Cortland made school-record 21 shots from 3-point range, including 15 in the opening half enroute to 30-point halftime lead, and RDragons cruised at New Paltz. Cortland's previous school record for 3-pointers in a game was 18 on four occasions, including earlier this season at Old Westbury.

     N. Bonura matched his career high with nine 3-pointers. He finished 9-of-12 from the arc, with six of those makes coming on seven attempts in the first half. Nine RDragons contributed to the 3-point onslaught. Corts went 15-of-23 from longrange in the first half.

Jan. 16  Only game in town tonight.

#7 Hamilton  @  Geneseo State        7:30 PM

#7 Hamilton rolls into Geneseo tonight looking to start another winning streak. The Continentals won their first 13 games before they lost to Wesleyan 5 days ago. They came back with a win against Connecticut College on Saturday to stretch their record to 14-1.

Geneseo is in a funk having lost 5 in a row and they will be hard pressed to end that streak tonight. They haven't won in over a month and the oddsmakers have them listed as a 17 point home dog.  Last year the Knights had Hamilton on the ropes late but let them escape. Tonight they won't get the Continentals close to the ropes. Hamilton wins this one 87-70.

Hamilton 68  Geneseo 43

This was a close game for about 11 minutes of the first half. Hamilton was down 14-13 with 9:42 left in the half and turned up the heat on the Knights. A 17-4 run over the next 6 minutes put the Continentals up by a dozen at 30-18 and they never let Geneseo back in the game. Hamilton ended the half with another burst and had a 41-23 lead at the break. The lead kept growing in the 2nd half and reached as much as 31 points.

The Knights were led by Elijah Wingfield with 10 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals in 19 minutes off the bench. Joseph Harclerode III led the team with 8 rebounds.

Geneseo drops to 4-10 overall (1-6 YAC) and will visit travel partner Brockport on Saturday for a 4:00 PM matchup.

Oops. Yes.  That happens every now and then although you are more than welcomed to come brave the projected 20 inches of snow this weekend to visit the Queen City and take him some hoops in the premier SUNYAC arena !

Go BENGALS

Seems like a ton of New York and New England is slated for 12-20 inches of snow!  I hope teams have safe travels to and from and can get the games in on Saturday.

It's a big weekend Allstar.  Back to back games against two of the top 4, starting with first place Oswego. Then it's on to Cortland who could still end up in first place when it's all said and done. 4 decent teams at the top of the YAC and I expect it to be a battle to the final weekend between them. Those two plus Brockport will still have to come to our house though. Hoping the worst we do over the weekend is split.

Jan. 18     Four games, all in conference action, on the slate for tonight.

New Paltz State  @  Fredonia State        6:00 PM

The Hawks are currently in a playoff position. Beating teams below them in the standings is paramount if they want to stay there. In sole possession of 6th place, at the moment, a loss tonight could drop them down to 8th. Fredonia needs a win for all of the same reasons. Currently in 8th place a win would put them in the 6th spot.

The oddsmakers have made the Hawks a 5 point road favorite in this one. Neither team has had much success over the past 5 years but New Paltz has won 6 of the past 10 matchups. I've seen both teams play and think the Hawks will win a close one. New Paltz 74 Fredonia 70.

#15 Plattsburgh State  @  Oswego State        7:30 PM    The Featured Game of the Day

Another battle for the top spot with the winner taking over first place if only for a day. Oswego wants to keep that unblemished conference record intact, of course, as well as protect their home court. The Cardinals don't want to fall 2 games off the pace. Plattsburgh beat the Lakers 3 times last year which was a rarity as these teams usually take turns beating each other. Two years ago the Lakers took a pair from Plattsburgh by a total of 3 points. The series is equally as tight, with the Cardinals holding a slight 7-6 edge over the last 5 years.

The oddsmakers have made Oswego a 4 point home favorite which seems logical based on their undefeated home record of 8-0 so far this year. I think the Cardinals could put an end to that streak and see a final score of 83-79 with Plattsburgh on top.

Oneonta State  @  Buffalo State        7:30 PM

The best way to pick the winner of this game is to flip a coin. Even my crystal ball is to fogged up to see the outcome. Both teams need a win in the worst way. Both teams are coming off tough, last second losses. The Bengals have been the victims of more close games than anyone in the conference. They lost 3 games last week by a total of 8 points and their other 6 losses are by 7 points or less. I think they are the best 9 loss team in the country. The Red Dragons led Oswego for a large part of their game on Tuesday night only to come up short when the Lakers hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer.

Now the point spread favors the host Bengals by the slimmest of margins...that solitary single point...making this game the coin flip I suggested at the beginning. So that's what I did. Buffalo State called heads and won when George showed his face. The final score will be Buffalo State 87 Oneonta 84.

