December 29th John Carroll 111  Brockport State 96

Well this was no surprise after Brockport spent 3 hours playing a game about 16 hours before this one started. All while John Carroll sat there and scouted the Golden Eagles and didn't have to play back to back games like Port did. I knew what my prediction of this game was going to be as soon as the game Brockport played the night before ended. I hoped it wouldn't get out of hand and I predicted an 84-74 John Carroll win. Wanted to be wrong in the worst way but figured I wouldn't be. I also said it could get ugly and hoped it wouldn't but thought that it would.

Truth be told, Brockport would probably lose to this team even if they were fresh, because the Blue Streaks are loaded this year, but I'm confident that the Eagles would have made this a much more competitive game and who knows possibly have pulled off an upset. It's one thing to play an entire game with a comfortable lead and quite another to play with every possession meaningful. Once JC got up by a healthy margin this game was over as Port didn't have enough gas in the tank to come back from a deep double digit deficit against these guys.

Not much to say about this one. Port got down early and they stayed down. The game wasn't as close as it looks. The deficit at times was 35 points and only Brockport's closing 16-2 run made it look somewhat respectable. Nice to see the guys in green and gold didn't give up and were still playing hard right to the end.

Brockport was led by 22 points from Devonn Gavin off the bench. Hamid Shamseldin had 17 and Clifton Lyerly had 10.

John Carroll had 5 guys too numerous to mention hit double figures.

Brockport falls to 5-2 and gets back from Florida to begin their journey in SUNYAC conference play. The Golden Eagles have two zeros on their card at the present time. They have had zero conference games so far this season and more surprising than that, they have yet to play a home game. On Tuesday January 5th they will take care of both of those zeros at the same time as they host the Orange Hot Bengals of Buffalo State. The Bengals, winners of 4 straight games will be in Tuttle North at 7:30 that night to try and keep their streak alive. That will be the featured game of the night in the YAC,

All-Time

I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Benglesrule last night before the Buffalo State game against Lehman.
I enjoyed my conversation with him. What a wonderful soft spoken man who does some fantastic work in the Buffalo area and really looks out for the kids who have come through the Buffalo state program. He loves Buffalo State almost as much as Magicman loves the Plattsburgh Cardinals.
I would love to see those two in a room together talking basketball.
I also had the pleasure of meeting one of his son's who made the trip down with him.
It really seems like a family atmosphere with the Buffalo State fans and their players. I know a lot of the players
want to come back after graduation and help out the basketball program. That is a tremendous tribute to Coach Ansari and his staff.
I've become a Big Fan of Buffalo State and the Plattsburgh Cardinals after having the pleasure of speaking to you guys.
Keep up the Great Posts and let 2016 be the year of the SUNYAC.
Wishing you and your families a Happy Healthy Prosperous New Year.

December 29th Gustavus Adolphus 55  Oneonta State 48

At least I could find a reason for Brockport's loss to John Carroll. I'm still rubbing my eyes as I look at this score, not quite believing what I'm seeing. Absolutely no way that the Red Dragons should lose this game. Especially after playing the teams that they have scheduled this year. Oneonta, I believe, has played one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country and certainly the SUNYAC conference. They are currently ranked as having the 33rd toughest schedule in all of Division III. And then something like this anomaly comes along.

The Gusties  put it to the Red Dragons right out of the gate and wasted little time in running out to a double digit lead as they were up 12-2 three minutes after the opening tip. Oneonta scored 5 straight points to halve that deficit, but a short time later the Gusties started a run that would take them over the next 10 minutes to a 31-13 lead with 5:14 remaining. In fact they held the Red Dragons to a grand total of 6 points, from the 16:27 mark down to the 1:11 mark, a period of over 15 minutes. Oneonta scored a layup, a 3 pointer and a single free throw in that timeframe. During that span  they missed 10 shots and  committed 4 turnovers that we know of. There may be more misses or turnovers, but curiously the live stat log is missing any information that took place between 4:57 down to 2:08, a period of nearly 3 minutes. Apparently the Oneonta players weren't  the only ones sleeping at this game.

