You know that I always enjoy the annual visit when Buffalo State rolls into Plattsburgh. I always enjoyed it more when my favorite Bengal, Jake Simmons, was part of that visit. So sad to hear of his recent health problems but glad to see he's on the road to recovery...again.

Thanks for sharing that article, Champ. I was especially happy to hear there is a Jake the 3rd. Tell Coach Ansari to get that kid signed up to the Buffalo State family right away. You just know that he's going to be a chip off the old young block. ;) Give Jake my best if you get a chance. My thoughts and prayers are with him.

Thinking hard about watching tHe late game....the game of the night, imo, on the flat screen.  Expect your team to hold serve....congrats on three things....winning the LEC pick'm contest, getting high speed internet at home, and finally having Plattsburgh host...getting the top seed in TE conference.
Expect you will be at the game tonight...smile since I maybe watching for you!

amh63,

Thanks for the congrats. I will be behind the Plattsburgh bench all the way up to the top row so I can sit with my back against the wall of the gym. I will be the old guy, silver beard, with the tan Saratoga cap on wearing a dark green pullover. Not sure if where I sit is conducive to a good camera angle. Probably sitting next to me or close by will be Kyle Richardson's mom and dad.  Hope we in this one but Brockport matches up well with us and they have a great coach. Should be a good game.

SUNYAC Semifinals Friday February 27th at Plattsburgh State's Memorial Hall

#3 Oswego State (17-9)  vs  #2 Geneseo State (16-9)     5:30 PM

Geneseo brings their All American Gordon Lyons and a very disciplined offense against an Oswego team led by by their point guard Brian Sortino. Should be an excellent game and the oddsmakers have made the Knights a slim 1 point favorite. The teams split the season series each winning on the other's home court. I'm thinking that the Knights will win the rubber match as they seem to like Plattsburgh's Memorial Hall, but it's really a flip of the coin. Geneseo 73 Oswego 70

#4 Brockport State (15-11)  at  #1 Plattsburgh State (18-7)  7:30 PM

The Golden Eagles after losing last year's East Region Player of the Year and All American, John Ivy, as well as a number of other excellent players off of last year's 24-6 NCAA squad are right back in the thick of things once again. And the fact they are the lowest seed left doesn't mean a thing. Several years ago when the top 8 seeds made the conference tournament,  Brockport an 8th seed won it all. There is a reason that Coach Greg Dunne was not only the SUNYAC Coach of the Year last year, but the National Coach of the Year as well. He gets as much out of his players as anyone.

Coach Curle has had the most success of any SUNYAC coach since his arrival at Plattsburgh a dozen or so years ago. Plattsburgh will be trying to gain entry into the NCAA tournament for the 7 time is the past 10 years. No one in the East Region can match that record. This will be a great match up of not only two fine teams, but two outstanding coaches. The SUNYAC is lucky we still have them both.

The oddsmakers have made the Cardinals a 7 point home favorite but I think the game will be decided by fewer points than that. These teams also split their regular season games, each winning at home. Brockport whipped Plattsburgh by a 71-52 score in a game that Plattsburgh was never a factor. The Cardinals returned the favor just a week ago winning by a 60-45 margin that was closer than the final score indicates. I, course, will be picking my Cardinals to win this one but it won't be easy with the swarming defense and guard play that the Golden Eagles bring to the table. Plattsburgh wil take this one by a 68-63 final score.

Magicman...your boys hold the post season in their hands.   Enjoyed watching last night's game, though the coverage was a little off at times.  First, the camera view is away from the bench side...therefore no shots of your smiling face! :). Seems NSN was adjusting the broadcast at times and the video went in and out of focus and there was an audio " ghost" at times.  The replay finally got to working with the actual broadcast breaks.
Plus K to even the numbers and the scenes on the sidelines.  seems both coaches were working the refs....was waiting for a tech on one.  How can coaches get away from standing on the floor of play during actions?

#1 Plattsburgh State 71  #4 Brockport State 50

Defense had the featured role in his game as both teams were all over each other which led to a low scoring affair especially in the first half. The teams fought through an opening 7 minutes and the score was 7-5 in favor of the Cardinals. Brockport tied it at 7 on a Daniel Aiello layup, but the Cardinals were the first team to get into double figures when Ezra Hodgson hit a pair of free throws to make it 11-7 with 10:30 left in the half. The Cardinals continued their scoring surge and ultimately outscored the Golden Eagles 13-0 over a 6 minute period to move in front 20-7 with 6:20 to go. After Hodgson's free throws, the Cardinals got a jumper from Kyle Richardson, a layup by Hodgson, a 3 pointer by Jordan Moody, followed by another layup from Reggie Williams and Brockport never got the lead below double digits for the rest of the half. The teams went nito the break with the Cardinals up by a 29-19 score.

