5 Games on Tap Today in the SUNYAC

The Featured game of the day is Plattsburgh against Geneseo.
Can the Cardinals get out of their funk this afternoon? I certainly hope so.
Can someone tell me whats happening with Jon Patron? He started the season on fire and seems to be in the Dog House.
I think he gets out today and has a big game, and the Cardinals beat the Knights in a barn burner.

My Oneonta Red Dragons come back today and beat a tough Fredonia team in that warehouse that they play in.
Look for the Red Dragons to celebrate the birth of Coach Conover baby boy by beating Fredonia by double digits.

Oswego over Cortland
Brockport all over Potsdam
Buffalo State all over New Platz

Enjoy the games

Fredonia State defeats New Paltz 82-68.

The Blue Devils needed to win this game to keep their hands on a share of the 6th and final playoff spot but the Hawks weren't going to roll over. The first half was a tightly contested affair with 8 ties and 7 lead changes that eventually had Fredonia heading to the break with a 32-28 lead. The teams were tied at 9, when the Blue Devils reeled off 7 straight points, and it looked like New Paltz was in the familiar position of going down by double digits, but a 12-3 run put them in the lead at 21-19, with 6:19 to play. The Hawks were still up 28-26 with under 2 minutes to play in the period but Fredonia scored the final 6 points, to go in front at halftime.

The Blue Devils looked to be in control once again as they opened the 2nd half with a 10-3 run, to go up by a 42-31 score with 17:15 on the clock. Once again the Hawks responded in a big way by ripping off a 15-3 burst, that brought them back into the lead at 46-45 with 12:11 to play. Andrew Seniuk with 7 points and Dylan Balducci with 2 buckets from long distance fueled that run. In a game of runs, it was now the Blue Devils' turn and they wasted no time in putting 14 unanswered points on the board. 4 points each from Ian Helps and Justin Tapper, plus a pair of 3 pointers from Richard De La Cruz, did the damage. The score was 59-46 with 6:23 left in the game and it effectively ended the Hawks hopes of gaining their first conference win. The closest they got was 8 points and the lead then swelled to 15 points. In the final 1:16 Fredonia made 8 trips to the line and hit 15 of 17 free throws to make the final margin of 14 points.

Fredonia shot the rock a little better from the field hitting 23x53 (43.4%) to 26x67 (38.8%) for the Hawks. New Paltz was able to hang around on the strength of their 3 point shooting which saw them make 11x21 (52.4%) from downtown. Fredonia only had 5x13 from long range (38.5%). The stripe saw a big discrepancy with the Blue Devils making 31x37 (83.8%) from the line to just 5x8 (62.5%) for the Hawks. Even if you take away the final 15 made free throws that Fredonia had in the closing stages of the contest, they still had a 16 to 5 advantage which is almost the MOV. Hard to win games, even when you're hot from behind the arc, when the free throw numbers are so one sided. The Hawks lost the rebounding battle by a wide margin 46-31, but only had 11 turnovers to 14 for Fredonia.

Fredonia
Ian Helps had a double-double with a team high 20 points and a game high 13 rebounds.

Dante Williams also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Richard De La Cruz had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and a block.

Justin Tapper had 10 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists in 20 minutes off the bench.

Kareem Brown also hit double figures with 10 points.

New Paltz
Dylan Balducci came off the bench and captured scoring honors with 23 points, a team high 7 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. He was on fire from deep space as he hit 7 of 11 shots from 3 point range. He must have had his foot on the line for the other field goal he made. :D

Andrew Seniuk had 15 points, also 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and a block.

Fredonia improves to 8-9 and 5-5 in the YAC. They remain tied with Buffalo State for the final playoff spot and will host Oneonta State at 2:00 PM on Saturday.

New Paltz is now 1-14 and 0-9 in the conference. Their journey doesn't get any easier as they travel over to the Sports Arena to face Buffalo State at 2:00 PM on Saturday. They did upset the Bengals last year but that was in New Paltz. It will be tough to pull a repeat in the Queen City.

Geneseo State defeats Potsdam State by an 80-60 final score.

If you told me that Justin Ringen and John Decker would each score 3 points in this game then I would have bet a fair amount of money that the Knights were upset by the Bears. I would have bet an even larger amount of money that the Knights wouldn't win the game by 20 points if they did manage to pull off a victory with their top pair only combining for 6 points. This game showed that the Knights aren't just the R&D show.

