Brockport State with some good news on the football front as the Golden Eagles come back from a 14-6 deficit to defeat Western new England by a 33-28 final score and advance to the next round of the NCAA football playofffs.

Union College the Liberty League representative also came from behind to defeat Case Western Reserve 24-21.

Nice to have two New York DIII schools still alive in the round of 16.

Back to hoops.

Geneseo defeats Houghton 86-64.

Easy win for the Knights as they jumped out to a 15-2 lead and kept their foot down all game long. The lead reached 22 points at 39-17 with 3:47 to play and they were up 29 points at the break. Not a very competitive contest.

Nov. 25                                      Just a single game today on the schedule.

Plattsburgh State    at    Skidmore        7:00 PM

These two teams will meet for the 6th time in the last 6 years, with 4 of those games taking place on the Thoroughbreds home court. Plattsburgh owns a 3-2 record against Skidmore winning twice in Plattsburgh and in the initial game in Saratoga back in 2014. Skidmore's two wins were both on their home court. One thing that's different from the past, in today's game ....the Thoroughbreds have never been winless when taking the floor against Plattsburgh. Usually it's the other way around and Skidmore enters the game on a roll or undefeated but they are 0-3 this season and still looking for that elusive first win. Graduation hit both teams quite heavy with Plattsburgh losing even more than the Ponies lost. One player that's not at Skidmore this season, who they didn't lose to graduation, is Junior guard Noah Meren. The leading scorer on last year's team (21.4 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 3 assists per game), has taken his talents to Division I Brown University and his loss will have a huge effect on the fortunes of the Thoroughbreds. Meren will sit out this year at Brown and have 2 years of eligibility remaining. Skidmore returns 2 starters and 4 members of their rotation from last year.

Without Meren, I don't think Skidmore will win the Liberty League championship like they did last season, but they will be in the mix for a playoff berth.  I see them finishing somewhere from 3rd to 5th place. The 3 losses they have this year, all came against decent teams. They opened the season with a 66-56 loss to Hartwick (5-1), who beat SUNYAC contender Oneonta last week. They dropped their 2nd game to Stevens Tech, 67-55, who is 4-0 with a win over New Jersey City, a team getting support in the Top 25 poll. On Saturday Skidmore hosted #13 Middlebury (5-0) (who will probably move into the Top 10 when the next Top 25 poll comes out). The Panthers beat the Ponies 73-56, as Middlebury broke open a close game midway through the first half to lead by a dozen points at the break. Skidmore played them on fairly even terms in the 2nd period, losing that half by only 5 points. Middlebury is loaded and will challenge for the NESCAC title this year.

Some of you who read this board on a regular basis may remember a player from 2016-17 and 2017-18 who played for Geneseo by the name of Tommy Eastman. He was an all conference performer his sophomore season and did quite well as a freshman also. He did not return to Geneseo last season and took the year off but has now returned to college and is at Middlebury. He is currently coming off the bench and is the 5th leading scorer on their team. He started for Geneseo, averaging 14 ppg and 10 rpg. He should be starting for Middlebury and may end up as one but they are so loaded with returning players, that he may not see a start until next seaon. Plattsburgh has to play Middlebury on January 2nd over there, where I'm sure we'll see more of Mr. Eastman and will find a tough game waiting for us.

The Cardinals will have their hands full today with Skidmore. We have struggled down there in our last two trips losing by double figures both times. If we play like we did against SUNY-Poly we'll get blown out again. We need to work on our shot selection and find the open man. We have some good shooters but need them taking shots without a guy in their face. The point spread favors Skidmore by just a single point. I don't believe that's enough. The Throughbreds have played tougher competition than the Cardinals have faced and they have more experience. I think that will provide them with an edge that we will struggle to overcome. I can't remember when the last time occured, that I didn't pick my Cardinals to win, but I think we're going to come out on the short end of this one. I sure hope I'm wrong but I can see Skidmore winning this one by a 68-63 final score.

Good Morning D3 Hoops board--The Scooterman is alive and well down here in Tampa, Florida and ready for a great season of basketball from my SUNYAC teams. I have been on hiatus from the board but have been paying attention to the SUNYAC's. I see my buddy, Tom Curle, has left P-State for a new position.(Congrats to him) I have watched the first three B-port games and see they will be very competitive again this season. I will be attending their Mauro Panaggio Invitational games in Daytona Beach in a few weeks and looking forward to seeing Coach Dunne, Coach Clarke and Coach Johnston. It is great to be back!!!! Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Out of the clear blue of the southern sky comes..........Scooterman. I wouldn't say you were on hiatus from the boards, I would say you were lost and presumed missing since it's been approximately 4 years since you were last heard from.

Now if you could only locate your fellow Brockport poster pg-04 who has also been missing for a few years. I thought maybe you took another doo-wop cruise around the world and this time brought pg-04 with you.

Welcome Back Scooterman

Definitely a better board when folks from around the Yac stay engaged.

Plattsburgh trails Skidmore 32-31 at the half.

Skidmore jumps out to an early 15-6 lead but Plattsburgh, behind Travis Cox and Nick DeAngelis, slowly chips away at the deficit and gets within a single possession at 21-19 with 8 minutes left in the period. The Cards finally get a lead at 29-28 on an Axel Rodriduez layup and the teams fight it out to the end of the period.

Plattsburgh's Travis Cox leads all scorers with 12 points. DeAngelis has 7.

Ryan Murunge leads Skidmore with 10 points.

Magic, you are truly Magic, you called 68-63 and it wound up 64-60, not too shabby.

