Dec. 6 The rest of the games.  Pressed for time so just some quick picks

Geneseo State  at  Rochester        7:00 PM

Would love to see the Knights take down the Yellowjackets. Nothing like beating the top ranked University Athletic Association team. The oddsmakers have the Yellowjackets favored by 10. I think Ringen and Decker can keep it close but not sure they can win it. Rochester 84 Geneseo 79. Hope I'm wrong and the Knights pull it off.

Skidmore  at  Plattsburgh State        7:00 PM

Featured game of the night. The third meeting between these 2 teams in the last 3 years. Plattsburgh won in overtime down there 2 years ago. Plattsburgh lost down there last year. Tonight's the rubber match and we finally have them on our barn. Oddsmakers favor the Cardinals by 5 points. I have the Cardinals winning by an 85-82 final score.

Brockport State at  Hobart        8:00 PM

The Golden Eagles have won the last 2 years. Hobart last won on Dcember 2nd 2011. The Eagles are favored here by a slim 3 point margin. i think they win by more. Brockport  80 Hobart 71.

Clarkson  at  Potsdam        8:00 PM

Crosstown rivals go at it in the Bears' Den. The Knights are favored by 11 points. I think the Bears will keep it closer than that. The Bears may even pull off the upset. I said may...Clarkson 75  Potsdam 69. I hope I'm wrong.

Plattsburgh State 86  Skidmore 78

The Cardinals and Throughbreds are two of the better teams in the East Region and will be in the running for their respective conference championships. They both could also be in the mix for at large bids to the NCAA tournament, should they fail to win the automatic qualifier. It was tough picking the winner of ths game, so I was happy to see that the final score was fairly close to my predicted 85-82 Cardinal victory. I got my money's worth of action at Memorial Hall on Tuesday night.

The first half was a closely contested affair with several ties and lead changes until Skidmore, up 22-20, went on an 18-7 burst led by 8 points from Edvinus Rupkus and 5 points from Aldin Medunjanin. The Thoroughbreds opened up the largest lead of the game for either team at 40-27. The Cardinals cut the lead to 8 on a Jon Patron layup and 2 free throws from Eli Bryant, but Skidmore worked the final possession of the half, perfectly, to their advantage, as Marcus Jackson hit a short jumper with 3 seconds left on the clock to give the Thoroughbreds a 10 point 42-32 advantage at the break.

Rupkus was the Liberty League's Rookie of the Year last year and he didn't disappoint as he led Skidmore with 16 first half points. Medunjanin, was a D3hoops preseason All American last year as a senior, but went down with a leg injury against Plattsburgh State on November 23rd. He was out until December 28th and started against Ramapo in the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas, but 4 minutes into the 2nd half he reinjured the leg and missed the rest of the season. Because he only played in 5 games, the NCAA granted him a medical redshirt. It was good to see him back and healthy. He scored 7 points in the first half, with 6 assists and 3 rebounds.

The Skidmore coaching staff decided early on, that they weren't going to let Jon Patron beat them. Every time Plattsburgh's go to guy got a pass inside or down low, Mendujanin, who was guarding Patron, immediately got help and Patron was double and sometime triple teamed, usually with help from Skidmore's 6'8" center Marcus Jackson or Rupkus if he was close by. Patron, averaging a double-double this season, only managed 6 points and 4 rebounds in the opening stanza as the Cards were forced to look elsewhere for their points. Eli Bryant hit 4 of 6 shots from the field and led Plattsburgh with 12 points at the break.

The Cardinals needed to cut into that lead early in the half or they risked a repetition of last year's debacle in Saratoga, against this team. With Patron drawing such heavy coverage other players would need to take advantage of Skidmore's collasping defense on him. Slowly Plattsburgh narrowed the gap and got within 7 points on a pair of Chris Middleton free throws with 15:21 left in the game. The Cardinals super sub, Eric Mack, also entered the game at that point and proceeded to fuel a 12-3 run that brought Plattsburgh from a 48-41 deficit to a 53-51 lead with 11:49 remaining. Mack scored 9 of those 12 points as he flew to the rim for a pair of layups, hit a 3 pointer and made a pair from the line when he was hammered on another glide to the rim. It was the Cardinals first lead in over 20 minutes. Rupkus scored to tie the game for Skidmore but Jon Patron grabbed an offensive rebound and laid it back in to regain the lead for Plattsburgh. Two free throws by Eli Bryant and a 3 pointer by Middleton put the Cardinals up by 7 and the Cards had turned the tables on the visitors. It was 60-53 with 9 minutes to go. Skidmore wasn't about to roll over, not with Mendunjanin, Rupkus and Royce Paris to keep them in the game. Those 3 scored the final 25 points that Skidmore put on the board. The lead went from 7 down to 2 but the Throughbreds could never tie the game or regain the lead.

