The SUNYAC Player of the Week is Hamed Shamseldin from Brockport State. Here's the write up from the SUNYAC page:

Hamed Shamseldin, Brockport State
Lawrence, N.Y. / Lawrence

Hamed Shamseldin averaged 24 points, shot 46.6 percent (14-30) from the field, and dished out two assists per contest in a week that saw the Golden Eagles finish 1-1. In a triple overtime win against Bridgewater State University on Dec. 28, Shamseldin scored a career high 31 points, shooting 10-of-20 from the field, 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. The sophomore also picked up four rebounds, two assists and one block in the contest. Shamseldin netted 17 points the following day, in a tough loss to No. 10 ranked John Carroll University. The Lawrence, N.Y. native also added two assists and one rebounds in the loss.

Having met this kid last night I was impressed with his demeanor. He doesn't say much on the court or off. He appears to be a very quiet young man. He definitely has the respect of his teammates and coach Dunn. Looks like he's Brockports best chance at replacing Aaron White. B Port always seems to have that 1 guard who can take over a game ( i.e. Jon Ivy, who was in attendance last night, Brandon Carruthers and others).  Dunn always finds 1. Looks like this sophomore will be  the 1 for the next 3 years! Kudos!!!

January 5th   Buffalo State 81 Brockport State 73

Quite an exciting game the other night in Brockport. As a fan it was a great game to watch. Both teams played hard and either team could have walked of the floor with a W. I had the Bengals  winning this one in a barnburner by an 82-80 score. It was a barnburner and I only missed Buff State's score by a single point. If Port had made their free throws I coulda been closer on their end as well.

The Bengals trailed in this game from the opening tip as Brockport jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead thanks to a pair of long range bombs by Pat Modzelewski. The Bengals would close to within a point at 13-12 on a Lovell Smith jumper and a pair of Redell Freeman free throws with 10:23 left in the half. That would set the pattern for this game over the next 27 minutes of play as the Golden Eagles would maintain a lead of up to 9 points. The Bengals would respond every time and close to within a single possession but could never get over the hump and claim a lead. Toward the end of the half Buffalo State went from down 8, to down 4, to down 9 at 36-27 with less then a minute to play. Freeman scored on a drive to the hoop with 3 seconds left to cut the lead to 7 at the half, 36-29 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

The 2nd half didn't see much change. The Bengals got a pair of fee throws from Smith to narrow the lead once more, but back to back layups by Olusola Adeniran and Modzelewski matched Brockport's largest lead of the game at 9 points. Back came the Bengals and Nico McLean's 2 free throws with 16:17 on the clock cut it down to a single possession at 42-39.

Brockport failed to pull away and the Bengals couldn't gain a lead. This continued to play out over the next 10 minutes when the Bengals got a boost from Mike Henry. Down 65-61, Henry scored on a layup to cut it to 2 and after the Golden Eagles missed a layup on their end, Henry came down and scored inside once again to create the first tie score of the game at 65 apiece with 4:34 on the clock. Brockport missed a jumper but Levi Pace grabbed the offensive rebound and scored to give the Eagles the lead. Back came Henry 12 seconds later  to score inside again and tie it up. Henry followed that up with a steal and was fouled going to the basket. he made the first free throw and the Bengals had their first lead of the evening at 68-67 and their was 3:34 left to play.

Now each possession was critical and both teams missed opportunities on their 2 trips down the floor. Each team missed a shot and had a turnover. Then Pace scored to put Brockport back in front by a point, but once more Mike Henry, rose to the occasion and hit a jumper to give the Bengals the lead for the 2nd time. It would be a lead they would hold onto until the final buzzer. It was the 9th straight point that Henry had scored for the Bengals as he brought them from a 4 point deficit to the only 2 leads they had all night.

Brockport needing to keep pace with Buff State missed a layup and the Bengals big man Jordan Chateau scored inside (chateau means house and this guy is as big as a house) to increase the lead to 3 points with 1:18 left. Brockport needed to score and when they came up empty on a 3 point attempt, that set the stage for Jordan Glover to put his free throw shooting prowess on display. Five times Brockport put him on the line and Jordan responded by canning 9 of 10. This one was in the books and Buffalo State made a statement that maybe, just maybe, the road to the SUNYAC crown may go through the Queen City this year. This coming weekend will prove interesting.

