Brockport more than doubles up New Paltz winning by a 98-46 final score

jdex

Oswego over Cortland 61-57 in far from championship caliber outing by either side. Host Lakers shoot 33 percent from the field, RDragons 29 percent. OSt dominates the boards 49-34 with M. Krecko grabbing 13 alongside six blocks. Lakers clutch FTs late after Corts climb within 59-57 on J. Cooper drive.

Lakers expand halftime lead quickly to 37-23 before Dragons' run gets them within single digits. Oswego enjoys five to seven point leads most of the way thereafter. Cortland misses tying 3-point attempt in final seconds. Laker B. Sortino sinks 1 of 2 FT to close out the scoring.

Sortino with 20 points(7x19fg, 4x8 3s), K. Tyson 16 pts, J. Ferebee 10 pts. Cooper heads up Cortland scoring with 18 pts (5x15fg). J. Morales with 11 pts, N. Bonura 13 pts

Plattsburgh State 75  Fredonia State 57 final score.

The Cardinals played a sloppy game with 16 turnovers and shot poorly from behind the arc making only 3 of 18 attempts, but still managed to win by an 18 point margin. They trailed for the first 5 minutes of the game and were down 7-1 but then 7 points from Jon Patron along with 6 more from Eric Mack fueled a 19-2 outburst that carried the Cardinals to a 20-9 double digit lead. The Blue Devils would fight back and close the gap to 22-18, only to have Plattsburgh rip off another 11-1 run that made the score 33-19 with 3:23 remaining in the period. Zack Coleman with 4 points and Patron with 5 led that surge. The Blue Devils managed to get the final 5 points of the half while the Cardinals fumbled their way through the last 2 minutes and gave up a 13 point lead, settling instead for an 8 point advantage at the break.

Fredonia's Ian Helps scored the first basket of the 2nd period and the lead was just 6 points. It would never be that close again. Eli Bryant scored twice and Chris Middleton buried a 3 to ignite a 9-1 spurt that made the score 46-32 and the Cardinals maintained a double digit lead the rest of the game except briefly when Fredonia cut it to 9 points at 50-41 with 11:11 to go. 4 points from Bryant and 3 from Patron, started another 9-0 run that made it 59-41 and this game was over. The Cardinals were never threatened after that. Coach Curle got everyone into the game which kept the final margin under 20 points.

Jon Patron was once again the game's leading scorer and rebounder as he compiled a double-double of 27 points (11x20 fg, 0x3 3's, 5x7 ft) and 13 rebounds (I think he had more boards than that ???). It was his 4th double-double of the young season, a figure that I believe, leads the SUNYAC.

Eric Mack had 15 points (5x10 fg, 1x3 3's, 4x4 ft), 7 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist and a block.

Eli Bryant had 10 points, 3 steals, 2 rebounds, and 1 assist.

Zack Coleman had 6 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds.

Ian Helps led the Blue Devils with 20 points (7x10 fg, 6x13 ft) and completed his double-double with a team high 10 rebounds.

Nicc Johnson had 12 points (4x9 fg, 1x5 3's, 3x4 ft), 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist.

Brandon Hodge had 7 points.

Plattsburgh improves to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC. They are tied with Brockport for first place in the standings. The Cardinals are off until Tuesday December 6th when they host Skidmore College at 7:00 PM

Fredonia drops to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the YAC. They are off until next weekend when they travel to Oswego to take on the Lakers.

Oneonta 89  Geneso 88

The Red Dragons only led in this game one time...but it was the one time that mattered...when the final buzzer sounded.

Geneseo opened the game on an 8-0 run and the Knights went up 14-4 less than 3 minutes into the game on the strength of four 3 pointers. Justin Ringen had 3 of them and John Decker had the other one. Oneonta used a flurry of threeballs to cut into that deficit as Dwayne Freeman, Mikey McElroy, and Jack Kolosky all hit from downtown. The Knights were on top 19-15 after 5 minutes of play. Kevin Crockett got into the act for Geneseo as he nailed a 3 pointer, got fouled on a 3 point attempt and swished 3 from the stripe, and then made another shot from long range. Once more the Knights had a sizable lead at 30-18 and increased their margin to as many as 16 points before settling for an 11 point 48-37 halftime edge.

