BENGALS win, just as Magicman predicted! My BENGALS , of course,  84-67!  In a game that was truly entertaining and undoubtedly attracted the largest crowd of any SUNYAC contest to date! As was noted earlier, UMFK has a D1 victory to their credit and for most of the first half iof game many could see why!  A roster that had more players from California and overseas than the state of Maine!  Thier lack of depth ( only 10 players) was thier downfall tonight though!

5 BENGALS ( The good ones from Buff State), in double figures with 3 double/doubles amongst them ( Mike Henry, Lovell Smith and Jordan Chateau)!  Tomorrow is championship vs Villa Maria!

PS to Magicman!   Nico McLean played tonight ( 10 points)!  ;)

I was wondering when you were going to get around to answering my question. This is how you treat a guy who has always...and I mean always, dropped whatever he was doing and answered YOUR questions in the blink of an eye.

Glad to see he's back. You had me worried and it's not nice to make the magicman worry.

Oneonta State 94 Cobleskill 73

Congratulations to Coach Conover on winning his first game as a Division III coach.

The Red Dragons got a big effort from Mikey McElroy with a double-double that saw him lead all scorers with 24 points and grab rebounding honors as well with 11 boards. He also had 4 assists.

Lawrence Coleman had 19 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.

Jack Kolosky had 14 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 blocks and a steal.

Frankie Kelly had 6 points, 7 reboinds, 6 assists, and 2 steals.

Oneonta was up by 15 points midway through the first half and coasted home from there. The lead was as much as 27 with 14:22 left in the game. Coach Conover got his entire roster into the game as the Red Dragons open their season with a win.

I had Oneonta winning this game by an 18 point margin but my 78-60 score was a bit off from the final score.

Oneonta will face the Keene State Owls on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM. The competition will be a bit tougher as the Owls defeated host Hartwick Friday night 79-63. The Owls won the Little East Conference last year and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament falling to Final Four participant Christopher Newport, 74-62. D3hoops has ranked Keene State at #19 in their preseason Top 25 poll. The Owls are 2-0 on the young season.

Plattsburgh State 126  Elms College 101

All they needed in this game was a starter's pistol, because once it was fired, the track meet was in full swing. I saw sprints, high jumps, long jumps, and hurdles, and when it was over the Cardinals had set a school record for points scored in a single game. The 126 points topped the previous record of 115 points that had been done 4 times in school history with the most recent one occurring on November 29th 1994 at Lyndon State College in Vermont. The score that day was 115-67.

Plattsburgh opened up with a 7-0 lead forcing a 30 second timeout by the Elms coach. The Blazers hit back to back 3 pointers to close the gap to 9-6 but the Cardinals went on a run that had them in front by double figures at 22-12 with 14:18 left in the half. A 3 pointer by Plattsburgh's Eli Bryant created the largest lead of the 1st period at 25-12 and it looked like the Cards were going to run away with the game. The Blazers didn't wilt though, and over the next 7 minutes continued to cut into the lead, until a layup by DeAngelo Cousar, gave Elms the lead at 37-36, with 7:14 to play in the half. The teams would exchange baskets over the next 4 minutes and were still tied at 44 with 3:32 left on the clock. The Cardinals then got consecutive long bombs from Brandon Johnson and Eli Bryant that propelled them to a 53-48 halftime lead.

With 11 turnovers in the first half and only hitting 8 free throws in 20 attempts, the Cardinals had plenty of room for improvement. The Blazers narrowed the gap during the first 3 minutes of the 2nd half and the score was 55-54 with 17:13 left in the period. The Cardinals, with points from 6 different players went on a 16-2 run over the next 3:37, capped by a 3 pointer from Eric Mack, and opened up a 71-56 advantage. Symon Smith, one of the best pure shooters I've seen in DIII the past few years, tried to keep his team in the game but Plattsburgh was on a roll. Brandon Johnson had a steal and a dunk and Mack followed with another 3 pointer and the lead grew to 21. An Elms timeout seemed to slow down the horses as the lead was trimmed to 14, but 5 straight points by Johnson, plus an old fashioned 3 point play from Eli Bryant, and the lead was back to 22 at 94-72 with 7:34 still left in the game. The century mark was a certainty at that point, the question was how high would the score go? Coach Curle made plenty of substitutions at that point but the lead would grow until it reached a 32 point margin at 118-86. The subs kept draining 3 pointers and 13 players hit the scoring column.

