Dec. 29      4 teams back in action after the Christmas break

Fredonia State  @  Utica        4:00 PM      Utica College Basketball Classic.

The Blue Devils need a win badly to get off the schneid. I don't think they will get it today. They get to play the host school of the tournament on the first day of the tournament and that's usually, never a good sign. The oddsmakers know how that works as well and have made Fredonia a 19 point underdog. The Pioneers are 5-2 and want to win the championship of their own tournament. I think they will....starting with the Blue Devils.  Utica 91 Fredonia 67.

Oswego State  @  Emory        4:00 PM     Emory Holiday Classic  The Featured Game of the Day

The Lakers take on the Emory Eagles, a team from the UAA conference that was expected to compete for that league's championship. The Eagles are currently 7-2 and were ranked earlier in the year, as high as #18.  Tomorrow Oswego faces Denison University and a pair of wins this weekend could have the Lakers in the Top 25 when the next poll comes out on January 7th. It will also help the strength of schedule of the SUNYAC if Oswego can put these two in the win column.

Last week Oneonta got a pair of wins against two teams from the SCIAC in California and Plattsburgh got a win against a UAA team. Another win against the UAA would help, since that conference is ranked so highly.

The oddsmakers have made Emory a slim 1 point home favorite in this game. The Lakers are really an unknown quantity at this point as their 9-0 record has come against 7 teams that are .500 or below. It's not their fault that some of the traditional North Country rivals, that they have played for many years, are having down seasons. Their 3 toughest games have come against SUNYAC foes. I think the Lakers are for real and I think they pull off the mild upset, if you want to call it that.   Oswego 80 Emory 75

New Paltz State  @  Medgar Evers        4:00 PM    DR. CAROL V. DE COSTA CLASSIC

The last time the Hawks had a winning record this late in the season was 2011-12 when they reached 6-5 on January 10th 2012. They are presently 4-4 and are favored once again. A win would put them on the plus side of the ledger and give them a little confidence heading into the meat of the SUNYAC schedule. The oddsmakers have them listed as a 9 point road favorite. I think they need to be careful here as the Cougars are capable of pulling off the upset. Still I like the Hawks to win this one... 78-72.

Cortland State  vs  Keystone        6:00 PM    @ St. John Fisher's  WOODCLIFF HOTEL AND SPA TOURNAMENT

The Red Dragons would like to lengthen their winning streak and the Keystone College Giants are next in line. Cortland is riding a 4 game win streak and sports a misleading 6-2 record that is really a 6-1 record, since one of those two losses was to Division I Wagner College. The Giants are looking to go 0-3 in the SUNYAC and join the other pair in the basement. Fortunately for Keystone they will never get to 0-4 since this is the last YAC team they will play this season.  They opened their season with a loss to Oneonta 91-73 and followed that with a loss to Potsdam 81-69. Having another team of Red Dragons beat them by double digits will probably give them a YAC headache that will, most likely, carry over into the next season when they will avoid the YAC like the plague it was (to them).

The oddsmakers have made the Giants a 24 point underdog. They may beat the spread but will lose by double digits.... Cortland 85 Keystone 68.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Cortland opened the game on a 17-0 run and never looked back as the Red Dragons defeated Keystone College, 107-79, during Saturday's opening day of the St. John Fisher Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament. The win is the 400th at Cortland for 24th-year head coach Tom Spanbauer, who is now 400-240 on the Red Dragons' bench and 412-253 in 25 career seasons, including one at Alfred University.
Cortland (7-2) will face St. John Fisher in Sunday's championship game.

Dec. 30

Fredonia  State  vs  Anna Maria        1:00 PM      at Utica College

The Blue Devils might win this game but they are 3 point underdogs according to the oddsmakers. Anna Maria's Mike Rapoza is a beast and will cuse problems. Anna Maria wins a close one 73-68.

Denison  vs  Oswego State at   Emory Holiday Classic @ Emory   University

The Lakers come back in the consolation game and win one to make the trip home easier. The point spread favors Oswego by 12 points. Lakers win 82-72

New Paltz State vs  New Rochelle        2:00 PM   @ Medgar Evers

The Hawks are over .500 and now the goal is to stay that way. Today could find them gaining traction. They are favored in this game by 6 points. Hopefully they can build on yesterday's overtime win.  New Paltz 82 New Rochelle 78.

