Sitting at SUNY Oneonta in hopes of seeing my Bengals clinch a home court playoff game.  Oneonta needs this game to go to the playoffs, so intensity is the word of the day.  On a more somber note, 1 of the Oneonta coaches just informed some Bengal coaches that before the game there will be a ceremony honoring Terrance Parker. He played for Oneonta last year and died from a stroke in August of last year. The Senior day ceremony will be in honor of him and his family who will be in attendance!

Prayers out from the Buffalo State crew to Terrance Parker and his family.  Sort of puts everything into perspective !

Go BENGALS!

And

God Bless the family of Terrance Parker!!

Eight scenarios that can take place as a result of today's games

The team in parentheses is the team that broke the tiebreaker when two teams had identical records. For example Oswego and Buff State both tied with 12-6 records and split their head to head meetings so you start with the top team and work down through the standings. In this case they were both swept by Plattsburgh, but Oswego swept Brockport, while the Bengals split with Brockport so Brockport is the tiebreaker that would give the Lakers the #2 seed over Buffalo State.  Also Brockport  and Geneseo tied with 11-7 marks and split their season series. Starting at the top, Brockport split with Plattsburgh while Geneseo got swept by Plattsburgh which makes Plattsburgh the tiebreaker giving Brockport the 4th spot and Geneseo 5th place.

Scenario 1
BSC, Plt and  Bpt win

Plt (14-4)            1
Osw 2 (12-6)         2 (Bpt tiebreaker)
BSC (12-6)            3
Bpt (11-7)            4 (Plt tiebreaker)
Gen (11-7)            5
Cor (10-8)            6

Scenario 2
BSC, Gen, and Bpt win

Plt (13-5)            1
Gen (12-6)            2 (Plt )
Osw (12-6)            3 (Bpt )
BSC (12-6)            4
Bpt (11-7)            5
Cor (10-8)            6

Scenario 3
BSC, Plt, and Pot win

Plt (14-4)            1
Osw (12-6)            2 (Bpt)
BSC (12-6)            3
Gen (11-7)            4
Cor(10-8)            5 (Osw)
Bpt (10-8)            6

Scenario 4
BSC, Gen and Pot win

Plt (13-5)            1
Gen (12-6)            2 (Plt)
Osw (12-6)            3 (Bpt)
BSC (12-6)            4
Cor (10-8)            5 (Osw)
Bpt (10-8)            6

Scenario 5
One, Plt and Bpt win

Plt (14-4)            1
Osw (12-6)            2
Bpt (11-7)            3 (Plt)
Gen (11-7)            4 (One)
BSC (11-7)            5
One (10-8)            6 (Cor)

Scenario 6
One, Gen and Bpt win

Plt (13-5)            1
Gen (12-6)            2 (Plt)
Osw (12-6)            3
Bpt (11-7)            4 )Plt)
BSC (11-7)            5
One (10-8)            6

Scenario 7
One, Plt and Pot win

Plt (14-4)            1
Osw (12-6)            2
Gen (11-7)            3
BSC (11-7)            4
Bpt (10-8)            5 (One/Cor)
One (10-8)            6 (Cor)

Scenario 8
One, Gen and Pot win

Plt (13-5)            1
Gen (12-6)            2
Osw (12-6)            3
BSC (11-7)            4
Bpt (10-8)            5 (One/Cor)
One (10-8)            6 (Cor)

If Brockport Loses, and Oneonta State wins then Brockport, Oneonta and Cortland will all end up with 10-8 records. If that happens then we see how each team did against the other 2 teams. Brockport beat Oneonta twice and split with Cortland so they would have a 3-1 record. Oneonta beat Cortland twice and lost to Brockport twice so they would have a 2-2 record.  Cortland would end up with a 1-3 record against the other two teams. So Brockport would come in 5th place, Oneonta would take the 6th spot and Cortland would end up in 7th position and out of the playoffs.

The New Paltz-Fredonia game has no bearing on the playoffs because the Hawks loss to Buffalo State last night eliminatd them from playoff consideration. They can only get to 9 wins if they beat Fredonia today and the 6th place team will have 10 wins.

