I was looking at the Potsdam Bears upcoming schedule and had to do a double take on the game next Tuesday 11/19/19.  It says that my bears are playing Albany.  It's been a long time since this two rivals have played.  I'm sure it will not be like the Doc and Jerry battles but it would be fun if the Bears knock off a Division I program

bearnation,
In the words of Steven Tyler....Dream On...Dream On. ;D

Seriously, though. I went down to Albany a couple of years ago to watch Oneonta State play Albany in an exhibtion game. (They played them 2 years in a row when Coach Conover first took over the Red Dragon program in 2016)  I said at the time I would consider it a victory if Oneonta could score in the 50's and hold the Great Danes in the 90's. I believe they did that if memory serves me correctly.  I'm hoping my alma mater can do the same this time around.  At any rate it will be a fun time for the Bears to play in the SEFCU Arena in front of thousands of fans, regardless of the outcome.

November 13   One game on the schedule for today

New Paltz  @  Farmingdale State

Farmingdale State is the reigning champion of the Skyline Conference and has went to the NCAA tournament twice in the last 3 seasons. They were 20-8 last year with 18 of those wins coming against conference teams. They were only 2-4 in non-conference games but those 4 losses were all quality opponents, Ramapo, New Jersey City, Wesleyan, and Rochester. They all made the NCAA tournament except Wesleyan and those Cardinals posted a 16-9 mark. Farmingdale returns 7 players from a 10 man rotation and were chosen to come in 2nd place in their division of the Skyline which is now a North and South Division this year. The 3 players they lost however were the top 3 scorers on the team and their totals added up to 42 ppg which is exactly half of the 84 ppg the team averaged last year. Those 3 also accounted for 40 % of the team's rebounds. Still the Rams will have 2 starters and several other players back to give New Paltz some problems.

The oddsmakers have made Farmingdale State a 4 point favorite in this game  but I like the way the Hawks opened the season and I think they can win this one. I'll take New Paltz to win 83-80.

The Rams got 15 points from Troy Feeney and  7 points from Anthony Miller Jr. Four other players have 6 points each.

Farmingdale State 93  New Paltz 90

Hawks could have won this game and had several chances to make the go ahead bucket with just seconds on the clock but came up short  in both instances. They fought back from a 10 point deficit at 61-51 with 14:49  left to play to eventually grab a short lived lead at 66-65 with 11 minutes remaining. The Rams regained the lead on their next possession and remained in front by 1 to 6 points over the next 9 minutes. With 2 minutes to play the Hawks trailed 87-81 but scored 6 straight points to tie the game and had a chance to take the lead with 44 seconds left. However another turnover resulted in a Hawk foul and the Rams went to the line and made 1 of 2. The Rams then got lucky and got the rebound off the missed free throw, resulting in another foul called on New Paltz. Farmingdale made them both and now led 90-87 with 39 seconds to go. The Hawks were fouled on thier possession but only made 1 of 2 at the line. They fouled immediately on the inbound pass and the Rams made another pair of free throws, to extend the lead to 4 points with just 26 seconds to play. Tristan Wissemann scored on a layup for New Paltz and the Hawks called a timeout with 17 ticks left. They quickly fouled the Rams when play resumed and the Rams gave New Paltz a golden opportunity when they missed both free throws. The Hawks had the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead with a three pointer, but came up empty when they missed the layup and a foul was called against them with 7 seconds left. The Rams made the first and missed the second leaving the Hawks with a chance to tie it but their three point attempt was off the mark and the Rams came away with the win.

It was a great game to watch and the Hawks played well. They might have won if the foul calls were a little more even but the Hawks were 9x16 from the line, while Farmingdale was 31x48. Take away the 3 fouls (6 free throws for the Rams) that New Paltz needed to make in the final 45 seconds (because the score was 88-87 with 43 seconds left and there was no need to foul prior to that) and the Rams still had 42 free throws...26 more than the Hawks. 31 fouls were called on New Paltz, only 17 on Farmingdale. The Hawks had 3 players foul out in this game. Those 3 players scored 54 points in their win last Saturday. Tonight they only had 34 between them.

Tristan Wissemann captured scoring honors with 27 points. He added 3 assists 2 steals and 2 rebounds.
Jake Passaretti had 16 points with 4 assists, 2 steals and 2 rebounds.
RJ Meyers-Turner had 12 points and a pair of assists in 21 minutes off the bench.
Scott Reisert had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Isaiah Bien-Aise was the top rebounder in the game and just missed a double-double with 12 rebounds and 8 points.

Troy Feeney led 3 players in double digits for the Rams. He had 26 points and was also their leading rebounder as he completed his double-double with 11 boards. Anthony Miller jr. had 19 points and Hunter Schenkel added 13.

The Hawks shot  39.8% from the field (35x88), 36.7% from 3 point land (11x30) and 56.3% from the line (9x16)

The Rams were 44.6% from the field (29x65),  22.2% from downtown (4x18) and    64.6% from the stripe (31x48)

THe Hawks lost the rebounding battle 55-47 but mainly because they took 23 more shots than the Rams giving Farmingdale a chance to grab more defensive rebounds. New Paltz only committed 12 turnovers to 18 for the Rams.

