Best of luck to a class guy, Cam Conover, tonight as he begins his college head coaching career at Oneonta ! No small potatoes on his agenda as his dragons play Ncaa tourney participant Albany Great Danes in Albany tonight!  I'll be cheering for Cam tonight!

Something tells me that if the Magicman isn't too "mellow" from celebrating his birthday today, that he too will be tuning in to Albany broadcast tonight!

The Law Firm

Magicman- WOW, you nearly predicted the exact score of that Buffalo State game! The Bengals roared in their debut and had some nice contributions across the board. Maine Fort Kent will be no walk in the park and should prove to be a heavyweight bout Friday night at the Sports Arena. I see that Oswego lost their opener, and Plattsburgh got a great game out of Jonathon Patron, who is proving to be a fine player in this league. Basketball season is upon us gentlemen, best of luck to all and a happy birthday to "Magicman"  ;D

Peace

Happy Birthday MagicMan

You guys do know that the Oneonta vs Albany game doesn't count on Oneonta's record.
It's an Exhibition game, so Cam's official first game is against SUNY Cobleskill which will be his first win.
Go Red Dragons

The magicman is going to one up that vision that Bengalsrule forecasts of him tuning into the Albany broadcast tonight. Coach Curle and I will be leaving the Burgh at 5:15 sharp to drive to Albany and take in that Oneonta-Albany basketball game live and in person. Fresh off a road trip to Potsdam, the magicman can still do back to backers even at his advanced age of 69. :D ;D

And Alltime, we know it doesn't count in Cam's record but it counts in Albany State's record. So the way we look at it is...it's a win win situation. If Cam loses the game...well it was an exhibition and it doesn't count. And if the Red Dragons can somehow pull off a miracle (they do happen and living right near Lake Placid we DO believe in miracles here in the North Country) then we say to hell with the NCAA... if it was good enough to count for Albany then it's good enough to count for us and Cam will improve his undefeated record to 2-0.

Cameron is currently the only undefeated coach in the SUNYAC conference with his 1-0 record. A victory he earned at Plattsburgh a few years ago when Coach Curle was absent for a game. Bengalsrule remembers it well as the Cardinals beat the Bengals on a last second buzzer beating putback as time expired.

So, the game against Cobleskill, should the Red Dragons prove victorious, will be Cameron's first win as a head coach but not his first win as a coach.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, guys. 8-)

Yeah, I missed that Buffalo State final score by a measly made 3 pointer by Pitt-Bradford.

Noticeable absence in the Buff State game...no sign of Nico McLean. And no response about it from that tight lipped Bengalsrule guy. I'm waiting to hear if it is just a minor problem. I certainly hope so.

I didn't do too badly with the Plattsburgh State score either I had it 88-70 and it was 84-68. We substituted freely with 5 minutes to go and freely got outscored 17-7 down the stretch to cost me that final score on the Plattsburgh end.

Went 5-2 on my picks with Oswego and New Paltz losing. I suspected Vassar might beat New Paltz but Oswego losing to Nazareth is deja vu of their early season problems of a year ago when they got off to a horrible start, especially in conference play.

I imagine the Great Danes will inflict considerable damage on Oneonta tonight. 5 days ago Albany beat Penn State by an 87-81 final score. It marked the first time in history that Albany beat a Big 10 team. I have no illusions about tonight. I see them probably breaking the century mark but I'm hoping the Red Dragons can put at least 50 points on the scoreboard. So that's my final guess 102-53. But I sure hope I'm wrong.

Oneonta with a workout in 97-56 exhibition slip at UAlbany whose Great Danes break out to 53-26 halftime lead. Seven Albanys strike double figure scoring cords. M. McElroy's 16 pts(5x13fg, 2x6 3) expectedly top RDragons. McElroy, L. Coleman and F. Kelly return as key performers

Those other RDragons from Cortland once again due to figure in conference chase despite tourney titlists losing flock of talent. Still return host of vets including trio coming off past season DL list: 6-9 Z. Lydon whose younger bro Tyler wears Orange quite well, 6-4 J. Cooper who was HS Lydon teammate, and 6-7 J. Prendergast who saw extensive duty two years ago.  The 6-6 C. Joseph was last season's SUNYAC tourney mvp. Other familiar faces figuring include backcourters M. Kelly, J. Morales who nailed last season's winning shot in the conference tourney final,  A. McGuire, Z. Cotton, J. Lobello, along with frontcourt personnel D. Hampton and J. Rivera. Twelve of the 18 man roster previously wore Cortland livery.
Will feature starters Kelly-- the lone senior, Morales, Cooper outside, Joseph and Hampton underneath. Lydon and Prendergast should be early entries.
Tom Spanbauer in 22nd year heading the Corts. An aide is JP Reagan, perhaps last season's mvp. Begin play Friday vs. 1-0 Purchase at Ithaca. Host 0-1 Bombers meet 0-1 St. Joe's of LI. On Saturday at Cortland it's IC/Purchase and Cortland/St. Joe's. Ithacans debuts Tuesday in OT loss to Rochester, Purchase licks Flushing's Vaughn College, Joe's bows to Medgar Evers.

