Four conference games on tap for Tuesday

I'll do the afternoon game first and come back for the night games later.

Cortland State  at    New Paltz State      4:00 PM

This game pits the top of the standings with the bottom of the standings. Two teams headed in opposite directions as Cortland comes into this game with an 8-1 record versus the Hawks with a 1-7 log. New Paltz could have gained a 2nd win the other night against Kean but the accident involving the New Paltz players caused that game to be cancelled. I don't know which three New Paltz players were involved in that accident but have heard that two of them have been cleared to play with one remaining in the hospital.

Cortland is fresh off a double digit win over Medaille on Saturday Jan 2nd, while the Hawks are bound to be a bit rusty having been off since a December 8th loss to Springfield.

Even at full strength the Hawks are up against it here facing a solid Cortland team. The oddsmakers have made Cortland a 13 point road favorite. The Red Dragons should win by more than that, but as noted before, have a tendency to allow lesser teams to skate with them. Red Dragons are 7-3 against the Hawks over the past 5 years but one of those 3 Hawk wins came last year and it was the main reason that Cortland didn't make the SUNYAC tournament. Another Hawk win came against the vaunted 24-5 Cortland team of 2012-13, that made it to the Sweet 16. So nothing is a given.  Still I'll take Cortland in this one by an 84-65 final score.

Interesting.... women play at 2 and men at 4....on a weekday!  That schedule is usually reserved for Saturdays. Hey whatever New Paltz wants to do is ok with me!  :)

All-Time

4 Games on tap tonight in the SUNYAC.

I like Cortland over New Paltz.

Geneseo over Fredonia.

The next 2 games should be fun to watch and very tough to pick

Buffalo State coming off 2 big wins in the Coaches for Cancer tournament at Lehman College a few weeks ago visits Brockport tonight in a match up that will be fantastic.
Brockport at home is very tough, but I see Buffalo State winning this one in a barn burner 96-92

The next game is Oswego which is ranked #20 visiting the Red Dragons of Oneonta. This game like all the other games these 2 teams have played recently will be a very close contest. The only problem I see is Oswego has been off for a few weeks. That could be a very good thing or a very bad thing.
Oneonta coming off a big win against Central in Puerto Rico and than laying an Egg against Gustavus Adolphus the next day will be looking to regain their swagger back tonight.
I have Oneonta winning this one 82-78.

Enjoy the games.

Cortland on top at New Paltz 34-25 at the half. RDragons up 10-9 at 13 minute mark. JP Reagan cans two free throws, G. Carter and B. Estarfaa 3-pointers for 18-9 lead. A. McGuire layup off Carter feed makes it 30-13 at 6:08. At 3:48 it's 34-15. Hawks claw back. RJ Rosa follows a trey with a steal and layup to narrow the gap to 10. NP free throw concludes opening period scoring. Reagan in 10 minutes of work nets 11 pts(4x6fg, 1x1 3). Estarfaa with 6 points. Rosa with 11 pts (4x7fg, 3x4 3s) for hosts

Estarfaa lighting up NP in the second half. Scores 19 points in the first 9 minutes of the period to pace Corts to 63-36 lead. Estarfaa 8x11 from beyond the arc ........now with 24 points

Cortland all over New Paltz  81-50 with 46 point second half splurge paced by  ........
B. Estarfaa lights up NP in the second half. Scores 19 points in the first 9 minutes of the period to pace Corts to 63-36 lead. Estarfaa 8x11 from beyond the arc ........now with 24 points -- his finishing totals in 27 minutes of action.

Sixteen RDragons take the court, most score and see significant minutes at NP. JP Reagan with 11 points(4x7fg) in 14 minutes. Nice to see Justin Cooper back on the floor. Inserted in the second half and strikes for eight points(3x6fg). Impact newcomer this season who had missed previous two games. Averages nearly 10 points and six boards.

R. Rosa's 18 points(7x13fg, 4x7 3s) in 34 minutes lead the Hawks. New Paltz 1-8 and 0-3 in conference. Cortland 9-1, 3-0 and idle next next Tuesday vs. Geneseo

Three more games on Tuesday January 5th

Fredonia State  at  Geneseo State     7:30 PM

The Knights are coming off a month long layoff and haven't played since their last game in the Wendy's Classic back on December 5th. Fredonia hasn't played since they were thumped by Cortland on that same date. This will also be the first SUNYAC game that the Knights have played this season.