The Bears opened the game with a 3 pointer from Nosa Onabor to grab their only lead. The Knight's CJ Burke responded with back to back 3 pointers, and after Serigne Kane tied the score with a threeball, Burke struck again from long distance and the Knights were on their way. Onabor hit a jumper to make it 9-8, but the Knights went on a 15-3 run to open up a 13 point lead at 24-11 with 11 minutes left in the half. 6 different players scored in that 15 point barrage and the lead reached 16 points when Burke buried another 3 pointer to make it 37-21 en route to a 42-27 halftime lead. Potsdam could never get it back to single digits.

The Bears did make a move when they were down 61-40 and scored 10 straight points to cut the margin to 11, at 61-50. The Knights' Jack Manke, who hails from Ogdensburg, just down the road from Potsdam, chose to show the North Country fellows his game, as he scored the next 7 points in the contest, to build the lead back to 18 at 68-50. He followed that up with 3 more baskets to make it 75-56 with 4 minutes left, to dispel any hope of a Potsdam comeback. This one was over and the only question would be how big the MOV would be. I said the Bears would beat the 22 point spread imposed by the oddsmakers. I had them losing by a 94-74 final. The final ended up 80-60 but correctly, right on the 20 point MOV I predicted.

Geneseo
Sophomore CJ Burke captured scoring honors with a career high 20 point night on 7x11 shooting which included 5 of 7 from downtown. He added a game high 6 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a block.

Fellow sophomore Jack Manke also had a career high with 17 points. He was 7x9 from the field and 3x3 from the line. He added 5 rebounds 2 blocks and 1 assist.

Kevin Crockett had 9 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

Tommy Eastman had 8 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists in 11 minutes off the bench.

Potsdam
Nosa Onabor had 15 points to lead the Bears. He was 3x7 from long distance and had 2 rebounds and a steal.

Serigne Kane scored 12 points and also matched the game high of 6 rebounds. He added 2 blocks and 1 assist.

Jayquan Thomas had 10 points 3 rebounds, 1 assist and a steal.

Al Berete had 8 points, 3 blocks, 2 rebounds and 1 assist in 18 minutes off the bench.

Geneseo ups their overall record to 11-5 and moves into a 3 way tie for third place with a 6-3 conference mark. They will host Plattsburgh State at 2:00 PM on Saturday.

Potsdam drops to 1-14 overall and 0-9 in the YAC. They will travel over to Brockport for a 2:00 PM Saturday afternoon game as well.

Brockport State defeats Plattsburgh State 96-87

Brockport opened the second half with an 11-2 run which turned out to be the decisive move of the game as the Cardinals could never get closer than 6 points the rest of the way. The entire first half was a closely contested affair that featured 6 ties and 12 lead changes with neither team leading by more than 4 points. The teams went into the locker room with the Eagles in front 43-41. The 2nd half was virtually the same except for that brief explosion by Brockport.

The Golden Eagles opened the 2nd period with a tip in by Marcus Blythers but that was countered by Plattsburgh, when Eric Mack tipped one in for the Cardinals, to narrow the lead to 45-43, with just a minute gone by. That was the last time that Plattsburgh was a single possession from the lead. Brockport's two scoring leaders took turns, as Clifton Lyerly hit a jumper and then Hamed Shamseldin made a pair of free throws. Lyerly hit another jumper on Brockport's next possession and Shamseldin buried a three ball after a Cardinal turnover. The score was 54-43 with 17 minutes left to play. The Cardinals outscored the Eagles  44-42 over the rest of the period but could never put together a run to catch up. They made a move with 4 minutes left to play and the Eagles in front by an 86-74 score. A layup and a 3 pointer by Eric Mack along with a pair of free throws from Chris Middleton gave the Cards a 7-1 spurt that brought them within 6 points at 87-81. Brockport took a quick timeout and the Cardinals had a chance to cut the lead to a single possession after the Eagles missed a shot on their end, but Plattsburgh turned it over and Devonn Gavin made them pay when he buried a triple. The Cardinals missed on their next attempt and Lyerly cashed in on a pair from the line. The lead was back to 11, there was 1:40 left on the clock and this one was history.

I knew it was not going to be a good night for the Cardinals when starter Eric Mack, was called for 2 fouls and was on the bench, before the game was even 30 seconds old. So, our second leading scorer and rebounder sat the entire first half. Then he was back on the floor to start the 2nd half and a minute and a half into the period he is called for a 3rd foul. Fourteen seconds later he is called for a 4th foul and back to the bench he goes. He didn't re-enter the game until there was 8:38 left on the clock. He managed to play the remainder of the game without fouling out. His time on the court was a total of 10 minutes.

