Oh those refs  ::)

I was at Oswego for the first game...sadly, my team lost...but as a neutral observer of the second game, the officiating in the final minute was questionable at best.

Sorry Keene State lost :(. They kept pace most of the game, and the team should be proud of what they've done!

I'm glad that someone who was there was also a little iffy on some of the calls. Can't blame it on home cookin' though  ;D

They did...Keene just missed opportunities when it was tied with 8 or 9 minutes left that you need to capitalize on to beat good teams.  After all the tribulations, a good Sweet 16 run though that I truthfully did not expect.

Of note, all of the referees at Oswego tonight I have seen floating around various New England venues this year.  The NCAA must take refs and put them in unfamiliar territory for the tournament.

The calls at the end of Oswego-Wooster game were strange given the calls throughout other portions of the game...and they must have called a record number of offensive fouls in the Keene State-CNU game.

You should be thankful to have not had to watch the games on video. The video feed wasn't very good (and neither were the announcers, apparently, according to a Wooster poster on their own board - but I had it on mute). It cut out and froze a lot. All of the other sites had it very together IMO.

Thanks for letting me know about that AllStar. I was rooting for Keene State as much as I rooted for Oswego State. I thought the foul that was called against Covely of Oswego that sent Fanelly to the line for the game winning free throws was questionable. Our video feed was lousy but it appeared that he threw up an off balance shot that was a poor shot selection and the ref kind of bailed him out with the whistle. Then I read that it was a hook shot according to Wooster's website. Not my idea of a high percentage shot to be taking with the game on the line unless you're Kareem with a sky hook.

Also hard to tell what happened with Sortino's final move to get upcourt and make something happen. Tough to have both Cortland and Oswego sent home on last second free throws without much hope of a countermove. The SUNYAC hasn't gotten any breaks in the past few years.  :P

All I know is if that was my team I probably wouldn't be very happy with those calls!   ;D  It is interesting that those were refs who have floated around New England venues at Oswego last night.

AllStar,
I'm told that's usually what the NCAA does...they bring in refs from a region different than the region that the host school is from and also not supposed to be from the opponents region either.

When Plattsburgh hosted the first round last weekend we weren't too happy that the referees were also from New England, which is where our opponent Fitchburg State was from. We were expecting a crew from the Atlantic Region, which would have made it a neutral crew.

Dave 'd-mac' McHugh

Note on that... last weekend I was told the refs couldn't have had either of the teams the last two years. While the refs came from the Buffalo area, they hadn't had Oswego in that time... and Jason indicated to me he had a theory on that (don't all coaches?!).

I know in the Benedictine Sectional, where I was this weekend, one of the refs was rotated out (I think) at some point - possibly before the game - because they had St. Norbert in a game recently.

The NCAA takes this seriously and while people like to complain about that stuff... the refs don't have a bias. They may call the game differently, but that is up to the teams to make adjustments because you can't win a championship unless you adjust your style.

I was reminded of this on the way to Chicago this weekend watching a tape-delayed broadcast of Man U v Liverpool in UEFA Championship play. The commentators pointed out that the ref was calling a good game including solid yellow cards (at least 6), but that in a Premiere League game between the two, some of those yellows might not have been cards or calls - because the refs are used to them. In UEFA play, the refs are from elsewhere.

One other note on the end of the Oswego game - I was watching (while on the call in Benedictine) and it looked to me like the ref closest to the final play took a big step backward at contact - a usual sign they don't want to make a call. I couldn't tell because of my situation if a call should have been made, but that was an interesting indication to me.

D3hoops has released their All-Region Teams today.

Kyle Richardson from Plattsburgh State has been named the Player of the Year.

Brian Sortino from Oswego State has been named to the All-Region 1st Team.

Justin Ringen from Geneseo State has been named to the All-Region 2nd Team.

Congratuations to our 3 SUNYAC players on their awards.

A special congratulations to Kyle Richardson. I sat courtside for 26 of the games he played in, over his past 2 years at Plattsburgh State. I watched another 25+ games online.  He was always worth the price of admission. 8-) It's never easy seeing your favorite players graduate and move on. You wish their careers were just beginning, instead of ending. I have no doubt that Kyle will be just as successful in his future career as he was on the hardwood.

The NABC announced the players and coaches for the Reese's Division III College All-Star game. A surprising but welcome addition to the all star team roster was the D3hoops East Region Player of the Year, Kyle Richardson.

It's kind of a mystery how the consensus best player in the region was left off the all star team in the first place. I understand that the players are awarded their place on the all star team based on a determination by the NABC as to who the best players in each region are. This is done by a vote of all the coaches in the region and then tabulated to see who will garner the NABC's year end awards in each region and ultimately their All-American awards as well.

The top 2 players in each of the 8 regions make up the all star teams. To round out the teams there is the nationwide voting that took place from Monday March 7th till noon on Wednesday March 9th. The top two votegetters in that popularity contest are then added to the all star teams. That makes a total of 18 players, 9 for the East and 9 for the West.

