Terrible, selfish play by Cardinal player Jonathan Patron to get tossed from the game.  He threw the ball at the official after a foul call and deserved the ejection.  Oswego has gone on a 14-4 run since to make a one point game an 11 point game with 9:03 to go.

edit:  Now it's a 25-9 run...

He didn't throw the ball at the official he passed it to him rather firmly. Jon wasn't happy as that official had called him for 3 rather cheap fouls that were all highly questionable. He called 2 fouls on him early in the first half about 50 seconds apart limiting Jon's 1st half court time to 3 minutes. Then he calls another cheap foul on him and that's what precipitated the technical. Jon was getting banged pretty good inside with no calls on his end, so naturally he was upset at getting his 3rd foul from this same ref. Normally most refs would call a technical but I can't remember the last time time I've seen a ref eject someone from a game for being unhappy over a call and getting a little pissed off. This ref had Jon in his crosshairs from the moment the game started as he was an official at a game in Plattsburgh a few weeks ago and had words with the Coach concerning Jon, at that time. This ref was out to lunch the entire game and made a number of poor calls against both teams. He is without a doubt, the worst referee that has officiated games in Plattsburgh in the 40 plus years I've watched games in Memorial Hall. If we never see him again it will be too soon.

Having said that I don't think the 3 best refs in the world would have made a difference in the game tonight as Oswego State, and particularly Brian Sortino, were firing on all cylinders. When you nail 18 three pointers in a game and shoot better than 56% from downtown, you are usually going to win. Hats off to Oswego.

He "passed it to him rather firmly"?  That's your defense?  I watched the game and while the officiating was less than ideal, players passing the ball that "firmly" at the official should be at least a technical every single time.  I am a Card alum, but the glasses aren't completely rose colored.  It was a one point game at the moment that happened and became a blowout afterwards.

Sorry, to me that play is inexcusable.  That said, there hasn't been any discipline issues with this team all year, so I would chalk this up as a bad night and move on to bigger and better things.  Maybe, just maybe, we'll get another shot at the Lakers...

Weekend Round Up

Plattsburgh State 99 Cortland State 78

I had the Cardinals winning this one 86-78. The Red Dragons did their part but the Cardinals had the century mark in mind. They had their foot on the accelerator from the opening tip and Cortland was just along for the ride.

Plattsburgh's Ed Correa got things started for the Cardinals as he opened the scoring with a jumper and Magic Grigg followed that with an offensive rebound and putback on the next trip down the floor. Plattsburgh scored 2 more times on a jumper by Xavier Thomas plus a drive and layin by Zack Coleman. Just like that it was 8-0 and the tone was set for the entire game. Not even the loss of Plattsburgh's leading scorer Kyle Richardson, who was hit with 2 quick fouls and had to take a seat on the bench for the rest of the half, could slow the Cardinals down. Richardson only played 5 minutes in the 1st period but Jon Patron came in for him and scored 12 points with 4 rebounds in the final 15 minutes of the half.

Plattsburgh opened up a double digit lead at 15-5 with 14:15 still left in the half. They increased their lead to 37-21 for the biggest advantage of the period but Cortland managed to close the gap to 46-38 with 22 seconds left. Eli Bryant then dribbled the clock down and did what he's done a number of times this year...burying a 3 pointer as the half ends for a 49-38 Plattsburgh lead.

The Red Dragons stayed with the Cardinals through the early part of the 2nd half as the teams traded baskets. Plattsburgh slowly began to stretch their lead, fueled by the play of the X-Man, Xavier Thomas, and Kyle Richardson. Both players scored 10 points through the first 11 minutes of the period, which were highlighted by a pair of monster dunks by Thomas to add to his total of year long crowd pleasers. First he jammed home a mighty tomahawk dunk and then off a nice lob pass from Ed Correa he slammed down another one. Richardson also added a dunk shortly after on a fast break at the 10 minute mark and another layup by Richardson seconds later gave the Cardinals a 79-59 lead with 9:11 left to play. The lead grew to 26 points and Plattsburgh brought in the reserves with 4 to 5 minutes left. A 3 pointer by Brandon Johnson gave the home team their largest lead of the night at 95-68 with 4:12 on the clock, as the Cardinals claimed their 13th conference win.

Five Plattsburgh players hit double figures led by Jon Patrons double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds, both game highs. Ed Correa had 19 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Xavier Thomas had 16 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Thomas also had a great defensive game limiting Cortland's leading scorer, Blair Estarfaa to only 10 points.

Kyle Richardson had 12 second half points to finish with 14 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, a block and a steal.
Eli Bryant had 10 points, 4 assists and 2 rebounds.

