leads the SUNYAC in scoring with a 20.6 ppg average and is shooting 55.6% from the field despite playing the past 5 weeks with a tendon injury to his shooting hand.  This D3hoops pre-season 2nd team All American has certainly lived up to his billing and the big question is whether or not he moves up to First Team All American at year's end. He certainly has the credentials to do so. Congratulations Gordon. I look forward to seeing you in action this weekend when you travel up here to the North Country to take on my Plattsburgh State Cardinals. I'm hoping you get another double-double against us, just as long as it isn't some outrageous number with 30 and 20. ::) I'm thinking 13 and 10 would be good on Saturday. You can have the 30 and 20 on Friday night over in Potsdam. ;D

I can't do that because I have to make out the schedule for the final week of the National Pick 'Em League over on the Multi Regional Topic Board. That involves a lot of work that will most likely take up most f my free time today. Then tomorrow it's off to Potsdam to take in the Cardinals-Bears game live. Never a dull moment.

And if that wasn't bad enough, my back went out yesterday and i can't even walk. Off to the chiropractor, right now, and hoping for a miracle. :P :(

Damn magicman... you jinxed me. My back has been killing me the past 24 hrs. Coach Ansari recommended a acupuncturist (sic?) for me. Gonna see her tomorrow!

How did I jinx you? I haven't spoken to you on the phone in days and haven't been within 500 miles of you in weeks.

And don't listen to Coach Ansari. Go see a back cracker, I don't trust those pin stickers one bit. ::)

Off to see the Cardinals take on the Potsdam bears this evening over in Potsdam. Hope it's a trip home that'll put a smile on my face.

Three games on tap for today:

Oswego State  at  Geneseo State      5:30 PM  This is the Game of the Day
Both of these teams still harbor hopes of gaining the top seed for the playoffs. After tonight only one will be left standing to challenge Plattsburgh. Oswego, after sitting in first place for most of the year, could find themselves in third place after this one is over. geneseo now seems to be the main threat to the Cardinals for the top seed as the Knights have reeled off 5 straight conference wins in a row. Nobody's had a longer streak. The oddsmakers have made the Knights a slim 3 point home favorite. I like them as well but I'm hoping that the Lakers can pull off the upset here. I can't pick them to do so however as Geneseo has been on fire. Knights win this one by a 68-64 final score.

Cortland State  at   Brockport State      5:30 PM

Brockport doesn't want to have to win two games next weekend in the North Country to qualify for the tournament. A win tonight will go a long way in locking up that playoff berth and putting a big hurt on the Red Dragons. Both teams need this game and I think that Brockport will  confound the experts who have made Cortland a slim 2 point favorite. I'm taking the Golden Eagles at home to win by a hard fought 69-66 final.

Plattsburgh State      Potsdam State      5:30 PM

The Cardinals better not take the Bears lightly here just because they finally have first place all to themselves. Funny things have happened on the way to the playoffs. The oddsmakers have Platttsburgh rated as an 18  point road favorite. This game could make Potsdam's season. Card's should win by a comfortable margin though and I think the coaching staff will have them ready to take care of business. Plattsburgh 85 Potsdam 66.
