Two games on tap today in the SUNYAC.

Medaille  at  Fredonia State        2:30 PM

Once again the Blue Devils will try and get their 1st win of the season. Once again they will come up empty. Oddsmakers have the Medaille Mavericks favored by 7 points. I don't think it will be that close.  The Mavericks hung with a pretty good Geneseo team only losing 89-85. They have also beaten a decent St. Lawrence team.
Medaille comes away with an 80-64 win.

Middlebury     vs   Oswego State        7:00 PM  @ Univ. of Rochester

Middlebury finally broke into the win column at the expense of New Paltz on Tuesday night. Now they try for a SUNYAC winning streak. THe oddsmakers say that won't happen as they have Oswego favored by a 3 point margin on this neutral court matchup.  Middlebury lost at St. Lawrence 63-57.  Oswego won at St Lawrence 73-67. Do you see where I'm going here? I'll take the Lakers to win 74-68.

Oswego State leads Middlebury 53-40 with 6:47 left to play.

Medaille  defeats Fredonia State by a 95-74 final score.

I was afraid that the MOV would be much larger than the 7 points that had been predicted. I had the final margin at 16 points, 80-64, but the Mavericks ended the game on a 17-4 run that boosted the MOV even higher. Fredonia hung with Medaille for a good portion of this game, resulting in a first half that was a back and forth affair. Fredonia actually had a 1 point lead at the break, 42-41, led by 10 points from Richard De La Cruz.

Medaille gradually forged ahead and by the 12 minute mark had opened up a 12 point 64-52. For the next 8 minutes the Mavericks' lead would fluctuate between 8 and 15 points. With under 4 minutes to play and down by 16 points the foul parade started leading to the final score.

Richard De La Cruz was the high man for the Blue Devils with 21 points. Ian Helps had 13 points and a team high 6 boards. TYler Roberts had 12 points.

Medaille got a game high 27 points from Miles Newcomb, along with 6 rebounds. Chris Willingham had 21 points, 8 assists, and 5 rebounds.

Fredonia is now 0-5 and will next open conference play when they host Oswego State on 12-4 at 7:30 PM.

Oswego State 70 Middlebury 55.

I had this as a 74-68 Oswego win. MOV got a little larger in the final few minutes as Oswego, up by 8 at 57-49 ended the game on a 13-6 run. Oswego led for almost the entire game except for a brief few minutes at the start of the contest.

Walter Sampson with 17 points was high man for the Lakers. Brian Sortino had 16 points and 6 rebounds, while Dustin Pond chipped in with 13 points. Mark Candelario with a game high 12 rebounds and Keith Tyson with 11 boards.

Matt St. Amour led Middlebury and was the game's high scorer with 23 points. Jake Brown added 13 points and Matt Dalet had 11 boards to lead the Panthers.

Oswego remains undefeated at 5-0 and will match up with host University of Rochester for the championship game on Sunday at 3 PM.

Middlebury drops to 1-3 and will play Johnson State in the consolation game at 1:00 PM.

Sunday November 29th.

Only game on the schedule today is the championship game of the Rochester Thanksgiving Tournament.

Oswego State at University of Rochester.  3:00 PM

Rochester enters this game with a 4-1 record with their best win coming in a 60-58 victory over a 2-2 Nazareth team. Their one loss was at the hands of Liberty League rival Hobart 87-70. Of interest is that the Lakers' SUNYAC rival, Buffalo State, owns wins over both Nazareth and Hobart. And the Bengals blew Hobart away by 20 points. I'd like to think that Oswego State and Buffalo State are 2 teams, along with several others,  that will fight for SUNYAC  supremacy this year. So I'm not sure where the oddsmakers are coming from when they make the Yellowjackets a slim 1 point favorite over Oswego. My initial reaction is to pick the Lakers by at least 6 points, even though the game is in Rochester. I think Middlebury would have beaten Rochester and think the championship game really took place on Saturday when the Panthers and Lakers met. On Sunday I'm taking the Lakers to win by a 75-67 final score and it wouldn't surprise me if the MOV was larger than 8 points.

Tough loss today for the Cortland State Red Dragon football team. NCAA makes them travel around 3000 miles to face one of the powerhouse programs in the country. They gave Linfield a good game before 10 unanswered 3rd quarter points left them in a 24-10 hole and ultimately a 38-22 loss. Proud of their effort.

