Plattsburgh defeats New Paltz  80-78.

Oswego defeats Geneseo 80-75.

Both games came down to the final seconds. Not sure my heart can take any more of this. I may have to retire from the SUNYAC because of health issues.

magicman, nobody's buying that.
You couldn't stand not to be there for your D3 hoops brethren.
Thankfully.

So here we go with all the different scenarios. I think I'm right on these but if someone sees a mistake please speak up.

Oswego has clinched 1st place in the conference and will host the semifinals and finals of the SUNYAC tournament.

Brockport can come in 2nd place with a win or if Cortland and Oneonta both lose. If they lose and Cortland wins, then Cortland owns the tiebreaker over the Golden Eagles and they would come in 2nd, dropping Brockport into 3rd. Brockport owns the tiebreaker over Oneonta and they would remain ahead of them if they  are tied.

Cortland can still come in 2nd place with a win tomorrow, an Oneonta loss and a Brockport loss. They would be 13-5 Oneonta would be 12-6 and Brockport would be 13-5 but 2 losses to Cortland would eliminate them from 2nd place.

I believe Oneonta could move into 2nd place, which I didn't spot earlier today when I did my picks, because they had lost twice to Brockport. However, tomorrow, if Oneonta wins, Cortland wins, and Brockport loses, they will all end up with 13-5 records. In that case because Brockport has beaten Oneonta twice, Cortland has beaten Brockport twice, and Oneonta has beaten Cortland twice, the tiebreaker would start with the top team and work down. Only Oneonta would have a win over Oswego so those Red Dragons would end up in 2nd place....I think.
Then Cortland would come in 3rd place on the basis of their two wins over Brockport.

Buffalo State has clinched a playoff bid but if they lose to Fredonia tomorrow it will depend on what place the above teams end up to determine if they will finish in 5th or 6th place. It will also depend on who the other team below them will be that qualifies for the playoffs.

If Geneseo wins tomorrow they will clinch the 6th seed, if Buffalo State wins and Plattsburgh State loses. They will also clinch the 6th seed if Plattsburgh wins and ties them at 9-9 as long as Cortland or Brockport finish higher than Oneonta. That same scenario takes place if both Geneseo and Plattsburgh lose tomorrow. They would both end up 8-10 and the Knights win the tiebreaker over the Cards with a Cortland or Brockport finish above Oneonta. However if Geneseo and Plattsburgh both lose and Fredonia defeats Buffalo State, all 3 teams would end up 8-10 (Buff State would be 9-9) and Fredonia would clinch the 6th seed by virtue of their win over Oswego State. If Buffalo State and Plattsburgh State lose, Geneseo can get the 5th seed if they beat Cortland and Brockport finishes in front of Oneonta  because they have a win over Brockport and the Bengals do not.  They also get the 5th seed if Cortland finishes ahead of Brockport. If Oneonta finishes in front of Brockport then the Bengals will get the 5th seed since they beat Oneonta and Geneseo was swept by those Red Dragons. Neither Buffalo State or Geneseo own a win over Oswego.

Plattsburgh State can get the 6th seed if they win tomorrow and Geneseo loses. They will be 9-9 and the Knights will be 8-10. The Cardinals can also get the 6th seed if they win and Geneseo also wins as they would both be 9-9, but the Cardinals would need Oneonta to finish higher than Brockport and Cortland. Plattsburgh would have at least 1 win over Oneonta (2 if they win tomorrow) while the Knights were swept by Oneonta. Plattsburgh can also get the 6th seed with a loss, if Geneseo and Fredonia lose and Oneonta ends up higher than Brockport and Cortland. There is no scenario where the Cardinals can claim the 5th seed even if they tie Buffalo State at 9-9 because the Bengals will still have the tiebreaker over them.

As mentioned above Fredonia gets the 6th seed with a win over Bufalo State and losses by Geneseo and Plattsburgh.