The Red Dragons managed a pair of free throws inside the final minute, to cut the lead to 18 points at 33-15 heading into the locker room. I may be wrong but I'd be willing to bet that the 15 points scored in the first half might be a low point for Oneonta since the inception of the shot clock.

Needing some kind of lift out of the break to get back into this game the Red Dragons frittered away the first half of the period and were down 46-25 with under 11 minutes remaining. Instead of gaining ground, the hole was deeper. Still down 19 points with 10 minutes to go, Oneonta finally realized that they were actually in a basketball game and not sunbathing on the beach with the local beauties. They put a run together that would carry them all the way to within 4 points at 50-46, as they outscored the Gusties 18-3 in a little over 7 minutes. Two Ian Schuppp  back to back 3 pointers were the big blows that got them that close with 2:13 remaining. But that was as close as they got.

After stopping the Gusties on their next possession, Oneonta, needing to score came up short as well. A Gustavus grabbed the defensive rebound and was fouled. Then technicals were called on each side. When that was all said and done the Gusties had a 6 point lead, the clock stood at 43 seconds and the Red Dragons were running out of chances and time. Lawrence Coleman hit a jumper, Oneonta fouled and the Gusties made both free throws. Oneonta missed a 3 on the ensuing possession and that was all she wrote. One more Gustie free throw accounted for the final point. I think if there had been another 5 minutes to go in this game the Red Dragons would have won, but you have to come to play when the ball is tossed up for the initial tip off, you can't just play when you want to. Hopefully the team will learn from this game and bring it every night, especially next Tuesday. ;D

Lawrence Coleman was the only Red Dragon player to hit double figures as he had 15  points, 5 rebounds,2 blocks and a steal. Jackson Zuvuc with 8 points and Mikey McElroy with 7 were next in line in the scoring column.

What is amazing is that the Red Dragons actually outshot the Gusties from the field, 43.2% (16x37) to 41.2% (21x51). They also outshot them from 3 point range 7x18 to 4x11 and they were identical from the stripe, both making 9x13 free throws. The big disparity was in the rebounding battle as the Gusties killed them off the boards 36 to 20. That resulted in quite a few more shots taken by the Gusties and ultimately decided the outcome of this game. I believe that's one of the worst poundings off the glass that the Red Dragons have taken in some time.

Gustavus Adolphus was led by Chris Narum with a game high 17 points.

Oneonta falls to 6-3 (1-1 SUNYAC) and with the non-conference portion of their schedule now complete they will focus on obtaining a spot in the YAC tournament for that elusive NCAA bid. That will begin once more in earnest when they host the Oswego State Lakers, the preseason favorite and defending conference champs on Tuesday night January 5th at 7:30 PM.

One interesting note to pass on: the Massey Ratings updated their rankings earlier today and the #1 ranked SUNYAC team is now.....and I know that no one would guess this...The Oneonta Red Dragons.

Admit it....Of the top 7 teams in the YAC how many of you reading this, thought that Oneonta would be rated by Mr.Massey as the top team in the SUNYAC right now?

Especially after that horrible loss to Gustavus Adolphus, and yes, that loss was factored into the latest rankings. Massey has Oneonta jumping up 22 spots which landed them in 54th place. He has Oswego dropping 10 placements to 57th place and Plattsburgh dropping 13 spots to 70th place. He has Geneseo also dropping but only 4 spots which now puts them ahead of Plattsburgh in 64th place. He has Cortland down in the 92nd spot with a 7-1 record (only Oswego's 8-1 record is better) and none of the aforementioned 4 teams have even played a game since the last ranking were updated. Apparently those teams have dropped in the rankings because their opponents have suffered losses, that caused them to drop. A good example is Plattsburgh's earlier opponent Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds dropped 2 games in the past few days out in Vegas at the D3hoops.com Classic. They have tumbled 87 places in the rankings down to #107, even below Plattsburgh, a team they beat by 20+ points. Conversely that has caused the Cardinals to also drop in the rankings and possibly other teams that Plattsburgh played fell a few spots as well, although Oneonta is the only other team that Plattsburgh played, that has seen recent action. Brockport has also tumbled considerably, falling 31 positions all the way down to the 99th rung in the ladder, after going 1-1 in the Florida tournament, which again has been factored into their rankings.