Posting at 3:00 in the morning?   You are in mid season form already!! +k

Ditto on the congrats to Cortland's FOOTBALL team!  I watched the first 3 quarters and the Red Dragons looked capable of pulling off the upset at half time.  2nd half was a different animal as the Red Dragons qb just got pummeled! On a side note. After spending some time on the E8 football boards I must say that our Sunyac boards are a class operation.  The crap that folks say on that E8 boards about teams in their own conference is unbelievable. There was 1 poster hoping that the league only got 1 post season NCAA bid instead of 2 ( basically because his team wasn't going)! And this past week the Linfield folks were on the boards saying that they should win by 40...50.  That they were gonna " monkey stomp". (wtf?) Cortland.... and on and on! Classless IMHO. Kudos to CSU fans who didn't respond in similar fashion.  I'll take a Jdex, the Bear, 7express or the "Magic 1" any day of the week.  Always classy, even if they predict my Bengals will lose by 5!!!!! :)

Down to the wire at Rochester where Oswego has a 55-54 lead with 16 seconds left to play. Rochester has the ball and takes time out.

magicman

Oswego gets lucky and holds off the Yellowjackets as Rochester misses their final chance at the buzzer and Oswego grabs the rebound. final score 55-54.

Oswego 55 Rochester 54

I'm not sure where the Lakers offense went to but I find it hard to believe it could be the defense of Rochester that held their scoring down. After all this is a team that gave up 87 points to Hobart and just yesterday gave up 67 points to Johnson State. Johnson State, by the way has a record of, 4-36 in their last 40 games and has yet to win a game this season.

I'd like to say it was a close, well played, game but I didn't watch it because Rochester charges $6.95 to watch a webcast of their game. :P I've been burned before where you pay the price of admission only to discover it's a lousy webcast. So now if it's not a free webcast then I pass and watch another game that is free. Pretty sad that Rochester, with all the money that school receives in endowments, feels they have to charge their fans to watch a video of the team, especially a home game. :( They can probably watch all or nearly all of the team's road games for free. :o I think I'll root for Rochester to lose every game they play this year. :D

The main thing is they lost this one. I thought Oswego would blow this team out of the water. I predicted a 75-67 final score and quite frankly thought they would win by more. The Lakers didn't shoot the ball very well (only 18x53 fg, 8x26 3's, 11x17 ft) and when they shot out to a 12 point lead at 30-18 in the first half they allowed Rochester to close within 5 at the break 35-30. 5 minutes into the 2nd period the Yellowjackets had tied the game up at 35 and now it was a ballgame. After 5 minutes of Oswego maintaining a 1 or 2 possession lead, the Lakers finally got some separation and led 47-40 with 10:24 left to play. 6 straight Rochester points once again prevented the Lakers from expanding their margin. Tied at 54 with 1:47 on the clock, both teams missed opportunities to gain the upper hand. Oswego got 1 of 2 free throws from Brian Sortino with 81 ticks left and that would prove to be the winning point as neither team could make a field goal with their final possessions. A Rochester turnover was followed by an Oswego miss. The Lakers got the offensive rebound, missed a 3 pointer and Rochester rebounded and took a time out. They missed their final attempt and the Lakers let out one big collective sigh of relief.

Walter Sampson was the high man for the Lakers and the only one in double figures with 16 points. He also led the team with 4 assists. Brian Sortino and Kyle Coveley both had 9 points. Coveley shared rebounding honors with Keith Tyson as they both had 7 boards.

Rochester got 21 points each from Jared Seltzer and Sam Borst-Smith. Zack Ayers and Dylan Peretz both had 7 rebounds as well.

Oswego improves to 6-0 and will make the westward trip to Fredonia and Buffalo State for games this coming weekend to launch conference play. The Blue Devils are up first with a Friday gametime of 7:30 PM

Magicman....a little off topic here.  Your state schools...as well as private schools has been beating on the poor NESCAC teams.  Expect the schools in upper NY to be good in ice hockey.  Amherst's took a pounding by Elmira 6-3 in hockey...then goes to Nazareth in Rochester's suburbs and barely tied the small college in OT.  Now this Friday, I see that the Amherst men's soccer team is meeting a SUNY school in the Final 4!  Thought the the talent was in Football...not Fubul on a pitch! :)  Amherst's coaches seek talent around the World ....could save Cash and just head to the Empire State! ;D
May give you a call later in the week to check what are Amherst's chances on advancing.  Let me know on the MBB board....really confuse the posters...one way or other....know you are a busy man.

The Magic 1 is never too busy to talk about NY state schools. Especially those in the final 4! Its good to know that half of the final 4 come from the northeast!