Oneonta tried to cut into the double digit lead but every time they got it under 10 points, the Knights would respond, usually with a 3 pointer or back to back buckets and the Red Dragons' rally would be short lived. McElroy scored to cut the lead to 7 points at 81-74 but seconds later Crockett scored and was fouled and with 5 minutes left to play the Knights were still in front by 10 points. Still down by 9 with 3:31 left, Freeman scored from downtown and Coleman scored from uptown. The gap was 4 points and the Red Dragons had made it a 2 possession game for the first time since it was 19-15, five minutes into the game.

The Knights called a timeout hoping to regroup but they failed to score on their possession. Oneonta got a layup from Kolosky but Decker was fouled at the other end and made them both to make it 88-84. McElroy got fouled, made 1 of 2 and when the Knights grabbed the rebound with 1:39 to play it didn't look good for the Red Dragons. The Knights came up empty on their possession with 1:16 to play and Oneonta's Frankie Kelly drove to the hoop and scored to make it 88-87 with 1:09 to go. The Knights took another time out and rather than run time off the clock, went for an early score. Decker missed a layup attempt, but got the rebound and Geneseo called another timeout with 45 ticks on the clock. The Knights, looking to inbound the ball when play resumed, were forced to take another time out to avoid a 5 second call. Geneseo wound the clock down but found themselves facing a shot clock violation and the resulting 3 point attempt by Decker was not a good shot and was off the mark. Mikey McElroy secured the biggest rebound of the night and the Red Dragons called a time out with 12 seconds to play.

I've seen this act before, and knew what was coming, as Frankie Kelly inbounded the ball after the time out. He got the return pass, dribbled upcourt and made his move to the hoop. He laid it up and the ball dropped through the net, just like it was supposed to do. There were 3 seconds left to play and Oneonta finally had their lead. The Knights rushed the ball up and let one fly just over the halfcourt line but it was off target and the Oneonta bench began the celebration.

After the game Oneonta's  head coach, Cameron Conover, had this to say. "Wow! That was fun. It's about playing defense and getting stops.  Our guys started playing great defense at the end of the first half. We held them without a field goal for the last 5:38 of the first half. I just told the guys at halftime that if they give that same effort for the next 20 minutes, I'll be proud of them regardless of what the scoreboard says. I also told them that if they give that effort for the whole second half, then we were going to win the game."

I'm not sure if the Coach had them winning in such dramatic fashion but he sure was right about the effort and about the team winning, if the effort was there. The rest of the SUNYAC was served notice on Saturday that the Red Dragons and their coach won't stop playing until the game is over.

The Red Dragons
Lawrence Coleman had a team high 19 points (7x8 fg, 5x8 ft) and a team high 8 rebounds.

Mikey McElroy had 18 points (6x14 fg, 2x3 3's, 4x9 ft) and 6 boards.

Jack Kolosky had a perfect night shooting the rock with  14 points (6x6 fg, 1x1 3's, 1x1 ft), with 5 rebounds, a steal and a block.

Frankie Kelly had 12 points (5x7 fg, 2x2 ft) and most importantly, the final 4 put up on the scoreboard. He also had a game high 8 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Some guy I know said he would have a big game. He must have bought a crystal ball to match mine. 8-)

Dwayne Freeman scored 8 points including a big 3 pointer that made it a 2 possession game in the heart of the Red Dragon comeback.

Freshman Harrison Deegan continues to give Oneonta valuable minutes off the bench. He had 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks and 1 assist in 16 minutes of court time.

The Knights
Kevin Crockett was the leading scorer in the game with 27 points (8x14 fg, 3x6 3's, 8x8 ft). He also had 5 assists and 4 rebounds.

John Decker had 24 points (7x16 fg, 4x10 3's, 6x7 ft), 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block.

Justin Ringen scored 14 points (5x9 fg, 4x5 3's) with 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.

Jack Eisenberg had 6 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds and a block.

CJ Burke had 6 points, 2 assists, 1 rebound and a block in 15 minutes of court time off the bench.