I think that covers all the scenarios but after I post this I'll probably discover I missed something. ::)

Thanks AllStar,

It's not as pretty as your graphics but I think I covered all the possibilities. And there are so many. :o

What's funny (on 2nd thought it's sad) is that my Cardinals could win and not be in. Yet they could lose and  claim the 6th seed. Never thought that would be the case back on November 15th, or December 15th. :P

OOOwwweee. Beware of the magicman bearing gifts!  1st of all the SUNYAC site tonight   http://sunyacsports.com/sports/mbkb/index   indicates that only 4 teams have clinched ( and BUFFALO STATE aint listed as 1 of the 4 listed). Probably because they, SUNYAC realize that the BENGALS  HAVENT CLINCHED SQUAT YET!!!!. Tomorrow, if Geneseo beats Cortland, Fredonia beats BUFFALO STATE, Brockport beats Oswego  and Plattsburgh beats Oneonta, then  Oswego is 1st at 15-3, then Brockport at 14-4, then Oneonta at 12-6, Cortland at 12-6 and Geneseo, Plattsburgh and BUFFALO STATE would be  tied at 9-9. 1st tiebreaker...head to head. Plattsburgh split with Buffalo state...Buffalo state split with Geneseo and Geneseo split with Plattsburgh.  Soooooo that's a wash.  So how did everyone do against #1 Oswego??  All 3 got swept by the Lakers!. Hmmm How did all 3 do against Brockport?  GENESEO beat Brockport and both BUFFALO STATE and Plattsburgh got swept. SOOOO Geneseo gets the 5th spot.  Next team would be Oneonta (because they swept Cortland they would get the 3rd seed) How did both teams left (BUFFALO STATE  and Plattsburgh) do vs Oneonta. Well for Plattsburgh to be 9-9 they would have had to sweep Oneonta. BUFFALO STATE  split with Oneonta! Thereby eliminating BUFFALO STATE FROM THE SUNYAC playoffs! So BUFFALO STATE HAS N O T clinched a playoff spot and hopefully none of their players/fans believe that they have because that would really give a false sense of security , the night before the biggest game of their season. I know magicman didn't intentionally give out that mis-information, but trust me...I don't need anyone who is a BENGAL supporter , thinking  FOR 1 MINUTE, that we have a spot clinched. Because we don't!

Gets some rest BENGALS. Your 1st playoff game start in less than 16 hours!

Go BENGALS!!

magicman

Well, I did say I probably overlooked something. Never saw that one, I guess because I was looking at all the ways we needed to have things happen, to get by Geneseo. So now the Cardinals have one more way they can get into the playoffs. They need every chance they can get. I don't see the Bengals losing tomorrow. That's another reason I didn't see that scenario I guess.

At least I was right on the ones I posted. :D

Friday Night Wrap Up

Oswego State 80 Geneseo State 75

I had this one as an Oswego win by an 82-78 final. Didn't miss it by much.

The Lakers led from start to finish but had to fend off the Knights who came back from a 15 point deficit with 10:27 left in the game. Down 61-46 they got within 5 points at 70-65  with 2:54 remaining. Kevin Crockett hit a 3 pointer with 47 seconds left to make it a 1 possession game at 76-73. The Lakers missed on their end with 20 seconds left but Tyler Pierre got the key offensive rebound of the night and Geneseo had to foul him. Pierre made both foul shots and Geneseo then missed a 3 point attempt. The Lakers were fouled again and made another pair with only 11 seconds left. The Knights' John Decker made a layup with 3 seconds left to account for the final points.

Brian Sortino led Oswego with 21 points and 5 assists. That was the high point total for the night and was equaled by:
Keith Tyson who had 21 points and just missed a double-double with 9 rebounds.
Ian Schupp had 15 points and 6 rebounds.
Tyler Pierre had 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.
Jamir Ferebee had 10 point, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Geneseo got a team high 20 points from John Decker. He also had 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
CJ Burke had a double-double with 15 points and a game high 10 rebounds.
Justin Ringen had 14 points and 7 rebounds.
Kevin Crockett had 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

The Lakers clinch the top seed in the SUNYAC by winning the regular season title. They improve to 15-2 in the conference and 19-5 overall. They will travel over to Brockport for a Saturday afternoon game starting at 2:00 PM.

