I'm surprised Geneseo was able to get to Oswego the way it looked up there in the Rochester area (according to my social media).

When Coach Curle called me at noon today to tell me that the Cards game was cancelled he said the Geneseo-Oswego game was a go and would be the only one played, so he must have had good info that they were already there or were close to being there.

I'm surprised that the Plattsburgh game was cancelled. We only got a couple of inches of snow here overnight then a brief period of sleet this morning around 8 AM. By 9 AM it was raining and it rained all day long. The roads were bare. I know they got snow longer than we did over in the St Lawrence Valley where Potsdam is because the temperature was colder there and the snow didn't change over to rain as quickly as it did here if at all but it's only 90 miles and I think they would have outran the snow after 30 miles or so.

Oswego State defeats Geneseo State by a final score of 75-67.

I'm a bit worried about the 3 games in 4 nights that will now occur for 3 of the teams in the conference (Brockport, Potsdam, Plattsburgh). I wonder if the extra day will have any effect. Probably not too much but thinking out loud.

Tuesdays Result

Oswego State 75  Geneseo State 67

Final score wasn't too far off from my projection of a 77-73 Oswego win. The Lakers could have scored at the end of the game but chose to pull it back out after they broke the Geneseo press.

After a closely contested first half the Lakers took control of this game about midway through the 2nd period. Geneseo had a 30-29 lead at the break and they outscored the Lakers 7-2 to start the the final half. Oswego finally caught them with 14 minutes left in the game on an Alex Rawa 3 pointer that tied the score at 42. Back to back layups from Keith Tyson was followed with a layup by Demetrius Mitchell forcing a Geneseo time out. After both teams misfired and the Knights turned it over, Mitchell buried a three pointer to make it 51-42 and Oswego had their biggest lead of the game. The Lakers maintained a lead of 6 to 9 points for the next few minutes and then Mitchell struck again with another threeball to make it 60-49. Thirty seconds later Tyson snuck inside for another layup and the lead was 13. His 3 pointer a few minutes later gave the Lakers the largest lead of the night at 67-51 with 3:52 left in the game. Nine unanswered Geneseo points cut the lead to 67-60 but Brian Sortino buried a jumper and the Lakers closed this one out by hitting 6 straight free throws for the final score.

Keith Tyson was the Laker of the day as he led the team with 23 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. He was 10x12 from the field, 1x2 from deep and 2x2 from the line.

Demetrius Mitchell had 13 points and 4 rebounds. Alex Rawa had 12 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds.

Brian Sortino had 9 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and a steal. Kyle Covely had 9 points 3 rebounds and 2 assists.  Mark Candelario led the team with 9 rebounds, 4 points, 2 assists and 2 blocks.

Geneseo got 18 points and 7 rebounds from Justin Ringen. John Decker had 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Kevin Crockett, Jon Cohen and Jack Eisenberg all scored 7 points with Eisenberg hauling down 6 rebounds as well.

Oswego shot 46.8% from the field (29x62), 32.0% from long range (8x25), and 64.3% from the line (9x14).
The Knights shot 45.3% from the field (24x53), 41.2% from beyond the arc (7x17), and 75% from the line (12x16)

Oswego outrebounded Geneseo by a 37 to 30 margin and the Lakers took excellent care of the ball with only 4 turnovers. Geneseo had a total of 10 turnovers.

The Lakers improve to 18-6 overall and they move into sole possession of 3rd place with an 11-6 conference record. Brockport, with a 10-5 record will need a win tonight against Cortland to stay in front of the Lakers. It could also turn out to be a key win if these two teams get into a tiebreaker battle. The Lakers with only a single game remaining on Friday at Cortland could improve their chances of a Pool C bid if they finish the regular season with a 19-6 record. A win and a loss, or 2 wins and a loss in the YAC playoffs would leave them at 20-7 or 21-7. It would place them squarely on the bubble and be dependent on the number of upsets taking place among the conference leaders across the D3 landscape.

