Magic... play detective if necessary... why was Mount St Mary at New Paltz postponed?  It was scheduled for today, was actually postponed yesterday... neither schools' site offers an explanation...

I have a connection who knows the father of a Mount St. Mary's player. He's looking into it for me. d3d3d3's post on the mumps and subsequent link could be the reason though. I also visited both websites earlier looking for an answer, where both, as you mentioned say nothing.

hopefan,
d3d3d3 guess was right, the definitive answer is the MUMPS caused the cancellation of the New Paltz-Mount St. Mary game.

Snowstorms, broken down plow truck, Christmastime at my store. Too many things to do, not enough time to do them. Wanted to do a breakdown of the Plattsburgh State-Brockport State game and time became an issue. Well, better late than never. So here goes.

Brockport 94  Plattsburgh  88

You always get your money's worth when these teams go at it. Last Saturday was no exception. I told the retired sports editor of the local newspaper that if we could hold Clifton Lyerly and Hamed Shamseldin to somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 points we stood a good chance to win the game. If they got 50 between them, which I thought they might, then we were probably in trouble.

The first half was a highly contested affair with both teams taking turns on the lead. The teams were tied 6 times in the first 12 minutes and had an equal number of lead changes. After 12 minutes had gone by the teams had combined for a total of 39 points, as Plattsburgh used two free throws from Eric Mack to tie the contest at 19 each and then go ahead 20-19. The final 8 minutes saw an eruption of 50 points from the 2 teams as the Cardinals behind Mack gradually forged into the largest lead of the game. When freshman Nick DeAngelis made a pair of free throws, Plattsurgh had a 10 point 38-28 advantage with 4:38 left in the period.

Shamseldin made a layup and hit 2 from the stripe to close within 6 points, but Mack got an offensive rebound and a putback dunk, followed by a pair from the line by Brandon Johnson to put the Cards back up by 10 points. A little later the Eagles got 5 quick points from Cordell Torres to once again get within 2 points but  Plattsburgh hit a few more free throws to go into the locker room up by 5 at 37-32.

Hamed Shamseldin wasted little time when play resumed as he scored the first 5 points in the half to knot things up once again. 6 more ties and 5 more lead changes took place as neither team could gain a two possession lead until Brockport forged ahead at 71-67 on the strength of 8 points from Shamseldin and 6 points from Brockport's future, freshman Justin Summers. Plattsburgh came right back with a 10-2 burst led by 6 points from Chris Middleton and they took their first 2 possession lead since the period started, at 77-73. The Golden Eagles would have none of that, however, as Lyerly drained a three pointer, Torres made 2 from the line, Shamseldin hit a jumper, and Torres scored to reel off 9 unanswered points and move back on top 82-77 with 6 and a half minutes left to play. Down the stretch they came. Eric Mack slammed one down for the Cardinals. Justin Summers did the same for the Eagles. Eli Bryant buried a 3 ball to cut the lead once more but Shamseldin made a pair from the stripe and the Eagles were in front 86-82 with 5 minutes to go.

Ian Howard drove to the hoop and scored for the Cardinals. Eric Mack made a pair from the line and the game was tied once more with 3:40 left but it would be the last time the 2 teams were even. Brockport got a layup from their fab freshman, Summers, and the teams then went over 2 minutes with nothing but missed opportunities. Together they missed 7 shots from the field and 4 free throws. Summers ended the scoring drought when he made 1 of 2 from the line with 47 seconds left to make it an 89-86 Brockport lead. Plattsburgh needed to score on their possession and when they missed inside, Ian Howard was called for a foul that was one of the many questionable calls that took place in this game. The Plattsburgh bench argued the call and then was assessed a technical foul. With 4 attempts coming the Eagles only needed to make 2 of them to get a two possession lead and take control of the game. Up 91-86, Plattsburgh misfired on a 3 pointer and had to foul. Brockport closed them out with 3 of 4 from the line.

Clifton Lyerly and Hamed Shamseldin scored 52 points between them. Lyerly had 28 and Shamseldin had 24. They both had 3 triples and both went 7x9 from the line. Lyerly had 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a block. Shamseldin had 3 rebounds and 7 assists.

The new kid on the block was Justin Summers. The 6'5" freshman from New York City had a big game with 22 points and a game high 10 rebounds, both career highs, to complete his first double-double in a Brockport uniform. He was 10x14 from the field, also topping the charts in shooting percentage.

Cordell Torres had 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.

Matt Smith only scored 2 points but filled up the stat sheet with 5 rebounds, 5 steals, 4 assists and a block.

Plattsburgh got another big game from Eric Mack as he came off the bench and scored 24 points. He added 4 rebounds, 3 blocks and 1 assist.

Chris Middleton just missed a double-double as he had 16 points and a team high 9 rebounds.