Cortland got 21 points from TJ Hefele who tied for game honors with Patron. Hefele went 5 for 10 from long distance, had 4 rebounds 2 assists and a steal. Blair Estarfaa had 10 points and 3 assists, while Michael Kelly came off the bench to also drop in 10 points.

Cardinals shot a sizzling 37x63 from the field (58.7%), 7x24 from deep (29.2%) and 18x23 from the line (78.3%)

Cortland was 29x71 (40.8%) from the field, 10x31 from long range (32.3%) and 10x17 from the stripe (58.8%)

Plattsburgh had 46 rebounds to 29 for Cortland but the Cards had 14 turnovers to only 9 for the Dragons. The Cardinals had 23 assists for the game.

with age came?

Looks like a slight "bump in the road" for the Cards...  there is nothing worse than a referee who "makes the game about he or she (notice how politically correct I'm being?) rather than the players"..... sometimes a poor ref is the biggest grandstander of all??!!  Wasn't there so I can't comment for sure but when it comes to d3 hoops there is NOBODY I trust more than the Magicman!!  End of story!! ;)

When it comes to trustorthy folks from the north country, I'm gonna have to go with MRS.  Magicman over magicman. She told me about the turtle and the pitchfork. Magicman has yet to reveal what that's all about!

On a side note..... I'm betting that for all the games All-time and I have agreed on this year, this coming Satruday wont be 1 of the days/games. :o Love the SUNYAC

The new D3hoops Top 25 poll has been released and Plattsburgh State is ranked #23. The Cardinals with a 1-1 week, after losing to a red hot Oswego State over the weekend, fell one spot from last week's #22 placement. They had their point total decrease by over 50% though, as it went from 130 points down to 60.

Lancaster Bible remained in the #15 spot but did have their point total increase from 239 to 284.

NYU and Rochester both received 43 points in the Others Receiving Votes category which tied them for 26th place. Rochester is tied with Emory for 1st place in the UAA conference with a 9-2 record, 2 games in front of NYU. Emory which was #24 last week fell to #28 this week after going 1-1 over the weekend. Both Rochester and Emory have the same identical schedule left, as they play Carnegie Mellon and Case Western Reserve this weekend, then end up playing each other on 2-27. There is a very good chance that game on the 27th will decide the automatic bid to the NCAA's since there is no conference tournament in the UAA.

No other team in the East Region received any points.

The SUNYAC has announced the Player of the Week award for the week ending February 14th is Brian Sortino from Oswego State.

No surprises here as I named him the Player of the Week on Saturday evening about 6:05 PM when he was draining his 8th three pointer of the game against Plattsburgh to put the Lakers up 75-63 with just under 7 minutes left to play. His 38 points against the league leaders was all he needed to earn the weekly honor in my book, but he had 2 other pretty good games as well to lead the Lakers to a 3-0 week. Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website.

Brian Sortino, Oswego

Sortino was Oswego's key offensive factor this week as the Lakers went 3-0 against SUNYAC opponents. The junior averaged 24.3 points between the three games, scoring 73 points in total. On Saturday, in the victory over No. 22 Plattsburgh, Sortino scored a career-high 38 points. From beyond the arc, Sortino shot .524 (11-for-21) and from the field .436 (24-for-55). Over the course of the three games, the Fariport, N.Y. native not only shot the ball well but also played the role of distributor. He dished out 16 assists compared to only four turnovers and tied a season-high seven assists against Plattsburgh.

Congratulations to Brian for the weekly honor and for the display he put on in Memorial Hall on Saturday. I would have enjoyed it more if it was in a losing cause, but it certainly was as good a performance as I've witnessed all year.

Weekend Round Up

Oswego State 90 Plattsburgh State74

Back on November 2nd I predicted that Oswego State was going to come in 1st place in the conference. And that was before I knew that they had a 6'10" transfer headed their way. They had a lot of talent returning from last year's SUNYAC  Champs and I thought they were the favorites. Brockport was my choice for the team to challenge them. I figured my Cardinals would be in the upper ranks of the YAC and would make the playoffs but knowing we graduated 5 starters, plus 2 other players didn't leave me with much hope of winning the conference.

Fast forward 3+ months and the Cardinals are on the verge of winning the top seed in the YAC. Brockport is right there in 2nd place, tied with Geneseo and the Lakers are a half game behind that pair. So the Cardinals have been a pleasant surprise. Their 3 seniors, Kyle Richardson, Ed Correa, and Xavier Thomas, moved into the starting rotation, and have been as good or better than anyone else's top 3. The emergence of freshman Jon Patron and sophomore transfer Eli Bryant has given Plattsburgh 5 double figure scorers and been a big reason for the success of the team. Several other freshman recruits have provided solid minutes off the bench and the Cardinals aren't rebuilding but appear to have reloaded.

