It appears to me the SUNYAC's is going to be alot closer race than first expected. From the posts I read earlier it looked like a 3 or 4 team horse race but with the first games of the new year some surprises(or are they?).  I wouldn't say there are any teams," that are a night off." It appears the conference is competitive from top to bottom. Agreed???

AGREED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saxons snap four-game skid....here's some +K for ya, Bengalsrule, because Pep's in a good mood despite fighting a cold.

My man Pep.  When Pep is happy we all are happy because he's nothing but good karma. And I must admit, on those E8 football boards, Pep and Pg04 are a breath of fresh air ( there are some tough hombres over there :o )

It's a jungle over there  ;D ;D ;D

Friday ]anuary  8th

Four games on tap today in the 1st big weekend of 2016 and 2nd big weekend of the SUNYAC season. Also Geneseo and Brockport get to play their first back to back conference games having missed the December weekend. Here we go.

New Paltz State  at  Brockport State        7:30 PM

The Golden Eagles are not happy that they let one slip away on Tuesday when the Buffalo State Bengals came from behind and got the W in Brockport. Coach Dunne will make sure that doesn't happen tonight against the Hawks. Brockport owns an 8-2 record in this series over the past 10 games but the Hawks have managed to get 1 of those 2 wins last year. Both teams have a lot of the same personnel back.

Brockport has dropped 2 games in a row and will be looking to start a new winning streak. The Hawks are just looking for a win. Losers of 8 in a row since their season opening win against Vassar, New Paltz has dropped 5 straight games by double digit margins. The oddsmakers say more of the same is in their immediate future as they are a 15 point underdog. I think that Brockport will win by a bigger margin. Golden Eagles take this one by an 83-64 final

Oneonta State  at  Geneseo State         7:30 PM Featured Game of the Day

Oneonta's dismantling of Oswego on Tuesday night was as surprising as Geneseo falling to Fredonia. Hard to say which one sent bigger shock waves through the SUNYAC community. The Blue Knights didn't count on heading into this weekend with a 0-1 record in the YAC.

Oneonta hasn't won a game on this road trip to western NY in 6 years. That was the last time the Red Dragons went dancing. Since then it's been 0-2 every weekend. Both Brockport and Geneseo have playoff caliber teams this year but so do the Red Dragons. The first rule toward making those playoffs is to protect your home court. Geneseo has already broken that rule and I don't think they can afford to do so in back to back games. The defeat by Fredonia was the first loss the Knights had against an NCAA Division III team. I think it was an aberration and tonight they get back to the basics of holding home court. It should be an exciting game as the point spread favors the home team by a slim 2 points. I see the Knights winning by a small margin as well and overtime could be in the picture.  Geneseo 86 Oneonta 81

Buffalo State  at  Potsdam State        7:30 PM

The Bengals are flying high after extending their winning streak to 5 games Tuesday night and are looking to match their longest streak of the 2014-15 campaign when they won 6 in a row from January 13th through January 24th. The Bears are looking for just their 2nd win of the season. Hard to figure an upset here as the Bears have lost 7 of their 8 games by substantial margins. The oddsmakers have them listed as a 20 point home dog and the Bengals high powered attack and in your face defense could steamroll this young team by a bigger margin than that. The Bengals could fall victim to the classic trap game, with major rival Plattsburgh State on tap for tomorrow, in what could have a major factor on tournament seedings down the road.

Somehow I don't think the Bengals coaching staff will allow that to happen. I seem to recall a certain Bengals backer telling me that in Bengal land the next game is the only one that matters. Buffalo State is 14-0 against Potsdam over the past 8 years, which is the most one sided match up in the YAC. Tonight it becomes 15-0 as the Bengals win this one by an 85-61 final score.

Fredonia State  at  Plattsburgh State        7:30 PM

The Cardinals are hoping to be at full strength tonight as they await medical clearance to get their leading scorer and the 6th leading rebounder in all of Division III, Kyle Richardson, back in the lineup. Richardson missed the last game, a Cardinal win over Trinity College, but the young guns on the Cardinal bench stepped up and provided the firepower needed to pick up the slack. Plattsburgh will be looking for their 4th win in a row which would be their longest streak of the season. The Cards lead this series 8-2 over the past 5 years and the Blue Devils haven't beaten the Cardinals since January of 2012.

