Brockport State 81  Oneonta State 61

This game didn't have the drama that I thought it would have as Brockport used a 17-4 run and turned an early 5-0 deficit into a 17-9 lead with 12:53 left in the first period. The Red Dragons fought back and got as close as 30-27 but Port closed the half on an 8-1 burst, to lead at the break by double figures, 38-28.

Oneonta's Kevin Mackin opened the 2nd period with a pair of three pointers, one from distance and one the old fashioned way and suddenly we had a game as the score was just 38-34. Port scored 5 straight points and and then it was Oneonta's turn. It was 43-39 with 17 minutes to play and it looked like the game was heating up. Brockport took a timeout and whatever Coach Dunne told his troops must have sunk in because it quickly turned this game around in a big way. Brockport's Danny Ashley hit a jumper and Antonio Alvarez scored inside. Then Ashley drained a triple and Alvarez followed suit. Montgomery Stroman wanted in and he hit a three pointer, followed by another one from Alvarez. Stroman wasn't done though as he drained another one from long range and then followed that up with a drive inside. Suddenly it was a 21-0 run and this game was over with 11:02 to go. The score was 64-39. The Red Dragons had went 0-12 from the field, 0-2 from the line, and had a pair of turnovers, in the 4 minutes it took to go from 4 points behind to 25 points behind. Brockport's lead peaked at 26 points as they put this one in the win column early.

Brockport
Danny Ashley led the Golden Eagles with 15 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals.
Montgomery Stroman had 13 points and 7 rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench
Antonio Alvarez had 11 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 assist in 17 min off the bench
Tyree Grimsley had 9 points, 9 rebounds and a steal in 21 minutes off the bench.
Devante Hagins had 9 points, 9 rebounds, 1 assist and a block.

Oneonta
Kevin Mackin captured scoring honors for the game with 17 points.
Andres Rivera had 14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.
Joseph Bull had a game high 12 rebounds, 7 points, 4 steals and 1 assist.
Harrison Degan had 9 rebounds, 7 points, 4 assists, a block and a steal.
Dylan Trombley had 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 points and a block.

Brockport was better in all 3 shooting categories...had 51 rebounds to 41 for Oneonta and only had 12 turnovers to 15 for the Red Dragons.

Brockport improves to 10-3 overall and 5-1 in the SUNYAC. They are tied with Potsdam for first place but the Bears hold the tiebreaker over Brockport by virtue of their win over Port last Friday night. Brockport will now host New Paltz at 4:00 PM today.

Oneonta falls to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the SUNYAC. They are tied with Oswego for 3rd place at the present time and will travel to face Geneseo later this afternoon at 4:00 PM.

Jan. 18    All 10 teams in action todaywith tipoff at 4:00 PM in all 5 games

Oneonta State  at   Geneseo State        4:00 PM

The Red Dragons will be belching fire and brimstone after the loss they absorbed yesterday. They will want to erase that memory as quickly as possible and nothing does that better that winning the next game.

Geneseo is hoping they can spring the upset here and strengthen their chances of getting a playoff spot. Oneonta won both games last year and hold a 6-5 edge in this series in the last 11 games.

The point spread favors the Red Dragons by a 6 point margin. I think they win by more than that. Oneonta 78 Geneseo 60.

Plattsburgh State  at  Fredonia State       4:00 PM

Plattsburgh ended their 4 game losing streak and would like to start a streak in the other direction. They also need to win this game to keep their position for a playoff spot. Fredonia tasted victory in the YAC, earlier in the week and would like to end the week in the same fashion.

Plattsburgh is 13-1 against the Blue Devils over the past 7 years, but that 1 loss was what ultimately kept Plattsburgh out of the conference playoffs in the 2016-17 season. They don't need a repeat of that and yet could fall victim to the Blue Devils deliberate play.

The oddsmakers have listed Plattsburgh as 3 point favorites in this one. I see it as a close game also but believe the Cardinals can win by a few more. Plattsburgh 76 Fredonia 69.

New Paltz State  at  Brockport State   4:00 PM

The Hawks are still searching for a conference victory. They won't find one today. Brockport is too deep and too talented to lose to New Paltz and the oddsmakers have made them a 22 point favorite for a reason.

Of course, that same logic was used last season and the Hawks barely lost to Brockport 65-63, last January 11th in the Hawk Center. Brockport didn't have their big gun, Justin Summers, for that game but still scratched out the win. Three weeks later, with Justin Summers back in Port's lineup, New Paltz won, in Brockport, 69-67. So you just never know. Can history repeat itself?...probably not....but I know a certain head coach that will likely be reminding his team of the law of probabilities.