Mike Henry was the MVP of this game as his double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds were game highs in both categories. His 9 straight points in crunch time were the most pivotal points in the game as well. He also had 3 assist and 3 steals.

Lovell Smith with 14 points and 5 rebounds along with Jordan Glover who also had 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals, also came up big for the Bengals. Jordan Chateau had 9 points and 5 rebounds. Redell Freeman had 8 points and was perfect shooting the rock, as he was 3x3 from the field, and 2x2 from the line. Nico McLean didn't score his usual amount but has 4 assists, 2 steal and 2 rebounds to go with his 4 points.

Statistically this game was fairly even as both teams had similar shooting percentages from the field and from long distance. The Bengal had a sizable edge from the line making 26 of 35 free throws (74.3%) to 13x24 for Brockport (54.2%). The 10 free throws that Jordan Glover had in the final 52 seconds, when Brockport was forced to foul, account for the discrepancy in numbers. The 5 missed free throws that Brockport had from the 8 minute mark to the point that Buffalo State tied the game up were one of the biggest factors that enabled the Bengals to come away with the win here.

Both teams committed a large number of turnovers...19 for the Bengals and 18 for the Golden Eagles, typical of the styles of defense that both teams play. Brockport had a slight edge on the boards of 40 to 38.

Brockport had 3 players in double figures with Clifton Lylerly leading the way in both points and rebounds. He had 19 points and just missed his double-double with 9 rebounds.  Patrick Modzelewski had 13 points and 7 rebounds, while Levi Pace came off the bench with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Matthew Smith had 7 points, 8 assists and 3 rebounds. Hamed Shamseldin scored 9 points, 2 assists and 2 steals, while    Devonn Gavin had 8 points and 2 rebounds off the bench.

Brockport now 5-3 (0-1) with a 2 game losing streak will look to get back on track when they host New Paltz and Oneonta this coming weekend.

Buffalo State improves to 8-2 overall (2-1) and will now make the long busride to the top of the state to visit the North Country. They will meet Potsdam on Friday night and then take on Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon in the featured SUNYAC game of the Day. January 5th  Oneonta State 90  Oswego State 52

This one wasn't a game. It was too one side to be called that. The Lakers got off the bus and must have ran into  whatever germ pool the Red Dragons brought back with them from Puerto Rico. And it had to be germs cause there's no island girls in Oneonta. How else do you account for the fact that Oneonta, coming off one of the worst halves of basketball that school has played in recent memory, (make that any memory, not just recent) when they scored a grand total of 15 points in their last game against Gustavus Adolphus, now takes the floor against the 20th ranked school in Division III, Oswego State, and the Lakers score, what has to be their worst point total in a half of only 18 points. That's too much of a coincidence. Something eerie and Twilight Zone-ish is in play here. Maybe Stephen King was in attendance. I had the Lakers winning this one by a 72-68 final. That wasn't even close.

This game was over with 11 minutes left in the first half. That was right after the Red Dragon's Ian Shupp buried a 3 pointer and then hit a jumper on Oneonta's next possession. I think something about a player, who was wearing a Laker uniform last year, and now was dressed in Oneonta Red this year, scoring 5 straight points, right in the middle of an Oneonta 20-2 run, was disconcerting to the players in green and gold. It was like hey...he's our guy, no wait...he's their guy. What to heck is going on here. ???

The Red Dragons lead was 30-10 and another 15-8 outburst had them up by a 45-18 score at the break. I don't think anyone's coming back from that lead against Oneonta on their home court. But just in case a 27 point lead wasn't enough, the Red Dragons belched some more fire and smoke to open up the half with an 8-0 run and just like that it was a 35 point lead at 53-18. With 18:39 seconds left in the half the victory cigar was lit up.

The final margin of victory was 38 points and that is the worst spanking that I can ever remember the Lakers receiving. You would have to go back to 1979 through 1981 seasons to find losses of that magnitude. I'm sure the Oswego players have a short memory though and this one will be forgotten in due time. They have too much talent to dwell on this one and will come out firing on all cylinders in their next outing. The problem is their next outing is on the road against Brockport and after the Golden Eagles let one slip away to Buff State they will be out for blood.

