Magicman- Love your breakdown of the Plattsburgh Cardinals.
I definitely thought it would be somewhat of a rebuilding year for them.
They lost a lot to graduation last year.
But like you said there is nothing like Senior Leadership to get a team going.
Kyle Richardson has emerged into one of the best players if not the best player in the conference.
Crazy to think he came off the bench last year, that is the kind of talent that Plattsburgh had last year.
Edward Correa has been a solid player for years and Xavier Thomas's athleticism is unreal.

That and the emergence of Jon Patron, Eli Bryant along with Zach Coleman make this team a very solid group.
They all bring a little something to the court. And they play well together.

Fantastic to see that they are ranked 24th in the nation and another well deserved SUNYAC player of the week for Kyle Richardson.

The SUNYAC is one tough conference, enjoy your Magic Carpet Ride.

3 games tonight in the SUNYAC

Can New Paltz pull off another upset here?
I don't think so, Oneonta will find their swagger tonight at home. They desperately need a win before heading up to Plattsburgh on Friday. Oneonta by 15-20 points.

Cortland at Brockport- both teams need a win here. Brockport should be able to hold court and get the win in a very close game.

Definitely the game of the night:
Oswego at Geneseo
I think Oswego gets the win here tonight. They have been playing much better and Brian Sortino is getting the help he needs to get this team playing the kind of basketball they are accustomed to playing. Oswego by 8 points

Enjoy the Craziness of the SUNYAC

Tuesday February 2nd  Three games scheduled for this evening.

New Paltz State  at  Oneonta State      7:30 PM

The Hawks are coming off a big upset of Cortland, a team they lost to by 31 points the first time they played them. And they pulled another upset when they took out Buffalo State the week before the Cortland game. Can they do it again  and surprise the Red Dragons?

Oneonta needs this game to stop the bleeding. Back to back losses on the road last weekend have seen a reversal of fortune that was a bit unexpected. Now they are just one among the many instead of the sole possessor of 2nd place. They handled the Hawks with ease back on January 15th winning in Hawk Center by 23 points. The oddsmakers have made them a 15 point favorite tonight. That's close to what my crystal ball has forecast as well. Final score Oneonta 82 New Paltz 65.

Oswego State  at  Geneseo State      7:30 PM Featured Game of the Night

It would be a lot easier to pick this game if I knew how many minutes Mykelle Krecko was going to play in tonight's game. He went from 27 minutes and almost a triple double against Brockport to not playing a single minute the next game against Cortland. He gets 10 minutes off the bench against New Paltz and then starts and gets 27 minutes against Oneonta. Tonight might be his turn to not play at all again. The Lakers need a win here to continue their climb from the depths of the YAC. Winners of 4 out of their last 5 they have moved from 8th place up to a tie for 5th.

Geneseo has also made an abrupt turnaround after losing their first 2 conference games. They reeled off 5 straight wins before suffering a loss at Plattsburgh. They have put that one behind them, though with a pair of winning barnburners against Cortland and Brockport. All alone in 2nd place is a nice feeling and they would like to keep it that way.

The point spread favors the Lakers by a single point so the game is basically a pick 'em. I think I would go with the Knights even if I knew that Oswego's 6'10' big guy was starting. He can be a game changer but so can't the Knight's one two punch of Justin Ringen and John Decker. Ringen didn't have a good outing his last game against Brockport. I think he makes up for it tonight. Geneseo takes this one by a 76-72 final score.

Cortland  at  Brockport      7:30 PM

This game could just as easily be the featured game of the week. It will be another hard fought game that should come down to the final minutes. Brockport could be missing their leading scorer Hamed Shamseldin who has been nursing an injury for the past several games. He was limited to just 13 minutes against Plattsburgh and tried to go against Geneseo but only played 13 minutes in that game as well.

Both teams are coming off losses and the oddsmakers have made the home team Eagles a slim 2 point favorite. Last year the schools split the season series with each team winning at home. Over the past 10 games they are dead even at 5-5. Tonight I'll take the home team but if Shamseldin doesn't play Brockport could be in trouble. Brockport wins by a 73-70 final.

magicman

Geneseo leads Oswego by a 40-35 score at the half.

John Decker with 15 points and Justin Ringen with 10 to lead the Knights. They have 6 3's between them and the nights had 7 three pointers in the half.

