Thanks Dave. No need to go searching - I trust you!! Good to know that I (and others) didn't miss out on nominations. -- Fran

Yeah ... with the slow start to the season, due to the earlier start, things are "off" as a result. The next Top 25 isn't even coming out until the Monday after Thanksgiving, either (there are five Thursdays this month, making it more interesting as well).

Per searching ... I wanted to double-check which week it started. It is this upcoming Monday (prior to Thanksgiving): https://twitter.com/d3hoops/status/1062091594604691456

I had just finished typing a post that stated: I think our friend from Buffalo was looking at last year's Team of the Week from February and mistakenly thought it was this year's first weekly TOTW. I hit post only to spot the new posts from Fran and Dave (Sounds like a rock group I knew).

As Dave stated, with the earlier, odd start this year it didn't make sense to me that D3hoops would have a TOTW so early. Last year's first TOTW was from Nov. 15th through Nov. 26th. I figured this year it would be Nov. 8th through the 18th.

EDIT:  I just noticed that the SUNYAC had a Player of the Week for  both men and women for the week ending November 11th. The men only had 3 games scheduled and the women had 6 but they still gave out the weekly award. The Buffalo State player that Bengalsrule referred to was Princella McCullough and she did win the SUNYAC Player of the Week award. That was probably what sent our Bengal friend to the D3hoops site to see if she had made their weekly Team of The Week. Easy to think if we had awards after a short week so would they, but we know the YAC has their system and D3hoops has a slightly different one. They are both consistent to what has been done in the past. No harm...no foul!!! (Except Fran must have experienced a few anxious moments) ;D

As I suspected, Tyler Collins is the first winner of the SUNYAC Player of the Week award for the 2018-19 season.  Here is the write up from the YAC website:

"CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected Brockport senior Tyler Collins (Newark, N.Y.) as this season's first recipient to be named the Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week.

Collins was the star of a Golden Eagles offense that was two points shy of the century mark on Friday when they earned their first win of the season, 98-91, against Medaille College. The guard scored a career-high 31 points in 35 minutes of play, shooting 12-for-19 from the field and 5-for-6 from three point range, and was 2-for-3 from the free-throw line. The senior also got his teammates involved with seven assists, and nabbed five rebounds. Collins was tenacious on defense as well, recording five steals and two blocks."

Congratulations to Tyler on a great game.

And I just checked the site - there's no Team of the Week posted for this week. The last one posted was for last February. Bengals, if you have a link to the newest Team of the Week (if there is one), please post it here. Otherwise, I don't think there was one this past week. Thanks. -- Fran

Thanks Fran..Pat...Magicman.  Hopefully one of you can recommend Princella at the appropriate time!

Plattsburgh State 105   Clarkson 95

I had the Cardinals winning by a 92-80 final in this one but lots of fouls added 20 points to the totals in the last 90 seconds. The spread was pretty close though.

Plattsburgh allowed Clarkson to have an early 4-0 lead but after that it was all Plattsburgh the rest of the way. This game, at times, looked like it was going to be a blowout as the Cardinals had a 12 point lead halfway through the first period, but the Golden Knights refused to fold and Plattsburgh could never quite put them away. The Cardinals went up by 13 on a jumper by Nick DeAngelis for their largest first half lead with 7:51 left in the period but 2 minutes later after a pair of Clarkson trifectas the lead was down to 5. It was only at 4 with 1:08 to go when DeAngelis drained a 3 pointer and the Cardinals' Ian Howard stole the ball. He fed Brandon Johnson who slammed it home to end the half with Plattsburgh up by 9 at 45-36.

Most of the 2nd period had the Cardinals attaining a healthy lead only to have Clarkson narrow the gap. The lead went from 15 at 16;53 down to 6 at 11:53. It zoomed back up to 20 by the 5:21 mark and that margin proved to be too much for Clarkson to overcome. They got as close as 7 points but the Cardinals closed them out at the line.

Plattsburgh shot 36x64 from the field (56.3%), 7x16 from 3 point range (43.8%) and 26x36 (72.2%) from the stripe.

Clarkson was 31x70 (44.3%) from the field, 16x40 from long distance (40%) and 17x23 (73.9%) from the line.

Clarkson had 37 rebounds and 18 turnovers. The Cardinals had 36 rebounds and 13 turnovers.