Mikey McElroy led the way for Oneonta and was the game's leading scorer with 16 points along with 6 rebounds and a pair of assists. Jackson Zuvic had 15 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds. Lawrence Coleman had 12 points and 8 rebounds.

Jack Dignan was the rebounding leader with 10 boards and managed a double-double with 10 points as well. He just missed a triple-double by dishing out 9 assists. He was almost perfect with his shotmaking as he was 3x3 from the field, 1x1 from 3 point land, and 3x4 from the line. He also had 2 steals and a block. Pretty solid night for Mr. D.

Seth Thomsen rounded out the starting 5 with 6 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds. Ian Shupp's 8 points were the most off the bench, which did result in 31 points for Oneonta.

Oneonta shot 58.9% from the field (33x56 and 50% from long range (10x20). They were 66.6% from the line (14x21).  The Lakers had their troubles, shooting only 29.6% from the field (16x54), 20% from long distance (3x15) and 60.7% (17x28) from the line.

Oneonta also won the battle off the glass by a 40 to 29 margin. Both teams took decent care of the ball as the Lakers committed only 7 turnovers and Oneonta had 8.

Oswego's only player in double figures was Walter Sampson with 10 points. Brain Sortino had 9, while Dustin Pond and Keith Tyson both had 8.

Oswego falls to 8-2  (1-2) an will be off until they meet Brockport on January 12th  at 7:30.

Oneonta improves to 7-3 (2-1) and will face two huge games this weekend when they head west to take on Geneseo on Friday night at 7:30 PM and then Brockport on Saturday at 4 PM.

It appears to me the SUNYAC's is going to be alot closer race than first expected. From the posts I read earlier it looked like a 3 or 4 team horse race but with the first games of the new year some surprises(or are they?).  I wouldn't say there are any teams," that are a night off." It appears the conference is competitive from top to bottom. Agreed???

January 5th  Fredonia State 89  Geneseo State 86

If Geneseo misses out as the top seed in the SUNYAC tournament, this game will probably be the reason why. This was a shocker from start to finish and I'm still left asking a a lot of questions as to how this happened. One thing is for certain...the old adage about the SUNYAC conference that there is no easy games and anybody can beat you was sure put on display with this game on Tuesday. I had this game as an 88-66 Geneseo win but then so didn't everyone who looked at this matchup. I was only 1 point off the winner's total with my 88 and I had the 6 in the loser's total. That has to be worth something. My crystal ball was cloudy and I had trouble reading through the mistiness, but it was apparently trying to give me a hint.

Fredonia was the team that came out of the gate in a hurry and 3 and a half minutes into the game they had a 16-5 double digit lead. The Geneseo coaching staff had already used two 30 second time outs and the 2nd one of those did help because 4 minutes later the Knights had a 19-18 lead when Justin Ringen scored inside.
6 ties and 5 lead changes would take place from that point until the end of the half and when the buzzer sounded it was the Blue Devils that were on top by a 43-41 margin on a 3 pointer by Richard Delacruz.

It was the Blue Knights, however, that seized the momentum as the 2nd half got under way. Ringen opened with another layup and Kevin Crockett buried a before and after pair of 3 pointers, around a layup by  Fredonia's Brandon Hodge. The Blue Devils fought back with a basket and a pair of free throws from Ian Helps, but Nick Fessenden and Charlie Zaepfel took turns making layups....first Fessenden then Zaepfel, then Fessenden, then Zaepfel all over again. A short time later the Knights got 2 more baskets in succession when Crockett and Zaepfel hit back to back jumpers. The score was now 61-51 and it was the Knight that now had the double digit lead with 14:29 left to play. Finally order was being restored, there was no new world order, and all was as it should be. The Knights were simply and finally going about their business as they should have earlier in the game.