Brian Sortino with 12 points and Alex Rawa with 9 to lead the Lakers. Oswego with 5  three pointers in the half.

Brockport 41, Cortland 36 midway in a game of runs. Port out to early lead. Corts forge 30-19 gap just under eight minutes. Eagles go on 16-0 tear.  Not a particularly T. Spanbauer Cortland squad on defense. Quite porous, and ballhandling quite tenuous this evening. Port pressure taking a toll. Ten Eagles score led by D. Gavin 9 points, L. Pace 8. B. Estarfaa 13 for RDragons, JP Reagan 10. They are 5x9 3s but basically blanked after Cortland spurt.

Bport 57 percent from the field ....16x28. Teams lick their lips when facing Cortland!!

Shamseldin not playing

magicman

Oneonta out in front of New Paltz 37-28 at the break.

Lawrence Coleman with 11 points for Oneonta. Mikey McElroy has 8 and Seth Thomsen has 7'

Brandon Guest has 7 points to lead the Hawks.

I'm trying to watch all 3 games but am concentrating more on the Geneseo-Oswego game. Saw the part of this game where the Red Dragons opened up some daylight and left to go back to the Geneseo game. Had to look 3 times at the halftime score when I went back to check the action. A little shocked especially with no Shamseldin.

Brockport 86, Cortland 73, final

Eagles swift start the second half  for 50-37 lead and up shooting percentage to 60 percent from the field. Corts actually come back and take leads of 62-61 and 64-63 on JP Reagan hoop at 9:08. C. Lyerly gets the reversal at 8:48. P. Modzelewski and M. Smith treys stretch the lead. RDragons within 75-68 before dashed by D. Gavin triple. Gavin finishes with 16 pts(4x8fg, 2x5 3s); Lyerly 15 pts(7x14fg) 10 rebs, 5 assts; C. Torres 12 pts(5x7fg); L. Pace 12 pts(5x7fg); M. Smith 10 pts. As we stated, Eagles with 10 dribblers in the scoring column in the first half.

Need a program to follow Cortland ....D. Hampton emerges to start the second half and nets seven rather quick points. Later, frosh J. Lobello appears and plays a good deal of the final period, probably for some steadier ballhandling. B. Estarfaa after 13 early first half points winds up with 16(5x13fg, 4x10 3s). Reagan 15 pts(6x9fg, 3x5 3s); TJ Hefele 14 pts(5x9fg, 4x6 3s).

Port pulls a 32x60fg trigger, 7x21 3s, 15x16ft ....Cortland 25x59, 15x32 3s. Dragons with 17-0 run for 30-19 lead before hosts go on 16-0 rampage and seizing 41-36 halftime advantage

Geneseo wins a close one 80-79 over Oswego.

The Knights should get some kind of award for playing in the most barnburners for a season. Already this year they have played in 10 games that have been decided by 4 points or less. Their record in those games is 8-2. I think I have seen about 5 of those games.

I knew tonight's game was going to be another close one and these teams didn't disappoint.  I had the Knights winning by a 76-72 final score so I wasn't too far off from the actual finish.

The teams combined for 10 ties and 16 lead changes and the largest lead of the game was 8 points by Geneseo early in the 2nd half at 50-42. That lead lasted for all of 14 seconds before Oswego's Kyle Covely buried a 3 ball to cut it to 5. On Oswego's next possession Covely scored again to narrow the gap to 3 points. The Knights' Justin Ringen answered with a jumper of his own but Covely hit another triple to make it 52-50.
After the Knights came up empty, the Lakers tied the game on a Mark Candelario layup and when Geneseo missed again, the Lakers' Alex Rawa hit one of his 6 three pointers to give Oswego the lead and that 8 point deficit was now a 3 point lead and it happened in a shade under 3 minutes. Back and forth they went with neither team gaining more than a 2 possession lead.

At the 5 minute mark Oswego was up 72-69 and after an Oswego turnover, Geneseo's  Justin Ringen came down and buried one of his 4  three pointers on the night to tie the game once again. Oswego went in front on a pair of Brian Sortino free throws. The Knights' John Decker scored inside to tie it up at 74. Demetrius Mitchell made a 3-pt. jump shot for the Lakers and Decker answered with a 2 point jumper. After Oswego missed on their end the Knights' Kevin Crockett put Geneseo back on top 78-77 with a pair of free throws and there was 1:25 left to play. Oswego committed a turnover with 1:11 to play, but the Knights failed to capitalize when they missed a shot, got the offensive rebound and returned the favor by turning it over with 41 seconds to go. Sortino made them pay when he buried a jumper with 19 seconds left to put the Lakers in front 79-78. Needing a stop the Lakers didn't get it as Kevin Crockett played the hero when he scored on a layup with 3 seconds left in the game. Once again the Knights scored in the final 5 seconds of the game to grab the win.