New Paltz is now 1-1 and will be off until next Wednesday, November 20th when they travel to Troy, NY to take on the Gators of Sage  College at 7:00 PM.

Fredonia State 91  D'Youville 88  in overtime        Game from Tuesday Night

The Blue Devils come from 10 points down with less than 5 minutes to play against the Spartans but couldn't get the game winner to go in at the buzzer. They went to overtime and D'Youville grabbed the early lead but the Blue Devils got a jumper from Dydy Bryan to tie it up and after each team came up empty in their next few possessions, Adam Braniecki made 3 of 4 from the stripe to give the Blue Devils the lead at 83-80. Fredonia missed their next 2 shots, while the Spartans got a layup and went 1 of 2 from the line in their next 2 trips down the floor to tie the game at 83 with 1:28 to go. De'Quan Smith then hit the biggest shot of the night as he scored inside with 1:12 to play and the Spartans missed a 3 pointer on their end. Braniecki got the rebound, got fouled and made them both to make it a 2 possession game at 87-83 with 50 seconds to go. The Spartans  went to the line, made 1 of 2 and fouled Smith with 28 seconds left. He made them both and stretched the lead to 5 points. The Spartans missed again and fouled Bryan who made 1 of 2 to make it 90-84 with 15 seconds left. At that point the worst thing that can happen did and Fredonia fouled the Spartans as the player drained a shot from long distance....the dreaded 4 point play and after the made free throw it was now 90-88. Once again the Spartans put Bryan on the line with 4 seconds left. Again he made 1 of 2 to guarantee they wouldn't lose on a three pointer. However, I'm guessing there was no one too close to the shooter for the Spartans, who took that final shot, which, luckily for Fredonia, was off the mark, allowing the Blue Devils to gain a measure of revenge over last years' loss to the Spartans.

Blue Devils:
De'Quan Smith was the game's high scorer with 26 points and 6 rebounds.

Dydy Bryan was right behind with 23 points. He was the leading rebounder in the game with 9 rebounds. He added 4 assists and 2 steals in his first game as a Blue Devil.

Moussa Samassa had 14 points and 8 rebounds.

Tyler Roberts had 12 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists.

Kreem George came off the bench to add 8 points 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in 24 minutes of court time as he had a successful beginning in his Blue Devil debut.

Spartans:
D'Youville got 23 points from Grant Beyer along with 3 rebounds.

Devon Darrell  had 18 points 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

Juan Miguel Rosales  had 16 points and led the Spartans with 8 rebounds.

Fredonia shot 31x74 from the field (41.9%), 7-22 from the arc (31.8) and 22x29 from the foul line (41.9%)

D'Youville was   26x59 from the field (44.1%),  11x28 from downtown (39.3%) and 25x35 from the line (71.4%)

The Blue Devils won the battle of the boards with a 42-26 margin but had 16 turnovers to 12 for the Spartans.

Fredonia will be back in action on Friday, Nov.15th when they take on Vassar College in the  MIKE DALEY MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT being held at Nazareth College. Game time is 6:00 PM. Nazareth will take on Hunter College at 8:00 PM. The winners will play in the championship game on Saturday, Nov.16th at 3:00 PM. The losers will play in the conslolation game at 1:00 PM.

Nov. 15                Seven games for the SUNYAC scheduled for tonight. Four of those teams....Oswego, Plattsburgh, Oneonta and Cortland are hitting the court to open their season.

Ithaca    vs    Oswego State  at Elmira College        5:30 PM

Both of these teams are looking to do well in their respective conferences. Ithaca, now in their 2nd year as a Liberty League member, after leaving the Empire 8 conference, has hopes of winning a league championship, after making the playoffs and losing to league champion, Skidmore, in the semi-finals to end last season. The Bombers return 8 players who averaged double digit minutes last season including 3 starters. They also get back a potential 4th starter,  6'5" Senior guard Jake Mitchell who only played in 8 games last year but started in 5 of those games. Riley Thompson a six foot Senior guard led Ithaca with 472 points last year and will get help from Sebastian Alderete, a 6'5" Senior guard who had 445 points last season along with 5.4 rpg.

Oswego State returns 3 starters from last year's SUNYAC Champions, who made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and ended the year with a 24-6 record. They return 6'3" Senior guard Brandan Gartland (3rd team all conference) who averaged 13.0 ppg and 4.2 rpg and floor leader Liam Sanborn a 6 foot Junior guard who was a SUNYAC 1st team All Conference performer. Sanborn averaged 12.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg and 6.2 assists per game. The 3rd member of the Lakers' triumvirate is 6'5" Senior forward Joe Sullivan who averaged 10 ppg and 7.4 rpg. Oswego had a short bench last year and return just 4 players who had significant court time but the addition of 2 transfers and 11 underclassmen will hopefully provide the necessary reinforcements to back up the returning veterans.

