Cortland gets a 3 pointer from Nicky Bonura, as the clocks winds down to end the first half, and it gives the Red Dragons a 38-37 halftime advantage. It was only Bonura's 15th-16th and 17th points in the period, as he goes 5-6 from long distance. Justin Cooper helped out with 10 markers amd 6 rebounds.

Cortland guys need to come out of the locker room and make a statement early in the 2nd half and take the Panthers out of their comfort zone. Need the big guy to get hot inside.

Cortland 96   Old Westbury76

The Red Dragons did just what they needed to do after the break and took the game right away from the Panthers. The intermission didn't cool Nicky Bonura down as he matched his exact first half output by scoring another 17 points to wind up with scoring honors of 34 points. He drained another 4 shots from behind the arc to wind up with nine 3 pointers for the game. He also added 5 rebounds, 2 steals and  assist.

Cortland, fueled by 9 points from Bonura and 7 points from Justin Cooper, outscored Old Westbury 21-11 over the first 5 and a half minutes of the half to gain a double digit lead of 59-38. With 14 minutes on the clock Ryan Schmadel, who was scoreless at that point in the game, decided to see how quickly he could reach double figures. He buried 3 shots from downtown in 57 seconds and the Red Dragons had a 17 point lead. at 68-51. Two minutes later he added a 4th triple to give him his 12 points for the game and this one was basically over. Cooper was on the same bandwagon as he ended up with 25 points on 9x12 from the field, 1x1 from deep and 6x6 from the stripe. The Red Dragons got another pair of long distance buckets, in succession, from Bonura and the lead ballooned to the largest of the night at 21 for Cortland.

Cortland's Kenny Charles just missed a double with 9 points and 9 rebounds. He added 3 assists and a block. Zach Lydon didn't score but grabbed 5 rebounds had 2 assists and a block.

Cortland improves to 6-2 overall (3-1 in the conference) and will take a break until December 29th when they travel to Pittsford, N.Y. to take on the Keystone College Giants in a holiday tournament hosted by St. John Fisher. The Giants will be playing their 3rd team from the SUNYAC this season having already played and lost 91-73 to Oneonta to open their schedule back in November. They also have a game on Monday Dec. 17th when they will host the Potsdam State Bears.  They could be 0-3 in the YAC and occupy our non-con basement with St. Lawrence and Clarkson.

Buffalo State losing to Bridgewater (Va) by a 46-39 score at the half.

Dom Grayer and Ryniek Holloway lead the Bengals with 9 points each.

The Bengals need to play with a bit more discipline. Lots of turnovers (16 in the first half) and a number of chances to put easy points on the board fall by the wayside.

Buff State should be leading this game by 7 not trailing.  Hoping the guys get their act together this half....Go Bengals! A win over an ODAC school would help the entire conference 's SOS.

Dec. 16     Two games today involving teams from the SUNYAC

Buffalo State    vs  Eastern Mennonite        12:00 PM   @ Bridgewater, Va.

The Bengals facing another ODAC team and looking to end 2018 on a winning note in their 2nd game of the Bridgewater Holiday Classic Tournament. Eastern Mennonite has been listed as a 1 point favorite by the oddsmakers, making this game essentially a tossup. I was all in on the Bengals in yesterday's contest and they made me a loser so I'd be a fool to do the same thing today against a similar opponent. Oh well, I've been called worse things than a fool...Bengals get one more chance from me and win this one over the Royals, 89-83....but this is their last chance. Buff State loses and I'll consign them to the depths of Fredonia.

Gallaudet vs  Brockport        2:00 PM   Mauro Panaggio Tournament hosted by Brockport State in Daytona Florida

The Golden Eagles are big favorites in this game as the oddsmakers have them winning this matchup by 22 points. It looks like Gallaudet is the typical fodder for the host school to guarantee that the host school makes an appearance in the championship game. Gallaudet is 1-8 this season and their 1 win was against an opponent who is 1-9. They usually lose by double figures  and play in one of the weakest conferences in all of Division III. I could go on but... you get the picture. Teams like this have nothing to lose so they leave it all on the floor. The Golden Eagles better take care of them early so they don't hang around and get their hopes up. I'm sure they will...get taken care of early, that is.....Brockport 94 Gallaudet 66.

Magicman.....saw your name on the boards today and read your posts....there are games today?!.  Anyway, your mention of a game with Gallaudet by Brockport brought back some very, very old memories.  The Gallaudet College was in the Wash. D.C. area of my youth.  The present football and athletic areas were open fields when I was in elementary school.  Several classmates in Jr. High on Capital Hill lived on the College campus...their father was a prof. at the Deaf/Dumb College.  Am amazed that the school now participates in D3 athletics such as football and basketball.  Yes, I am quite naive in this area.  I remember when the Un. of Md, College Park was recruiting a talented player who would not play during the Sabbeth...like Yeshiva Un.players. Much discussion in the local papers on the matter of religious restrictions. A roommate in grad school was a grad of Yeshiva Un. and followed food and other religious restrictions.  A little off track...but an possible reason for why Gallaudet may have a poor record.