However, the strangest placement of all and one that surely puzzles my friend from Buffalo State (as  well as yours truly) is where Massey has his Bengals spotted. Buffalo State, with probably sorry there's no doubt about it, some of the strongest non-conference wins of any SUNYAC team is only ahead of the 3 bottom dwellers of the YAC and is listed in the 109th spot, which is a drop of 6 places from their previous position. Massey is showing them with a 5-2-1 record. Excuuusse Me,  Mr Massey this ain't hockey, or football. There are no ties in basketball. Yesterday when I looked at the Massey Ratings and spotted that 5-2-1 record I clicked on Buff State and brought up what Massey was showing as their complete game log. He was showing the game against New Jersey City as a 119-119 score. So there's your tie. However today that same 5-2-1- record is next to the Bengals but the game against New Jersey City has mysteriously disappeared. Not only that but New Jersey City and Lehman don't even show up on the Bengals schedule. Their schedule shows the game they won against Alfred and then jumps to their next conference game against Brockport on January 5th. Mr. Massey, it would appear, seems to be out to lunch. Instead of showing Buffalo State with a 7-2 record, which no doubt with those last 2 wins would bump them up the rankings considerably, he instead, has them at 5-2-1. How does that 1 after the 5-2 not raise some kind of red flag? Massey also shows New Jersey City with a  7-2-1 record reflecting that tie game with Buffalo as well. And again the Buffalo State game doesn't show up in New Jersey's game log. What does show up is a game (with no score) against Lehman on Dec.30th, when in fact New Jersey City played and lost badly to Western Connecticut yesterday, not Lehman. So where are the Gothic Knights ranked...right below Plattsburgh and well ahead of Buffalo State at #71. Oh well, this isn't the first time Mr. Massey has butchered the Bengals and their record, along with their ranking. I wonder if he just doesn't like Buffalo...or maybe he just doesn't like Bengalsrule. The good news is that the NCAA doesn't consult with Mr.Massey when they go about choosing their at large teams for the Dance....At least I don't think they do, Champ. ;D

Thought you might have gotten a message!

Oooohhhhhh. Yes All-time told me that IF I journey to the north country next weekend, to have cab fare ready if I need a ride from a.....Burlington or was it Montreal. Anyway he let me know for a little bitty tiny fee all my moving around would be covered!  Good to know because that's a long way to go and not have a "willing" tour guide to show me around  ;).

Had the conversation during warmup and he left before team introductions! I was getting in hype mode!! ;D

You must have wax in your ears. Pretty sure the words little bitty and tiny weren't part of the converstion. Also pretty sure the message was: "No free rides when you show up in Plattsburgh this year. The taxicab meter will be running so bring your wallet." And cash only none of this credit card $h!t.

Also I got this message from you on December 29th:

"Last year you took me to a subway that have is a good deal. If the deal is still the same, do you think that I can bum another ride ;D??"

Translated with the help of my crystal ball I think this... "that have is a good deal".. is supposed to read ..."that gave us a good deal."

I think someone with large fingers was trying to use a phone to type and send a message.

Remember I sent you a message that said:

Champ,
At some point this year someone is going to walk up to you with a message from me and you need to pay attention. You won't know when it will happen but it will occur when you least expect it, somewhere on a court, far far from home.

Well that message was sent to you by my messenger, days before you sent me your message, proving once again, that my prognosticating abilities are 2nd to none. Knowing your request before you even requested it allowed me to send you the answer to your request so you would receive it on Wednesday, when you least expected it, on a court, far, far, from home.  Read that over again so you've got it.  ;D

And keep repeating to yourself all week long...cash, cash, I must bring lots of cash. There's snow on the ground here now and it's cold. It'll be tough on anybody forced to walk around to do their errands. Especially visitors.

Bengalsrule,

I don't have Ken Massey's phone number. However a connected guy like yourself, who counts presidential candidates on their list of friends, and spends half of your life on the phone, must surely have Massey's phone number. I suggest you go right to the source yourself and straighten him out. It's not like you lack ammunition to confront him with. ???