The J & J boys once  again were the main source of power for the Knights. John Decker led Geneseo with 24 points and Justin Ringen was close behind with 20. Decker added 5 assists, 3 rebounds and was 5 for 7 from downtown. Ringen had 7 rebounds, 2 assists and hit 4 of 9 from long distance.

Jordi Menkhorst  also had double figures as he added 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists. He did a good job against the big men of Oswego tonight.

6'6" freshman, Jack Manke, who hails from near my neck of the woods up here in the North Country and went to school at Ogdensburg, came off the bench and had 14 solid minutes for the Knights. He had 8 points with 5 rebounds, going 3x4 from the field and 2x3 from the line. He'll be a valuable member of the Knights over the next 3 years. Wish we had him at Plattsburgh.

The hero of the night Kevin Crockett, only scored 4 points, but they just happened to be the final 4 points that Geneseo scored. Nothing like choosing quailty over quantity. I think the real reason he was so successful in crunch time was he wanted to have bragging rights over his brother Matt, who is a junior guard for the Oswego Lakers. Matt had 3 points in tonight's game and with 1:26 left to play Kevin didn't have any points. So when he was fouled with 1:25 remaining he calmly swished both free throws to put the Knights in front. And of course his basket with 3 seconds left was the game-winner. He can trash talk Matt, at least for the next 2 weeks, until they meet in Oswego on the 16th.

Need to give a shout out to Jon Cohen who only saw 3 minutes of action but had 2 assists and a steal, including the assist on the winning basket by Crockett.

Geneseo had a decent night shooting the rock as they went 28X58 from the field (48.3%), 13X23 from downtown (56.5%) and 11x14 from the line (78.6%)

Oswego shot well also, as they were 30x60 from the field (50.0%), 15-36 from long range (41.7%), and 4-8 from the line (50.0%)

Another indication of how close this game was and I had to highlight this section...both teams had 32 rebounds. Each team had 13 offensive boards and 19 on the defensive end. The turnover battle was dead even as well, with 9 apiece, being the magic number, which is not too shabby. Bench points turned out to be another dead heat as the reserves on each team scored 19 points. Last but not least, Geneseo had 19 assists and Oswego had...you guessed it 19 assists.

Brian Sortino captured scoring honors for the night by hitting the nets for 26 points (10x16 fg, 2x6 3's, 4x6ft) He had 6 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and a block.

Alex Rawa had 18 points as he scored them all by hitting 6 of 12 shots from long distance. He was the biggest reason that the Lakers had 15 3's tonight. He also had 4 assists, 2 rebounds and a block.

Demetrius Mitchell added 12 points and Kyle Covely had 10. Keith Tyson had 5 assists, 4 points and 4 rebounds.

The Lakers big man Mykell Krecko started the game tonight but only got 12 minutes of court time. He had 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and scored 2 points with the only shot he took.

Geneseo improved to 14-4 overall and 8-3 in the conference to remain all alone in 2nd place and within striking distance of the 1st place Cardinals. They will return to action  on Friday night at 7:30 as they only have a single game this weekend against travel partner Brockport.

Oswego falls to 12-6 overall and 5-6 in the YAC. They fall out of a favored playoff spot into 7th place and this weekend will host Fredonia State on Friday, a team that is a half game behind them in the standings. On Saturday they host Buffalo State, the team that is a half game ahead of them in the standings. The ramifications of that game are huge since Buffalo State won their earlier matchup. If the Bengals also win this game they will hold a very, very, important tiebreaker that could determine the 6th and final playoff position.

Oneonta defeats New Paltz by an 81-59 final score.

A much needed win for these Red Dragons as they take care of business against the Hawks. I had the home team winning this by an 82-65 final score so I didn't miss the actual score by much. Needed Tyler Levin to make both of his free throws at the end instead of going 1 for 2. I'll be speaking to him about this when he visits Plattsburgh this Friday. :o And if the Hawks had made their last 2 three pointers I'da been perfect.

