Congrats to John Decker. Not only did he make the uSUNYAC team of the week but today he also made SUNYAC player of the week!  Well deserved!

He also made the D3hoops Team of the Week. Here's what the SUNYAC and D3hoops write up had to say:

John Decker
Decker scored a career-high 41 points, including 6-of-12 3-pointers and 9-of-10 free throws, in the Knights' 103-93 victory at Morrisville, Tuesday. The 41 points tied for the third-highest individual single-game total in program history and was the most points scored by a Knight in 21 seasons.

Go BENGALS ( late night version).

St. Lawrence 91 Plattsburgh State 73

This was a game that mirrors the Skidmore and Middlebury games of last season. The Cardinals almost always have a clunker in the non-conference part of their season and this was (hopefully) the one game that fits that category.

St. Lawrence is a decent team that will give Skidmore a battle in the Liberty League this year, but I think the Thoroughbreds are the better team. The Saints have some shooters, though and if they are hot they can make you pay. And that's what they did to the Cardinals on Tuesday night. They shot almost 50% from the field and had 14 made three pointers. That will usually get you a W.

Plattsburgh had a 7-3 lead and that's the only highlight they had. They quickly fell behind 23-14 due to a half dozen 3 pointers from the Saints 9 minutes into the game. Jon Patron did his best one man show, to keep the Cardinals in contact with the Saints, hitting 9 of 14 shots and scoring 19 first half points but another half dozen 3 pointers, over the next 8 minutes by SLU, and the lead grew to 45-26 and the outcome was becoming quite clear. The Saints were 12 x 23 from downtown in the first half and shot 54% overall from the field.

The 2nd half started with another 3 pointer by SLU and then they managed to get loose inside for layups as the Cardinals tried to press and trap to get back into the game. The lead grew to as much as 27 points and the 3 point attempts the Cardinals threw up to cut into the lead were literally useless as they went 0x12 in the 2nd half from long distance. That was on the heels of a 2x13 performance from behind the arc in the first period. Going 2x25 from distance will probably find you on the short end of a lop sided score most of the time.

SLU had 4 players hit double figures led by 19 points from Willie Zachary and 18 from Kyle Kobis. Kobis added 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Ben Crawford had 12 points and 3 rebounds. Riley Naclerio had 10 points, a team high 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks. Dom DeRegis had 8 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and a steal.
Kyle Edwards had 9 points and 5 assists.

Plattsburgh's Jon Patron just missed another double-double as he had a game high total of 27 points and 9 rebounds. He also led the Cardinals with 3 assists.

Ian Howard was the leading rebounder for the night with a total of 12 boards, 6 on the offensive end. He also had 7 points. Chris Middleton had 9 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.  Freshman Nick DeAngelis finally got medical clearance to play and saw his first action in a Cardinal uniform. He had 10 minutes of court time and scored the first 4 points of his college career. He also had a pair of assists.

Plattsburgh won the rebounding battle 45-43 and also had less turnovers than the Saints did with 8 to SLU's 12. Quite often winning those 2 stats gives you a win. However, SLU not only dominated the shooting stats, but also had 26 assisted field goals (out of 33) to only 12 for Plattsburgh. Overall St. Lawrence was 33x67 from the field (49.3%), 14x32 from long range (43.8%), and 11x18 from the line (61.1%).  Plattsburgh was just 26x74 from the field (35.1%), a possible program worst, 2x25, from 3 point land (8.0%) and 19x25 from the stripe (76.0%).

The Cardinals defense of the 3 point line was one of the worst I've seen from a Tom Curle coached team, since Jake Simmons and Buffalo State went 15x25 back in January of 2012. Last year the Cardinals were one of the top teams in the country defending the 3 point line. Clearly there is work that needs to be done in that area and Plattsburgh only has a chance for a single practice before hopping on a bus to make the long trip west to take on the favored Bengals.

Plattsburgh drops their first game and is now 3-1. They will meet Buffalo State on Friday night at 5:30 PM and then travel to Fredonia  to take on the Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM.