A busy two days for the magicman with the trips to Potsdam on Tuesday night and Albany last night.

November 15th Plattsburgh State 84 Clarkson 68

The Cardinals opened their 2016-17 campaign in fine fashion as they used a balanced attack to put away the Golden Knights. Clarkson was able to hang with Plattsburgh for the first 10 minutes of the contest but the insertion into the game of the highest returning scorer for the Cardinals, Jon Patron, soon enabled the visiting team to open up a double digit lead lead. Patron, the reigning SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, entered the game after 5 minutes had gone by and took up right where he left off last year, before he suffered a knee injury that ended his season during the semifinals of the SUNYAC Tournament. In 11 minutes of court time in the first half he had 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. His 3 pointer with 5:48 to play in the half gave the Cardinals their first double digit lead at 31-21 and Patron went to the bench. The Redbirds increased their advantage to 14 points and settled for a 37-25 halftime edge.. Chris Middleton had 8 points to help power the Cardinals at the break.

Plattsburgh, once they attained that double figure lead, maintained that advantage throughout the contest and increased it to 26 points at 77-51 with 4:49 left in the game. Coach Curle got everyone in to the game at that point and the Knights managed to cut the final margin down to 16 points.

Jon Patron only played 22 minutes but was the game's high scorer with 26 points (9x17 fg, 4x6 3's, 4x6 ft). He added 7 rebounds and 2 assists. Sophomore Chris Middleton, in his first start in a Cardinal uniform had 13 points(4x8 fg, 1x1 3's, 4x4 ft), with 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Junior guard, Eli Bryant, filled up the stat sheet with 12 points (4x11 fg, 3x6 3's, 1x2 ft,) 4 assists, 4 steals, and 2 rebounds. Junior newcomer, Eric Mack, playing in his first game as a Cardinal, started and scored 9 points(3x6 fg, 1x2 3's, 2x4 ft's). Eric also grabbed 5 rebounds. The box score only showed him playing 13 minutes but that's not right. I know he played at least 17 minutes (10 in the first half and at least 7 in the 2nd) and I think he logged over 20 minutes of floor time.

Ian Howard a 6'3" sophomore came off the bench to lead the Cardinals in rebounds as he grabbed 8 boards. He also added 6 points and 2 steals. Brandon Johnson, also a sophomore and the shortest player on the team at 5'10", led them in blocked shots with 2. He also scored 4 points, with 3 rebounds and 2 steals. Sophomore Isaiah Hill also made his first start for Plattsburgh  scoring 7 points, with 2 rebounds 1 assist and a steal. Freshmen Adam Jaquish and Jeremy Eisenman both broke into the scoring column in their first game as a Cardinal.

Plattsburgh shot 43.3% from the field(29x67), 42.3% from behind the arc(11x26), and 57.7% from the line(15x26). They outrebounded the Knights 45-40 and had 15 turnovers to 23 for Clarkson.

The Knights  shot 37.1% from the field (23x62), only 17.2% from long distance(5x29) and 17x21(81%) from the line, the one area where they had an edge on Plattsburgh. Clarkson was led by Derek Hart with 20 points (8x9 fg, 4x6 ft) and 7 rebounds. Conrad Zampier had 12 points and Drew Zlogar just missed his double- double with 9 points and 10 rebounds.

Plattsburgh is back in action Friday night as they host the first game of the Cardinal Classic at 7:00 PM when  they meet the Elms College Blazers from Chicopee, Massachusetts. The Blazers compete in the New England Collegiate Conference and they own a 2-0 lifetime record against the Cardinals. They beat Plattsburgh in 2009 in Elms and again in 2011 at Plattsburgh. Hopefully a little revenge will be in order for tonight's game.

The Cardinals will be off on Saturday as Elms will meet RPI at 3:00 PM at Plattsburgh's Memorial Hall court.
Then on Sunday Plattsburgh will host RPI in the final game if the 3 team classic at 5:30 PM.

Traveled to Albany on Wednesday night with Coach Curle to take in the debut of Oneonta's Coach Cameron Conover. We knew going down it was going to be a tough outing for the Red Dragons but Coach Curle wanted to be courtside for his former assistant's first game as a head coach.

The Great Danes won the game by a final score of 97-56 but the scholar athletes from Division III hung with the scholarship athletes from Division I for quite a while in the first half and had their moments in the big house.

Glad to see Mikey McElroy block the Great Danes first shot of the game and then a minute later Mikey buried his first shot, a 3 pointer to give the Red Dragons the lead at 3-2. Oneonta hung with the bigger bodies for a good portion of the first half and the lead was still in single digits until Albany scored from the line with 8 minutes left in the period to gain their first double digit lead. The Great Danes slowly and steadily increased their margin until the final score. Albany had a height advantage and they used it repeatedly to score inside as their bigs were also wider and quicker. Of their 97 points scored 62 of them came in the paint, 16 came on free throws and that left only 19 points scored on actual baskets from outside the foul lane. The Great Danes had 5 three pointers and so did Oneonta. The Red Dragons however hoisted up 27 shots from downtown while Albany only attempted 12 shots from long distance. For Oneonta throwing up a bunch of threes was probably their best chance of trying to score in their halfcourt offense, because trying to work the ball inside against the bigger Danes was a struggle. At least they got the shots off from long range but they were heavily contested by the quickness of the Albany players.