Fredonia got their biggest win in probably 3 years on Tuesday night and the confidence that comes from beating a team as good as Geneseo will go a long way in helping this young team become better and better. Someone else will fall victim to the Blue Devils this year, I hope it isn't my Cardinals tonight, looking past them to the Buff State matchup tomorrow.

The oddsmakers have made Plattsburgh a solid 20 point favorite. I think that it may be a little closer. Final score...Cardinals 81-63.

Bengalsrule - READ UP!

We are back to our normal Sunday and Thursday Hoopsville shows tonight! Now that we are getting back into our routine, we get back into the habit of featuring the East, Mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes, and West Regions on Thursday night shows (Northeast, Atlantic, Central, and South Regions on Sunday nights). Tonight, Dave McHugh talks with coaches who are succeeding so far this season thanks to a bit of a youth movement. How those squads are either exceeding early expectations or reloading pretty nicely. Dave also gets an assist from Pat Coleman to help cover the much anticipated men's basketball game between No. 1 Augustana at No. 5 Elmhurst which needed overtime to be decided. And Dave talks about the latest Hoopsville partner - the WBCA. With the WBCA coming onboard with the NABC there needed to be some branding changes. You will hear the change almost immediately.

Watch Hoopsville tonight at 7pm ET: www.d3hoops.com/hoopsville/archives/2015-16/jan7 - a show that had to be pre-recorded tonight due to other commitments.

I'm on it Dave.  Plus many of the Buff State team/family will be tuned in on their ipads/laptops while traveling to Plattsburgh via UNO Chicago Grill in New Hartford. Grand tours bus has great wifi ( from what I've been told) and the Buff State SID ( great guy named Jeff) really blew up Coach Ansari's appearance on the school website!!!

I'm in Albany Ny getting ready for a wake ( gonna miss my Bengals this weekend). Heading to wake now so I can tune in at 7 ( my Laquinta hotel has great wifi  :D)!

Go HOOPSVILLE!

Go BENGALS!

Couple of items:

- Happy to have him on... I have a feeling I might tap into the SUNYAC a few times (as much as I try and be diversified with conferences) because of how crazy it looks like it will be the rest of the season.
- Always thrilled when an SID puts something on their website along with Twitter. It obviously helps drive up numbers and awareness of the show, but it shows me the SID, coach, and/or department respects what we do and feels it is important. Some just help organize the interview and move on... others just ignore us.
- Sorry for the delay getting the video posted. A editing mistake had to be fixed late in the afternoon, but we were still going to make the 7pm deadline... only for there be a random hangup with the upload to YouTube (I think a second browser from a second computer checking in on the progress and editing the text caused a hangup) delay things.
- I actually know the UNO Chicago Grill in New Hartford you are speaking of!!! My grandparents lived in New Hartford since moving from New York City when my mother was a very, very young girl (the house was built, I believe, by my great grandfather). My aunt and uncle still live in Remsen (per the comment about traveling along Route 8 and Route 365 on the return trip - their property line butts up to Rt. 365 near Hinckley Lake), so I still get back there once in awhile (this past summer for my cousin's wedding). I haven't eaten at that particular restaurant, but I know exactly where it is!

January 5th   Buffalo State 81 Brockport State 73

Quite an exciting game the other night in Brockport. As a fan it was a great game to watch. Both teams played hard and either team could have walked of the floor with a W. I had the Bengals  winning this one in a barnburner by an 82-80 score. It was a barnburner and I only missed Buff State's score by a single point. If Port had made their free throws I coulda been closer on their end as well.

The Bengals trailed in this game from the opening tip as Brockport jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead thanks to a pair of long range bombs by Pat Modzelewski. The Bengals would close to within a point at 13-12 on a Lovell Smith jumper and a pair of Redell Freeman free throws with 10:23 left in the half. That would set the pattern for this game over the next 27 minutes of play as the Golden Eagles would maintain a lead of up to 9 points. The Bengals would respond every time and close to within a single possession but could never get over the hump and claim a lead. Toward the end of the half Buffalo State went from down 8, to down 4, to down 9 at 36-27 with less then a minute to play. Freeman scored on a drive to the hoop with 3 seconds left to cut the lead to 7 at the half, 36-29 in favor of the Golden Eagles.