The Saints improve to 4-1 and are now 2-0 in the YAC . They have 2 games remaining against conference foes when they take on Brockport and Oswego next month. They are back in action Friday night when they host a team from the Empire 8 conference and future Liberty League member, Ithaca College. The Bombers already own a win over Skidmore, the team that's favored to repeat as Liberty League Champions once again. This one should be an entertaining contest.

All-Time

The Maqicman must be on a road trip to Buffalo to watch the Buffalo State vs his beloved Cardinals.
Safe Travels

I have Buffalo State beating Plattsburgh in a tough match up.

Potsdam over Fredonia

Geneseo all over New Paltz

And the game of the night Oneonta gets back on the winning track with a thriller over Brockport

Enjoy the Games

Dec. 2 Time to start the real season as 8 teams are in action in tonight's 4 games . All games start at 5:30

New Paltz State   at  Geneseo State        5:30 PM

The Hawks are coming off their first win of the season as they beat Springfield College 64-63 this past Tuesday. Geneseo is 3-1 but has only beat one team with a winning record, Morrisville State, who is 3-2. Morrisville's winning record is against 3 teams that are a combined 2-13.

The Knights have owned New Paltz in the recent decade as they are 9-1 in the last 10 games and 17-3 in the past 10 years. I don't see any reason this trend won't continue. The oddsmakers have made Geneseo a 13 point favorite in this one and that's about right. Final score Geneseo 83 New Paltz 68.

Oneonta State  at  Brockport State        5:30 PM

New  Head Coach Cameron Conover and his Red Dragons face a tough conference opener as they travel west to take on the undefeated Golden Eagles. The teams split the season series last year each winning in the other team's house. The Golden Eagles are 8-2, however, in the past 10 games of the series and are 15-6 over the last 10 years.

Oneonta is 1-3 on the young season but those 3 losses have come against 3 teams that are a combined 13-3 overall. Their last 2 losses were by 2 points to Hartwick on Tuesday night and by an 80-75 score against St. John Fisher the Tuesday before that. With a little luck they could be 3-1. Their other loss was to nationally ranked #13 Keene State by a 104-90 margin.

Brockport will come at the Red Dragons aggressively and in waves as Coach Dunne will employ a 10 to 12 man rotation that all receive double digit minutes on the floor. They won the Case Western reserve championship to open the season and then beat 2 Long Island schools right before Thanksgiving to reach their current 4-0 record. It must be noted that none of the schools have a winning record with an overall combined record of 4-15. And the school with the worst record, 0-5 Old Westbury, is the school that came closest to defeating Brockport as they held a 13 point lead over the Eagles with 1:55 left to play and miraculously allowed Brockport to come all the way back and tie the game up on a pair of field goals from Clifton Lyerly in the final 5 seconds. Yes, that's right, I said a PAIR of field goals in the final 5 seconds. Port then won the game in overtime by going in front by 9 points with a minute left and then holding off a furious rally by Old Westbury, who cut the lead to 1 point with 16 seconds left. So what does all this mean?.... It means anything can happen in tonight's contest.

The point spread is in favor of the home team but only 4 points separates them, according to the oddsmakers. I believe the Golden Eagles have a stronger bench and with the pace of play that Brockport employs, that will prove to be the deciding factor. Oneonta's big 3 of McElroy, Kelly and Coleman can matchup with the Brockport stars but their bench just isn't as deep. Not sure if Brockport will be a bit shorthanded tonight as Hamed Shamseldin their #2 scorer left the last game quite early and didn't return.

I see Brockport winning this game by a final score  of 81-74 as they pull away in the closing minutes.

Potsdam State at    Fredonia State        5:30 PM

The Bears at 1-2, are coming off their first win in almost a year and are looking to start a winning streak of 2 games in the same season for the first time in nearly 4 years. They did win 2 games in a row when they won the last game of the 2013-14 season and the first game of  the 2014-15 season. Previous to that they had a 2 game winning streak back in February of 2013 against Oneonta and Geneseo. It should be noted that the Bears played St Lawrence to open the season and hung with the Saints the entire game losing by a final score of 88-84. So they had a much better outcome than Plattsburgh State did against a common opponent.