Like the earlier game today both these teams are a world apart. The Knights are 3 points from being undefeated with a 6-1 record, while Fredonia's only bright spot was a win over Alfred. I guess you could consider their close call against Oswego a bright spot as well. Geneseo is undefeated against Division III opponents and in the eyes of the NCAA that loss on their record to Roberts Wesleyan doesn't even exist.

The oddsmakers have made the host Blue Knights a big 19 point favorite in this one and recent history would seem to bear this out as Geneseo is 9-1 in the past 10 games against the Blue Devils. It's possible that Fredonia rises to the challenge and plays the rusty Knights, as tough as they did the Lakers, but I don't think that will happen. This Geneseo team is too good to let a little rust stop them tonight. This game of Blue on Blue will go to the Knights by a final score of 88-66.

Oswego State  at  Oneonta State      7:30 PM

The Lakers are the team covered in iron oxide heading into this matchup. They have been idle since their scrimmage game against Cazenovia back on December 11th. These Red Dragons managed to play a meaningful game against solid competition before daydreaming about the beach the next day. Their win over Central was impressive. Their loss to Gustavus Adolphus was depressive.

Recent history favors the Lakers, especially last year when Oswego won three hard fought games against Oneonta. The Lakers lead this series 8-3 over the past 5 years. Oswego is still smarting from the loss to the Bengals back on December 5th and another loss here would put them in a hole, against as many as 4 other teams, after this upcoming weekend.

Oneonta needs to prove they belong in the high rent district. For too long they have limped into the playoffs in 5th or 6th place or not at all. The oddsmakers have made the Red Dragon a slim 2 point home favorite. I don't know if I would favor them or not. I think that last year's Oneonta team with Zach Mager and Frankie Kelley and the current cast of veterans may have been better than this year's team. And that team couldn't get by the Lakers. I'm not sure this team can. I've been riding the Red Dragons most of the year but I'm thinking they come out on the short end tonight...by a 72-68 final score.

Buffalo State  at   Brockport State      7:30 PM

The Bengals have been on a roll lately and tonight they travel into the house of their nemesis, a team that has owned them over the past 4 years. Brockport has won 9 of the past 10 games and that's about as one sided as any series in the SUNYAC over a 10 game span. The good news for the Bengals is that lone win came last year in Brockport.

Buff State is coming off a 2 game holiday tournament in which they took out the leaders of the NJAC conference and the leader of the CUNYAC conference. Brockport meanwhile struggled to put away a Bridgeport State team that took them to 3 overtime periods and then got crushed by John Carroll.

The oddsmakers have made the Golden Eagles a very slim 1 point home favorite. That's like saying they are the underdogs. I've been back and forth on this one all day long. I've seen both teams play several games and I have to say at this juncture of the season I'm a little more impressed with the Bengals than I am with the Golden Eagles. But that's like saying pick your poison. I had to make a selection in my National Pick 'Em League since this was the final game of the week that ended tonight. And yes it was I who made out this week's schedule for that league. ;D  I went with the Bengals in the League and I'm going with the Bengals here. Buffalo State takes this one by an 82-80 final score.

Oneonta just putting a lickin on Oswego as they head into the break up 45-18. That sounds like a turnaround of the Gustavus game when the Red Dragons only had 15 or so at the break.

Fredonia leads Geneseo 43-41 at the half.

Ian Helps with 11points and 8 rebounds, Dante Williams with 9 points and Brandon Hodge with 7.

John Decker leads Geneseo with 14 points. Justin Ringen has 11 and Kevin Crockett has 8.

Brockport leads Buffalo State 36-29 at the break.

Pat Modzelewski leads the Golden Eagles with 11 points and 4 rebounds, as he goes 3x4 from long distance.
Clifton Lyerly has 8 points.

Lovell Smith has 8 points for the Bengals. Redell freeman has 6 points. Mike Henry has 5 points and 7 rebounds.

Oneonta whips Oswego  by a 90-52 final score to end a year of frustration against the Lakers. If this had been a fight they'd a stopped it in the 2nd round. Big win by the Red Dragons. They have moved into Park Place and will be a force to be reckoned with. Real glad my Cardinals have already made the trip to Dewar Arena and they came away with a win.

It would be nice if Brockport learned how to shoot free throws. That's all I really have to say in the late going.  ::)

Barnburners all over the place right now. Geneseo down 88-85 against Fredonia with just a few seconds left.

Buff State leads by a 74-69 lead with 47 seconds to play

Buff State just missed a pair that could come back and bite them in the A$$.