Eastern Mennonite 90  Buffalo State 85

I was only 3 points off on my total of 89-83, but once again Buffalo State can't get me the win as they fall 90-85 to Eastern Mennonite. Bengals led for much of the first half, by as many as 9 points on several occasions and went into the break up by 4 at 47-43. The 2nd half brought 8 ties and 5 lead changes until the Royals, down 72-70 with 6:48 remaining, put together 10 unanswered points to go in front 80-72 with 4:30 on the clock. The closest the Bengals could get was 5 points as the Royals made 5x7 shots from the field and 4x7 from the line in the final 5 minutes of play.

Sheldon Adams led 5 Bengals in double figures with 16 points. He added 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.

Kay Grant had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds along with 3 steals.

Ryniek Holloway also had 15 points, 3 assisys, 2 boards and a steal.

Kareem Holmes scored 12 points, had 8 assists, 4 rebounds, a steal and a block.

Dom Grayer also had 12 points, with 6 boards an assist and a steal.

The Bengals drop to 3-6 overall (1-2 YAC) and will be off for the next 22 days until they host Brockport on January 8th at 7:30 PM.

Not the ending to 2018 that I had hoped for. I'm glad I took this past weekend off to drive down to VA and support my BENGALS. I see why the ODAC is Massey's 9th ranked conference in D3. I Had hoped for a better performance but alas it wasn't there.  Saturday vs Bridgewater was a tough 1. Not to mention the fact that 3 players (Adams. Christopher and Ramovic) who average a combined 25.1 points , didn't dress for the game. To loose by 7 after missing 9 free throws hurts even more. 16 turnovers in 1st half didn't help my BENGALS cause either.

Turnovers plagued my BENGALS on Saturday too (19 total). I must say that I was encouraged by Kay Grant's nearly double double weekend (15 boards 9 rebounds), Dom Grayer's somewhat subpar performance that still netted him 37 points for the weekend and Ryniek "Doc" Holloway coming off the bench to average 12.5 pts over the weekend. I'm glad to know that there's no Yac team that can put nearly 8 players on the court at 6' 5 or taller like Eastern Mennonite U can .  I can't remember seeing a team that big in years. Having a 6'7 (#34) come off the bench to relieve another 6'7 (#32) is more than a notion. They grow big down in the ODAC!

Well its on to strictly SUNYAC games after the 1st of the year. A 2-4 Non-conference record isn't exactly a thing of beauty, but with a team with only 1 senior on it, I feel that the future is extremely bright. I don't expect many non-believers to believe in BENGALs  however I go to sleep knowing that I, and many like me, believe in the the Buffalo State BENGALS . Undoubtedly time will tell who's what in the SUNYAC, however last time I checked no one gets the Yac title in December. That doesn't happen for a couple of months.

I'm proud of the fact that Coach Ansari didn't schedule a bunch of cupcakes to fatten up the BENGALS non conference record. In fact all, but 1 of the  6 Buff State opponents, have a winning record as of today (and that "1" is Bridgewater state at 5-5). Not 1 team has a losing record ( with out checking I seriously doubt that any other SUNYAC team can say the same). Some Yac teams, have (IMHO) opinion , loaded up on cupcakes in their non conference schedule to help make themsleves look better before Jan.    For instance there's a Yac team that has beaten 2   0-9 teams. 1   2-7 team, 1   5-5 team and 1 team with a winning record 5-3.  I'm not gonna mention that teams name because dogging a fellow Yac member is bush league (IMH0) however facts are facts. In FACT, Buffalo State is the only Yac team that has not played any non - conference teams with a losing record as of today! ( I went ahead and looked it up)

I know that Coach Ansari could have easily loaded up his schedule with the same cupcakes, but he choose to schedule tough teams...from tough conferences i e ODAC is # 9th ranked conference and Ohio Athletic conference (OAC) is ranked #3 in d3 hoops. So while others may thump their chest about beating teams with a combined 12- 33 record, I'm proud that my BENGALS choose NOT to go that way.

I want my BENGALS to be at the top of their game in Feb...not December.  I'm reminded of a saying that my grandma used to say.... "Those who love us...love us well, those who don't, can go to..(fill in )."    I love my BENGALS!

Happy Holidays YAC family!

Dec. 17

Potsdam State @  Keystone        6:00 PM

The Bears are favored in this game by a double digit margin. Can't remember the last time that happened. I hope they get a win tonight as Keystone is a long way to go to play a single game and go home with a loss. Oddsmakers have them listed as a 10 point winner. I think they win also.   Final score Potsdam 85 Keystone 72.

thebear

Bears win 81-69.  With 4:25 left Bears led by 27 and pulled their regulars.  Keystone went on an 18-3 run to end the game.

Bears at the break 6-5 overall 2-2 in the 'yac.  Dante Langley and Nosa Onabor shared game honors for the Bears with 20 pts each.

Bears off until Jan 8th when they visit Memorial Hall in the 'burgh.

Forgot that the Brockport Golden Eagles had a game on Monday and checking the site I use to get the point spread they weren't listed so it slipped right by me. I would have picked the Golden Eagles to win the game against Washington and Lee by an 83-80 final....and I would have been wrong.