The 2nd half didn't see much change. The Bengals got a pair of fee throws from Smith to narrow the lead once more, but back to back layups by Olusola Adeniran and Modzelewski matched Brockport's largest lead of the game at 9 points. Back came the Bengals and Nico McLean's 2 free throws with 16:17 on the clock cut it down to a single possession at 42-39.

Brockport failed to pull away and the Bengals couldn't gain a lead. This continued to play out over the next 10 minutes when the Bengals got a boost from Mike Henry. Down 65-61, Henry scored on a layup to cut it to 2 and after the Golden Eagles missed a layup on their end, Henry came down and scored inside once again to create the first tie score of the game at 65 apiece with 4:34 on the clock. Brockport missed a jumper but Levi Pace grabbed the offensive rebound and scored to give the Eagles the lead. Back came Henry 12 seconds later  to score inside again and tie it up. Henry followed that up with a steal and was fouled going to the basket. he made the first free throw and the Bengals had their first lead of the evening at 68-67 and their was 3:34 left to play.

Now each possession was critical and both teams missed opportunities on their 2 trips down the floor. Each team missed a shot and had a turnover. Then Pace scored to put Brockport back in front by a point, but once more Mike Henry, rose to the occasion and hit a jumper to give the Bengals the lead for the 2nd time. It would be a lead they would hold onto until the final buzzer. It was the 9th straight point that Henry had scored for the Bengals as he brought them from a 4 point deficit to the only 2 leads they had all night.

Brockport needing to keep pace with Buff State missed a layup and the Bengals big man Jordan Chateau scored inside (chateau means house and this guy is as big as a house) to increase the lead to 3 points with 1:18 left. Brockport needed to score and when they came up empty on a 3 point attempt, that set the stage for Jordan Glover to put his free throw shooting prowess on display. Five times Brockport put him on the line and Jordan responded by canning 9 of 10. This one was in the books and Buffalo State made a statement that maybe, just maybe, the road to the SUNYAC crown may go through the Queen City this year. This coming weekend will prove interesting.

Mike Henry was the MVP of this game as his double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds were game highs in both categories. His 9 straight points in crunch time were the most pivotal points in the game as well. He also had 3 assist and 3 steals.

Lovell Smith with 14 points and 5 rebounds along with Jordan Glover who also had 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals, also came up big for the Bengals. Jordan Chateau had 9 points and 5 rebounds. Redell Freeman had 8 points and was perfect shooting the rock, as he was 3x3 from the field, and 2x2 from the line. Nico McLean didn't score his usual amount but has 4 assists, 2 steal and 2 rebounds to go with his 4 points.

Statistically this game was fairly even as both teams had similar shooting percentages from the field and from long distance. The Bengal had a sizable edge from the line making 26 of 35 free throws (74.3%) to 13x24 for Brockport (54.2%). The 10 free throws that Jordan Glover had in the final 52 seconds, when Brockport was forced to foul, account for the discrepancy in numbers. The 5 missed free throws that Brockport had from the 8 minute mark to the point that Buffalo State tied the game up were one of the biggest factors that enabled the Bengals to come away with the win here.

Both teams committed a large number of turnovers...19 for the Bengals and 18 for the Golden Eagles, typical of the styles of defense that both teams play. Brockport had a slight edge on the boards of 40 to 38.

Brockport had 3 players in double figures with Clifton Lylerly leading the way in both points and rebounds. He had 19 points and just missed his double-double with 9 rebounds.  Patrick Modzelewski had 13 points and 7 rebounds, while Levi Pace came off the bench with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Matthew Smith had 7 points, 8 assists and 3 rebounds. Hamed Shamseldin scored 9 points, 2 assists and 2 steals, while    Devonn Gavin had 8 points and 2 rebounds off the bench.

Brockport now 5-3 (0-1) with a 2 game losing streak will look to get back on track when they host New Paltz and Oneonta this coming weekend.