Overall the statistics were fairly close between the teams. Oneonta had an edge in 2 of the 3 shooting categories. The Red Dragons were 33x60 from the field (55.0%),    7x15 from long range (46.7%) and 16x24  (66.7%) from the line.

Geneseo shot  30x60 (50.0%) from the field 13x28  from downtown (46.4%) and 15x17 (88.2%) from the line.

Oneonta had the edge in rebounding 36-27 and turnovers were slightly in favor of the Knights as they had 8 miscues to 9 for Oneonta.

The Red Dragons improve to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC. They will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Oswego State at 5:30 PM.

Geneseo drops to 4-2 overall, 1-1 in the conference. They will travel to Rochester on Tuesday to face the Yellowjackets at 7:00 PM.

Brockport 98  New Paltz 46

The Golden Eagles wasted little time taking control of this game. They scored the first 12 points of the game and when the Hawks cut the lead to 13-6 that was the closest they got all night long. I expected the Eagles to win by a large margin but I didn't expect them to double up the Hawks score.

Brockport's Coach Dunne had his starters on the bench for most of the 2nd half. The last 6 players in his rotation had 77 of the 200 minutes on the floor and they were still outscoring the Hawks.

Five players scored in double figures for Brockport led by Marcus Blythers with a game high 15 points. He just missed a double-double as he also had a game high of 9 rebounds. He also had 3 blocks and 1 assist. He was the only Brockport player with more than 17 minutes of playing time as he logged a team high 22 minutes.

Jacob Peterson scored 14 points and grabbed 3 boards in 14 minutes.

Hamed Shamseldin had 11 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

Devonn Gavin scored 10 points with 2 boards, 2 assists and a steal in 10 minutes on the floor.

Malik Sylla had 10 points and 3 rebounds.

Jake Mitchell filled up the stat sheet with 7 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists, and a block in 17 minutes off the bench.

Cordell Torres had 9 points.7 rebounds and 2 steals.

The Hawks were led by 11 points from James Saunders who also had 2 boards and 2 steals..

Corey Garcia had 8 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist and a steal.

Brockport shot the ball much better than New Paltz, who struggled with accuracy in all three areas. The Golden Eagles man to man, pressure defense, created 31 turnovers that resulted in 32 points. They won the rebounding battle as well by a 54 to 38 margin.

Brockport remains unbeaten with a 6-0 overall record and tied with Plattsburgh State for first place in the SUNYAC standings with a 2-0 record. The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, December 6th when they travel to Hobart to take on the Statesmen at 8:00 PM. They will then head to Northern New York for games at Potsdam and Plattsburgh this coming weekend. Should the Cardinals and Eagles both win their Friday night games they will square off on Saturday afternoon, for an early first place showdown in the SUNYAC.

New Paltz will look to regroup after dropping both conference games over the weekend, as they fall to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the YAC. Next up they host Cortland on Tuesday to take on those Red Dragons at 5:30 PM, followed by a visit from the Oneonta variety of Red Dragons on Saturday December 10th. Sure to be a warm week in New Paltz with all those fire breathers coming to town. Get out the marshmallows. :D

Buffalo State 91  Potsdam State 67

Potsdam tried to make a game of this despite the gap in talent between the two teams. The Bears didn't know they were 17 point dogs against the Bengals, so they came out of the gate, grabbed the early lead and gradually increased it until they were in front by a 27-18 score with 6:41 left in the half. Jayquan Thomas had the hot hand for Potsdam as he scored 13 first half points to lead the Bears. The Bengals were still trailing 33-28 when they scored 11 straight points to grab the lead at 39-33 with 1:48 left in the period. The teams traded free throws and baskets, as the Bengals went into the break up by a 43-38 score.

Buff State wasted little time after intermission to set things right. Lovell Smith scored a layup on their initial possession and Jordan Glover got a steal and followed suit 12 seconds later. Potsdam missed their first shot of the 2nd half and Glover buried a 3 pointer and in 43 seconds the lead had gone from 5 points to 12 at 50-38 and the Bears were calling time out. For the next 6 minutes the lead fluctuated between 10 to 12 points, but the Bears could never get it back to single digits. Up 60 to 50 with 14 minutes left to play, the Bengals blew the game wide open with a 13-0 run over 4 minutes that put them up 73-50 with 10 minutes remaining. The lead grew to 26 as the Bengals got all 15 players into the game and 13 of them hit the scoring column.