Washington and Lee 75   Brockport State 66  Final score.

The Generals, after trailing by as many as 9 points on several occasions, gained a slight 24-23 lead with 8 minutes left in the first half. They were down 23-14 but used a (gulp) 19-0 run to put the Golden Eagles in their rear view mirror. Brockport got their 23rd point on a layup by last week's YAC Player of the Week, Justin Summers, with 11:55 remaining in the period. The Generals started their big run and Port never scored again until the clock read 5:15, on a jumper by Chris Atkinson. 6 minutes and 40 seconds had elasped in between those Brockport scores.  They didn't do that against Plattsburgh last weekend I can tell you that. ??? Note to Coach Dunne.....I know it's the holidays and all but if your're going to give away presents like that at least give them to a YAC team and not some stranger. Hope that doesn't happen again...even against Plattsburgh the next time we meet. (Two or three minutes without scoring, repeated several times during the game, will be fine. ;D)

The Generals led by as many as 13 points at 38-25 with 3:33 to play. Now it was Port's turn to close the gap as Antonio Alvarez scored the final 8 points of the half on a pair of 3 pointers, followed by a layup and the Golden Eagles headed to the locker room down 38-33.

Brockport came all the way back to tie the game up at 44 all with 13:39 left in the game. The Generals refused to surrender the lead, though, and when crunch time arrived at about the 7:30 mark it was the Golden Eagles who got crunched. Down 56-54 at that point of the game, Port got outscored 9-0 to once again fall behind by double digits. They never got closer than 5 points as the Generals hit 7 of 8 from the line, down the stretch, to close them out.

Justin Summers led the Golden Eagles with 23 points and had a game high 12 boards. He added 3 assists and a pair of blocks.

Chris Atkinson dropped in 13 points, with 6 assists, 3 steals, and 2 rebounds.

Devante Hagins had 10 points, 8 boards, 4 steals, 2 blocks and 1 assists.

Brockport falls to 6-4 (3-1 SUNYAC) and will be off until January 4th when they travel to Alfred University for their final non-conference game at 7:00 PM.

The SUNYAC annouced the Player of the Week last night and it's no surprise that Nicky Bonura was selected after the huge game he had against Old Westbury on Saturday December 15th.  Congratulations to Nicky who gave us his best Stephen Curry imitation with his nine 3 pointers. Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected Cortland senior Nicky Bonura (Mount Kisco, N.Y. / Fox Lane) as its Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week.

Bonura scored a career-high 34 points, including a career-high tying nine three-pointers, in Cortland's 96-76 win at Old Westbury Saturday. He finished 9-of-14 from the arc (11-of-19 overall) and 3-for-3 from the foul line, and also added five rebounds and two steals. His nine three-pointers are one shy of matching the school single-game record. Bonura accounted for half of Cortland's school team record-tying 18 made 3-pointers in the victory.

Magicman.....saw your name on the boards today and read your posts....there are games today?!.  Anyway, your mention of a game with Gallaudet by Brockport brought back some very, very old memories.  The Gallaudet College was in the Wash. I echo Pat's calls to get rid of "dumb" from the lexicon, okay?

Also, their poor record has nothing to do with what you remember of the university. They actually have had some pretty solid teams over the years and have, arguably, one of the top 20 women's players I've seen play (Rhonda Jo Miller - partially responsible for my deep involvement with DIII basketball to this day).

Their football program is actually credited with creating the huddle ... and has existed as a football program since 1883 - though it has had years as a club organization. Also, the big bass drum in college football is thought to have originated with Gallaudet who used to use it for snap count information until about ten years ago (current Stevenson head coach Ed Hottle moved them away from the drum).

I played against Gallaudet when I was a student-athlete. While it was a different environment ... there is no "amazement" they participate. There are very talented people in all walks of life who just happen to be deaf.

Again ... no idea why your "memories" of Gallaudet would lead to some how "explaining" why they have a poor record. The men's team was 20-7 in the 2016-17 season, BTW.

Oh, last note on the Bison: their Assistant Athletic Director for Communications, Sam Atkinson, is this year's men's basketball national committee. He is able hearing, but he is also bilingual in sign. Their women's coach is also on the NCAA Women's Basketball Rules committee.

The individual you are talking about the Maryland was recruiting was the WAY over hyped Tamir Goodman. The "Jewish Jordan" was not nearly as talented as his public relations machine that swooped up not only the local markets, but national ones as well, that he was some how an incredible player. Maryland made arrangements to deal with the Sabbath restrictions, but it turned out Tamir wasn't nearly good enough to play in D1. He transferred after a year to Towson and still never materialized into anything. Unfortunately, Tamir missed a golden opportunity to go to Yeshiva and play there where I think he would have flourished and his college career would have actually turned into something.

Interesting side note to the Goodman story: his high school coach, Harold Katz, was very involved in the Goucher program in the early 2000s (while he was HS coach and after the Goodman experience). His son, Daniel, is a junior and starter at Yeshiva.
