Brockport trying hard to repeat their magic moment of a week ago. Now only down 80-74 with 51 seconds left.

I think it's too little too late though.

Plattsburgh State 83  Potsdam State 71

The Cardinals were extremely happy to walk off Jerry Welsh Court with a W after the exhibition they put on in the first half. Favored by 24 points the Cards were down by 12 at the break. Maybe the oddsmakers were looking into a cloudy crystal ball when they set the point spread for the game. The Cards were 24 points better than the Bears, but it was only in the 2nd half that they had that margin, outscoring Potsdam by a whopping 47-23 score in that period.

Potsdam opened up with a 5-0 lead on a 3 point basket by Joe Estramonte, and a deuce by Tyrone Adeyeye. Plattsburgh got on the board on a pair of layups by Zack Coleman and Kyle Richardson, but the Bears kept increasing their lead and another 3 pointer by Estramonte, put them up by a 16-7 margin, after nearly 7 minutes had gone by. The Cards responded with 3 straight baskets to cut the lead to 3 points, only to have the Bears build it right back up again. It looked like the Bears weren't going to go away and with just under 7 minutes left in the period the Potsdam's Nate Wyatt drained another 3 pointer to give them their largest lead so far of 10 points at 28-18.  Three times the Cards would score to cut it to single digits but each time the Bears had an answer and the 3rd time Estramonte drilled another triple to make it an 11 point lead.

Back came Plattsburgh with a pair of triples by Eli Bryant and Eddie Correa but again Potsdam countered with 3 point baskets from Dante Langley and Estramonte to up the lead back to 11 with 1:08 left to play in the half. Both teams came up empty in their next possessions and with 9 seconds left Estramonte was fouled taking a   3 pointer. He made all 3 free throws to give the Bears their largest lead of the night. Plattsburgh's Eli Bryant managed to drive and score right before the buzzer but the Bears still went into the half with their biggest lead of the season, 48-36.

I said at the half that Plattsburgh better come out firing on all cylinders or this would be the biggest upset in the YAC this year. What I should have said was... it would have been the biggest upset in Division 3 this year. Currently, according to the Massey Ratings, the 2 biggest upsets in Division III are #400 Newbury defeating #159 Connecticutt College 82-80 and #339 Lyndon State defeating #81 Wesleyan (Ct.) 80-78. Potsdam defeating Plattsburgh would have been #390 beating #19. Glad we don't have that distinction on our record.

So I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall to hear what was said at halftime by the Cardinals' coaching staff. Hopefully I'll get that story tomorrow. Whatever it was, it sure worked as Plattsburgh dominated on both ends of the court scoring 13 unanswered points to open the half and shutting down the 3 point shots that helped carry the Bears in the first half. Potsdam was held scoreless for the first 8 minutes of the period, as they missed their first 10 shots and were 0x6 from long distance. The Cardinals meanwhile were getting production from every person on the floor. The switch to a zone defense by Plattsburgh had a big effect on the offensive woes of the Bears.

A pair of free throws from Eddie Correa gave the Cardinals their first lead and completed that 13-0 run to make it 49-48 with 12:26 to go in the game. Estramonte came down and finally put the Bears on the board in the 2nd half with his 6th three pointer of the game. It regained the lead for Potsdam but it would be the last time they were in front. Kyle Richardson scored inside, Eli Bryant swished a three, and Jon Patron scored inside, on three successive trips down the floor to make it 57-51. Still up 61-55, Plattsburgh got 6 straight points from the X-Man as he got a steal and a dunk. Xavier then made 4 straight free throws (a season high I think) and the 12 point deficit was now a 12 point lead. The closest the Bears could get after that was 8 points with 2:43 to play but Correa ended any hope of a comeback by burying 2 long three pointers on back to back possessions and the lead reached 14 at 80-66, the largest of the game. The Potsdam coaching staff, wisely decided to forego the foul parade, that would usually take place in the final 90 seconds or so.

Plattsburgh only had 6 players hit the scoring column tonight but 5 of them recorded double digits and 2 of them Jon Patron and Kyle Richardson, had double-doubles. Patron led the Cards with 20 points and tied Richardson for game honors with 11 rebounds. Richardson had 14 points, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. Patron's double-double was the first one in his college career, after just missing one on 5 other occasions. For Richardson it was his 8th double-double this year.