I said if the Red Dragons could keep Albany under a hundred points and manage to score 50 points on offense then it was a good outcome. Both of those goals were accomplished. Coach Conover made sure that all of his players got some court time so they could experience playing in the DI atmosphere.

Glad to see Frankie Kelly, who scored 7 points back in uniform for the Red Dragons. I got to see the newcomers in action also as freshman Harrison Deegan went 4-7 with a 3 pointer, to score 9 points in his Oneonta debut.

McElroy led the Red Dragons with 16 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 blocks. Lawrence Coleman added 8 points, 4 boards and a block. Sophmore Myles Joyce led the team with 5 rebounds and freshman Ian Schultz had 4 boards. Another freshman Carson Jacobs scored 5 points in his Red Dragon debut.

Tried to meet with Mikey McElroy and Frankie Kelly after the game but they exited the opposite side of the court from where we were. By the time I got over to the entrance to the locker rooms they were already inside. I did give the freshman Deegan a message to deliver but don't know if it was. We did get to see Coach Conover for a few minutes prior to him addressing his players after the game. I'll have to wait till Friday January 27th to give Mikey my prediction of the game against Plattsburgh.;D

Oneonta opens their regular season tonight against SUNY-Cobleskill at 6:00 PM

GO Red Dragons... win one and give the Coach a victory in his real debut as a head coach. Make it a memorable one. 8-)

All-Time

The Red Dragons will certainly give Head Coach Conover a very memorable 1st win tonight against SUNY Cobleskill
The Red Dragons by 25
Great to see Coach Curle and the Magicman drove to Albany to give Cameron support, that is the Plattsburgh way.
Getting Coach Conover from a fantastic basketball program and a fantastic Coach in Coach Curle can only be a win win situation for the Red Dragons.
I wish the Cardinals and Red Dragons much success this coming season.

Nov. 18

Every team in action tonight except Geneseo. Busy day for me so I'll have to make some quick picks without much info.

Oneonta State vs  SUNY-Cobleskill        6:00 PM   Holiday Inn Classic at Hartwick College

The Red Dragons will find the going a little easier here than they did on Wed night.  Oneonta 78 Cobleskill 60

Hampden-Sydney  vs Brockport State        6:00 PM
Stephanie Tubbs Jones Basketball Tournament @ Cleveland, OH (Case Western Reserve Univ.)

Brockport opens their season as usual on the road. The first of 4 straight non-conference away games. They  take on a tough team from a tough conference, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. I'm taking the Golden Eagles in a close one 75-71.

SUNY-Purchase  vs  Cortland State        6:00 PM   Cortaca Challenge @ Ithaca, N.Y.

These Red Dragons open their season close to home but on a neutral court. I think the defending SUNYAC Champs are in pretty good shape once again. Cortland wins this one by an 80-68 final.

Mount Union vs  Fredonia State        6:00 PM     @ Hilbert College

Fredonia will be up against it as Mount Union, from the strong Ohio Athletic Conference should prove to be the winner here. The Purple Raiders take down the Blue Devils by a 75-66 final. Hope I'm wrong about this one.

Gordon  vs Potsdam State        6:00 PM   North Country Invitational at Clarkson College

Basically a home game for the Bears against a team who whipped Elms College the other night. Elms College is playing Plattsburgh State tonight. Bears are underdogs once again as Gordon returns a lot from last years team. Hope the Bears can win this one but I see them losing another close one 81-75.

New Paltz State at  Allegheny        7:00 PM  Greg Richards Memorial Classic

The Hawks might win one here but until they do I can't pick them. This should be a close game though but I see the Gators beating the Hawks 70-65

Elms  at  Plattsburgh State        7:00 PM  Cardinal Classic

The Blazers are 2-0 against the Cardinals but I think they were better then, than they are now. Cardinals should prevail here by double digits. Plattsburgh 89 Elms 66.

SUNY-Maritime  at  Oswego State        7:30 PM

The Lakers got surprised on Tuesday night. I don't think they get surprised tonight but Maritime did defeat Lehman on Tuesday, a team that was 18-8 a year ago, so anything can happen. I'll take Sortino and his boys by a 78-67 final.

Me.-Fort Kent at Buffalo State        8:00 PM  Buffalo State Coles Classic

I'm picking the Bengals to win and I can guarantee it. Why?...because both teams are called the Bengals. The Maine Bengals own an 80-75 victory over the Division I Maine Black Bears. Now that's scary. Then they beat Delhi 101-74. Yet I see a loss to Berkley College of New York by a 90-75 score. I think the Bengals from New York can take down the ones from Maine. The final score should be Buffalo State 91 Maine-Fort Kent 82.