Cortland State @  St. John Fisher        3:00 PM    Championship of the St. John Fisher Holiday Tournament

The Red Dragons had an easy time of ot yesterday to give Coach Spanbauer his 400th win. The going will be tougher today. The oddsmakers have made Fisher a 3 point favorite. Buffalo State beat them last month but the Cardinals have some nice wins over good teams. Hard to win in Pittsford but I'll take Cortland by an 84-81 final score.

Caz Bombers

Cortland wins 80-78 in OT thanks to some hilariously dumb end of game decisions by Fisher. Rebounding a missed FT with 6 seconds left and the score tied, a Cardinal stood still as a statue as his team screamed at him to get moving, then he hurls it the length of the court for no reason to a Red Dragon, who is then fouled for even less reason.

Final scores from Saturday's action:

Fredonia State 63   Utica College 88

I had the Blue Devils losing to Utica by a 91-67 final. I wasn't too far off on the MOV or the totals. Fredonia was down by 19 points at the break but played better in the 2nd half as they were only outscored 44-38. The 25 point loss hurts though.

Matt Perez came off the bench to lead Fredonia with 14 points and 4 rebounds. Isaiah Ice had 11 points and Bediako Nyasa had 10 points 4 rebounds and 3 assists.

Oswego State 71  Emory 93

Was way off on this one as the Lakers didn't play well and the Eagles did. The turnover battle and 2nd chance points were both heavily in Emory's favor and that was the difference. Brandon Gartland and Quinn Carey both scored 14 points. Joe Sullivan almost had a double-double with 12 points and 9 rebounds, while Tyler Pierre did have a double-double with 11 points 14 rebounds and 3 blocks.
Point guard Liam Sanborn had 9 points with 4 assists and Julien Crittendon came off the bench with 11 points, 3 boards and 2 assists in 12 minutes of floor time.

New Paltz State  98   Medgar Evers  91 in Overtime.

I had the Hawks winning by 6 in regulation...they won by 7 in OT. They won the first half and the Cougars won the 2nd half but New Paltz should have won in regulation. They turned it over with just 7 seconds to play and then after the Cougars missed a layup allowed a putback that sent it to overtime. When Medgar Evers scored right away in the extra session, I was afraid of the big letdown that happens, when a team that's ahead, allows the other team to score and get to overtime. However the Hawks quickly tied it up when Tristan Wissemann scored inside and after the Cougars made 1 of 2 from the foul line, Wissemann buried a 3 pointer to put the Hawks up by 2. The Cougars scored to knot things up again and both teams missed on their next two trips. The Hawks gained the edge when Scott Reisert scored with 1:45 remaining and was fouled but he couldn't convert the freebie. Both teams came up empty again and then the Cougars went to the line for a pair and a chance to tie. The Cougar player missed both free throws giving the Hawks an opportunity they took advantage of. Brandon Scott scored on a layup with 32 seconds left to go giving New Paltz a 4 point lead at 92-88. Needing to score quickly, the Cougars didn't take care of the ball and Jake Passaretti got a steal. Seconds later Corey garcia was fouled and he made both foul shots to put the Hawks up by 6 with 16 seconds left. New Paltz added a little drama when they fouled a Cougar from behind the arc, giving them a chance to get 3 points closer, with the clock off. Sure enough he swished all 3 from the stripe and now The Hawks needed to inbound the ball and make some more free throws. Fortunately they did both of those things and went 4x4 in the last 10 seconds to put this one away.

Tristan Wissemann led the Hawks with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

Jake Passaretti had 18 points, 9 assists and a pair of steals.

Scott Reisert had 17 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

Paddy Parr had a team high 10 rebounds, 8 points and 6 assists.

Cory Garcia had 9 points, 9 rebounds and a pair of helpers.

Cortland 107  Keystone 79

I just copied the post from my friend jdex to save me some time. There wasn't much drama to this game as the Red Dragons were up by 20 points 5 minutes into the game and Coach Spanbauer got his bench players involved early on.

My congratulations to Coach Spanbauer on his milestone 400th Cortland win.

13 different players scored and the Red Dragon leaders were Nicky Bonura with 20 points and Ryan Schmadel with 16.