The Lakers were slow to get out the gate once conference play rolled around. They did fine in the non-conference portion of their schedule going 7-0 but got off to a horrendous start in the YAC going 1-4 in their first 5 games. And all 4 of those losses were by double digits. I was shaking my head wondering where the Laker team, that I watched win a SUYAC  title last February, had disappeared to. I'm still not sure where they went, but I sure know that they are back. Since that 1-4 start they have went 9-2 and both losses were down to the wire finishes. Their game was on display this past Saturday in Plattsburgh's Memorial Hall and it was downright scary.

The Lakers grabbed an early 10-4 lead, then stretched it to 13-6 and already their 3 point shooting was quickly featured, as 3 different players hit from long distance. I had a bad feeling already and the game was only 6 minutes old. The bad feeling got worse when the Cards' Jon Patron, who came in and hit 2 quick baskets, was also whistled for 2 quick fouls, and back to the bench he went for the rest of the half. His total playing time was 2 minutes, 44 seconds  and one of Plattsburgh's biggest threats was negated by some questionable calls. The Lakers got another pair of 3 pointers from Dustin Pond and Demetrius Mitchell to give them their biggest lead of the first half at 29-17 with 8:43 to play. The Cardinals were still down 11 points after Brian Sortino hit yet another 3 pointer with 3 minutes remaining. It was the Lakers 8th triple in the period in only 15 attempts.

Plattsburgh's Xavier Thomas pumped up the crowd with another one his acrobatic dunks and Isaiah Johnson hit a short jumper to cut the lead to 7 points. The Lakers' Alex Rawa hit his 4th basket of the half with 17 seconds left but Eli Bryant once again calmly dribbled the clock down to 3 seconds and fired up a jumper to make it 38-31 at the break. Rawa led all scorers with 11 points and Sortino had 10. Bryant had 10 points for the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh outscored Oswego 7-2 in the first few minutes of the 2nd period to get within a deuce of the Lakers at 40-38, but 5 straight Oswego points made it a 3 possession game once again. The lead would fluctuate between 3 and 7 points until the Cardinals down by 7 points got a jumper by Patron, a layup by Kyle Richardson and a 3 pointer by Ed Correa to tie the game at 48 with 14:52 left to play. Sortino scored inside, Patron followed suit and then Sortino buried a 3 pointer. Keith Tyson followed with a layup to boost the Laker lead back to 5 points. Correa scored again on a short jumper and after Oswego misfired Jon Patron scored inside to make it 55-54 with 12:15 remaining. After the teams exchanged possessions with neither team scoring, a foul was called on Patron that most of the Plattsburgh faithful were trying to figure out. When Patron passed the ball back to the ref rather firmly the ref called a technical foul, which was to be expected. What wasn't expected was Patron's ejection from the game for his behavior. Usually the technical is punishment enough for a player who is frustrated by the officiating and says or does something he regrets. I can't remember the last time I saw a player ejected from a game for any reason much less for what Patron did. As I mentioned earlier, this official had it in for Patron before the game even started, which was a carryover from a previous game he reffed in the 'Burgh.

Oswego got 4 points off the technical call and the teams traded trips to the line which made the score 60-58 with just under 11 minutes left. That was as close as the Cardinals would ever be. Once again the 3 pointer became the Lakers' primary weapon. Sortino drained one, then it was Alex Rawa's turn. Keith Tyson got back into the act with another triple and then Sortino hit 2 more, 45 seconds apart. Plattsburgh got a 3 pointer from Richardson and a layup inside from him as well, but the Cards had been outscored 15-5 and the lead was now a 12 point 75-63 margin, with 7 minutes left in the game. Oswego kept piling on, as Tyson hit a jumper and Demetrius Mitchell buried another one from long range and the run was now 20-5 as the lead grew to 17 points. This one was over and it was just a matter of what the final score would be.

I had predicted an 86-77 Plattsburgh win, which is 163 total points. The final was 90-74 which is 164 total points. I was close on that at least. Oswego made 18 three pointers in the game against the 4th best three point defense in the country. Or at least it was the 4th best defense in the country at the time. That's something that not even the Pope could have predicted. That was the Lakers best 3 point effort of the season with their best percentage (56.3%) of the season. All you can do is sit, watch and marvel when a team is that hot. Many of those made threes came with Cardinal players in their faces, but it didn't matter. Jerry Reed said it best..."When You're Hot, You're Hot" and the Lakers were on fire. I haven't seen a display like that since Cortland hit 15 of 22 from long range almost 5 years ago to the day, on February 12th, 2011. They beat us that night 83-69.