Geneseo falls to 16-7 overall and their 10-6 conference record ties them for 4th place with Cortland. They do own the tiebreaker over the Red Dragons, however by virtue of their sweep of the season series. They will face the North Country pair of Potsdam on Friday evening and Plattsburgh State on Saturday afternoon.

New Regional Rankings have been released.

Plattsburgh State hangs onto their #1 ranking.

#1 Plattsburgh State
#2 Rochester
#3 Geneseo State
#4 Brockport State
#5 Oswego State
#6 NYU

Oneonta State and St. John Fisher were replaced by Brockport State and NYU.

Brockport went 3-0 last week with a win over Oneonta and went from not being ranked (I'm guessing they were in the #7 spot last week) to sliding into the #4 spot.

Oswego was bumped down into the 5th spot by Brockport which surprises me a little because the Lakers went 3-0 last week and beat the #1 team in the rankings, Plattsburgh State, on the road. Oswego's win last night over #3 Geneseo should boost  them a bit higher next week if they can take care of business this weekend against Cortland.

NYU won their only game on last week on Friday but lost on Sunday to Rochester, a game that won't be factored in until next week.

As I think they should have.  This looks about right, save the Lancaster Bible question.  For the record, the schedule you play has to count for something.  I don't have a problem with them not appearing in the NCAA rankings...

Wednesday February 17th    Three games on tap 2 in the SUNYAC and  1 non-conference game

SUNY-Canton  at   Fredonia State      7:00 PM

Fredonia playing a late non-conference tilt with Canton. Odd time for that to take place. Canton an independent that is transitioning into Division III. The Kangaroos have beaten teams from the SUNYAC (Potsdam), from the Liberty League (Clarkson-twice), from the Empire 8 conference (Utica College, Houghton), from the NESCAC conference (Connecticut College) and from the NEAC conference (SUNYIT, Morrisville) among others. They are currently 18-3 and I think have a good chance of beating the Blue Devils on their home court. The oddsmakers apparently agree with me as they have made the Roos a 6 point road favorite. I hope Fredonia proves me and the oddsmakers wrong but I think Canton will win this one by an 82-73 final score.

Brockport State  at  Cortland State     7:30 PM

This was supposed to take place last night and Mother Nature got in the way. Both teams looking to make a move in the standings. Brockport looking to solidify 2nd place now that Geneseo fell out of a tie with them. They also need to be wary of hard charging Oswego, who looks to be the main threat to steal the 2nd seed from the Golden Eagles.

Cortland has designs of their own but the 2nd seed seems out if reach. Even if they defeat the Eagles tonight, to split the season series, Brockport will still own the tiebreaker against them by virtue of their win over the top seed Plattsburgh,(assuming Plattsburgh will be the top seed) while the Red Dragons got swept by the YAC leaders. So the only hope Cortland has for the #2 seed would be if Brockport loses all 3 remaining games and I don't see that happening with Potsdam coming to Brockport on the weekend. Cortland also loses the tiebreaker to Geneseo, so they need to win out and hope for the best in order to move up the ladder. They can still beat out Oswego, if they win the finale against the Lakers, and of course, tonight's game. The best they can hope for, I believe, is a home game in the quarterfinal round.

The oddsmakers think that the Golden Eagles are the better team and have favored them by a 5 point margin. Brockport has been playing quite well lately as they have put together a 5 game win streak and 7 of their last 8. The only blemish being a last second loss to Geneseo on a John Decker 3 pointer with just 3 seconds on the clock. I think they will prevail tonight as well, in a hard fought game. Brockport wins this one 79-73.

Potsdam  at  Plattsburgh State      7:30 PM

Another casualty of yesterday's weather that will only make it tougher for the Cardinals as they head west for the long road trip on the weekend. Now forced to play 3 games in 4 days the chances of a 2-0 road trip got considerably weaker, especially since Geneseo got to play their mid-week game on time. And of course we have to play the Knights on Saturday instead of Friday, which will be the to their benefit. If we could have played Brockport on Saturday it would have evened out a bit because they would also be playing their 3rd game in 4 days. IT is what is. Hopefully my guys can pull off another 2-0 road trip which they have already done 3 time this year. This one will be the toughest one though. I'll be happy to go 1-1.