Final Scores from Sunday's action:

Fredonia State 62    Anna Maria  74

I had the AmCats winning this one 73-68. They got 74 and held the Blue Devils to only 28 points in the 2nd half to win by double digits. Anna Maria was down 34-32 at the break but got 31 points from 2 bench players in the 2nd period who only combined for 4 points in the first half. The teams were tied at 55 with 6:20 left in the game, when a Fredonia turnover triggered the start of a 14-3 run by the AmCats. By the time the run was over, the score was 69-58 and there was only 1:46 left on the clock. During that run the Blue Devils  missed 5 of 6 shots and committed 3 turnovers, along with two fouls. Anna Maria, now up 11, made 5 of 6 from the line to close the game out.

DeQuan Smith was the only Fredonia player to score in double figures and was the leading point getter in the game with 21. He also had 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

Anna Maria got 35 points from their 2 bench players....19 for Angel Perez and 16 for Sidney Limage who also had 9 rebounds.

Big Mike Rapoza almost had a triple-double for the AmCats. He had 15 points, a game high 19 rebounds (his 11th double-double in 13 games) and 8 assists.  He added a pair of blocks and a steal.

Fredonia drops to 0-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference. They will be back in action next week when they host Geneseo State on Tuesday January 8th at 7:30 PM.

Oswego State 50  Denison  61

The Lakers would like a do over for the weekend. Leaving home with a perfect record and a chance to get a little national recognition didn't work out the way they wanted.  They had their chances in Sunday's game against the Big Red from Denison University. The first half featured a number of lead changes with neither team able to gain much of an edge. Oswego was down 5 points early on but came back after 7 minutes of play to go in front 10-8. Six more lead changes and two ties later the Lakers managed to extend their lead to 26-21 with 3:45 left in the period. They missed several chances to build the lead and were outscored 6-2 to end the half but still  managed to be ahead by a 28-27 score.

The 2nd half opened with the Big Red scoring immediately to gain the lead and that started a 10-3 spurt over the next 6 minutes.  Now up 37-31 Denison never let the Lakers get it back to a one possession game. Every Laker basket, and there weren't many, was answered by one from the Big Red and they managed to extend their lead to double digits, when Matt Doyle hit a jumper followed by a 3 pointer to make it 46-36 with 8:44 left in the game. Oswego had only scored 8 points in the half, at that time. The game continued to play out in that manner with Denison slowly extending their lead to 12 points on several occasions and the Lakers never able to cut into it very far.  Denison went 12x30 from behind the arc while the Lakers were only 4x14 from deep. The Lakers have won many games by virtue of their 3 point shooting. This game was one they lost because of the 3 point line. They had a cold shooting night in all areas and if they played Denison again I think they would turn the tables. I wish they would have saved this game for their visit to Memorial Hall here in the 'Burgh. Instead their visits here usually get them quite healthy.  ::) I have a feeling that February 9th will be a very important date for the Cardinals and the Lakers.

Allen Durutovic ked the Lakers with 13 points  and 8 rebounds.

Liam Sanborn had 12 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Joe Sullivan had a double-double of 10 points and 10 boards.

Tyler Pierre had 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Oswego is now 9-2 overall and on top of the YAC with a 4-0 record. The Lakers are back in action on Tuesday, January 8th when they host New Paltz for a 7:30 PM tipoff.

New Paltz 84  New Rochelle 78

I almost nailed this final score as I had the Hawks winning by an 82-78 final. Two free throws by the Hawks' Corey Garcia with 4 seconds left, kept me from a perfect prediction.

The Hawks led for much of the first half in this battle of the "News" by as many as 10 points early on and still up by 6 points with 9 minutes to play in the period. Slowly their lead dissolved and the Blue Angels caught them at 27 all, with 6:17 remaining. Five lead changes later New Rochelle had the lead at the break 38-36.