There was some spirited voting going on with over 72,500 votes cast and our candidate, Kyle, came up a bit short as he was in 3rd place, missing out on the coveted top 2 spots. Our Guru had this to say about the support that Kyle received.

Quote from: Pat Coleman on March 09, 2016, 04:25:28 PM
Richardson's support petered out overnight and didn't fully bounce back this morning. He ended up in third, still with an impressive 18,178 votes. (The cut line was 21,841.)

Needless to say I was a bit disappointed to see that Kyle didn't grab one of the top 2 spots in the fan voting that took place.

Mostly I was disappointed to see that he even needed to be voted onto the all star team. I felt that the Player of the Year in the SUNYAC conference would be the 1st or certainly no worse than 2nd best player in the region. The SUNYAC was the top conference in the East Region, not just in my opinion but in the NCAA's eyes as well, with 3 or 4 SUNYAC teams listed in every one of their weekly rankings leading up to selection Monday. They were rewarded with 3 teams in the NCAA tournament.

To further back up my belief that Kyle was the top player in the East Region was the announcement on Tuesday that the D3hoops East Region Player of the Year was indeed, Kyle Richardson. That outstanding award, however, doesn't guarantee Kyle a spot on the NABC All Star Team. The results of the NABC vote would and those results haven't been released yet.

So the question that needs to be asked here is... how is Kyle now on the all star teams? He apparently wasn't one of the top 2 players in the East Region or he wouldn't have needed to be voted on by the fan vote. If he wasn't one of the top 2 players in the East Region then who were they?

I guess it's safe to assume that Mitch Ford from Nazareth was one of the top 2 players as he made the all star team. The only other player listed from the East is Kyle.

Sometimes a player that is one of the top 2 players in a region is playing in the Final Four and therefore he can't participate in the all star game so they name an alternate from his region. That wasn't the case in the East Region. There are no Final Four players from the East. So no alternate was required. In the Central Region, Lucas Johnson could be the NABC Player of the Year, but his team, Benedictine, is playing in the Final Four. Lucas can't play in the All Star Game and the FF. So it's possible that a player that wasn't one of the top 2 players in that region has been named as an alternate.

Sometimes a player that is named to the All Star team just can't make it or doesn't want to go. That could be a possibility here but I would certainly like to know who the NABC voted into a top spot in place of Kyle. I have a good idea who that would be but I'll wait for another day to rip that decision, if in fact that is the case.

One final observation...The teams are East vs West. I see the West has 3 players, since one of the West players won the fan voting. I also noticed that all 3 of the West players are on the West team. The East has 2 players and they are also on the West team. ???  I understand you have to round out the teams with guards and forwards and height issues, but I think there are enough players that if you can put all 3 West players on the West team, you certainly should be able to put the only 2 players who are from the East region on the East team.  ::)

Middle Atlantic, Atlantic, South or Central on the West team you can get away with, but somehow East players on the West team, in an East-West matchup, just sounds downright foolish. ;D

Evan Kupferburg NYU was the other in the voting along with Mitch Ford Nazareth. Richardson was 3rd and Kupferburg couldnt attend.

Once again congratulations to these players and to all the players across the D3 landscape that provided us with so many outstanding moments on the courts across the country this year. Hopefully 4 more great games this weekend with the 2 semifinal games, the All Star game and the championship game to end the season.

dcahill,
Not sure where you got your information from, but I don't see how Kyle Richardson was 3rd when he obviously is 1st if he is the East District Player of the Year.

Which, now that we know for a fact that Kyle Richardson is the NABC Player of the Year, begs the question...how was he not immediately named to the NABC Reese's All Star Game roster. Since that roster is comprised of the top 2 players in each region and we now know that Kyle was the top player in the East region, how did he end up in the fan voting that took place last week, to try and get added to an All Star team, that he already should have been on?

When I saw that Kyle was one of the 8 players on the ballot who needed to be voted onto the All Star team by the fans, I was quite disappointed because that told me he wasn't one of the top 2 players in the East Region. The All District Teams that were released this morning were determined by the NABC coaches in the East Region, from their year end votes on the players in the East Region, and were turned in back on March 4th. Once those ballots were tabulated, the top two players were selected for the Reese's All Star Team. So Kyle, as the East District Player of the Year, should never have been one of the players listed to be added to the All Star team by a popular vote.

And as the East District's Player of the Year, the implications that he was selected for the All Star game because someone else (Evan Kupferberg) couldn't go, makes no sense. The Player of the Year in the district always goes to the All Star game, unless he has a personal reason that prevents him from doing so.

Something mighty strange going on here, but I see no one coming forward with any answers.

Being on the 1st team All-American also adds some curiosity to what you posted before, Magicman. It does seem a bit backward, who knows.

A couple of thunderous dunks made by Kyle Richardson in the first half of the NABC DIII All Star game today. Kyle also displayed his passing skills on several nice feeds to his teammates.

Kyle ended his collegiate career with another double-double today in the All Star game. Just another day at the office for Kyle. His All Star team was the West team and they lost to the East Team but certainly not because of Kyle's play. Congrats on a job well done Kyle.