Our leading scorer and rebounder Jon Patron didn't fare much better. He got 2 early fouls and only managed to play 5 minutes in the first half. He had the same problem in the second half and when he got his 4th foul he protested a little too much and was hit with a technical and his night was done. his time on the court was 13 minutes. We got a total of 23 minutes of court time from our two leading scorers instead of the 50 to 60 minutes we should have gotten. Hard to win games when your best players aren't playing.

Brockport
Brockport got a huge night from Clifton Lyerly who led all scorers with 37 points (11x25 fg, 3x8 3's, 12x13 ft). He had 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals.

Hamed Shamseldin had 22 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and a steal.

David Clark had 13 points, 3 boards and a block.

Marcus Blythers had a team high 9 rebounds, 8 points and 2 blocks.

Plattsburgh
The Cardinals were led by Eli Bryant with 20 points on 7x16 shooting. He added 4 assists and a steal in 31 minutes off the bench.

Chris Middleton had 16 points, 5 rebounds 1 assist and a steal.

Eric Mack scored 15 points (4x4 fg, 1x2 3's, 6x7 ft), and grabbed 5 rebounds. He only got to play for 10 minutes because of foul trouble or he might have challenged for scoring and rebounding honors.

Isaiah Hill had 13 points and 7 rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench.

Ian Howard had a game high 13 rebounds, to go with 8 points and a block.

Adam Jaquish had 7 rebounds 2 points and a block in 10 minutes off the bench.

Most of the stats in this game were fairly even. Brockport had a slight advantage in shooting as they hit 43.2% (32x74) from the field to 38.8% (31x80) for Plattsburgh. The Golden Eagles hit 3 more shots from long range (7x24) than the Cardinals did (4x23) and Brockport went 25x33 from the line (75.8%) to 21x23 (91.3%) for Plattsburgh. Rebounds went to Plattsburgh but only by a 49-48 margin. The Golden Eagles had 18 turnovers to 19 for the Cardinals.

Brockport improves their record to 13-3 overall and their 8-1 conference record moves them back into a first place tie with Oswego. That tie could be broken tomorrow as Brockport hosts Potsdam at 2:00 PM and should prevail against the last place team. Meanwhile Oswego travels to Cortland  and the Red Dragons will be looking to avenge a close loss from early December in Oswego. If both teams win tomorrow that will set up a big showdown when Brockport travels to Oswego next Friday for the first meeting of the season between the two teams.

Plattsburgh continues to slide downhill as they fall to 6-9 overall and just 2-7 in the conference. It won't get any easier as they will have to contend with Geneseo tomorrow at 2:00 PM. The dynamic duo of the Knights, Ringen and Decker, managed to score a whopping 6 points between them on Friday against Potsdam (they each had 3 points) so you know they will probably explode for 50 to 60 points on Saturday.

Buffalo State defeats Oneonta State by a 101-94 final score.

The featured game of the day didn't disappoint as these teams went at each other tooth and nail in a fast paced contest that featured two potent, offensive minded teams. Early play had a steady diet of drives to the basket and neither team could get more than a two possession lead until a Dom Grayer 3 pointer put the Bengals up 28-21 at the 12:30 mark. Oneonta's Mikey McElroy answered that with his own long range bomb and a short time later another McElroy 3 pointer tied the score at 29. The teams exchanged layups for a 4th tie at 31 each to match the 4 lead changes in the period but the Bengals, up 34-33 with 8:46 left in the half, would open up some daylight with a 21-9 run that put them ahead by 13 points at 55-42 with 3:31 to play. Mike Henry was the horse they rode as he scored 14 of those 21 points during that 5 minute stretch. The Red Dragons closed the half on a 7-1 spurt to make the score at the intermission 58-49.

The Bengals continued to lead by 7 to 11 points for much of the 2nd half and when Oneonta got as close as 3 points after McElroy hit another triple and Jack Kolosky made a pair of free throws, the Bengals responded with a Jordan Glover 3 pointer and a pair of layups from Lovell Smith to build the lead right back to double digits at 83-73 with 8:26 left to play. Slowly the Red Dragons made some gains and led by the hot hand of McElroy, who scored 10 of their next 15 points,  they closed the gap to 90-88, when he buried his 5th triple of the night with 2:38 left to play. The Bengals came up empty on their next possession as McElroy blocked a shot and Frankie Kelly got the rebound and was fouled. He missed both free throws but made up for it by stealing the ball and scoring to tie the score at 90 setting the stage for the final 1:43. The Bengals were starting to feel the game slipping away but Nico McLean was fouled and made both free throws to put them back in front. Oneonta needed to keep pace but missed a layup on their end and Mike Henry hit the biggest shot of the night, his 2nd three pointer with 42 ticks left to put the Bengals up by 2 possessions at 95-90. Kelly went to the line for Oneonta and made 2 free throws and the Red Dragons had to foul. What looked to be a break when the Bengals missed both shots from the line turned out to be a bad break, as J.O. Spence collared the rebound for Buff State and Oneonta had to foul him with just 26 seconds remaining. He made 1 of 2 to make it a 2 possession game again and the Red Dragons rushed downcourt to try and score inside. The layup bounced out and they fouled again. Buffalo State ended up making 3 more trips to the line making 5 of 6 to make the final score 101-94.