Eli Bryant led the Cardinals in scoring with a career high 27 points(10x19 fg,3x9 3's, 4x5 ft). he added 2 rebounds an assist an a steal.

Jon Patron only had 19 minutes of court time but once again scored 20 points. (He opened the season with 26 points on Tuesday night). He also had the first of what promises to be a number of double-doubles with 10 rebounds.

Eric Mack also had a double-double with 18 points(6x9 fg, 4x4 3's, 2x6 ft) and a game high 12 rebounds. He added 4 assists, 3 blocks, and a steal. He was perfect from long distance knocking down all 4 of his attempts.  EMack should just wear a big S on his chest because he can leap tall buildings in a single bound. I kept looking at the floor to see if his shoes were there, because I know he's gonna jump right out them one of these days. His 3 highlight reel blocks got the crowd rockin.

Brandon Johnson scored a career high 21 points(7x13 fg, 3x5 3's, 4x5 ft). He added 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 1 electrifying dunk. Anytime a 5'10' guard has a dunk it's electrifying.8-)

Chris Middleton was the 5th Cardinal in double figures and almost the 3rd one with a double-double. He had 11 points(5x11 fg, 1x3 3's, 0x2 ft) and 9 boards. He also had 5 assists.

Isaiah Hill had 8 points(3x6 fg, 1x2 3's 1x2 ft), 6 rebounds, 1 assist and a block.

Zack Coleman had 5 assists, 4 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.

Plattsburgh shot 50% from the field (46x92), 45.5% from 3 point land (15x33) and a pathetic 52.8% (19x36) from the stripe. They killed Elms on the boards 66-36 and took much better care of the ball the 2nd half (only 5 TO's) finishing with 16 turnovers to 15 for the Blazers.Points in the paint was a telling figure as the Cardinals had 52 and the Blazers only managed 24.

Elms had 4 players in double figures led by silky shooting Symon Smith. The 5'9" guard had 30 points and I wasn't sure if he missed a shot the entire game. Turns out he did as he was 10x13 from the field but was a perfect 6x6 from downtown. He was also a perfect 4x4 from the line. I don't think any of his shots hit one speck of iron...truly nothing but net. 8-) He also led his team in rebounding with 7 boards(Did I mention he was only 5'9"). He also had 5 steals 3 assists and 2 blocks.

Conny Ihearahu tossed in 19 points(7x14 fg, 0x4 3's, 5x6 ft) and grabbed 5 boards.

DeAngelo Cousar and Spencer Douglas both had 12 points for the Blazers.

The team shot 45.6% from the field 36-79, 40% from behind the arc (14x35) and 62.5% from the line (15x24). Normally those numbers are good enough to get you a W, but it wasn't in the Cards Friday night.:D

Plattsburgh will be back in action on Sunday afternoon November 20th at 5:30 to wrap up this year edition of the Cardinal Classic. They will host the Engineers of RPI from Troy NY. This will be the 2nd Liberty League team the Cardinals have played this week.

Elms and RPI will meet later today at 3:00 PM in game 2 of the Cardinal Classic. Elms will be at a disadvantage having had to play on Friday while RPI had the night off.

New Paltz falls to Allegheny College by a score of 72-60.

Nick Paquette with a career high 23 points but the Hawks couldn't get the win. They were in this game until the 7:38 mark of the 2nd period and were only down 50-48 but the Gators pulled away with a 12-3 burst that turned into a double digit lead with 3:30 left to play. The Hawks couldn't recover and dropped to 0-2. Dylan Balducci was the only other New Paltz player in double figures.

The Hawks take on D'Youville on Saturday at 1:00 PM.

Oswego State breaks into the win column as they defeat SUNY-Maritime 104-69.

The Lakers were up by double figures early on and coasted to a 60-38 halftime lead. The 2nd period was more of the same as they were able to empty the bench. 13 players got double digit minutes.