Brandon Johnson led 3 Cardinals in double figures and captured scoring honors with a career high (I think) 28 points (10x18 fg, 1x2 3's, 7x12 ft). He also had 4 assists and a block.

Jon Patron just missed his usual double-double with 27 points (8x12 fg, 4x6 3's, 7x11 ft) and 9 rebounds. He added 2 assists and a steal.

Nick DeAngelis came off the bench and scored 23 points (7x13 fg, 2x7 3's, 7x7 ft) in 25 minutes . He grabbed 5 boards and had1 assist.

Ian Howard had a game high 10 rebounds to go along with his 6 points. He added 2 assists and 2 steals.

Isaiah Hill added 8 points on 4x6 from the field, with 2 rebounds a block and a steal.

Plattsburgh is right back in action on Wednesday night as they host Liberty League power, Skidmore, in a 7:00 PM meeting.

Nov. 14
Two games on the docket for tonight.

Fredonia State  @  D'Youville        7:00 PM

The Blue Devils lost a lot from a team that did not have a good year last season. They have brought in 10 new players, 6 freshmen and four transfers. Hopefully the transfers can bring it because they need it now. I'm picking them to lose this game even though they are playing a team that hasn't beaten them since 2007. D'Youville has lost the last 6 times they've met going back to 2007. They were supposed to play last season on the Spartans home court but it was postponed and never made up. So I guess we could say this is a game two years in the making.

Don't know much about D'Youville except they are 1-1 and hung with Alfred last time out. The oddsmakers have Fredonia listed as a 3 point favorite. I can't take the Blue Devils until they show me they can win. I think the Spartans win at home in a close one.
D'Youville 73 Fredonia 69.

Love to be wrong and have Fredonia open with a win. Go Blue Devils!

Skidmore  @  Plattsburgh State        7:00 PM   The Game of the Week

The rubber match between these two teams. They have met for the past 4 years and each has won 2 games. 3 of those 4 games were played in Saratoga on the Thoroughbreds home track. The Cardinals managed to win 1 there and beat the Ponies when they came to Plattsburgh, 2 years ago. Last year they won in Saratoga, handily, but we didn't have our go to guy, Jon Patron. Hopefully the Cardinals will be up for the challenge. Plattsburgh is playing their 2nd game in 2 days while Skidmore had a game last Saturday at home against Muhlenberg. They won that game 75-69.

Skidmore returns more of their lineup from last year than Plattsburgh does, including their All American candidate Edvinas Rupkus. They were picked in their league's coaches poll to come in 2nd in the standings behind Hobart but I can see Skidmore winning the Liberty League. Last year was disappointing for them because they had high expectations but after starting out 6-0, they dropped a couple of non- conference games then suffered some inexplicable losses to teams near the bottom of the conference.  After beating Hobart in the conference tournament semifinals they lost to Union in the championship game and didn't go dancing. Union did and ultimately ended up in Plattsburgh where we beat them 87-75 to advance to the Sweet 16.

The oddsmakers have made Plattsburgh a 9 point favorite. I would have thought the point spread would have been smaller, no more than 5. I'll take Plattsburgh to win this one by a score of 92-87.

Go Cardinals!!

Congrats to the P Burgh cards for keeping the "nearly undefeated" (damn new paltz)   'Yac non conference streak rolling (7-1). Not sure where Brandon Johnson found all his new scoring power (averaged under 9 a game last year), but he sure picked a good time to come through. Hope he is just as hot when they take on Liberty league #2 (predicted) Skidmore tonight! Hoping that he doesn't slow down (until Jan 12th).  Currently the Liberty League is ranked higher than the SUNYAC so a inter-east divisional conference win (say that 3 times real  fast) should bode well for our overall conference standing!

Also count me in the the Go "Blue Devils" list as I'm hoping the former Canisius College legend Phil Seymour, gets his season started out with a win tonight vs D'Youville. I saw DYouville in a scrimmage 2 weeks ago and a Fredonia victory would not surprise me!