Eddie Correa and Eli Bryant both scored 16 points and together had 5  three pointers, 3 for Eddie and 2 for Eli. Correa also had 4 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal and a block.

Xavier Thomas had 12 points, all in the 2nd half. he added 6 rebounds, 2 steals, an assist and a block.

It was a tale of two halves as the Bears outshot the Cards in all 3 areas in the first half, 42.8% (15x35) to 34.1% (14x41) from the field, 63.6% (7x11) to 15.3% (2x13) from 3 point land, and 84.6% (11x13) to 35.2% (6x17) from the line.

The Cardinals turned the tables in a big way in the 2nd half. They  were 51.7% (15x29) to 29.0% (9x31) from the field, 36.3% (4x11) to 20.0% (3x15) from long range and 81.2% (13x16) to 66.6% (2x3) from the line.

The Cardinals outrebounded Potsdam by a 50-39 margin and had a season low 7 turnovers to 13 for the Bears.

Potsdam got a big effort from their smallest player as Joe Estramonte was the leading scorer for either team with 25 points. He was 6x13 from long distance but really was much better than that figure would suggest as he threw up a number of hurried shots near the end of the game to try and get the Bears back in it. And remember he did this against the best 3 point defense in the nation.  He also had 5 assists, 4 rebounds, a block and a steal.

Dante Langley had 13 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Josh Blagrove had 11 points and 3 boards. Sergine Kane had 10 points and led the team with 7 rebounds. Mitch Lamerson had 5 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal, while Tyrone Adeyeye, had 5 rebounds, 4 points, 3 assists and a block.

Plattsburgh improves to 12-2 overall and 7-0 in the conference. Their current 8 game winning streak is their longest one since the 2013-14 season when they also had an 8 game win streak. They will host Geneseo on Friday evening at 7:30 and then Brockport on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 PM to complete the first trip through their conference rivals. Geneseo was the team that ended their last 8 game winning streak on Feb.8th, 2014, when the Knights won in Geneseo  by a 60-51 score. This time it's  in Plattsburgh so maybe there will be a different outcome. The Cards will have to go some to catch their longest winning streak which occurred in the 2007-08 season when they reeled off 20 wins in a row. I hope we can get half way there by winning a pair this weekend.

Potsdam put up a valiant effort tonight and played the Cards tougher than most other teams in the conference have done. They may surprise a team or two yet this season. They are now 1-13 on the year (1-6) and will host the same 2 teams that Plattsburgh does this weekend in reverse order.

Impressive win for Oswego last night at Brockport.
Mykelle Kreck was the difference, 27 minutes, 12 points, 13 rebounds and 7 blocks.
He looked great.
Where has this guy been all season?
They looked like a the Championship team I saw last season with this guy on the floor.
Beware of Oswego, they found the piece to get them back on track.
The SUNYAC should be fun to watch the rest of the way.
Just when I thought I had it all figured out.
Can't wait for Friday nights games.

Oswego had a great win at Brockport last night hopefully they can get it going like they did last year. Surprised that Plattsburgh got down to Potsdam but I think it just shows how good the league really is anybody can beat anyone on any night. Fredonia taking Buff State to overtime, looks like Fredonia can beat anyone. They played an unbelievable nonconference schedule and they have some good wins. I saw Potsdam and Plattsburgh play live this weekend and was really impressed with Plattsburgh talent level , the way they defend and how hard they play. Potsdam is better than they have been as well.

I hope BenglesRule has something to say about this game and gets Buffalo State playing the kind of basketball they should be playing. I'm going to go out of a limb and take Buffalo State by double digits at home.

"Ugly win".  That's about all I have to say!  An overtime game that should have never gone to ot!  We gotta get better quickly or its gonna be a loooonnnnggg weekend! Friday vs Oneonta marks the end of the first half of the Sunyac season ( for Buff State). If you would have told me one month ago that I'd be hoping for a better than .500 Yac record at midsession, I would have told you to stop drinking!

Something tells me that my good friends may not be picking us to win Friday at Oneonta.   Sure hoping for a win ( a safe travels back to our hotel- 2010 we got stuck in Oneonta). Not too late to get back on track

I believe

Go BENGALS!!