Bryan Sortino leads the way with 19 points and 5 assists. Ian Shupp has 14 points and 4 assists, while freshman Tim Marshall has a big night with 11 points and a team leading 8 rebounds.

Keith Tyson has 8 points 6 boards and a pair of dimes. Mykelle Krecko has 6 rebounds, 5 points, 3blocks and 1 assist. Pat Caruso has 8 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Freshman Brandon Gartland has 8 points, 2 boards an assist and a steal.

The Lakers will take on  the SUNY Canton Kangaroos later on Saturday I'm guessing at 4:00 PM.  Canton defeated Elmira 85-77

Went 8-1 with my 9 picks on Friday, losing only the Cortland game. I'm still shaking my head over that one.
Thought that was one of my safest picks.

Hit all the other games and now stand at 13-3 after 2 days. Close on the New Paltz-Allegheny game, the Potsdam-Gordon game, and my best pick was the Fredonia score. I had it 75-66 in favor of Mt. Union and the final was a 72-64 Purple Raider victory. Not real happy when I'm right and we lose though. :P I want the YAC to win every game but I have to pick them with an open mind. My heart wiggles out on my sleeve enough as it is.

Came close with my margin of victory in the Plattsburgh-Elms game of 23 points. The Cards won by 25. I had Brockport winning a close 75-71 game. They won 84-71. I was right on Hampden-Sydney's score. ;D

Oneonta won by 21 I had them winning by 18.

Happy that I didn't let that win by Maine Fort Kent over Division I Maine University sway my thinking in the Buff State game. I had the Bengals winning by 9 points and they won by 17. If I had known Nico McLean was gonna play for the Bengals ( which a certain Bengals backer clammed up on me) I would have picked the Bengals to win by...you guessed it 17 points. ::)

Nov. 19

Another 9 games on tap today with only Plattsburgh State taking the day off. My Cardinals will be back at it tomorrow along with Geneseo who is just staring their tournament today.

Fredonia State  vs Cazenovia   1:00 PM at Hilbert College   @ Hamburg, N.Y.

Fredonia with a chance to break into the win column here. The Wildcats lost to Hilbert on Friday so this is the consolation game of Hilbert's Tip Off Tournament.  I'll take the Blue Devils to win 74-70.

Villa Maria  at  Buffalo State  6:00 PM  Championship Game of the Coles Classic Tournament

I hate it when A YAC team plays a non D3 team and for the 2nd day in a row the Bengals play a non-D3 team. I think they do it just to P*ss me off. I should pick Villa Maria to P*ss off a certain Bengal Fan and his initials are not LF. But I can't pick Villa Maria cause I love me some Bengals. Beating a York team yesterday by a 101-76 score doesn't impress me. York got beat by D3 New Jersey City on Tuesday by almost 40 points. I'll take the Bengals to win this one in another track meet 102-85.

SUNY Canton  at  Oswego State    4:00 PM Championship Game of the Max Ziel Tournament

Lakers looking to win their own tournament. I think they do. Lakers 86 Canton 73

Potsdam State  vs St. Joseph's (Bklyn)  1:00 PM  North Country Invit'l Consolation game at Clarkson

The Bears may have a chance to break into the win column against the Bears of St. Joseph. Neither team has won a game this year so someone gets off the schneid. I'm picking the Potsdam variety to break out the champagne. Potsdam 75  St Joe's 68.

New Paltz State  vs  D'Youville        1:00 PM    at Allegheny College Tip Off Tournament

The Hawks with a chance to grab a win here. I hate to pick against them when they have a chance for a W. New Paltz 68 D'Youville 64

Oneonta State  vs  Keene State        2:00 PM   Holiday Inn Classic at Hartwick Championship Game

I'd like to take the Red Dragons here despite the fact that the Owls are ranked but I'm scared to do so. Keene returns a lot of talent and has Dizel Wright back this year. He was injured in the 7th game of the season last year and didn't play in the NCAA tournament. He was one of their best players. With him in the lineup I think the Owls will be too much to handle. I'll take Keene State to win by an 83-76 final score. Really hope I'm wrong on this one.