Mendunjanin scored with 1:56 to go to cut the lead to 75-73. But Eli Bryant once again got a big basket when he nailed a 3 pointer to make it a 2 possession game 20 seconds later. On the ensuing Skidmore possession, Eric Mack timed a Mendunjanin pass, intercepted it, and was off to the races as he finished at the rim with a layin, that boosted the margin to 80-73 forcing a Skidmore timeout. Rupkus scored after the time out, but Middleton, Mack and Bryant went 6x6 from the line down the stretch, to close out the Thoroughbreds and claim the rubber match of their 3 game series.

Plattsburgh was led by Eric Mack as he came off the bench and scored a career high 26 points (9x14 fg, 1x4 3's, 7x8 ft). Mack scored 21 of those points in the 2nd half as he seemingly scored at will.  He added 5 rebounds 3 steals and 2 blocks in 26 minutes of court time. It seemed like he had more than 2 blocks. His steal and layup with 1:19 left gave Plattsburgh a 3 possession lead and essentially salted this one away for the Redbirds.

Eli Bryant had 25 points (7x10 fg, 3x4 3's, 8x8 ft) with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. His 3 pointer with a minute and a half to play was huge.

Jon Patron was double teamed all night long and got hammered numerous times with no call. He still managed to score 11 points (5x13 fg, 0x2 3's 1x 2ft) with 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Chris Middleton also had 11 points (1x10 fg, 1x4 3's 8x8 ft) with 3 rebounds, 1 assist and a steal.

Zach Coleman scored 6 points, had 4 assists, 2 rebounds and was all over the court on defense. He usually draws the other team's best player and tonight was no different.

Skidmore got 58 of their 78 points from the 3 guys that have been the foundation of the offense all year.

Edvinas Rupkus came up huge, scoring a game high 33 points (12x18 fg, 3x4 3's, 6x8 ft). He had numerous drives to the basket that were quick and easy. He will be in the conversation for LIberty League Player of the Year.

Aldin Medunjanin had 13 points (6x17 fg, 0x4 3's, 1x1 ft), 8 assists, a game high 6 rebounds, a block and a steal.

Royce Paris had 12 points (4x5 fg, 4x4 ft) with 3 rebounds and 1 assist.

Plattsburgh had 38 rebounds to 29 for Skidmore. The Cardinals also committed fewer turnovers with 9 miscues to 12 for the visitors.

The Cardinals were 26x60 from the field (43.3%) and only 5x22 from behind the arc (22.7%). They had their best shooting performance from the charity stripe since Coach Curle came to Plattsburgh 14 years ago, going  29x33 (87.9%). Plattsburgh had a much better performance shooting the rock in the 2nd half after going just 11x30 from the field and 1x12 from long range in the first period.

Skidmore shot 30x62 (48.4%) from the field, 7x19 (36.8%) from long range and 11x13 (84.6%) from the line.

Plattsburgh improves to 6-1 overall (2-0 SUNYAC) and will host Geneseo, and then Brockport this coming weekend. Both the Knights and the Golden Eagles suffered losses on Tuesday night. The Geneseo game starts at 5:30 PM on Friday evening.

Skidmore falls to 5-2 overall and doesn't begin conference play until after Christmas. They will travel to Middlebury on Saturday Dec.10th to take on the Panthers at 4:00 PM.

Dec. 6  Results

Oswego State   at  Oneonta   State     5:30 PM

The Lakers are favored here by a slim 1 point margin. I think they win by 5. 75-70. Hope I'm wrong though.

Result: I was wrong and happy to be wrong. The final score of Oneonta 73 Oswego 67 was 140 points and close to the 145 I predicted. I had a 5 point margin of victory and the actual MOV was 6.

Cortland State  at New Paltz State        5:30 PM

The Red Dragons win and get back into the win column in a big way. Cortland is a 12 point double digit favorite. I think they win by 20. Final score 88-68, Dragons.