Geneseo falls to 13-11 overall and 8-9 in the YAC. They will host Cortland tomorrow and hope to clinch the 5th or 6th seed in the playoffs.

Oneonta State 93  Potsdam State 63

I just missed the Red Dragons total as I had this one 94-72. The Bears came up short of my expectations.

The Red Dragons had a double digit lead in this one before the game was 4 minutes old as they were up 13-2 at the 16:25 mark. They increased their lead to 21-7 on a Dwayne Freeman 3 pointer, his 3rd one of the half and continued to get scoring from all the starters as Frankie Kelly drained one from long range to make it 28-10 with 11:47 still left in the period. Up 54-27 at the break the Red Dragons were up by as much as 33 points   as the outcome of this game was never in doubt.

Frankie Kelly reached a milestone with his 1000th career point. He needed 14 points tonight to get that honor and ended up with 15 points and a double-double as he had 11 assists. He added 4 rebounds and 2 steals.
Lawrence Coleman captured scoring honors with 20 points and 5 rebounds.
Dwayne Freeman and Kevin Mackin both had 13 points
Mikey McElroy had 11 points.
Ian Schultz had 8 points and tied for the game high with 6 rebounds.

Potsdam got 17 points and 5 rebounds from Dante Langley.
Thomas jayquan had 15 point, 3 steals and 2 assists.
Danny Delsol-Lowry had 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals.
Kristoff Sanders also tied the game high with 6 rebounds, along with 5 points, 2 steals and a block.

Oneonta improves to 15-9 overall and 12-5 in the SUNYAC, good for 3rd place. They will host Plattsburgh State on Saturday at 2:00 PM.

Potsdam is now 2-22 overall and 1-16 in the conference. They will travel to New Paltz to take on the Hawks in a battle to see who will end up at the bottom of the standings.

Cortland State 79  Brockport State 74

I had this one as an 83-80 Brockport win. Just missed Cortland's total by a point, but the Golden Eagles had an off night shooting the rock from long range. That and a missed free throw near the end proved costly.

The teams played a close first half with 6 ties and 8 lead changes that ultimately found the Golden Eagles with a 44-37 halftime edge. Earlier in the period Brockport had opened up a 10 point, 24-14 lead and threatened to  break the game open but Cortland responded with a 13-2 run that brought thrm into the lead at 27-26 with 8 minutes left to play.  Down 34-32 with 3:31 to go in the period, it was Brockport's turn as they ended the half on a 12-3 run to take control heading into the break, up by 7.

Down by 9 points early in the 2nd half, the Red dragons managed to whittle it down to a single possession on a Justin Cooper 3 pointer with 15:27 to go. Four minutes later a Justin Prendergast layup tied the score at 56 and after several misses and turnovers on both ends, another Predengast layup gave the Red Dragons the lead at 58-56 with 9:28 to go.  Cortland extended the lead to 60-56 but the Golden Eagles countered with a 13-2 run that carried them into a 69-62 advantage with 4:22 left to play.  It seemed to be the definitive move but the Red Dragons went bombs away with 3 pointers by James Morales and Brendan Fitzpatrick. Cooper and Michael Kelly followed with jumpers and Cortland had a 10-2 run that brought them in front at 72-71 with 1:06 to go. Brockport's Clifton Lyerly was fouled and he made both free throws to put Port back in front, but Morales had the dagger with another shot from the top of the arc to put Cortland back on top by 2 points with 30 ticks left. Lyerly was fouled as he drove the lane and the basket was waved off sending him to the line for a pair. He was a perfect 7 for 7 on the night but missed the first one and made the 2nd. With only 25 seconds left Brockport fouled and Isaiah Cotton made them both  to make it a 3 point lead. Brockport came down and missed on a drive to the hoop and fouled again. Cortland's Cooper made another pair for the final points of the game.