Jon Patron added 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Brandon Johnson had 8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Ian Howard had 6 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks and 1 assist.

Brockport improves to 8-1 overall and is in sole possession of first place in the SUNYAC with a 4-0 record. They will be off until the New Year arrives when they will travel to Pittsburgh on January 2nd to take on the Carnegie Mellon Tartans at 3:00 PM

Plattsburgh drops to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the YAC. They will return to action on January 3rd when they travel to Hartford Connecticut to take on Trinity College at 5:00 PM.

Dec. 17    Two YAC teams in action today

Cortland State  at  St. John Fisher      3:00 PM  Featured Game of the Week

The Red Dragons are slight underdogs in this matchup as it's hard to beat Fisher at home. The point spread favors the Cardinals by a 5 point margin. I'm taking Cortland and hope they are hitting their outside shots today. Fisher's Keegan Ryan from my hometown will be a load inside. Final score Cortland 82 Fisher 78.

Potsdam State  at   Nazareth      4:00 PM   Lycoming Crosstown Challenge @ Williamsport, Pa.

The Bears have their work cut out for them against the Golden Flyers in this one. Naz already owns a victory over Oswego State. The oddsmakers have made the Bears a 15 point underdog. That sounds about right.... Nazareth 84 Potsdam 67.

Nazareth defeats Potsdam State by a final score of 87-79.

The Bears hung tough and were still in this game with 5 minutes to go. Down by a single point at 67-66 after Jayquan Thomas made a pair of free throws, Potsdam picked a bad time to cool off. The Golden Flyers got a jumper from Tyler Stenglein, and after a Potsdam turnover, Stenglein nailed a 3 pointer and in the space of 30 seconds the lead went from 1 point to 6. Shortly after that Stenglein made a 3 point play with a hoop and harm to stretch the lead to 8 points.Thomas scored 10 points for the Bears in the final 2 minutes but Nazareth hit 10 of 12 from the line in that span to close out Potsdam.

Potsdam got a big game from Jayquan Thomas, the game's high scorer with 33 points, as he was 12x16 from the field and 9x9 from the line. He added 4 rebounds and 4 steals.

Serigne Kane had 14 points, 8 rebounds and a block.

Nosa Onabor dropped in 13 points, with 2 steals, 2 rebounds, 1 assist and a block.

Nazareth had 5 players hit double figures led by Tyler Stenglein with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Cody Green had 16 points. Jake Burgio had 15 points and 6 rebounds. Josh Gillard had 12 points and 5 rebounds.
Brendan Wind had 11 points and 7 assists.

Nazareth improves to 5-3 and will return to action on January 4th against Hilbert at 8:00 PM.

The Bears fall to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in the conference. The road doesn't get any easier for Potsdam as tomorrow they will play the host school in this 3 team tournament, Lycoming College. The Warriors played Nazareth on Friday and defeated the Golden Flyers 86-78. That's pretty close to what the score was of today's game between Potsdam and Naz. Lycoming opened the season with an 80-66 win over Fredonia.

The Bears will be at least a 20 point underdog in tomorrow's contest, which will tip off at 1:00 PM.

Dec. 18  Two games on tap today for SUNYAC teams.

Potsdam State  at  Lycoming     1:00 PM    Lycoming Crosstown Challenge @ Williamsport, Pa.

Lycoming, a school in the Middle Atlantic Conference-Commonwealth Division, is 9-1 with their only defeat a 75-74 loss, coming at the hands of Susquehanna (7-1) who is the #18th ranked team in D3hoops Top 25.  Lycoming is currently getting 27 points in the Others Receiving Votes category which puts them in the #32 spot. If they had won that game against Susquehanna they would be undefeated and probably in the Top 25. They return just about everyone from an NCAA team of a year ago. They own wins over Fredonia and Nazareth, two teams that have already beaten Potsdam.

The oddsmakers have made Lycoming a 24 point favorite. It will be tough for the Bears to beat that spread. The Warriors win this one 92-70.

Buffalo State vs Eastern Connecticut    6:00 PM  Holiday Shootout @ Miami, Florida

Interesting matchup between 2 schools that should both compete for playoff spots in their respective conferences. Also note that both SUNYAC schools today, are playing teams with the same nickname. Eastern Connecticut is also called the Warriors. These Warriors have played against the SUNYAC in 6 games over the past 5 years compiling a 4-2 record. They have wins in the regular season against New Paltz (twice) and Oneonta (once) and beat Oswego in double overtime in the NCAA tournament back on March 3rd 2012. They lost to the Bengals in a holiday tournament several years ago on Decemeber 21st, 2012 by an 89-85 final score. Plattsburgh State beat them in the NCAA playoffs 80-70 on March 8th 2014, which is the last time they played a team from the YAC.

