The SUNYAC never disappoints. ;D
It's early in the season and things are already getting crazy.
Think this is going to be one unpredictable year.

Wishing everyone Happy Holidays.
Enjoy the time with your families.

Brockport's Justin Summers was named as the SUNYAC Player of the Week after his Golden Eagles went 2-0 in conference play and took down reigning YAC champs, Plattsburgh State, last Friday evening. Summers hit the game winning point as Brockport won it with 1 second left in the contest. With the score tied at 78, and the clock about to expire,  Summers got his hands on a loose ball that was a result of a blocked shot by Plattsburgh's Isaiah Hill. He quickly released the ball for the short putback but was fouled and went to the line and put Brockport in front by sinking the first free throw. Justin captured scoring honors in the Plattsburgh game with 21 points and did the same the next night against Potsdam with 23  points. He had a double-double in both games grabbing 14 rebounds against Plattsburgh and 18 against Potsdam.

Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:

"CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference names Justin Summers (Brooklyn, N.Y. / Bushwick Campus) its Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week for the week ending December 9.

Brockport's Justin Summers was a key fixture for the Golden Eagles as they went 2-1 during the week, including two important victories of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) opponents. In the first game of the week against Hobart College, Summers scored 17 points, while grabbing seven rebounds and blocking three shots in 26 minutes of play. Up next, the junior shined in the two battles over the weekend starting with an upset win against the No. 10 ranked Plattsburgh State. Summers was able to hit 9-of-12 shots from the free-throw line on his way to 21 points, 14 rebounds and recording another block in 36 minutes on the court. The final game of the weekend was a dominating performance over SUNY Potsdam. Summers scored 23 points and secured another double-double with a career high 18 rebounds, while collecting two blocks. Overall, Summers averaged 20.3 points per game, 13 rebounds a game and 2 blocks per game in 32.3 minutes per game. "

Congratulations to Justin on a great week.

The new D3hoops Top 25 poll was released Monday night and Plattsburgh State (8-1, 3-1) is ranked #14 with 297 points. The Cardinals dropped 4 spots from last week's poll and lost 71 points after losing their first game of the year. They were defeated by Brockport State on Friday December 7th by a single point when the Golden Eagles went to the line with 1 second left on the clock and made 1 of 2 from the stripe. It was 364 days since Plattsburgh had lost to a SUNYAC team, which was also Brockport back on December 8th, 2017 by a 2 point margin. The Cardinals had won 19 conference games in a row since that loss. A new streak was started on Saturday as Plattsburgh got back on the winning track with a victory at Geneseo.

Oswego State (8-0, 3-0) received 23 points in the "Others Receiving Votes" category,  which was almost double what they had gotten the week before.  On December 29th they will travel south and play an interesting game against Emory University in the Eagles Holiday Classic. Emory was ranked in the D3hoops Top 25 in the first 2 polls this year and were picked by the coaches of the University Athletic Association conference to win the league this year. If the Lakers come home from that tournament with a pair of wins and take care of business on Friday against St. Lawrence (0-2 already against the YAC) they could be in the Top 25 by early January. Keeping my fingers crossed for that to happen.

The University of Rochester is on the rise as the undefeated Yellowjackets (9-0) moved up from #17 to #13. Their point total increased from 230 to 305.

No other team in the East Region is receiving any support.

Dec. 11

Only one game involving conference teams tonight as we go back to non-conference play over the next 4 weeks. The next
set of SUNYAC games will take place on Tuesday, January 8th, 2019.

New Paltz State  @  Baruch        7:30 PM

The Hawks have a winning record this far into the season for the first time since December 7th, 2010, when they were 4-3 after 7 games. So what is their current winning record 8 years and a day later?....Exactly the same...a 4-3 record. In 2010 they lost their next game, when they were double digit underdogs against Montclair State and lost 88-76. It's deja vu all over again because just like 8 years ago, the oddsmakers have made the Hawks double digit dogs against Baruch. Favored by 10 points the Bearcats are 6-2 and own a win over Brockport State by 12 points back on November 20th.

I'm happy that Coach Kenny appears to be turning the New Paltz program around but he'll have his work cut out for him tonight.  I'd love to see the Hawks avenge the Bport loss but don't think it will happen. Lets go with the deja vu theme...the Bearcats win this one
88-76, but hope I'm wrong.

New Paltz falls to Baruch 76-60.

The Hawks hung with them for most of the game. Several made baskets by New Paltz that were called charges and instead of a possible 3 point play saw them lose the points. They came at critical times and just hurt their push to cut further into the lead. Hawks were only down 51-45 with less than 10 minutes left in the game. The final score doesn't reflect how close the game was.