Nico McLean was the Bengal's high scorer with 22 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.

J O Spence had 12 points and a team high 6 rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.

Mike Henry had 11 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals.

Lovell Smith had 9 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals and 1 assist.

Freshman Zach Ciezki had 8 points, 3 assists and 3 steals in 15 minutes of court time.

Dante Langley led the Bears and captured scoring honors with 23 points, shooting 9x14 from the field. He added 3 rebounds, 3 steals and a block.

Jayquan Thomas had 13 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist in 22 minutes off the bench.

Danny Delsol-Lowry had 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Kristoff Saunders scored 2 points with the only shot he took, but was the leading rebounder in the game with 9 boards in 20 minutes of court time off the bench.

Nosa Onabor added 8 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and a steal in 11 minutes.

The Bears actually had better shooting stats from long distance and from the line than the Bengals and had a 43-38 edge on rebounds. The Bengals constant pressure was the key factor in the game as they harassed and hurried Potsdam into a season high 35 turnovers. That was more than twice as many as they had in any game this season. The Bengals converted those turnovers into 37 points which accounted for their 24 point margin of victory.

Buffalo State ups their record to 5-1 overall (1-1 SUNYAC) and will be off until next weekend when they travel to Central NY for games against Cortland on Friday and Oswego on Saturday.

The Bears fall to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the YAC. Potsdam will next play crosstown rival Clarkson, as the Golden Knights invade Jerry Welsh Gym in Maxcy Hall, on Tuesday Dec. 6th at 7:30 PM.

Oswego State 61 Cortland State 57

I expected a better effort from both of these teams as the final score was indicative of two teams with offensive liabilities. Yet, coming into this contest, Cortland was averaging nearly 90 ppg. The Lakers have stuggled at times, but were still putting up over 75 ppg. Neither team lived up to those numbers.

Cortland shot 30 % from the field and Oswego wasn't much better at 33.3%. They both were right around 35% from long distance. Cortland was a bit better from the line, 72.2% to 66.7% but the Lakers had 27 foul shots to 18 for the Red Dragons. Oswego made 18 and Cortland sank 13 and there's the point difference in the ballgame.

The Lakers broke on top to grab early leads of 8-2 and 14-7 before the Red Dragon caught them with a Nicky Bonura 3 pointer to tie the game at 20 apiece. It was the only time the game was knotted up and it was as close to a lead as Cortland would get. 15 seconds later Oswego's Brian Sortino drained a 3 pointer to put the Lakers in front for good and a pair of 3's by Sortino and Louis Avellino gave Oswego a 31-23 lead heading into the locker room.

Laker big man, Mykelle Krecko, scored his only points of the game to open the 2nd half and Sortino followed with a layup to bump the lead to 12 points. Five straight missed shots followed and when the Lakers Kieth Tyson hit a pair of free throws, Oswego had their largest lead of the night at 37-23. An 11-2 run by the Red Dragons cut the lead to 39-34 with 14:38 left to play. Over the next 14 minutes and 23 seconds the lead was never greater than 8 points or less than 3. Down by 6 points with 48 seconds left, Cortland cut the lead to 4 after Justin Cooper sank a pair of free throws with 31 seconds on the clock. Cortland called a timeout, the Lakers promptly turned the ball over and Cooper scored on a layup with 15 ticks left to make it 59-57. The Red Dragons immediately foul Ian Schupp who makes the first and misses the 2nd giving Cortland a chance to tie the game with a 3 pointer. James Morales committed the foul that sent Schupp to the line. Morales is the one that corralled the rebound off Schuppp's missed free throw. Morales also takes the game tying shot as the clock winds down, just as he did last year, when he nailed a 3 pointer at the buzzer to beat the Lakers in the SUNYAC championship. Strange how fate has a way of setting things up. Alas, there is no joy in Cortland as this time, Morales' shot is off the mark. The Red Dragons get the offensive board but turn it over before they can get another shot off. Sortino is fouled with 3 seconds left and makes 1 of 2 from the line to secure the victory.