They come into this game with a 4-4 record, but all 4 losses have been to teams with winning records. They have lost to WPI (7-2), Middlebury (7-1), Williams (8-1) and Connecticut College (7-1). If you're counting, that's a combined 29-5 record.

The Bengals with a 5-3 record, have all their losses to teams with winning records also. Plattsburgh, Oswego and Cortland have beaten the Bengals but every one of those games could easily have went in the other direction.

The oddsmakers have made the Warriors a slim 2 point favorite on a neutral court. They like to play an up tempo game. That should fit right in with what the Bengals want to do. Get out your PF Flyers, this one will be a track meet. I'm taking Buffalo State to get to the finish line first. Bengals 93 Warriors 87.

Potsdam State loses to Lycoming 86-64.

I  was close with my 92-70 prediction of a Lycoming win and my 22 point MOV was right on as the Bears managed to beat the oddsmakers point spread.

Potsdam hung with the Warriors through the midway point of the first half and were tied with the hosts at 15 apiece with 11 minutes to play. A 9-0 run put Lycoming up 24-15 but the Bears scored 6 straight points to narrow the gap to 24-21 with 8:11 to go. The Warriors then used a 16-2 outburst over the next 6+ minutes to basically put the game away. They increased their lead to 17 points and were up 40-23 with 1:42 left in the period. They carried a 15 point lead into the break, up 44-29.

The Bears needed to cut into that deficit quickly in the 2nd half  to have a chance at a win. Unfortunately it was the Warriors who put the first 5 points on the board and the lead was 20 at 49-29. it only got worse from there. Lycoming, up 49-34, put together a 25-4 run and the lead was a game high 36 points, with 10:47 to go at 74-38. The benches were emptied and the Bears cut the final margin to 22.

Serigne Kane led the Bears with 16 points and a game high 9 rebounds.

Dante Langley had 13 points and 5 rebounds.

The Bears fall to 1-9 and will return to action on January 6th when they host Buffalo State at 5:30 PM.

Lycoming had 4 players in double figures led by Nyk King with a game high 17 points and TJ Duckett with 14. The Warriors are now 10-1 for the season.

Trying to watch the Buffalo State-Eastern Connecticut game on a video link provided by Eastern University. There is no announcer, or sound of any kind. Just complete silence. It looks like Buffalo State is winning but since there is no onscreen score I have no way of knowing who is ahead. In fact I have no idea how much time is left and even if it's the first half or the second. You would think that during a time out the camera operator would flash to a close up of the scoreboard. But then, that would make sense and apparently the guy handling the camera doesn't have that attribute. I've been watching for 20 minutes and not a single glimpse of the scoreboard other than a blurry long distance shot as the teams run up and down the court. And wow are they running up and down the court. It is a track meet as I suggested it would be.

I can see what looks like a 50 something to 40 something score with the Bengals being the one with the 50's.

Just saw the Bengals Mike Henry make a free throw and the scoreboard turned into what looks like 60. Then the Bengals got a couple of baskets and I could see that they went to 62 then 64. Eastern Connecticut scored and they went to 51.  Watched for a few more minutes and the score at this point is 66-56 with the Bengals up by 10. No idea of course how much time is left.

Went to the Bengals website and found a link for live stats. Didn't think there was a live stats link since the D3hoop scoreboard only showed a video link.

Bengals up 74-66 with only 29 seconds left to play. Time to light the victory cigar.

Buffalo State 76 Eastern Connecticut 68 final score

The final score was below the projections I had for two teams that love to run up and down the court about as fast as you can. I had Buffalo State winning this one by 6 points and they won by 8. That part of my prediction was pretty close. If the teams had played the first half like they played the 2nd half, my prediction of a 93-87 Buff State win would have been right on. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it)

Neither team put up big numbers in the first half as the Bengals came out of the gate slowly and fell behind the Warriors 10-2 over the first few minutes of the game. They trailed by double digits, 22-10, with 11:11 left in the half after the Warriors' Hugh Lindo got a breakaway dunk off a Bengal turnover and then Lindo followed that up with a layup after Buff State missed on their end. The Bengals finally woke up with a 14-2 run, fueled by 4 points from Jordan Chateau, 5 points from Dom Grayer and 4 points from Lovell Smith. His steal and dunk at 6:46 tied the game for the first time. Three ties and three lead changes would take place in the final few minutes  of the half and it was the Bengals who were in front when the buzzer sounded. Chateau had a dunk to tie the game at 30 and Smith followed that act with a another dunk. Mike Henry scored on a layup to extend the lead to 4 points, 34-30.

After working so hard to get the lead the Bengals weren't about let the Warriors regain the advantage.  They maintained their cushion and up by 5 at 42-37, they got back to back 3 pointers from Grayer and Jordan Glover to give them their first double digit lead. Henry added a layup and the score was 50-37 with 14:35 to go. Several times the Warriors would get it back to single digits but the Bengals were there on each occasion  to build it up again. Up by 7 points after a Warrior attempt to come back, Buff State got another trifecta from Grayer, a layup from Smith, a free throw from Henry and a dunk by Chateau. Henry and Smith then got layups inside and the lead was 15 points at 66-51, the largest of the game.