Bengalsrule

Yac goes 1-1 tonight for an impressive 8-2 ( I'm not counting Cortlands game at D 1 Wagner) non conference record! Plattsburgh must be butter....because they are on a ROLL! ;D

8 teams gets a piece of the action this weekend !  I can't wait 😊

Plattsburgh State 83  Skidmore 78

Plattsburgh scored first and scored last to hold off the Skidmore Thoroughbreds in an exciting game at Memorial Hall in Plattsburgh. With both teams hoping to enter post season play this year the winner of this game could have a leg up if an at large bid is needed for entry to the NCAA tournament. Last year in an early season matchup, Brockport defeated Hobart, who was the regular season champion of the Liberty League (but lost in the playoffs) and as a result Brockport went dancing with an at large bid, while the Statesmen stayed home. So this game may be pivotal down the road.

The Cardinals were never headed in this contest but they couldn't put away a talented and big Skidmore team. Strong first half play by starters Isaiah Hill with 11 points, and Chris Middleton with 8 points kept Plattsburgh slightly ahead of their opponents for most of the period. A trio of 3 pointers from Nick DeAngelis kept the Ponies at bay on several occasions when they were close to overtaking the Cardinals. Plattsburg's Jon Patron had trouble scoring inside as the size and double teams of the Skidmore bigs limited him to just 2 points. He was also called for 2 early fouls which cut into his court time. Not to worry though, as the rest of the team came to play and with their leading scorer on the bench, the Cardinals nursing a 4 point lead, 24-20, at the 5 minute mark, got a jumper from Middleton, a 3 pointer from Hill, and another trey from Brandon Johnson. Just like that the lead was 12 points and just as quickly it disappeared as Skidmore got back to back three's from Edvinas Rupkus and Jack Bryne. Another score by the Ponies cut the lead to 4 and the half ended with Plattsburgh up 37-33.

Skidmore opened the 2nd half with consecutive baskets inside, to tie the game at 37, but Plattsburgh scored 5 straight points on a basket by Hill and a 3 ball by Patron. After a Skidmore bucket, Brandon Johnson scored 5 straight points on a 3 pointer and a fast break dunk. The Cards had an 8 point advantage that reached double digits once again, when Johnson drained another 3 pointer to make it 52-42 with 13:56 to play. The next 4 baskets would come from behind the arc and 3 of them belonged to the Thoroughbreds. The lead was down to 4 and it was game on, once again. The lead would fluctuate between 2 points and 8 points the rest of the way. Crunch time came with just over 6 minutes to go, when the Cardinals nursing a 2 point lead, got a free throw from Middleton, a jumper from Johnson, and a free throw from Patron, to go up by 6. Skidmore scored in the paint and Patron answered in the paint. Rupkus hit a pair from the line and Patron answered that with another inside basket. Skidmore came down needing to score and misfired. They grabbed the offensive board, missed again, and that started the foul parade as Plattsburgh closed them out hitting 6 of 8 from the line.

Plattsburgh was 27x70 (38.6%) from the field, 11x29 (37.9%) from 3 point range, and 18x28 (64.3%) from the line.

Skidmore was 26x54 (48.1%) from the field, 10x24 (41.7%) from long range and 13x21 (61.9%) from the line.

Plattsburgh had 43 rebounds to 31 for Skidmore.  The Cards had 9 turnovers and Skidmore had 16

Plattsburgh
Brandon Johnson once again led the Cardinals with 18 points (6x18 fg, 3x8 3's, 3x4 ft). He had 4 assists and 3 rebounds.

Jon Patron had 16 points (6x17 fg, 2x5 3's, 2x4 ft) with 14 of them coming on the 2nd half. He added 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. 2nd night in a row he missed a double-double by a single rebound.

Nick DeAngelis also had 16 points (4x13 fg, 4x10 3's, 4x4 ft), 3 rebounds and 1 assist.

Isaiah Hill scored 13 points (5x8 fg, 1x2 3's, 2x4 ft) with 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a block.

Chris Middleton had 9 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a block.

Ian Howard was the leading rebounder in the game with 14.

Travis Cox came off the bench and contributed 7 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds and a steal.

Skidmore
Edvinas Rupkus led Skidmore and captured scoring honors with 22 points. He added 10 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.

Noah Meren had 20 points 2 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and a block.

Jack Byrne had 12 points hitting 4 of 7 from downtown.