Result: Cortland 77 New Paltz 68. Closer than I thought it would be. I had the Hawks total pegged exactly right. The Red Dragons continue to be a Jekyll and Hyde team. Up by 15 points at 54-39 they allow the Hawks to score 15 straight points and tie the game up. Then they open up a 10-2 run to give them the breathing room they needed to put the Hawks away. That scoring drought of over 4 minutes that allowed the Hawks to tie the game was the Mr. Hyde persona coming out, that cost me a chance at a perfect score. They shoulda had 88 points. :P

Result: Unfortunately I was right about this game as Rochester won a nailbiter, 82-80. I was only 3 points off my predicted score but would have gladly hoped I was way off if the Knights had won the game. John Decker tied Palestra records for 3 pointers made with 9 in 15 attempts and the Knights tied the record for 3's attempted with 41. They made 18 of those 41 attempts. Geneseo had 3 turnovers in their last 4 possessions and their only shot at the basket in the last 1:30 of the game was a 3 point attempt with 1 second on the clock. I don 't know if it was a good shot or a desperation attempt. Decker with 38 points could have used a bit more help but still the Knights have had problems late in the game in all 3 of their losses but especially the last 2.

Skidmore  at  Plattsburgh State        7:00 PM

Featured game of the night. The third meeting between these 2 teams in the last 3 years. Plattsburgh won in overtime down there 2 years ago. Plattsburgh lost down there last year. Tonight's the rubber match and we finally have them in our barn. Oddsmakers favor the Cardinals by 5 points. I have the Cardinals winning by an 85-82 final score.

Result: Cards win 86-78. Close to my prediction on both ends of the score. Happy we won the rubber match and it was a good win for our conference.

Brockport State at  Hobart        8:00 PM

The Golden Eagles have won the last 2 years. Hobart last won on Dcember 2nd 2011. The Eagles are favored here by a slim 3 point margin. I think they win by more. Brockport  80 Hobart 71.

Result: Hobart 65 Brockport 52. The Golden Eagles threw me and my crystal ball a big curve on that one. I'd still take Brockport to win every time if they played the Statesmen 5 more times. Just like I'd take Plattsburgh over St. Lawrence every time. Brockport could barely hit the proverbial broad side of a barn Tuesday night going 19x61 from the field 4x19 from long range and 10x19 from the line. Only one player in double figures and he barely got there with 12 points. Port's 52 points will be a season low for them by at least a dozen markers, I think. You can't win if you don't put the ball through the hoop.

Result: Clarkson wins 74-59. I had the Golden Knights score almost perfect but my Alma Mater couldn't put many points on the board. It's the 2nd time in their last 3 games they failed to score at least 60 points.

All-Time

A couple of tough match-ups on Saturday.
I will start with tonight's games.

Oswego all over Fredonia before they battle with Buffalo State on Saturday.

Plattsburgh over Geneseo before they battle Brockport on Saturday. Can we get a John Ringen sighting? Magicman is he still hurt? His minutes have been very limited John Decker needs his sit kick back, in full strength in order for them to compete for the SUNYAC Title.

Brockport will take their loss to Hobart out on Potsdam. I think every team in the SUNYAC should get the tape of the Hobart game to see how to slow Brockport down.

Buffalo State all over Cortland tonight before their big match-up tomorrow against Oswego

Enjoy the games

Dec. 9  Back to SUNYAC action with 4 games on tap for this evening all starting at 5:30 PM

Fredonia State  at Oswego State        5:30 PM

The Blue Devils haven't fared too well against the Lakers in the past 10 years. They have played each other 18 times and Oswego holds a 15-3 edge in those games. The Lakers have won the last 4 but Fredonia did manage to defeat Oswego 3 years ago when the Blue Devils only won 3 games all season and the Lakers made the playoffs as the 4th seed. Fredonia will upset someone again this year, but I don't think it will be tonight. The Lakers are coming off a loss at Oneonta on Tuesday  and won't want anything resembling a losing streak on their record, at least not at this time. Oswego is favored by 11 points in this one but they haven't been winning games they should win by double digit margins...by double digit margins. I see this closer than the oddsmakers do. Oswgo State 76 Fredonia 68.

Brockport State at  Potsdam State        5:30 PM

The Bears won't get much relief this week as the Golden Eagles and then Geneseo roll into the North Country. Brockport looking to get back into the win column after an ugly loss at Hobart. The loss dumped the Eagles from the undefeated ranks and an early season battle for first place possible tomorrow with Plattsburgh, the Eagles will want to get their high octane offense back on track.

The Bears have lost 3 in a row since their lone win back on Nov. 19th, and they have all been by double digits. The oddsmakers see that trend continuing as they have made the Eagles a 15 point favorite. I hope Potsdam can keep it that close. Brockport 90 Potsdam 69.