The Warrior weren't done, though and they outscored Buff State 13-4 over the next 3 minutes to cut that lead to a 2 possession game at 70-64 with 2:10 left in the game. The Bengals went 4 for 4 on two trips to the line that sandwiched a layup from Chateau to hold the Warriors at bay.

Jordan Chateau came off the bench to lead the Bengals with a game high 19 points (8x11 fg, 3x5 ft) and a team high 10 rebounds to claim his 2nd double-double of the season. The "Big House" also had 3 blocks in 28 minutes of court time.

Dom Grayer also came of the bench to score 19 points (5x10 fg, 4x7 3's, 5x7 ft) with 3 rebounds and 2 assists, in 25 minutes on the floor.

Lovell Smith had 15 points (6x14 fg, 3x4 ft), 8 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.

Mike Henry also had 15 points (7x14 fg, 9x4 3's, 1x3 ft), 6 steals and 3 rebounds.

Jordan Glover had 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 points, and 2 steals.

Buffalo State improves to 6-3 overall (1-3 YAC) and will take on the  Alvernia Crusdaders from the Middle Atlantic Conference-Commonwealth Division (MACC) on Monday afternoon at 4:00 PM. Alvernia is currently 5-3 overall and just lost a close game to the team Potsdam played earlier on Sunday, Lycoming College by an 86-85 score.

Eastern Connecticut had 3 players score in double figures led by Tarchee Brown with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist.

David Canny had 17 points, 4 rebounds, 2 blocks and 1 assist.

Hugh Lindo had a double-double of 16 points and a game high 14 rebounds. He added 2 assists, 2 steals and a block.

The Warriors fall to 4-5 on the year and will play Eastern University on Monday evening at 8:00 PM.

Saturday December 17th Cortland State 79  St. John Fisher 69

Not far off from my prediction of an 82-78 Cortland victory.

Cortland had several early leads, but it was the Cardinals that would open up the biggest lead in the first half as they broke an 8-8 tie with a 13-6 burst that had them in front 21-14 with 8 minutes gone in the period. 5 points each from James Morales and Andre Hampton kept the Red Dragons close and then back to back layups from Mike Kelly got them even with Fisher at 32 each with 5 and a half minutes to play. Kelly continued his one man run as he made it 9 straight Cortland points with another layup and a 3 pointer on their next 2 possessions. Suddenly the Red Dragons were in front by 5 points and they never trailed for the rest of the game. They traded  baskets with the Cardinals and went into the locker room up 42-37 at the half.

Cortland scored first in the 2nd half on a three point play by Justin Cooper and the Red Dragons maintained at least a 2 possession edge for the next 14 minutes of play. Fisher made a move when they were down 63-55 and a 10-4 spurt brought them back within 2 points at 67-65 with 6:44 to go. Two free throws from James Morales and a 3 pointer from Andre Hampton built it back to a 3 possession lead at 72-65. The teams traded layups and then the Cardinals missed their next two shots. They followed that with 2 turnovers and now with under a minute to go, the Cardinals had to foul. Cortland made 5 of 6 down the stretch to make the final score a 10 point margin.

Justin Cooper had a double -double with a game high 20 points (5x11 fg, 2x4 3's, 8x9 ft), and a game high 12 rebounds. He also added a game high 5 assists. It was his 5th double-double of the season.

James Morales equaled the game high of 20 points (7x14 fg, 3x7 3's, 3x6). He added 4 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists, and a block.

Andre Hampton had 13 points (4x5 fg, 3x4 3's, 2x2 ft) and 6 rebounds off the bench in 17 minutes on the floor.

Mike Kelly had 11 points (5x8 fg, 1x3 3's), 2 rebounds and a steal.

Zach Lydon had 7 points, 3 rebounds and 3 blocks in 16 minutes off the bench.

Keegan Ryan led St. John Fisher with 17 points and 9 rebounds.

Sammy Robinson had 11 points and Tyler English had 10.

Cortland improves to 7-2 overall (3-1 YAC) and will return to action against Widener University of the MACC conference in the opening round of the Johns Hopkins Blue Jay Invitational on Monday, January 2, at 1 p.m. in Baltimore. Widener will be the 3rd different team from that conference to play a SUNYAC  team this season. Lycoming (Potsdam and Fredonia twice) and Alvernia (Buffalo State on Monday 12-19) are the other two teams from the MACC to play YAC teams.

St. John Fisher falls to 4-3 and will return to action when they host Colby-Sawyer College on December 29th at 8:00 PM.