Geneseo State  vs The College of NJ        3:00 PM    at Penn State-Harrisburg Tip-Off Tournament

Tough call on this game. Going with the Knights because Justin Ringen is playing and he shook off the rust on Tuesday. Geneseo 77  TCNJ Lions 72

St. Joseph's (L.I.)  vs  Cortland State        4:00 PM    Cortaca Classic at Ithaca

The Red Dragons can't lose two in a row...can they? Cortland wins this one 88-73

Brockport State at Case Western Reserve 4:00 PM Stephanie T Jones Tournament Championship Game

Brockport looking to win the title here and will press the Spartans from one end to the other. Clifton Lyerly and Hamed Shamseldin will combine for another 50 or so points and that should propel the Golden Eagles to the win. Brockport 90  Case 75

Every now and then it's good to have the Magicman worry.  Not often mind you ( because coach Mark Gross said you took really good care of him last trip).  But once in a great while, keeping the magic 1 on his toes is healthy! May still have another surprise for you too!

Oneonta State falls to Keene State by a 104-90 final score.

The Red Dragons had the lead at the half 56-53 but the Owls outscored them 51-36 in the 2nd period. It was a 5 point game, 92-87 with e:38 left to play but Keene State outscored the Red Dragons 12-3 down the stretch.

Lawrence Coleman led Oneonta with 26 points and 8 rebounds. Mikey McElroy had 18 points and Jack Kolosky had 17 points. Frankie Kelly had 14 points and 9 assists.

Cortland nabs first win with 93-84 homecourt topping of LI St. Joe's. Leads by 12 at intermission behind late half J. Cooper pick-'em-up and extends to 19 about five minutes beyond halftime. Coopers notches 30 pts(8x13fg, 2x4 3s, 12x12ft, 11 reb, 5 assts). M. Kelly 17 pts, C. Joseph 16, J. Morales 14. F. Vasquez with 35 pts for 0-3 St. Joe's which was outmatched Friday by host Ithaca 111-73 in Cortaca tourney contest. Joe's shoot over 50 percent from the field, Corts 46 after slow start. RDragons 25x29ft

Ithaca today nips Purchase 95-93 after giving up 14 pt. lead with 6:35 to go. Purchase ties at 93 on a trey at 0:29. IC works for last shot and gets bucket in close at 0:03 from M. Chasin who finishes 39 pt display on 13x28fg, 6x12 3s in 34'. Chasin eclipses 1,000 career points.
IC 2-1 as is Purchase, which is no slouch, particularly left backcourter B. Berrios. He was a thorn in Cortland bonnet and today notches 28 pts

Cortland next plays Nov. 29 vs. Ithaca

Brockport 90   Case Western Reserve 78

The Golden Eagles defeat the host team to win the Championship game of the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Tournament.

Clifton Lyerly led Port with 24 points. Hamed Shamseldin had 14 points and Marcus Blythers had 13 points. Lyerly and Blythers tied for the team lead in rebounds as they each had 7 boards. Devon Gavin had 9 points and 4 assists.

Brockport improves to 2-0 and will be back in action on Tuesday November 22nd when they continue their road trips and travel to Patchogue, NY to face St Joseph's Long Island. It will be the Battle of Golden Eagles and I like Brockport to stay unbeaten.

Fredonia State 80 Cazenovia 69

The Blue Devils built a 27 point lead and then had to hang on as the Wildcats fought back and closed to within 7 points before Fredonia hit 4 key free throws and a 3 point play by Brandon Hodge to pull away and win by 11 points.

Richard De La Cruz led the way for the Blue Devils with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks and 2 assists. Ian Helps led the way with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block and 1 assist. I guess they both led the way. :D  Brandon Hodge was close behind with 15 points. Dante Williams had 6 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Fredonia is now 1-2  and will return to action on Tuesday when they host D'Youville at 7:00 PM

magicman

D'Youville 87 New Paltz 80

The Hawks had the lead at the half but couldn't break into the win column. Losing this game doesn't bode well for the Hawks. They may be searching for a win for quite some time. Hope I'm wrong but their schedule doesn't get any easier than this game.

Nick Paquette with another big game has 23 points to lead New Paltz. Dylan Balducci hits double figures with 10 points. Kevin Coyle has 8 points and 7 rebounds.

The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday the 22nd when they travel to Middlebury to face the Panthers. That one could be ugly.