Plattsburgh 60  Skidmore 64

Sometimes I hate it when I'm right. Tonight was one of those nights. I didn't think my Cardinals would win this game but after watching them play Skidmore to a first half standstill the possibility of getting a W looked promising. The Cards hung in there when Skidmore threatened to put them away early on and then opened the 2nd half with an 8 to 2 burst that gave them a 5 point lead at 39-34. The Throroughbreds came back and tied the game at 41 with 12:28  left to play. Three lead changes and a tie over the next 6 minutes would lead to the turning point of the contest. Up 49-47, Skidmore got a pair of 3 pointers from Ty Lamport that sandwiched a layup and free throw by Plattsburgh's Travis Cox to give the Ponies a 5 point edge at 55-50. The Cardinals needed a score but came up empty on their end and Skidmore's latest Lithuanian import, 6'3" freshman guard Tautvydas Kupstas buried another threeball to boost the lead to 58-50 with under 5 minutes to play. The Cardinals called timeout but turned the ball over when play resumed. A Nick DeAngelis steal  resulted in another chance but again Plattsburgh misfired and Skidmore scored inside to make the deficit a 10 point margin with 3:34 to go. The Cardinals got back in it with a 7-1 spurt, to make it 61-57 with 52 seconds left. Not wanting to foul the Cardinals hoped for a stop and almost got it when Skidmore missed a layup but the Ponies got the offensive rebound and Plattsbirgh fouled sending Lamport to the line where he missed the front end of a 1&1 with 19 seconds left. Plattsburgh rebounded and went coast to coast but the layup wouldn't go down and the Cards fouled once again. Skidmore made them both to go up by 6 points and Plattsburgh got a 3 pointer from DeAngelis with 9 seconds left to make it 63-60. The Cardinals took a timeout and got a turnover on the inbounds pass by Skidmore but immediately lost it right back and had to foul with just 5 ticks left. Skidmore missed both free throws but a lane violation was called on the 2nd free throw resulting in another chance from the line and this time Skidmore made it to give them a 2 possession, 64-60 lead. Plattsburgh missed at the buzzer to bring down the curtain on this one.

My original prediction of a Skidmore 68-63 victory was pretty close to the final score but I'm never happy when I'm right and my team loses. Plattsburgh had their chances in this game but once again 3 point shooting determined the winner. We didn't  shoot well from long distance, only 3x14 (21.4%). The Thoroughbreds went 8x21 from long distance (38.1%). The other shooting stats were fairly even. Plattsburgh was 25x55 from the field (45.5%) and 7x11 from the line (63.6%). Skidmore was 23x53 (43.4%) from the field and 10x17 (58.8%) from the stripe.

Both teams had 33 rebounds but the Cardinals had more giveaways than Skidmore 17 to 12. The Cardinals had 10 assisted baskets while Skidmore had 14.

Plattsburgh
Travis Cox led all scorers with 28 points on 12x19 shooting from the field. He added 6 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 assists. The 28 points represented a new career high for Travis as he continues to be an offensive force for the Cardinals. He is averaging 19.6 ppg and is shooting over 50% from the field and 79% from th line.

Nick DeAngelis had 14 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals, a block and 1 assist. He, like Cox, has scored in double figures in all 5 of the Cardinals' games and together they form a potent 1-2 punch. Nick's numbers will only get better as he missed the first month of practice and  is nearly at full strength.

Axel Rodriguez had 6 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

Cameron Ness had 6 rebounds, 3 points, 2 assists and 2 blocks. The big guy didn't get a lot of touches tonight when the Cardinals were on the offensive end, as Skidmore's size came into play. (6'10' center and 6'8" forward.)

Skidmore
Ryan Murunge had a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds to capture honors off the glass. He added 4 blocks, 2 assists and a steal.

Ty Lamport also had 14 points and 3 steals.

Tautvydas Kupstas had 13 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench.

Greg Skoric had 9 rebounds, 3 points, and 2 blocks.

Plattsburghs falls to 2-3 and will be off until the weekend of December 6th and 7th when they open conference play at Oneonta on Friday at 7:30 PM and New Paltz on Saturday at 4:00 PM.

The D3hoops Top 25 poll Week #1 has been released and the only teams from the East Region with any votes are Oswego State, the
University of Rochester and St. John Fisher.  Here's the link:  https://www.d3hoops.com/top25/men/2019-20/week1

Oswego State is 3-0 and is currently getting 60 points in the Others Receiving Votes category. They are in 28th place and despite going undefeated in their first 3 games they slipped from #26 in the preseason poll to #28 and lost 23 points. Two teams now ranked ahead of the Lakers at #26 and #27 are Elmhurst and Carthage. Both those teams are in the strong CCIW conference and are also undefeated. Both teams also defeated preseason #2 and last year's NCAA Champion, UW-Oshkosh, in the past week to give them a signature win. If Oswego keeps winning though, I think they will crack the Top 25 in a few weeks. Nazareth, who has already defeated 2 YAC teams, will try to take down the visiting Lakers tonight and spoil their Top 25 hopes.

Rochester is 5-0 and is in the 32nd spot with a total of 33 points. Rochester was only getting 5 points in the 41st spot in the previous poll. Rochester has an interesting game tonight against Hobart but seeing that it's in Rochester I expect them to win that game. Hard to get a W when you visit the Palestra.

St. John Fisher was ranked in the preseason poll grabbing the #25 spot with 93 points and ranked ahead of Oswego. They opened up with a loss to Union and got nipped last week by Rochester to fall way down in the Others Receiving Votes category with 7 points. These Cardinals wiil play Buffalo State later today, in the Queen City, The Bengals upset the favored Cardinals last year in Pittsford.