The teams continued where they left off at halftime as they traded leads 7 times in the first 7 minutes. Finally the Hawks got a little separation when Tristan Wissemann drained a three to give them a lead at 51-49. He followed that up with an offensive rebound and layup on the Hawks next possession after the Blue Angels came up empty. New Paltz got a steal and Wissemann got another layup to put them in front by a 55-49 score, which was the largest lead in the last 17 minutes of play. The teams traded baskets and then a bucket by Nick Paquette followed by another one from Wisseman restored the lead back to double figures at 61-51. When the Hawks' Felix Riascos scored at the 8 minute mark the 11 point lead was the largest of the afternoon at 66-55. The Blue Angels had one more thrust and cut the margin to 3 points with an 8-0 run but Wisseman returned and immediately scored inside followed by a layup from Paddy Parr to make it a 3 possession game once again. The Hawks got a big threeball from Wisseman with 2:21 remaining to bring the lead back to 10 points and New Paltz hit 5 of 6 from the line to close the game out.

Tristan Wissemann led all scorers with 30 points and added 7 rebounds.

Scott Reisert filled up the stat sheet with 14 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists and a block.

Jake Passaretti added 10 points, a pair of assists and 2 steals.

Corey Garcia and Paddy Parr both led the team in rebounds with 10 each. Garcia added 6 points and 5 assists. Parr had a team high 6 assists and 2 points.

Nick Paquette had 8 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists in 19 minutes off the bench.

The Hawks improve to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC. As noted above they will return to action on January 8th with a trip to Oswego.

Cortland 80  St. John Fisher 78

Not too often that the Cardinals of Fisher are 0-2 against the YAC in one season. Nice to see it happen on occasion. Even nicer to see that both YAC wins came on Fisher's home court. That may have never happened before in SUNYAC history....2 Wins in Pittsford in one year, that is... (Maybe Fran Elia or jdex would know the answer to that...off the top of your head....but don't waste your time looking it up, guys)

My forecast of an 84-81 Cortland win was pretty close to the final tally and MOV. I didn't have it going to overtime but needed the extra period to get close to the total.

Early going was fairly close as the teams traded leads until Cortland became the more assertive team. Led by their 3 top scorers the Red Dragons got 5 points each from Nicky Bonura, Justin Cooper, and Kenny Charles to go on a 15-6 run. It turned a 7-10 deficit into a 22-16 lead with 10:40 on the clock. The Cardinals responded with a 14-0 blast of their own to open up a 30-22 lead. Keeping this a game of runs meant that Cortland was up to bat and they didn't disappoint. The Red Dragons ripped off 10 points in a row on their way to a 19-4 explosion to go into the locker room up 41-34. Six different players scored during that run led by Bonura with 5 points and Cooper with 4.

Fisher scored quickly after the break on an old fashioned 3 point play by Ryan Henderson. The zebras called a foul on Kenny Charles who had 3 called against him in the first half. So now, 11 seconds into the second half, he gets his 4th foul and takes a seat. Zach Lydon comes in and promptly scores and then, after Fisher cuts the lead to 2 points, he gets an offensive rebound and putback, followed by a defensive rebound and a 3 point play of his own. Lydon has 7 points in about 2 and a half minutes. Bonura then stole the ball and buried a three to boost the lead back to 10 points at 51-41 with 16:45 left to play. But this game was far from over.

Fisher took a time out to regroup and then fired off 9 straight points to make it 51-50 with 14:28 left to play. Cooper hit a jumper for Cortland but Fisher got a 3 pointer to tie the game once again. Now it was the Cardinals forging into the lead and a 9-3 spurt made the score 62-56 with 9:39 left to play. Cortland responded with another 12-2 run and went back in front 68-64. The teams struggled on the offensive end down the stretch as they both had trouble scoring from the field. They were tied at 72 with 3:44 left in regulation but neither team scored another point and they both had numerous chances to do so. In fact during the final 7+ minutes of regulation the Red Dragons went 1x8 from the field and Fisher was 2x12.

Cortland scored first in overtime but Fisher got back to back dunks from James Leone to go ahead 76-74. Cortland missed a 3 point attempt got the rebound and missed another long one. Fisher went to the line and made a pair to go up by 4 points with 1:26 to go. Charles went to the line for Cortland and made 1 of 2, but Cooper got the offensive rebound and the team took a timeout. Charles made up for the free throw miss by draining a 3 pointer from the corner to tie the game at 78 with 1:05 left to play. Fisher missed on their end and Cortland rebounded and took another timeout with 38 seconds left. The play for the Red Dragons was a three point attempt by Bonura and he missed the shot which was rebounded by Fisher with just a few ticks left. The Fisher player threw the ball down court but it was stolen by Ryan Schmadel who was fouled with 1 second left. He calmly made both foul shots and Cortland claimed the close win. This was a repeat of last years game that took place in Cortland and won by the Red Dragons in a thriller, 70-69.