The shooting stats in this game were fairly close as the Bengals were 38x72 (52.8%) from the field, 7x20 (35%) from behind the arc and 18x26 (69.2%) from the line.  Oneonta was 35x64 (54.7%) from the field,
8x15 (53.3%) from downtown and 16x22 (72.7%) from the stripe.

Oneonta ruled the boards as they grabbed 42 rebounds to 28 for the Bengals, but that didn't translate into more 2nd chance points for the Red Dragons as Buffalo State led that stat, 14 to 13. The Bengals won the turnover battle in a big way as they only had 7 miscues to 20 for Oneonta. Buff State got 36 points off those turnovers to only 10 points that Oneonta received from the Bengals' mistakes.

The Bengals
Lovell Smith had another big game with 31 points to capture scoring honors. He was 14x18 from the field and 3x5 from the line. He added 3 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.

Mike Henry was close behind with 25 points and just missed a double-double with a team high 9 rebounds. He was 8x11 from the field, 2x3 from long range and 7x9 from the line. He added 4 assists and a steal.

Nico McLean filled up the stat sheets with 19 points (6x14 fg, 2x5 3's, 5x6 ft) 6 rebounds, a team high 5 assists, 3 steals and a block.

J.O. Spence had 11 points, 5 rebounds, a steal and a block.

Jordan Glover had 8 points, 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 rebounds.

The Red Dragons
Mikey McElroy led the team with 30 points, as he shot 11x15 from the field, 5x6 from behind the arc and 3x5 from the line. He also had 7 rebounds, 3 assists and a block.

Lawrence Coleman had a double-double with 17 points and a game high 11 rebounds. He was 8x12 from the field and 1x1 from the line.

Jack Kolosky had the same double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. He was 6x8 fg, 1x2 3's, and 4x4 ft. He also added 3 assists.

Frankie Kelly just missed a double-double with 15 points (4x8 fg, 7x19 ft) and 9 assists. He also had 2 steals.

The Red Dragons were without the services of Coach Cameron Conover who was anxiously awaiting the birth of his first child. I heard it was a baby boy. Congratulations Coach.

Buffalo State improves to 11-5 overall and 5-5 in conference play. They are tied  with Fredonia for 6th place and will hope to break that tie on Saturday with a win over New Paltz slated for a 2:00 PM start.

Oneonta drops to 9-7 overall and 6-3 in the YAC which puts them in a 3rd place tie with Cortland and Geneseo. They will travel to Fredonia to tipoff at 2:00 PM on Saturday.

Jan. 21  All ten teams in action today with 5 SUNYAC games all tipping off at 2:00PM

Short on time today so just some quick picks

Potsdam State  at  Brockport State        2:00 PM

The Bears are 23 point underdogs. They won't beat the spread.   Brockport 96 Potsdam 67

New Paltz State  at   Buffalo State        2:00 PM

The Hawks are 29 point underdogs. They will beat the spread.  Buffalo State 95 New Paltz 70

Oswego State  at  Cortland State        2:00 PM  Co-Featured Game of the Day

Cortland needs a win here to most likely keep pace with the teams they are tied with. Oddsmakers have made the Red Dragons a 3 point favorite. I'll take Cortland to win this one 83-80.

Oneonta  State  at  Fredonia State        2:00 PM

These Red Dragons will welcome back their Coach and look to keep pace with the teams they're tied with. And then there is the possibility that a win will find them in 3rd place all alone.  The point spread favors Oneonta by 6 points. I think they win by a few more. Oneonta 86 Fredonia 75

Plattsburgh State     at  Geneseo State        2:00 PM  Co-Featured Game of the Day

The Cardinals are overdue for a win but they will be hard pressed to get one here. Decker and Ringen can't have another day like yesterday and the law of averages says they will both be on fire today. It's do or die for Plattsburgh, though, and a loss today will pretty much rule out any hope of post-season play. Maybe our scoring leaders won't get zebraed for a change and will actually get to play the minutes they should. Besides I hate to pick against my Cardinals even if I should. The oddsmakers have made Geneseo an 8 point favorite in this one but I'll take Plattsburgh to win it 91-87.