Or so it would seem. Usually at this stage of the game the Blue Devils would slowly fold up the tents, pack their bags and amble off to that 15 to 20 point loss, like they have in most of their games this year. But this time they didn't go away quietly into the night. They didn't go away noisily into the night either, they didn't go away at all. In fact they came back from that 10 point deficit and slowly whittled it down to a single possession  at 69-66, with 8:50 to go on a  Matt Cieslik 3 pointer, his 2nd in a row. The Knight's John Decker responded with a 3 pointer of his own but Justin Tapper and Tyler Roberts scored on consecutive trips down the floor. When the Knights missed the front end of a 1&1 the Blue Devils rebounded and Tapper hit a 3 pointer to give the Blue Devils the lead at 73-72. They never looked back. Ashort game of free throw shooting took place and the Blue Devils went 4 of 4 to the Knight 3 of 4. Then Helps and Tapper made layups on successive trips and Geneseo went scoreless. The lead was 81-75, with 4 minutes to go, and for every move the Knights had the Blue Devils had a reply. The Knights got it to a single possession game with 33 seconds left at 88-86. They had to foul and Fredonia's Roberts made 1 of 2 leaving the door slighty ajar with 18 ticks left. Needing a triple, they put the ball in Ringens hands, but unlike the Nazareth game when he buried the three to beat the buzzer and win it for the Knights, this time it didn't go down and the Blue Devils were victorious.

Ian Helps was  the game's high scorer and rebounder with 25 points and 13 boards for an outstanding double double and a leading candidate for the SUNYAC Player of the Week award. Helps also had 7 assists and 2 blocks.

Dante Williams had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Justin Tapper had 11 points and 4 rebounds while Matt Cieslik had 10 points.

Justin Ringen led the Knights with 23 points. and John Decker had 21.

After watching the last few minutes of the Fred-Gen game online, Pep feels a bit better about his Saxons' loss at Fred State earlier this season. The Blue Devils have some athletes and can pull it altogether as they did against Geneseo. They pretty much did the same against AU.

Pep is also happy that the Saxons are back in the win column (80-74 over Utica in their Empire 8 opener) after a four-game slide against some heretofore unknown competition (losses to Albright and Johns Hopkins in PA after Christmas). AU's win over Utica was the first game played at the Galanis Family Arena since a Nov. 13 opener almost two months ago! Saxons will certainly be tested Friday night when they host a hot Naz team that shot the lights out in beating Ithaca 95-60 at Ben (Lights Out) Gym. On Saturday, AU hosts the same Bombers (7-3) who handed Tom Spanbauer's (one-time AU coach) Cortland Red Dragons their lone loss of the season.

On Saxon Warriors!
On Saxon Warriors! On to Victory!
...Fight, fight for Alfred, A-L-F, R-E-D!

My man Pep.  When Pep is happy we all are happy because he's nothing but good karma. And I must admit, on those E8 football boards, Pep and Pg04 are a breath of fresh air ( there are some tough hombres over there :o )

All-Time

I think it's a 4 team race.
Its clear to me who those teams are in no particular order.
Oneonta
Plattsburgh
Buffalo State
Brockport
All these teams are Deep and Athletic, on any given night there are 4 or 5 guys that can score 20 points or more.
One of these team will certainly win the Conference.

I think Geneseo, Cortland or Oswego round out the 6 teams that make the playoffs.

Dave 'd-mac' McHugh

I think that assessment underrates Oswego a great deal. I know they are currently 1-2 after a bad loss to Oneonta, but do you really think the Lakers are just going to pack their bags and stay home? I highly doubt it.

Elmhurst lost by 20 to Benedictine... by your measure they shouldn't have been in the game against Augustana (that isn't a knock on Benedictine who is a very good team, but not better than Augustana). Yet, Elmhurst beat Augustana last night.

There is a lot of basketball to be played in what is always a see-saw, night-in/night-out SUNYAC especially since we haven't come close to the second round of conference games.

I just don't think they are as talented, deep or athletic as some of the other teams I have seen this year.
It's very tough to win the conference 2 years in a row. I think they lost some of their swagger.
Maybe it was too much time off in between games, but they looked dis-interested against Oneonta the other night.

dcahill44

Oswego is way better than there performance showed as they are really banged up and Sortino was sick tuesday night against Oneonta but the Lakers will be in contention once again in the SUNYAC. I think its a 7 team race. I wouldnt be surprised if any of the 7 besides New Paltz, Fredonia and Potsdam win the regular season and/or conference tournament. Brockport/Oswego next tuesday is a huge game for Oswego especially but Bport as well.