Brian Sortino captures scoring honors with a game high of 20 points. He adds 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

Keith Tyson has 16 points and comes up just shy of a double-double with 9 rebounds. He adds 2 assists, 2 blocks and a steal.

Jamir Ferebee comes off the bench and scores 10 points, has 4 boards and 1 assist in 23 minutes.

Mykelle Krecko only has 2 points but was the leading rebounder in the game with 13 boards and swatted away 6 shots.

Louis Avellino had 6 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists in 25 minutes off the bench.

Cortland was led by 18 points from Justin Cooper. He had 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.

Nicky Bonura had 13 points and a pair of assists off the bench.

James Morales had 11 points, 2 steals , 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 block.

Mike Kelly had 5 points, a team high 8 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist.

Andre Hampton  scored 5 points, grabbed 4 boards and had 1 block.

Oswego had the edge in rebounds because of Krecko's big night off the glass, but Cortland took better care of the ball committing only 8 turnovers to 16 for the Lakers.

Oswego improves to 5-2 (1-0 SUNYAC) and will travel to Oneonta on Tuesday to face more Red Dragons in a 5:30 start. They complete their first half schedule with 2 more conference games against Fredonia and Buffalo State.

Cortland falls to 3-2 overall (0-1) and travels to New Paltz on Tuesday for a 5:30 PM game. They will host the same two teams as the Lakers this weekend and then wrap up their 1st semester with a game at St. John Fisher on December 17th at 4:00 PM.

The latest D3hoops Top 25 Poll was released Monday evening.

Rochester (8-0)  is still the only East Region school in the Top 25. The Yellowjackets  jumped from #18 with 168 points to #11 with 358 points for a gain of 190 points.

Skidmore (5-1)is getting 34 points in the Others Receiving Votes category which would make them #29 if we counted those teams. They increased their total by 10 points over last week.

Brockport (6-0) moves unto the ORV category with 11 points at #40, on the strength of their unbeaten record. They weren't mentioned last week.

Plattsburgh State (5-1) has a 2-1 week and drops from 10 points down to 3 points and a tie for the #45 spot.

Plattsburgh and Skidmore will meet tonight, for the 3rd time in the past 3 years and the game will be in Plattsburgh for the first time. The teams split the first two games so tonight will be the rubber match. Then the Cardinals will face Brockport on Saturday afternoon, for a possible early season battle for the SUNYAC lead.

Skidmore will then travel to Middlebury on Saturday to take on the Panthers. Last year the Thoroughbreds beat Middlebury for the first time in 11 years. The Panthers won't want them to start a winning streak.

Brockport tackles Hobart tonight, on the road, which should prove to be an interesting matchup.

Rochester puts their unbeaten streak on the line as they host a tough Geneseo team led by John Decker and Justin Ringen. With a little luck this could have been a battle of unbeatens as Geneseo lost 2 close games and is 4-2 on the year. Geneseo will then face Plattsburgh on Friday in the Burgh.

With these games on tap this week among the East Region teams there is sure to be some changes in next week's poll.

Don't forget also that Matt Snyder updates his regional ranking data periodically throughout the whole season, as well - his computer model for predicting the Regional Rankings is pretty accurate (at least by February).

Good call thier Ryan. I had no idea that Snyders rankings are out this soon!  Although I must admit I like Massey's 6th place (east) over Snyders ranking (9th) for my Buff State BENGALS!

Here's to hoping that the Cards can handle Skidmore!  Our conference needs this win!

Dec. 6  7 Teams in action in 6 games

Oswego State   at  Oneonta   State     5:30 PM

The Lakers are favored here by a slim 1 point margin. I think they win by 5. 75-70. Hope I'm wrong though.

Cortland State  at New Paltz State        5:30 PM

The Red Dragons win get back into the win column in a big way. Cortland is a 12 point double digit favorite. I think they win by 20. Final score 88-68, Dragons.