Potsdam State  @  Cortland State        7:30 PM

The Bears sit all alone in the 5th place playoff position by a full 2 games. They haven't been that high for quite some time. They must be dizzy from the unaccustomed heights. No need to worry though, a visit to Cortland will usually bring you down to earth. In order for the Bears to truly take the next step they need to start winning against the perennial top 4 teams. They're still a few rungs of the ladder below those guys but an occasional upset is quite possible. Tough to do on the road, though, especially against Cortland.

These Red Dragons got handled pretty good by visiting Oswego last weekend so they won't want to lose a 2nd straight home game. They did get back into the win column when they traveled downstate to easily dispose of New Paltz on Tuesday. They've owned the Bears recently going 9-1 over the last 5 years, but that 1 loss was last year in Potsdam, not on their home court. Still it gives the Bears some hope, knowing they beat, basically, the same team that they will play tonight.

The oddsmakers have Cortland listed as a 10 point favorite, the Bears will be hard pressed to keep it closer, but I think they will, just not much closer.  Cortland wins this one by a final score of 81-73.

Plattsburgh State leads Oswego State 48-45 at the half.

Jon Patron with 16 points, Brandon Johnson with 15 points and Isaiah Hill with 9 for the Cardinals.

Tyler Pierre with 14 points, and 3 other Lakers with 6 each for Oswego.

Upset Alert:

Potsdam State leads Cortland State 33-26 at the break.

Nosa Onabor with 11 points for the Bears. Dante Langly with 8.

Justin Cooper leads the Red Dragons with 8.

Oneonta State 74 Buffalo State 70

Once again the Bengals come up just short and lose another close game. Down 72-70 they get 2 chances to tie or grab he lead in the last 40 seconds but come up empty both times.

Onenonta gets 20 points each from Joseph Bull and Andres Rivera. They both have double-doubles as Bull grabs 14 rebounds and has 3 steals. Rivera has 10 boards along with 4 steals. Kevin Mackin adds 12 points.

Buffalo State gets 12 points from Dom Grayer, Kay Grant and Jordan Christopher. Kareem holmes has 10 points. Grant led the team with 11 rebounds.

Potsdam 78-Cortland 69 at Cortland.  Really changes the 3-4-5 mix in the standings.  Bears to Oswego tomorrow in a major blizzard...

Oswego 86  Plattsburgh State 84

The Lakers get a basket from Liam Sanborn with 4 seconds left on the clock to give them a win over the Cardinals in an exciting game at Max Ziel Gym.

A tale of two halves as the Cardinals led for the entire first period by as much as 12 points before the Lakers came storming back to close within 3 at the break. The 2nd half was just the reverse as Oswego opened the period on an 18-7 run that gave them the lead at 63-55 with 14:13 left to play. They would lead for the next 7 plus minutes by a 4-8 point margin, until Plattsburgh finally caught them with a quick 8-0 run of their own. Jon Patron made a 3 point play, then after Oswego came up empty, he came down and scored again inside. The Lakers missed again and Chris Middleton hit a 3 pointer to tie the game at 75 with 7:12 remaining. Two lead changes and 3 ties would take place to set the stage for Sanborn's winning bucket which came off a nice drive to the right after Allen Durutovic set a screen to free him up. Plattsburgh made the switch too late and Sanborn threw up a floater high off the glass to prevent the Cardinals Ian Howard from blocking the shot. The Cardinals quickly inbounded and had a long 3 point attempt that was off the mark.

Excellent basketball game to watch and one that I'll look forward to when the teams go at it in Plattsburgh in 3 weeks on February 9th.
The Lakers were a bit better with their shooting percentages from the field and from long range while the Cardinals were better from the stripe.  Plattsburgh won the battle of the boards by a slight margin 31-27. Both teams had 4 steals, 9 turnovers and a block. The Lakers shared the ball well and had 18 assists to a dozen for the Cardinals. I thought the ability of Oswego to get some easy layups, off some nice passes, was a key to the game. That happened more than I wanted to see it.

All five starters for Owego hit double figures led by Tyler Pierre with 22 points.
Brandon Gartland had 18 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.
Joe Sullivan had 13 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.
Quinn Carey had 13 points, 3 rebounds and a block.
Liam Sanborn just missed a double-double with 11 points and 9 assists. He added 2 boards and 2 steals and of course the winning basket.

Jon Patron led the Cardinals with 28 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists.
Brandon Johnson had 18 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal.
Chris Middleton had 14 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assists.
Ian Howard got another double-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 2 steals. It was his 4th double-double of the season.
Isaiah Hill had 9 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds and a block.

Oswego strengthens their hold on first place by upping their record to 13-2 overall and 8-0 in the SUNYAC. They will take on Potsdam State tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 PM.

Plattsburgh State drops to 12-3 overall and 6-2 in the YAC. They will travel down to Cortland for a 4:00 PM contest tomorrow.