Jordan Moody, just as he did in the first half, started the Cardinals scoring in the 2nd by getting a fast break layup. Clifton Lyerly then hit a 3 pointer for Brockport to cut the lead to 9 points. That was as close as the Golden Eagles would get for the rest of the game. 5 straight points by Shamoy McIntosh, 3 points from Hodgson and another layup by Richardson completed a 10-0 run to increase the Cardinal lead to 19 points at 41-22 with 13:00 minutes to play. Brockport would never get closer than 16 points the rest of the way and the lead ballooned as high as 27 with 3:06 remaining. There would be no huge comeback similar to the one that occurred last year when Brockport overcame a 20 point Cardinal lead to win the SUNYAC Championship. Both coaches emptied their benches as Plattsburgh wrapped up the 71-50 win.

Jordan Moody was the games' high scorer with 19 points (7x16 fg, 3x7 3's, 2x2 ft) and 4 rebounds. Kyle Richardson, on crutches just a week ago after a nasty fall against Geneseo, came off the bench to score 11 points 5x7 fg, 0x1 3's, 1x5 ft),
grab a game high, 7 rebounds, and record 3 steals in 22 minutes of court time. Big man Reggie William had 10 points (2x8 fg, 6x8 ft), 6 rebounds, 2 assists and a block. The X-Man, Xavier Thomas, had 8 points ( 1x4 fg, 6x6 ft) 5 rebounds, 3 spectacular blocks, 2 steals and 1 assist in 19 minutes off the bench. Shamoy McIntosh, came on strong in the 2nd half to finish with 7 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Point Guard Mike Mitchell did likewise. After ending the 1st period with no points or rebounds, Mitchell scored 6 points and had 5 rebounds in the 2nd half. He also added to his SUNYAC leading assist total with a game high 8 dimes.

Brockport was led by freshman Hamed Shamseldin who came off the bench each half and provided a spark for the Golden Eagles. He ended up with 16 points (5x11 fg, 1x3 3's, 5x6 ft) and 4 rebounds in 26 minutes on the court. Patrick Modzelewski had 12 points (4x12 fg, 2x6 3's, 2x3 ft) and 5 rebounds. Levi Pace had 4 points, 7 rebounds and a pair of blocks. Clifton Lyerly was in early foul trouble and only scored 4 points with 6 rebounds. Mike Gallagher had 6 points on a pair of 3 pointers.

Plattsburgh held the Golden Eagles to a 17x57 field goal effort resulting in a 29.8% mark. Tough to win when the ball isn't falling through the hoop. Brockport was 7x23 from long distance (30.4%) and 9x13 from the line (69.2%)

The Cardinals didn't shoot much better from the field going 20x55 (36.4%). They were 5x15 from downtown (33.3%) and 26x32 from the line (81.3%), one of their best efforts all year from the charity stripe.

Plattsburgh won the rebounding battle 45-35 and had 13 turnovers to 17 for Brockport.

Plattsburgh improves to 19-7 and will face off against Oswego at 4:00 PM this afternoon for the SUNYAC Championship.

Brockport ends their season with a 15-12 record. They had a starting five that consisted of 4 sophomores and a junior. They only lose 2 players off this years' roster and the freshman, Shamseldin, that came off the bench, will only get better. They will be a force to reckon with next year in the SUNYAC and will be right back in the thick of the playoff picture.

amh63,

Yes they do and even with a loss today we still may be alive for a Pool C bid as our 19-8 record (with a loss ) is what we were 2 years ago after losing in the championship game and we got in that year. We even hosted (and won) a first round game before losing to your LJ's the year they won the title.

Yes, the camera usually doesn't show the side of the court I'm on because I sit behind the team bench. I thought that maybe once in a while they might show that side of the gym. It seems like there is more than one camera but some of the others may be from different organizations such as the schools or local tv stations.

Coaches always get away with that. Also get away with staying in the designated areas they are supposed to stay in.

Hope we can walk away with the SUNYA crown later today. I'm leaving in a short while to go to the game. Will be a close one today I think.

Championship game today at 4 PM

Oswego State at Plattsburgh State

Oswego beat Oneonta State three times this year to get to this point. All of them were very close games. I'm hoping that the Cardinals can pull off the same kind of threepeat against the Lakers. Both of the regular season games went Plattsburgh's way but they were close games with the outcome in doubt until the final minutes. I expect more of the same today. The Cardinals need to keep Brian Sortino and Kyle Covley under control. Lakers need to find a way to clamp down on Reggie Williams and Jordan Moody. Both teams have numerous players that can hurt you however, so limiting the leading scorers won't guarantee you a win.

The oddsmakers have made the Cardinals a slim 4 point favorite which is basically the home court advantage. Plattsburgh has won 5 of the past 6 meetings, previous to that the Lakers had won 4 in a row. I'm hoping it's more of the former than the latter and the Cards make it 6 of the last 7. Plattsburgh wins a tight one 75-70.

SUNYAC Championship

Oswego State 70 Plattsburgh State 58

Congratulations to the Lakers for winning the Conference Championship. They played a great game and were the better team today. I hope they represent the SUNYAC well and win a few games for all of us.

Well, I was still hoping Plattsburgh would sneak in with one of those last Pool C bids.  It's been eye-opening getting more into the Division III basketball process.  As with hockey (which I follow more closely), if you don't win your conference, you have no one to blame but yourself!  See you in 2015-2016!

Good luck to the Lakers in the tournament!