Zach Lydon was the high man for Cortland with 16 points and he got his double-double with 11 rebounds.
Justin Cooper had 16 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
James Morales had 15 points, 6 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.
Michael Kelly had 10 points and 3 rebounds.
Justin Prendergast had 7 points and 7 rebounds. in 24 minutes off the bench.
Isaiah Cotton had 9 points 2 rebounds and 2 steals in 15 minutes off the bench.
Brendan Fitzpatrick had 6 points with 2 timely 3 pointers off the bench.

Brockport's reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week, Hamed Shamseldin captured scoring honors with 24 points. He also had 7 rebounds 2 assists and 2 steals.
Clifton Lyerly had a double-double with 18 points and a game high 13 rebounds. He added 2 assists, 2 blocks and a steal.
Marcus Blythers had 9 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks and a steal.
Justin Summers had 9 points 3 rebounds and a block.
Matthew Smith had 6 assists, 4 points, 2 rebounds, and a steal.

Cortland improves to 17-7 overall and 12-5 in the conference. They are tied with Oneonta for 3rd place but lose the tiebreaker against those Red Dragons. They will travel to Geneseo for a Saturday afternoon game at 2:00 PM.

Brockport's hopes for the top seed and host of the SUNYAC tournament fell by the wayside because they can't catch Oswego even if they beat the Lakers in tomorrow's match up. They are now 13-4 in the YAC and 18-6 overall. They can still get a first round bye with a win tomorrow. If they lose they would need a loss by Oneonta and Cortland to still claim the 2nd seed.

Plattsburgh State 80  New Paltz State 78

I had the Cardinals winning this by a 90-66 margin. I'm lucky they won.

The Cardinals opened the game with 7 straight points and probably figured they were just taking up where they left off the last time these two teams were on a court together. The Hawks had a different idea and came back to  make it a one possession game on a pair of 3 pointers. Plattsburgh opened up a 5 point lead on several occasions and grabbed their biggest lead of the first half at 26-19 with 8:20 left to play. Normally this would be the moment when the Hawks would fall further behind and a single digit lead would become 20 points by the break. But the Hawks exploded for 12 unanswered points to take a 31-26 lead that was fueled by a pair of Dylan Balducci 3 pointers and 2 layups by Brandon Tolliver. The Cardinals were stunned, because this wasn't the script but the Hawks had found a new writer and the plot thickened. Nick Paquette drained a 3 pointer, the Hawks were up by 8, and they were the ones on the verge of a double digit lead. The Cardinals   managed to stay with them and 3 straight inside moves by Jon Patron cut the gap to a single possession, but the Hawks outscored the Cardinals 6-2 in the final 2 minutes and went into the locker room up by 7 at 46-39.

New Paltz scored first to start the half and had a 9 point lead. Patron scored inside again but the Hawks answered that score and when the Cards Isaiah Hill buried a threeball, Tolliver did the same for the Hawks. The lead was still 9 points when Patron got hot once again. He made a jumper, then scored inside and after Plattsburgh's Zack Coleman scored on a drive Patron showed his range by hitting one from downtown. The Cardinals came storming back and outscored the Hawks 17-3 over the next 6 minutes to take a 61-56 lead with 10:46 left to play on another jumper from Patron. Paquette buried another 3 pointer for the Hawks, Patron responded with another layup inside. The Cards got a free throw from Brandon Johnson and a layup from him, on their next trip down the floor. Patron followed with another inside move and the Cardinals had their largest lead of the game at 68-59 with 7:27 to play. The Hawks responded in a very unusual way...they reeled off 15 straight point to go in front 74-68 with under 4 minutes remaining. I'm not sure if New Paltz has done that, this late in a game, all year long, but they had the Cardinals spinning their wheels and searching for a way to stop the bleeding. The answer for Plattsburgh was right where it had been all night long. Jon Patron with a little help from his friend, Eli Bryant. First Patron scored off an offensive rebound to make it 74-70, only to have the Hawks' Tristan Wissemann score inside at their end. Bryant hit a big 3 pointer to make it 76-73 with 2:20 to play. New Paltz then went to the line and got a pair of free throws from Andrew Seniuk. Bryant was the man once more with another huge 3 point shot that made it 78-76 with 1:36 to go. Both teams missed 3 point attempts on their next possession and then New Paltz turned it over with 27 seconds to play. Bryant tried to make his 3rd straight shot but missed it and Patron was there to grab the rebound and put it back up and in to tie the game at 78 with 12 seconds to go. On the ensuing trip downcourt by the Hawks Plattsburgh created a turnover and Patron got a feed from Bryant and he scored with 2 seconds left. New Paltz took a time out but couldn't get a clean shot off as Plattsburgh's Chris Middleton blocked it to end the game.