I believe that covers every possible scenario.

magicman

Now that all the possible scenarios have been put out there this is how I think things end up.

1.  Plattsburgh    14-4     The Cardinals take care of Geneseo today by a 75-68 final

2.  Oswego          12-6    The idle Lakers will get the 2nd seed and a bye into the semi-final round.

3.  Brockport        11-7    The Golden Eagles take care of Potsdam by a 72-62 score and get a home playoff game

4.  Geneseo          11-7    Genseo despite the loss to the Cardinals also end up with a home playoff game

5.  Buffalo State    11-7    The Bengal lose at Oneonta by an 86-83 final  and will  travel to Geneseo on Tuesday

6.  Oneonta          10-8     These Red Dragons have more to play for than the Bengals doand win a close one.

7. Cortland           10-8     These Red Dragons will be the biggest fans that Buffalo State will have today, but they
come up short in the end.

8.  New Paltz         9-9      They win their finale over Fredonia by a 75-62 final score. Too little too late.

9  Potsdam State    1-17    There's always next year

10. Fredonia          1-17    Same as above. I put them in 10th because Potsdam had 2 wins against D3 teams and
the Blue Devils only had 1. That win against Pitt-Titusville wasn't much better than a scrimage.

So I don't post on the d3 BB board at all, but I'm curious after reading the Pool C board on the other thread that Plattsburgh isn't mentioned at all, even in the post about Pool A team's shot at Pool C.  Do they have to win the tourney to get into the NCAAs?  Would the East Region really not get any at-large bids?

Dave 'd-mac' McHugh

It wouldn't be the first time a region didn't get any bids... Atlantic didn't get any last year... Mid-Atlantic got one.

I am not sure the East Region is in a position where at large bids should be expected... but I need to dive into the numbers more.

It's certainly possible that a small region such as the Atlantic or East could get shut out of at-large bids in any given year. With seven losses already and an eighth loss which would toss them into Pool C, Plattsburgh would not be in great shape for an at-large bid.

If we get an 8th loss and end up in Pool C, which will happen if we win the semifinal game and lose in the championship contest, that will give us a 19-8 record. I agree with you, we won't be in great shape, but that is exactly the record we had 2 years ago when we won in the semifinals and lost to Cortland in the championship game and we did get a Pool C bid that year (and a first round home game). I'm hoping that history doesn't have to repeat itself, because we win the automatic bid this weekend. Unless of course we don't and then I hope it's deja vu all over again. ;D

Dave 'd-mac' McHugh

A 19-8 record (.704) and a .526 SOS I think puts you right on the Mendozza line of getting into the tournament. I could see arguments for and against... though, I haven't looked at all of the data like vRRO and such.

Tonight's SUNYAC Tournament Games:

#5 Buffalo State at #4 Brockport State   7:00 PM

These teams split their regular season matchups with each team winning on the other teams court. When Brockport won the first meeting back on January 6th in Buffalo, the Golden Eagles built up a 17 point lead in the 2nd half, and held off a spirited Bengal comeback that got them as close as 4 points with 48 seconds left as Port won by a 77-70 final. The return engagement in Brockport only 10 days later was a complete turnaround as it was the Bengals who jumped all over Brockport early and often as they built a lead of 18 points in the 1st half. The 2nd half was more of the same as Buffalo State extended the margin to as much as 30 points. The final score of 85-69 wasn't indicative of just how dominant the Bengals were in this game. The oddsmakers have listed Brockport as a very slim 1 point favorite which makes it basically a tossup.

I'm thinking that Buffalo State has a few more horses than Brockport does and although both teams overcame sluggish starts this season I believe the Bengals came on stronger in th 2nd half and will win this game by a  78-74 final score.

#6 Oneonta State at #3 Oswego State  7:00 PM

Twice these teams have hooked up and Oswego has won both games in overtime. Actually needed 2 overtime periods in the first meeting.  Can Oneonta be that unlucky to lose to the Lakers for a third time? The oddsmakers say they will and have made Oswego a 5 point favorite. I think that the Red Dragons will pull off the upset here and finally exorcise their demons. I'm taking Oneonta by a 74-71 final score.