Justin Cooper captured scoring honors for the game by dropping in 20 points and securing a nice double-double with 16 rebounds. He added 4 assists and a steal in 43 minutes on the court

Nicky Bonura had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist in 42 minutes of play.

Kenny Charles had 14 points ,6 rebounds, a steal and a block.

Zach Lydon also had a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Ryan Schmadel had 10 points, 2 assists and 2 steals.

Cortland improves to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the YAC and will complete their non-conference schedule when they travel to Radnor, Pennsylvania on Friday January 4th to take on the Cabrini Cavaliers at 7:00 PM.

Not sure if there is a  Player of the Week in the SUNYAC this week but the short list probably has Tristan Wisseman from New Paltz, along with Justin Cooper and Nicky Bonura from Cortland on it.

Jan. 4  Two teams in action today wrapping up the non-conference portion of their schedule. League games return on Friday

Brockport State  @  Alfred        7:00 PM

The Golden Eagles look to wind up their non-conference slate with a trip over to Mayberry to visit the Alfred Saxons. Brockport's modest winning streak came to an end last time out when they were defeated by Washington and Lee. Port has been in every game and their 6-4 record could easily be better than that. Their signature win was a defeat of, at the time, #10 Plattsburgh State in a 79-78 barnburner. The Saxons come into this game with a gaudy 7-1 record but the competition, for the most part,  has been on the weak side. The toughest team they have played was Geneseo State and the host Knights beat them 89-73 giving them their one loss.

The oddsmakers have made Brockport a slim 3 point favorite.   I think Brockport  is better than Geneseo so I believe they'll win by double digits.  Port 93 Alfred 78.

Cortland State  @  Cabrini        7:00 PM

Cortland is on a 6 game winning streak and is 8-1 in Division III with their only blemish a loss to Brockport back on November 30th. They are coming off an overtime win against St. John Fisher another Empire 8 conference team. The SUNYAC has been tough on the E8 teams this season as we are a combined 8-2 against them. Cabrini is from the AEC (Atlantic East Conference) and is struggling this year as they are only 2-10. The oddsmakers have installed Cortland  as a 10 point road favorite. That seems about right. Cortland takes this one by an 84-73 final.

Excuse me -- between that and the PM I was forwarded, you are 200% out of line, The Law Firm. But that's OK. I can shut your hole for you for a while.

Brockport State 84 Alfred 76

Had to go  into town for an emergency visit to my dentist and didn't get home until almost 7 PM. I knew the D3hoops scoreboard said that the 2 games involving SUNYAC teams both had 7 PM tipoff times. I hurriedly looked at the teams and their past performances to make my picks and posted them at a little after 7 PM. I went to pull up the video for both games only to discover that the Brockport game was already over. Seems like the game started at 5 PM instead of 7 PM. I did have a decent prediction as I had Brockport winning by a 93-78 final score. The Golden Eagles were up by 9 at the half but couldn't put the Saxons away as Alfred hung in there until the bitter end. Port was up by 11 at 69-58 with 8 minutes left in the game but a 12-5 run brought the Saxons within 4 points at 74-70 with 3:26 remaining. That was as close as they got as Brockport closed the door and got the win.

Chris Atkinson led all scorers as he pumped in 21 points for Brockport. He added 7 assists, 4 steals and 2 rebounds.

Antonio  Alvarez in his first start at Brockport made the most of his opportunity with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Both marks were career highs

Devante  Hagins just missed a double-double as he scored 15 points and grabbed 9 boards. He also had 4 steals, 2 assists and a pair of blocks.

Danny Ashley had 10 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists in 25 minutes of court time off the bench.

Alfred had the better shooting percentages and won the rebounding battle but had 22 turnovers which led to 27 points for the Golden Eagles. Port only had 12 turnovers that gave Alfred 12 points.

Brockport improves to 7-4 overall (3-1 SUNYAC) and went 4-3 in their non-conference slate. They are back in action on Tuesday, January 8th, when they travel to the Queen City to take on  the Buffalo State Bengals at 7:30 PM.