Wow  a 4-3 Ithaca beats U of Rochester?  Same Ithaca that lost to Cortland, at Ithaca, by 10, on Nov 27th. Hmmmmmm

Dec. 14     The only game on tap for today

St. Lawrence   @  Oswego State        6:00 PM

The Lakers lead this series 6-4  over  the past 10 years and this game is usually a close contest but last year the Lakers blew the Saints away winning by 37 points 100-63. The Saints big man and go to guy, Riley Naclerio, got injured just prior to that game but he's back this year, for a final crack at the Lakers. The oddsmakers have listed Oswego as a 17 point favorite in this one. SLU has already lost to YAC teams Potsdam by 13 points and Plattsburgh by 29 points but have strung together 3 wins in a row for the first time in 22 months.  However the Lakers should have this game under control after the  first 10 minutes.   Oswego wins this one 83-69 to remain undefeated.

Magicman....saw your name here....so I dropped in  :).  Hope you and yours are well and having fun.
Anyway....the lost by Rochester to Ithaca, MAY have been in part to what I label the "end of semester effect"..exams, etc.  In the Nescac, there have been a number of teams that played well one day and  poorly in the next game against weaker opponents.  All Nescac schools are in the Exam period now..I believe.  Middlebury does have a slightly different academic system, however.  Just my two bit piece of input.

Oswego 68 SLU 50.  Think the Lakers may be the 300 pound gorilla in the NCAA East until someone steps up...

You may have something there Bear!  I saw Oswego up close and personal 2 weekends ago and they have a mixture of talent that doesn't seem to care who gets the shots, credit or headlines.  It will be interesting to see how they handle a 7-2 Emory in 2 weeks down in the dirty south !

Oswego 68   St Lawrence 50

I had the Lakers winning by 14 with a bigger point total. The MOV was close though.

Oswego jumped out to an 8-0 start and never allowed the Saints to gain the lead. Up 14-6, Oswego let St. Lawrence tie the game at 14, before ripping off another 13-4 run, to go up 27-18 with 4 minutes left in the period. They were up 34-26 at the break.

The Lakers doubled up SLU 16-8 in the early going of the 2nd period to go up by a 50-34 margin with 12:45 left to play. Oswego was never really threatened from that point on and coasted home with the largest lead being the final score.

Oswego's Brandan Gartland captured scoring honors and led 4 Lakers in double digits with 23 points. He added 6 rebounds, 6 assists and drained 4 shots from downtown.

Joe Sullivan had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. He also added 5 assists and 2 steals to his sheet.

Tyler Pierre had 11 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks while Quinn Carey hit 4 shots from behind the arc to score 12 points.

Liam Sanborn only put 3 points on the board but had 6 assists and 6 rebounds with only 1 turnover in 36 minutes of play.

Oswego led in nearly all statistical categories which is usually the case when you win by double figures.

The Lakers improve to 9-0 (3-0 in the YAC) and match their best start in program history, I believe. They will look to set a program record 10-0 start when they return to action after the Christmas holiday.

They travel south to Atlanta, Georgia and will take on Emory University on December 29th at 4:00 in the Eagles Holiday Classic. Hopefully they will spoil the Eagles plans to go undefeated in their tournament. That will be a tough game as Emory ended last year in 12th place in the D3hoops Top 25 as they went 23-5. They were selected by the coaches of the University Athletic Association (UAA) to capture the league's championship this year. The UAA does not have a conference tournament to determine who gets their automatic NCAA bid as that always goes to the regular season champion. D3hoops listed them as the 18th ranked team in their preseason poll, but they have since stumbled a bit and aren't currently ranked.

Oswego State is currently receiving votes in the "Others Receiving Votes" category of D3hoops Top 25. The Lakers were in 31st place in the last poll. If they win their next 2 games and if Plattsburgh State, with games against a NESCAC team...Wesleyan on December 19th, and a  UAA team....Case Western Reserve on December 20th, should win those games, then the possibility of 2 SUNYAC teams ranked in the Top 25 poll for the first time in a long, long, time (if ever), could happen.

Dec. 15                   Two YAC teams hit the hardwood today

Cortland State  @   SUNY-Old Westbury        2:00 PM

The Red Dragons are favored by 11 points in this one and they should win by that margin or more. They need to take care of business and not let a lesser team hang around, though. Hope that doesn't happen today. Cortland in recent years has lost some of these very winnable games. Cortland 84  Old Westbury  75.

Buffalo State  @  Bridgewater (Va.)        7:30 PM

The Bengals won't have an easy time in today's contest and are 6 point underdogs according to the oddsmakers. I like the way they have been playing lately and but for a few bad bounces could easily be 6-1 instead of 3-4. I think their luck changes today, plus they have always done well in the holiday tournaments. People have been telling me Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays so it's not too early to call this a holiday tournament. Bengals win and spoil the Eagles Holiday Classic...Buffalo State 86 Bridgewater 81.

Trying to bring up the video stream for the Cortland game from both Cortland and Old Westbury's web page but can't get the video to load. The live stats link is working but wanted to see the game.  Is it just me or is it a transmitting problem and no one can get it.?  Would appreciate any reply.