Plattsburgh is now 2-0 and will travel to Canton to take on SUNY Canton on Friday November 16th at 5:00 PM

Fredonia State 77  D'Youville 85

The Blue Devils will have a tough time in the SUNYAC this season so they need to get some wins against teams on their non-conference slate. This was one of them that could have been on the plus side. I said they would lose a close one and hoped I was wrong but they fell behind early and went into the half down 44-35.

The 2nd half was more of the same as the Spartans were in a comfort zone and Fredonia never put on the heat. The lead was mostly double digits and got as high as 16. The Blue Devils cut the margin to 7 points at 62-55, on a 3 pointer by De'Quan Smith with 7:25 to play, but they missed their next 4 shots and the Spartans made 3 layups to go back up by 13 with 5:30 on the clock. The lead was 16 points with 49 seconds left and the Blue Devils did well to cut it to a final margin of 8.

Bediako Nyasa led the Blue Devils with 17 points (7x14 fg, 3x6 3's). He added 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

Cody Johnson had 15 points (7x12 fg, 0x3 3's, 1x2 ft), 5 rebounds and 3 blocks.

Colden George had 10 points (3x4 fg, 3x4 3's, 1x2 ft) with 2 assists a steal and a rebound on 22 minutes off the bench.

The Spartans outshot Fredonia by a slim margin 27x64 (42.2%) to 31x78 (39.7%) and also won the rebounding battle 54 to 39.

Fredonia will be back on the court on Saturday November 17th when they travel to Medaille College to take on Washington and Jefferson College at 2:00 PM

Nov. 16   Six teams in action today      Snowstorms and vehicle problems leave me no time so just some quick picks today.

Plattsburgh State   @  SUNY-Canton        5:00 PM

Plattsburgh travels to Canton and the Kangaroos would like to improve upon the 88-58 beating the Cardinals put on them last year. They return most of that team, so do we.  The oddsmakers have listed Plattsburgh as the favorite by 17 points. I think they win by more than that. Plattsburgh 94 Canton 70.

Potsdam State  @  WPI        5:30 PM      Ted Coghlin Memorial Tournament

The Bears find themselves in a tough spot here as they play the home team in the WPI tournament. They are supposed to go meekly into the night so the Engineers can march into the championship game tomorrow. They may not be the fodder that WPI thought it was getting, as Potsdam's starting five can play. WPI is tough though,as they return 8 of their top 9 players from last year, so the Bears will need to bring it. The Engineers have been listed as a 15 point favorite. Not sure if Potsdam can keep it closer.  WPI  wins this one by a final score of 97-84.  Hope I'm wrong about that one. Go Bears.

Thiel  @  Geneseo State        6:00 PM   Buzz Ridl Tournament @ Westminster College (New Wilmington, Pa.)

The first of two matchups today, between the SUNYAC and the Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC). The Thiel Tomcats are coming off a 7-17 season and opened up this campaign with 2 double digit losses. Geneseo has a bunch of new faces and is 1-0. They are favored to win this one by 9 points. The YAC is a stronger conference than the PAC. I'll take Geneseo to win 83-71.

Grove City  @  Oneonta State        6:00 PM     @ Selingsgrove, PA.   Susuquehanna University's Tip Off Tournament

The Red Dragons take on the other PAC team The Wolverines from Grove City. The point spread in this one has Oneonta favored by 5 points. I think Oneonta wins by a few more...Red Dragons 87  Grove City 79.

SUNY-Maritime  @  New Paltz State        7:00 PM

The Hawks are favored by 10 points in this game. When was the last time you saw that? I think they get it done but only win by 8. Final score... 90-82.

Elmira  @  Oswego State        7:30 PM

This could be an interesting game. Last year Elmira went 4-21 but one of those 4 wins was a defeat of the Lakers in Elmira, 103-90. The Oswego coaching staff would like to erase the taste of that. The Lakers have yet to hit the hardwood this season while Elmira is 1-1. The win is nothing much to talk about, but the loss was to Cortland and at one point they led those Red Dragons by 16 points late in the first half. Cortland ultimately won the game 102-94, but with 3:44 left to play they were tied at 82. Sooooo...the Lakers better not mess around because apparently the Soaring Eagles have some game. The oddsmakers have made Oswego a 17 point favorite. They apparently don't know that Brian Sortino graduated 2 years ago. I like the Lakers to win also but I think it will be closer than that.
Oswego State 87 Elmira 80

AllStar