Brian Sortino had a career high 38 points on 13x25 shooting. He was 8x12 from long distance and 4x6 from the line. He also had a season high 7 assists and grabbed 3 rebounds. Alex Rawa had 17 points on 6x9 shooting with 5x7 from long distance. He added 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Both Keith Tyson and mark Candelario had 10 points. Candelario had a team high 7 rebounds, as did Mykelle Krecko.

Plattsburgh also had 4 players in double figures led by Kyle Richardson with 24 pts (8x15 fg, 4x7 3's, 4x4 ft)  and a team high 8 rebounds. Richardson also had 3 blocks and 2 steals. Ed Correa had 18 points (5x14 fg. 2x8 3's 6x6 ft) 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Eli Bryant had 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. Jon Patron had 10 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist in 12 minutes of court time. Xavier Thomas tied Richardson with 8 rebounds and had 6 points.

The Lakers shot 33x65 from the field (50.8%), 18x32 from long range (56.3%) and 6x9 from the line (66.7%).  Plattsburgh was 26x64 (40.6%) from the field, 6x20 from downtown (30.0%) and 16x17 from the line (94.1%).

Rebounds and turnovers were fairly even with Oswego grabbing 35 boards to 37 for Plattsburgh. The Lakers had 10 turnovers and the Cards had 11.

Oswego improves to 17-6 and remains tied with Cortland for 4th place in the YAC with a 10-6 record. They will host Geneseo this evening and then travel to Cortland for a game that may determine who gets a home playoff game and who goes on the road. Based on what I saw this weekend I'm thinking that Oswego will be challenging Brockport for that 2nd seed. I can see them winding up 12-6 and perhaps a tiebreaker coming into play to determine who gets the bye.

Plattsburgh is now 18-4 overall and still needs a win to clinch the regular season crown.  Losses by Geneseo and Brockport will also make them a winner. At 13-2 in the YAC and last place Potsdam coming to the 'Burgh today, I think the top seed will be theirs right around 9:15  tonight.

More Weekend Games

Friday Night

Geneseo State 77 New Paltz State 63

I had the Knights winning this one by an 80-69 final score. I wasn't too far off the final score as Geneseo finally pulled away from the pesky Hawks with about 5 minutes remaining in the game. New Paltz fought back from a 12 point, 47-35 deficit, to tie the game at 52 on a Dylan Balducci 3 pointer. The Knights kicked into high gear though and a 13-0 run opened up the daylight they would need to finish off the home team.

The usual suspects John Decker with 22 points and Justin Ringen with 21 points led the way for the Knights. Jordi Menkhorst and Kevin Zabransky both dropped in 10 points.

Dylan Balducci had 18 points  and RJ Rosa had 16 for the Hawks.

Fredonia State 91   Buffalo State 88

The Bengals gave up a double digit lead early and then fell behind by double digit themselves early in the 2nd half and late in the game. They overcame the first 10 point deficit and actually took a 59-58 lead on a Jordan Chateau layup with 13 minutes left to play. The Blue Devils Brandon Hodge hit a 3 pointer a minute later and Fredonia went back in front to stay. Down by 10 points again at 83-73 with 4:37 remaining the Bengals made a furious rally to tie the game and force overtime. They got as close as 87-85 and had the ball with 18 seconds left and a chance to tie or take the lead but a charging call gave the ball to Fredonia and this one was history.
I had the Bengals winning by an 83-75 final score but the Blue Devils threw me a curve and I swung and missed.

Fredonia's Ian Helps was the game's leading scorer with 23 points. He also led his team with 7 rebounds
.
Brandon Hodge was absolutely perfect as he was 8x8 from the field, 2x2 from long distance, and 2x2 from the line for a smooth 20 points off the bench, in just 17 minutes of playing time. Not often you get to say you were perfect. Good job Brandon.

Kareem Brown had 18 points and 6 boards, while Jared Fish had 10 points and 5 rebounds.

Kevin Marmolejos led the Bengals with 21 points. Mike Henry had a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Nico McLean also had a double-double of 16 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists and 6 steals. Lovell Smith had 18 points and Jordan Chateau had 9 points and 8 rebounds.