Plattsburgh got another big game from Jon Patron who almost matched the career high of 36 points that he established last Friday against Potsdam. He tossed in a game high 34 points last night and had his 8th double-double of the season with 16 rebounds, also the game high in that category.
Eli Bryant had 15 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists a steal and a block. He hit 5 of 9 shots from 3 point range.
Brandon Johnson had 9 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds and a steal in 21 minutes off the bench.
Zack Coleman had 8 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds, a steal and a block.
Chris Middleton had 7 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 assists and a steal.

Dylan Balducci led New Paltz with 14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.
Corey Garcia had a double-double of 13 points and a game high 10 assists. He added 5 rebounds and 3 steals
Andrew Seniuk had 12 points, a team high 7 rebounds, 2 assists and a block.
Brandon Tolliver had 11 points, 6 rebounds and a steal.
Nick Paquette also had 11 points, 5 rebounds, an assist, and a steal in 23 minutes off the bench.
Nick Arthur had 8 points, 4 blocks, 2 rebounds and 1 assist.
Tristan Wissemann had 7 points in 6 minutes off the bench. He was a perfect 2x2 from the field, 1x1 from distance and 2x2 from the line.

Plattsburgh improves to 12-12 overall and 8-9 in the conference. They are now tied with Geneseo for the 6th and final playoff spot. They will play at Oneonta at 2:00 PM today.

New Paltz will have a final opportunity to get into the win column in the conference, when they host Potsdam State today at 2:00 PM. The Bears, with just a single win, that came at the expense of the Hawks, will try and prevent any company in the basement.

All-Time

Brockport over Oswego

Cortland over Geneseo

New Paltz over Potsdam

Buffalo State over Fredonia

Oneonta over Plattsburgh

Feb. 18  Five games on tap on the final day of the regular season.

Not much time so just some quick picks.

Oswego State  at    Brockport State        2:00 PM

The drama is all gone with the loss by the Golden Eagles yesterday. Only pride on the line and that's not enough to snap the Eagles out of their funk. Oddsmakers have made Brockport a 5 point favorite. I think the Lakers win by 5... 83-78.

Cortland State  Geneseo State                 2:00 PM

I need a Cortland win here in the worst way. I hope these Red Dragons can win one for me. The oddsmakers have made Cortland a slim 1 point favorite. I can go with that (apologies to Hall and Oates) Cortland 85 Geneseo 84.

Potsdam State  at  New Paltz State         2:00 PM

Hawks been waiting all year for this one. And after their near miss yesterday I think they get it. So do the oddsmakers who have made the Hawks a 4 point favorite. New Paltz 73 Potsdam 68.

Fredonia State  at  Buffalo State                 3:000 PM

The Blue Devils still alive for a playoff bid. The Bengals can't afford to lose and leave their fate in someone else's hands. The point spread favors the Bengals by a double digit 12 point margin. I think they win by a few more. Buffalo State 88 Fredonia 73.

Plattsburgh State  at  Oneonta State         2:00 PM

Plattsburgh needs a win here in the worst way. Oneonta would like one as well, but doesn't need one like the Cardinals do. I think the Red Dragons will probably win this one but I need to root, root, root, for the away team. So despite the oddsmakers favoring Oneonta by a solid 8 point spread, I'm bucking the odds and taking Plattsburgh to pull off the upset and come away with a 90-87 win.