Fredonia with a 2-3 record has lost to 3 teams that have a combined overall record of 11-5. Their wins have come against teams that are 1-10. I expected the Blue Devils to be considerably better this year as their players have matured, but losing to Medaille the other day was, I felt, a game they should have won.

The Bears have lost 3 in a row to the Blue Devils and are 3-7 in the last 10 games. They are only 5-12 over the past 10 years. The point spread in this game has been set at a 6 point Fredonia edge. I'm rooting for the Bears but I can't pick them on the road. I see the Blue Devils winning a close game by a 71-68 final score.

Plattsburgh State  at  Buffalo State        5:30 PM

That brings us to the featured game of the night and the week as these two rivals meet up for the first time this year. The Bengals are flying high and come into the game undefeated at 4-0. Their best win was against NAIA Villa Maria as they are averaging over 90 points per game and giving up only 74 ppg. They boast 4 double digit scorers and feature a solid 8 man rotation getting double digit minutes. Smith, Henry and McLean are their big three but they have numerous other guys that can hurt you as well. They will be a handful for any team to defense. The best way to win against these guy is to hope that the rims aren't forgiving and they are kept out late, the night before the game.

Plattsburgh has won the last 6 games in this series and 7 of the last 10. The Cardinals lead the series 13-8 over the past 10 years.

Plattsburgh is coming off a disappointing loss to a team they should have beaten. They were short a starter and their 6th man who gets starter minutes, but still had enough talent to win against the Saints. The bad news is that they didn't have much time to get ready for the Bengals since that loss to SLU. A single practice on Wednesday night, then hop on the bus, gus, and off to the Queen City on Thursday afternoon. They will have their starter back but not sure if their other player has been cleared to play this weekend. He will be missed if he can't play as he is a double digit scorer, 2nd leading rebounder, and best shot blocker.
Plattsburgh is also averaging over 90 points per game (93.8) and giving up 83.3 ppg. They have 4 players scoring in double figures and also have a deep rotation of 9 players with double digit minutes on the court.

The oddsmakers have made the Bengals a slim 1 point favorite in this game which makes it a tossup. I really think the Cardinals are up against it tonight coming off a bad loss to the Saints and having to face this team so quickly. The Bengals also have more senior leadership than the sophomores and freshman the Cardinals are going to throw at them. 7 of the Cards top 10 rotation are freshman or sophomores and the other 3 are  juniors. But I do have red blood and I drink cherry soda so I can't pick the Bengals even though they look to be the best on paper. I'll take my Cardinals and my lumps if necessary and pick them to win by a final score of 91-88.

Plattsburgh leads Buffalo State 49-43 at the half.

The Cardinals trailed 6-2 early on but took the lead on a 14-0 run to go in front 16-6. It was 6 points from Jon Patron, 4 points from Chris Middleton and 4 points from Ian Howard to fuel the outburst. For the rest of the period the lead fluctuated between 5 and a high of 11 points. Down by 9 the Bengals got a hoop and harm from Lovell Smith with 8 seconds left in the half to cut the lead to 6 at the break.

Jon Patron leads the Cards with 12 points and 8 rebounds at the break. Ian Howard has 8 points and 4 rebounds. Chris Middleton has 6 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and a block. Brandon Johnson came off the bench to contribute 8 points and 2 rebounds in 12 minutes. Eric Mack was back in action after missing the St Lawrence game and came off the bench with 8 points and 6 rebounds in just 10 minutes of court time.

Mike Henry leads the Bengals with 12 points and 2 rebounds. Lovell Smith has 9 points and 4 boards. Nico McLean had 8 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists. J.O. Spence came off the bench and scored 7 points in 8 minutes.

If ever there was a true measuring stick  for how far the BENGALS have come, then this Friday, that measuring stick comes to town, wearing black and red!

"That measuring stick" kicked our  a-s tonight!  Plain and simple. Out rebounded by 20 in a game where I truly felt that we had a chance! Give Plattsburgh and coach Curle thier due! No excuses here!! The Cards were the tougher team tonight. Hope my BENGALS learn from this a-S whupping!

I'm betting they do.

Potsdam tomorrow!