The way that New Paltz came out of the gate made it look like another big upset was a possibility. The Hawks matched Oneonta shot for shot during the initial 10 minutes of the game and when Dylan Balducci hit a 3 pointer with 9:13 left in the half, the Hawks were in front 22-20. Balducci was fouled on the Hawks next trip down the court and he made 1 of 2 to give them a 3 point lead. It would be their last lead, as the Red Dragons went on a 15-2 run, that had them in front 35-25 with 2:36 left in the period. Oneonta got 6 points from Lawrence Coleman, 5 from Seth Thomsen and 4 from Mikey McElroy to account for those 15 points. The Red Dragons went into the locker room up 37-28 at the break and the Hawks were never able to make a run that would turn this into a ballgame.

They did stay within shouting distance for the early stages of the 2nd half and they fought back from a 10 point deficit with 6-1 mini-run to make the score 45-40 with 15:15 remaining. That was their last effort to keep it reasonably close. Oneonta responded with a 10-0 run of their own and it was 55-40 in a flash. Six of those ten points came on back to back trifectas by Ian Schupp, 21 seconds apart. Shots like that, in succession, have a way of turning a game in a hurry. The lead kept growing and the Red Dragons were never threatened, from that point on.

Lawrence Coleman led a quartet of Oneonta players in double figures. He had a game high 21 points with 5 rebounds. Seth Thomsen had 12 points with 3 rebounds and a pair of steals. Mikey McElroy and Ian Schupp both had 11 points. McElroy added 3 blocks, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Jackson Zuvic led the team in rebounding with 7 boards along with 8 points and 2 assists. Jack Dignan had 8 assists, 4 points 2 steals and a block. Grant Massaroni had 6 boards, 4 points, 1 assist and a steal in 12 minutes off the bench.

Oneonta outshot New Paltz from the field and from the line, had 34 boards to 29 for the Hawks and only had 11 turnovers to 14 for the visitors.

Andrew Seniuk was the high man for the Hawks with 16 points and 3 rebounds. Brandon Guest just missed a double-double with 13 points and a game high 9 rebounds. He also had 5 assists, 3 steals and a block for a pretty good day at the office. Dylan Balducci had 9 points in 11 minutes off the bench.

The Hawks did outshoot the Red Dragons from long distance as they went 7 for 18 from behind the arc. Oneonta was 5 for 17 from long range.

Oneonta ups their overall record to 12-6 and takes over sole possession of 3rd place in the conference with a 7-4 record. They head up to the North Country this weekend, for a battle royale against the Cardinals in Plattsburgh on Friday evening, and hope to duplicate their success of last year, when they scored on the game's final possession, to walk out of Memorial hall with a W. They will meet up with Potsdam on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 PM. I think they will go 1-1 on the weekend and still be in 3rd place when Sunday morning rolls around.

New Paltz falls to 3-14 overall and 2-9 in the YAC. They will follow their travel partners to the North Country to take on Potsdam on Friday night and Plattsburgh on Saturday.

Prayer request for BRADLEY DOYLEY

I'm reaching out to my D3 Hoops family and asking them to put in a word, to whomever they pray to, for BRADLEY DOYLEY. BRADLEY is a senior at Buffalo State and a 3 time member of the basketball team here at Buff State (played half season last year). IN the 3 plus years that I have known BRADLEY, through basketball and working phones at the Erie County Board of Elections (on election night), I can honestly say that he was 1 of the happiest young men that I have ever met. An infectious smile that stood out amongest his teammates, in good times and in bad.

Right now BRADLEY is going through some real bad times. He was rushed, by ambulance,  this past Monday to Buffalo General Hospital where he is in ICU. His heart has stopped beating 4 times within the 1st 48 hours that he was in the hospital. A myriad of problems with his lungs, heart and kidneys. Doctors are doing all that they can but he is clearly in struggle for his life. Details are sketchy as to what caused this rapid deterioration, but right now BRADLEY (and his family) could use all the prayers possible.

I'd really appreciate it if, at some point in your busy day, you could send 1 up for BRADLEY. BRADLEY, and his family, would really appreciate!

Go BRADLEY!!!

All-Time

My thoughts and prayers are with Bradley Doyley and his family during this very difficult time.

magicman

Watched Bradley play for several years. Can only imagine what his family must be going through at this time. Praying that the medical team figures out the problems and he makes a complete recovery.