Brockport State 65  Oneonta State 56

I had the Golden Eagles winning this one by a 77-74 final score. Neither team came close to my figures but I did get the winner right. Oneonta held the lead for the first 8 minutes of this game but then Brockport went on a 19-2 run and went in front by a 33-17 score, en route to a 35-22 halftime bulge. During that 10 minute stretch that the Golden Eagles were gaining the upper hand, the Red Dragons had 7 turnovers and went 1 for 9 from the field when they did get a chance to fire one up.

Oneonta got back into this game as they chipped away at the deficit and outscored Brockport by a 20-6 margin over the first 8 minutes of the 2nd half. Down 43-34 the Dragons got 8 straight points on a Mikey McElroy  three pointer, a Jack Kolosky layup and another triple from Grant Massaroni. The Golden Eagles were still ahead but the score was 43-42 with 12:21 left to play.

That would be as close as Oneonta would get though as Brockport refused to surrender the lead. Once more at 47-45 they were a single possession away from a lead but Port got a jumper from Levi Pace and a 3 pointer from Clifton Lyerly and the Red Dragons were never closer than 4 points the rest of the way.

Hamed Shamseldin scored 6 of the final 10 points for Brockport and it was good to see him back from an injury that had kept him out of 3 complete games and large parts of 2 others. He came off the bench to play 19 minutes and ended up leading a balanced Golden Eagle effort with 11 points. He went 4x5 in his return missing only 1 of 2 three pointers he attempted. He also had 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Clifton Lyerly and Levi Pace both had 9 points. Matthew Smith and Devonn Gavin each had 8 points. Marcus Blythers led the team with 7 rebounds and Smith had 6 boards.

Oneonta got 13 points and 7 boards from Mikey McElroy to lead the team. Lawrence Coleman had 10 points with 9 rebounds while Jackson Zuvic had 10 points and 4 assists. Jack Dignan had 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 points, a steal and a block.

Brockport remains tied with Geneseo in 2nd place while the Red Dragons may have to play Buffalo State on the final day of the season for the 6th and final playoff spot. If form holds up Oneonta should beat Fredonia, and Buffalo State should beat New Paltz on Friday night. That would set up a winner takes the prize, Saturday afternoon matinee for the 6th seed. Fredonia may have something to say about that though, and New Paltz has already put a damper on the Bengals once, so we know that it can happen.

Oswego State 80 Potsdam State 69

That score sounds familiar and that's because my crystal ball had that score floating around in the murkiness and I thought it was the Geneseo-New Paltz game that was going to end up 80-69. I said this game was going to be 79-64. Instead the Geneseo-New Paltz game was 77-63  I see now what happened. I had the scores correct but made a mistake in transferring them to my post. I actually would have had 1 perfect game and 1 game that was off by 3 points. :D Still I wasn't far off and I did say that the Bears would beat that 18 point spread they were supposed to lose by. The Bears actually played the Lakers tighter than the Cardinals did the next day. Who'da thunk it.

Looks like the Lakers ran into the same problem the Cardinals did when they traveled over to Potsdam, losing at the half, but at least they weren't down by double digits at the break. Still it was a moral victory for the lowly Bears to be ahead of the Lakers that far into the game. It was a back and forth first half with the largest lead on either side was a 5 point advantage by the Lakers on several occasions. The Bears could only muster a 2 point lead but held the upper hand by a 38-37 score going into the locker rooms.

Things would change quickly though once the 2nd half started as the Lakers opened with a 12-2 run that had them in front 49-40 with 3 minutes gone by. That was the comfort zone that Oswego needed and the Bears, after Mitch Lamerson hit a 3 pointer to make it 51-45, could never get closer than 7 points the rest of the way,  as the lead hovered between 9 and 14 points for the most part.

Kyle Covley was the high scorer in the contest as he had 23 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds and a steal.

Alex Rawa had 16 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists.

Brian Sortino had 15 points, 3 assist and 2 steals. I see he was human and went 0 for 3 from long distance against the Bears. Where was that the next day against my Cards. I guess the law of averages wasn't in my favor after his ofer in Potsdam.

Keith Tyson had a double-double of 13 points with 10 rebounds, while Dustin Pond had 10 points, 4 boards, 2 assists and a block.

Mykelle Krecko was the leading rebounder in the game with 11 boards. 3 assists 2 points and a block.

The Bears got 18 points from Josh Blagrove who also had 2 assists and 2 rebounds. Nosa Onabor just missed a double-double with 13 points and 9 rebounds.

Joe Estramonte had 12 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Oswego pulled off the rare North Country Double which has been easier in the past few years since the Bears have fallen on hard times. Still no easy feat.