Buffalo State improves to 8-2 overall (2-1) and will now make the long busride to the top of the state to visit the North Country. They will meet Potsdam on Friday night and then take on Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon in the featured SUNYAC game of the Day. There will be a live video feed by one of the top companies out there and live stats as well. Here are links to receive the broadcast or get the live stats:

Any idea of the quality of Potsdam live feed?  This will be my first time watching the Benals online in quite a while.  Any cost for viewing ?

P.s.  Mike Henry is my dark horse for Sunyac Player of the Year.   :) No...make that Lovell Smith for POY.   :D Oh heck Nico McLean for POY.  ;D Damn never mind  :-\

Ps. Ps. Jordan Chateau " big house".  I hope that you told him that at shoot around today.  He would get a kick out of that!

Good to have our real first conference Friday!

I think Brockport should defeat New Paltz but you never know how a team running on emotion and gaining confidence may do. Not overlooking this one for sure. Of course it seems like tomorrow is the big night when the road partners switch opponents. But we shall see.

What makes you think I went to a Buffalo State shootaround today? Are you crazy? I wouldn't be seen dead with those guys much less standing on two feet.

There is no charge to view the Potsdam on line webcast, it is free.  I've had mixed results with their feed. Decent on some games but freeze ups on other occasions.

But you will have a GREAT feed for the Saturday afternoon game between the Bengals and Cardinals, if your schedule allows you to watch it. It even comes with announcers and a high quality video. You may even get instant replay.

I was just kidding you...I have already been to the Buff State shootaround at 9:30 this morning. Talked to a number of the guys and of course Coach Ansari and Coach Glover. I have to go back around 1:30 and pick up Chris who is making a food run that some other guy usually does but was a no show this weekend. Heard he had a good excuse though.

Watched the Hoopsville show last night and listened to Coach Ansari tell the viewers about the state of the SUNYAC. Heard a sidebar about the time the bus driver got lost in Oneonta and got the bus stuck in the mud/snow. No magicman down there to call and bail your rears out....always the one good thing about coming up North...you know who you can count on. :D ;D 8-)

I will tell Jordan Chateau I've given him a new nickname...Big House...when I return to the hotel with lunch later today.

Lovell Smith, Mike Henry, Nico McLean, 3 excellent choices and if your Bengals win the conference crown there's a good chance once of them may get that award. You know that my money is on Kyle Richardson. The odds are a bit longer on him because the Cardinals aren't as heavily favored as some of the other teams, such as Buffalo State, but that just means the payout will big bigger if and when Kyle and the Cards do collect the Grand Prize ;).

I miss your face...wish you were here.

Is that the reason Buffalo State hasn't won at Dewar Arena in Oneonta the last 3 years.
The bus getting lost and getting caught in the Mud and Snow. LOL  ;D
In fact I think the Red Dragons knocked them out of the playoffs all 3 years by losing there.
Yes, they needed the Magic Wand to help them.

Last years loss at Oneonta didn't knock the Bengals out of the playoffs as they were the 5th seed but it did keep them from hosting a first round game which ultimately led them to exit after losing that game to Brockport.

Two years go the 83-82 loss to the Red Dragons in Oneonta DID knock them out of the playoffs and I remember telling Bengalsrule, at the time, that the Oneonta game would determine whether or not the Bengals played in the post season.

Three years ago the loss at Oneonta only added insult to injury. Had the Bengals won that game they would have tied New Paltz for the final playoff spot. The two teams split the regular season games but the Hawks won the tiebreaker when they had a win against top seed Cortland and the Bengals did not.

One cannot overlook the fact however, that regardless of how good the Bengals were, or how down the Red Dragons program may have been for a few years, Buffalo State has lost every game in Oneonta for the past 9 years except for 1 game on December 2nd, 2011.

Sounds like Buff should go to Oneonta asked for the post game pizza to be ordered right away, grab some popcorn, drink a Coke (get an extra for the return trip) and leave as soon as the pizza arrives!

Great show. First time my wife ever listened ( she had too because I turned the sound off on the tv in our hotel room).  It's interesting listening to coach Fajri who is extremely humble .  Keep up the good work.

Ps where can I buy one of those D3 shirts?

What shirts are you referring to?

On the show your blue shirt had "D3" over the right chest. Wondering if those shirts were for sale?