If you say so, Dave. I was going to post that I hoped the Cardinals continued to be overlooked since I didn't want them to get the D3hoops jinx laid upon them. Thought for sure it was going to happen last night when the Cardinals played my Alma Mater, Potsdam. Down by 12 at the half, I was thinking the jinx strikes again. Fortunately the Cards were able to overcome the jinx...a good sign, but a tough weekend looms.

I guess it's good that Dave isn't influenced by the posters here. Just looks at the objective data. Although I would claim there is very little objective data. And a poll certainly isn't objective. What am I talking about?  ;D ??? ??? lol

All-Time,

Maybe you didn't start reading the board until the season actually started this year but this is part of a post I had put up back in early November.

Oswego State posted their roster and......the BIG surprise was the addition of forward Mykelle Krecko. Krecko could very well be the tallest player in the SUNYAC this season as he is a 6'10" 215 pound rebounding machine. Krecko played for Clinton Community College, here in Plattsburgh, 2 years ago and I was hoping he might transfer over to Plattsburgh State last year. Instead he went to DII Le Moyne College in Syracuse. Now he shows up on Oswego's roster. He appears in the team photo of Le Moyne's 2014-15 roster but his name has been deleted and he doesn't show up in their stat sheet from last year so I'm guessing he never played a minute for the Dolphins. (injury perhaps?) Oswego lists him as a junior so it would appear he has 2 years of eligibility left. At Clinton in 2013-14 Krecko averaged a double-double and the Clinton Cougars had one of the best years in school history. He routinely put up 15 to 20 points, with 15 to 20 rebounds and 4 to 8 blocks per game.

This is a write up from January 21, 2014 when he made the Athletes of the Week in the NJCAA Region III:

"Krecko led the Cougars to a 4-0 week averaging 22 points, 18 rebounds, 2 assists, and 6 blocks per game.  Over the weekend he helped lead the team to wins at #9 nationally ranked Mohawk Valley CC and Jefferson CC.  In the win at Mohawk Valley he scored 20 points on 10-11 shooting with 19 rebounds and 6 blocks.  He followed that against JCC with 20 points, 15 rebounds, and 8 blocks."

Where has this guy been all season?

Sitting in plain view on the Oswego State bench. :o

I watched a number of Laker games and I have been surprised to see that he has received very little playing time. I watched him in the Cazenovia game where he got 12 minutes of court time (mainly due to foul trouble on several of the starters, I believe) and he scored 9 points, grabbed 5 boards and had 3 blocks. He came into that game and the Lakers were only up 42-32 against a team they should have been blowing away. With Krecko now controlling the paint they went up by 20 in only 4 minutes. Saw him again in the Plattsburgh game when he came in and scored one minute after entering the game and 39 seconds later scored again and 1. He had 5 points and a rebound in 4 minutes and his 5 straight points were the only time the Oswego deficit got cut to single digits. Yet he spent the rest of the game on the bench. He did play 19 minutes the next day against Potsdam and only scored 2 points (only took 2 shots) but had 5 rebounds.

Last night against Brockport he nearly had a triple double. He had 12 points, 13 rebounds and 7 blocks. I also mentioned yesterday how Oswego seems to be missing the rebounding prowess of Rashawn Powell who was a senior last year. Well, in their victory over the Golden Eagles, the Lakers won the rebounding battle, just like they did last year with Powell, and Krecko is the reason they did. Perhaps Krecko is finally going to get his chance to prove himself. Personally I was hoping that he'd continue to languish on the Laker bench. You know what they say about waking sleeping giants. ;D

I kept wondering what was taking them so long to discover him. I still do. I don't know the answer and it's easy to speculate, but there could be a host of reasons why he hasn't seen as much playing time as I thought he would get. What's obvious is the coaching staff didn't think he was good enough to be playing in crunch time of big games....or he would have been in there. Somebody thought he was a decent player though, as he was recruited by DII Le Moyne out of JC.  We'll see this weekend if he continues to see more court time or languish on the bench. I would think it would be the former after his display against Brockport.

As you know I have been reading your posts for years.
I'm your biggest fan.
No question about it, you were the ONE that told all of us that Oswego got a big time transfer in Krecko.
I just got excited when I was watching the Oswego win over Brockport the other night. This kid can play and Oswego will definitely be a factor in the SUNYAC playoffs if this kid continues to play the way he played the other night.
I do apologize for not giving you A CALL OUT when I posted the other night.
It won't happen again ;D