Buffalo State  at  Cortland State        5:30 PM Co-Featured Game of the Day

The Bengals and Red Dragons both have a loss in the conference already this year so the loser of this game will fall into the 2nd division of the YAC at least temporarily. Cortland won both meetings last year by a tota of 2 points. Yeah that's not a typo. They won in Buffalo by an 84-83 margin on a last second buzzer beating 3 pointer by JP Reagan just seconds after the Bengals had taken the lead on a jumper by Nico McLean with 8 seconds left. Cortland added insult to injury when they beat the Bengals for a 2nd time by a single point in Cortland. This time the score was 63-62 and the same culprit, JP Reagan, hit 2 free throws with 5 seconds left in the game and the Bengals last ditch effort was off the mark.

The good news for the Bengals is... JP Regan won't be around to beat them this year as he graduated. The bad news is... Cortland has a host of other players that can step in and fill his shoes. The Red Dragons though, as I mentioned earlier on these pages, have been inconsistent from game to game and even half to half. They are coming off a win against New Paltz but didn't really play well against the Hawks. They will need a much better effort if they hope to get into the win column tonight.

The Bengals haven't played since last weekend when they hosted the teams from up north. They are 5-1 and with a bit of luck could be tied for the conference lead after this weekend. They could also find themselves in 8th place with a pair of losses.

After two one point games between these clubs last season the oddsmakers have made the point spread in this game....you guessed it...one point and Buffalo State is the favored team. I think those oddsmakers also feel that without JP Reagan the Bengals will get their turn as a walkoff winner. I don't see it that way. I don't think that Buff State will need a walk off winner tonight, I see them winning a close game though by an 86-81 final score.

Geneseo State  at  Plattsburgh State        5:30 PM  Co-Featured Game of the Day

The Cardinals will have their hands full tonight as the Knights invade Memorial Hall with their talented pair of All Conference players, Justin Ringen and John Decker who were 1st and 2nd team honorees last season. Decker has been on fire this year averaging over 30 points per game, having put up numbers like 32, 41, and most recently 38 points against #11 nationally Rochester University on Tuesday night. A game where the Knights almost knocked off the UAA's top team as they led 80-78 with 1:43 to play beforelosing by a final of 82-80. So we know that Geneseo can play with anybody and they have been able to do that without the usual excellent play of Decker's backcourt mate, Ringen. Ringen had a foot injury and has not been the Justin Ringen of last year that we are used to seeing. His scoring numbers are down, as well as his shooting percentages and minutes on the floor. I expect him to be at or near the Ringen we're accustomed to seeing in tonight's game, however.

Plattsburgh rebounded from their 1 loss on the season with 3 good games in a row and their defeat of Liberty League Champion, Skidmore on Tuesday night shows their ability to overcome a deficit and turn things around, even though this is a young team. The Cardinals will be relying heavily on their triumvirate of Jon Patron, (incidentally a high school teammate of Justin Ringen) Eli Bryant, and Eric Mack. Defensive specialist Zack Coleman, will have the dubious honor of defending Decker (I'm guessing here) and if he can keep him in the low 20's that will be a good job.

The Cardinals won both meetings last year and are 7-3 in the last 10 matchups. The oddsmakers have made Plattsburgh a 9 point favorite but I think it may be a bit closer than that.  Plattsburgh wins by a final score of 87-82.

Cortland sinks Buffalo St. 91-80 at CSt, LEADING BY 22 with just under 10 minutes to play. Bengals several times get within 12 points -- at 73-61 at 7:11 and lastly at 83-71 at 3:01. Dragon J. Morales answers with 3s on the first two occasions. Buffs never close to single digits. RDragons shoot 50 percent from the field, 12x25 in 3s. BS respectable at 41 percent fg, 11x25 3s. Cortland 40-35 rebound advantage, goes 17x22ft and has 13 turnovers -- handling desperate Buff press well for the most part. Bengals 11x15 at the stripe, 10 turnovers. Crowd of over a thousand (including No. 1 Bengal rooter) tunes in on CSt 'Silent Night.'

Decided to make the trek to Cortland today! Another tough 1 tonight. Ran into a hot (50% for the game from the field, 48% from beyond the arc) Red Dragons team. At 1 point down by 20.  Can't remember feeling this down during a game in a looong time!  Give Cortland their credit. They made their shots and free throws that they needed to make. We didnt.

Hoping that my boys are ready for Oswego Lakers tomorrow. Im gonna camp out in the 'cuse tonight and journey over to Laker Hall tomorrow. My God. My boys aint making it to the dance by winning 1 losing 1 winning 1 losing 1. That aint the recipe!

Tomorrow is critical. Need a big win.  I believe in my boys!!

Go BENGALS