The oddsmakers have made the Lakers a 5 point favorite in this game, but I think it might be a bit closer. I'm taking the Lakers to win a close one 78-75.

Fredonia State  vs  Vassar        6:00 PM         @ Nazareth College ;D

The Blue Devils could match last season's win total with a W in tonight's game but the Brewers return enough firepower that will give Fredonia a tough time to start a win streak. Vassar is playing their first game so maybe that will give the Blue Devils a slight leg up since they've already got those first game jitters out of the way. Still the experts think that Vassar is the better team here and have made them a 6 point favorite. I had the Blue Devils in their opener but I'm going to go with the Brewers in this one. Fredonia hangs in there but comes up a bit short and falls by a 79-75 score.

Farmingdale State  vs  Plattsburgh State        7:30 PM  @ Hartwick College    V LS LS

Lots of changes at Plattsburgh this fall. Coach Tom Curle is now an athletic director at William Peace College down south and Mike Blaine is the new head coach of the Cardinals. And he will certainly have his work cut out for him. The Cardinals lost their entire starting five which included 2 time SUNYAC Player of the Year Jon Patron and All Conference performers, Chris Middleton and Brandon Johnson.

Coach Blaine wasn't hired until the 3rd week of September so he was already behind the other coaches in the YAC. He had to hire an assistant, learn about his players, try to find the right combinations and move his family to a new city. Those were just a few of the obstacles in the way. Now it's time to open the season and the Cardinals will be shorthanded with some players still rehabbing some injuries.

Farmingdale State will pose some problems for Plattsburgh as they have a solid team led by 6'5"  Senior guard/forward Troy Feeney. They like to play an up tempo game and have good size as they start 3 other forwards that are 6'6", 6'5", and 6'4". Their point guard is a 5'7" dynamo Anthony Miller who had 19 the other night against New Paltz. Feeney had 26 points and 11 rebounds as they beat the Hawks 93-90.

Plattsburgh will counter with 6'4" Senior guard Nick DeAngelis who is the Cardinals top returning scorer with 9.0 ppg last year. Adam Jaquish, a 6'7" Senior who averaged 3.8 ppg and 4.3 rpg  will also be counted on as he now becames the Cardinals main inside guy but he may not be available for the first few games. Travis Cox, a 6'1" Junior guard, has shown he has the ability to be a solid starter and Jeremy Eisenman could see extended minutes that will showcase his shooting ability.

The oddsmakers have Plattsburgh listed as a 7 point in this game but I'll be surprised if the Cardinals can come away with a win here. I think the Rams will be a handful and see them coming away with the win. Farmingdale 82 Plattsburgh 74. But I sure hope I'm wrong.

Alvernia  @  Oneonta        7:30 PM

The Red Dragons return everyone and will be in the thick of the SUNYAC race all season. Alvernia loses several of their top players but brings back a solid group of returning lettermen. The Golden Wolves from the MAC Commonwealth Conference were middle of the pack last season and will probably be in a similar spot this season.  The point spread has the Red Dragons favored by 10 points. I think they win by a few more. Oneonta 88 Alvernia 75 .

Running out of time so these will be quick picks

Wilson  @  Geneseo        8:00 PM

The Knights regroup after the loss to Rochester.  Wilson already 0-2 so someone will get their first win of the season tonight. I'll take the Knights to beat the Phoenix. Oddsmakers have Geneseo favored by 4 points. Sounds about right. Geneseo 76   Wilson 70.

Medaille  @  Buffalo State        8:00 PM

The Mavericks put up a pretty good fight against Wooster the other night. Buffalo State fell to Nazareth. I think the Bengals will be tested again tonight but this time come away with the win. Oddsmakers have them favored by 5 points, I think they win by a 76-74 final

Cortland  @  SUNY-Purchase        8:00 PM

Cortland opens their season on the road and they are favored by 6 points to grab the win. The Panthers already played their opener and lost to Sage by 4. I think Cortland wins this one 80-70.

Oswego leads Ithaca 48-36 at halftime.

Brandan Gartland with a big first half for the Lakers as he tosses in 16 points on 5x8 shooting. 4 of those field goals were from downtown, including one as the period came to an end.  Jeremiah Sparks has 9 points and 4 rebounds. Joe Sullivan has 7 points and 5 rebounds. Liam Sullivan 4 pts and a assists. Lakers firing on all cylinders.

Ithaca gets 11 points from Skylar Sinon on 5x8 shoting. Sebastian Alderete and Riley Thompson both had 8 points.

Plattsburgh State game tips off in a few minutes. Cardinals will start 3 freshmen.  Not sure if I have ever witnessed that before. I don't think so.

magicman

Plattsburgh State trails Farmingdale State 47-45 at the half.

The Cardinals were down 27-13 at one point and got a huge first half from Travis Cox who scored 19 points. Cards also got a big lift when Nick DeAngelis came off the bench and scored 10 points with 3 boards and a pair of assists

Farmingdale State got 13 points and 4 rebounds from Hunter Schenkel. Tron Feeney added 10 points.