Tonight the Cardinals can clinch the top seed and regular season SUNYAC crown for the 2nd year in a row. Potsdam will be hard pressed to prevent that from happening. The Cardinals were looking forward to do that on last Saturday's Senior Day against Oswego but the Lakers spoiled the party. I don't think they will be disappointed tonight.

The oddsmakers have made Plattsburgh a big 27 point favorite in this one and the Bears will struggle to keep it under that margin. Plattsburgh will look to have the regulars on the bench early so they can rest up for the weekend. Cardinals win this one 91-67.

Brockport 43, Cortland 31, half.  Eagles by 39-24 with three minutes remaining in the half. Knotted at 20 at 10:30. Quicker and bigger Port shooting 64 percent. Having its way inside. O. Adeniran 10 pts for Brockport. JP Reagan 11 pts for the Corts who count 11 turnovers

Cortland 73, Brockport 72, final

Whale of a second half for the host RDragons ......JP Reagan 28 pts (6x10fg, 2x2 3s, 14x16ft) in 29 minutes and point guard TJ Hefele 17 pts(6x13fg) in 35 minutes show the way .......

Tale of two halves. Looks like teams traded jerseys! Eagles snap 20-20 tie at 10:30 of the first half, lead 39-24 and go on to 43-21 intermission edge. J. Martinez sparks Corts starting the second half with pair of  penetrating buckets. Game on. Reagan FTs at 7:17 bring CSt within 59-58. C. Lyerly quickly lands a trey for the Port. Hefele immediately drives for a deuce and it's 62-60 Eagles at 6:30. Reagan FT and then a driving hoop put Cortland up 63-62. B. Estarfaa driving feed for Reagan layin makes it 65-62. Lyerly basket at 3:37 tightens matters. That man Reagan delivers again and Cortland leads by five at 2:23. Hefele fall-back hoop makes it 71-66 at 1:00. D. Gavin connects in the lane at 0:45. Hefele makes one FT at 0:22, Gavin one FT at 0:15, Corts' J. Morales one FT at 0:12 and it's 73-69. Gavin heaves in a trey at 0:04 -- 73-72. Long inbound Cortland pass expires the clock.

Cortland with 11 turnovers in the first half has just one beyond ......and turns to a driving attack that played a large part in 25x30 free throwing. To the contrary, Brockport just 11x22 from the stripe and no longer getting the good looks at the bucket. Eagles shoot 60 percent from the field in the first half and wind up just over 50 percent(28x53fg, 5x13 3s). Cortland 22x48fg, 4x14 3s and 33-26 rebounding advantage. Pretty fair RDragon defensive turnaround as well, especially Reagan insertion for C. Joseph for inside protection.

M. Kelly another revival force in 11 pt(3x6, 5x5ft, 5 rebs) performance in 27'. Estarfaa, the focus of Port defense, with 8 pts(3x6fg, 5 rebs) in 40'. Eagles with five double figure scorers. Lyerly 14 pts(6x10fg) 6 rebs in 32', L. Pace 12 pts(6x8fg), O. Adeniran 12 pts(4x6fg), Gavin 10 pts, , M. Smith 10 pts(3x5fg) in 30'. Brockport uses 13 players, Cortland 11

Plus K to both of you.

So you guys have given me quite a dilemma. Was rooting for Mikey McElroy and the Oneonta Red Dragons to get in the playoffs and hopefully make a return trip to the 'Burgh.

Have always rooted for my Bengal friend along with Jordan Glover and his teammates to get back up here to the North Country as well.

Now you could play each other for the final piece of the puzzle, if you both win Friday night. (Which is not a given) My crystal ball may have a breakdown if I have to choose between the Bengals and the Red Dragons on Saturday. I'm not a happy camper that I'm about to be placed in this position. :P ::)