The Hawks could beat the spread and that would be a small victory in itself. I'm not sure they can do that either. Brockport wins this one 85-62

Potsdam State  at  Buffalo State        4:00 PM

Potsdam would love to ride back to the North Country in first place. It would be the most enjoyable ride home the team has had, in at least 15 years. The bus will be rockin should that happen, but first there is a little matter of Buffalo State.

The Bears are currently tied with Brockport at 5-1 in the YAC, and if the tournament were held today, the Bears would be the top seed. Today, Brockport gets to play the last place team while the Bears get to play a team that has had their number for the past 10 years. During that time the Bears are 1-19 against the Bengals. That's the bad news....the good news is the 1 victory was last year so the Bears have a recent win and now they have some new talent to try and start a streak of their own against Buff State.

Buffalo State is in danger of falling further behind for the final playoff spot if they lose today and Plattsburgh or Geneseo win. They need to stay in contact with the teams they have to beat out for that position. An 0-2 weekend could put a big hurt on their hopes.

The experts have the Bears listed as a 9 point favorite. I tend to agree with that. Potsdam has never played well in the Sports Arena and hasn't won there in ages, usually scoring between 50 to 65 points, but this Bears' team is ready to end that drought. Potsdam 85  Buffalo State 76.

Cortland State  at  Oswego State        4:00 PM

Cortland is looking to stay in touch with the leaders and a loss here could drop them 2 and a half games behind. Losing at home to Oneonta on Tuesday after leading for most of the game didn't sit well with the coaching staff. A win here, on the road, against their travel partner, will help soothe things over.

Oswego is 4-1 but really hasn't faced the meat of their YAC schedule yet, having beaten up on the bottom of the standings. The lone loss to Brockport on the road by a single point, tells the rest of the conference that they will be a major player once again. The Lakers have won 6 games in a row and have yet to lose at home all year. Of course that's partly because they've only played 2 games in Laker Hall, so far this season. Cortland and Oswego split their 2 games last year, but Cortland did win in Oswego. In fact, the Red Dragons have won in Oswego 4 times in the last 5 years and are 7-4 against the Lakers in that time.

The oddsmakers have listed Oswego as 4 point favorites in this game which should be a close one. I'm taking Oswego to win by an 82-77 final score.

Fredonia leads Plattsburgh 38-32 at the half.

The Blue Devils grab an early 11-4 lead but Plattsburgh comes back to go in front 23-19. Fredonia reverses the score once again and takes a 32-25 advantage. Cardinals close to 32-30 but Fredonia ends the half with a perfectly executed 3 pointer at the buzzer to go up by 6.

Fredonia led by 11 points and 2 assists from De'Quan Smith. Moussa Samassa adds 7 points and Chad Biersbach has 6.

Plattsburgh gets 12 points from Axel Rodriguex who hits 4 of 7 from long range. Jeremy Eisenman has 8 points and 3 rebounds.  Travis Cox with 6 points.

Whew. Momma said it would be days like this.  My beloved BENGALS gave one away Friday night ( congrats Plattsburgh) and Saturday spotted Potsdam a 29 pt lead in the first half.  Undoubtedly my guys are still finding thier way.

I must say that the Potsdam team I saw yesterday looked very good and athletic. The Isaiah Brown kid is the real deal too.  Size, quickness and athleticism.....Potsdam has it all.

New Paltz is next on the schedule.  Here's to hoping a week of good practice works out the kinks. SUNYAC season is a 3rd of the way done. 2/3rds left.

Go BENGALS

I agree with you, Bengal. That Potsdam squad is complete with a legit stud in Isaac Brown. They are the team to beat in the YAC. I love my Eagles chances but an injury to Summers has sent them into reorganization mode. They are still a very good squad with talent; but this is a severe blow if Summers is out for an extended period of time.

I see the YAC as a 5 team race. Potsdam, Bport, Oswego, Cortland and Oneonta have the upper hand in this conference regular season title chase. Of course I am pulling for my Eagles but any of these 5 teams could finish with the top seed. It will be fun to watch this season play out. Go Eagles!!!

I totally agree and any one of these teams can beat any of the others on a given night, Five well coached teams with some stars, and deep benches.  Cortland with three tough SUNYAC losses [Brockport, Oneonta & Oswego] starting to drop back in the standings with 3 losses 2-2&1/2 games back of the four one loss teams. Grunder vs. Sparks yesterday must have been a game to watch, both playing with 4 fouls at the end.

Potsdam State newcomer Isaiah Brown didn't waste any time grabbing some honors in the SUNYAC as he was named the Player of the Week for the period of January 13th through the 19th.

In just his 2nd week in a Bears' uniform the sophomore transfer continued his torrid pace, as he has now scored over 20 points per game in the 5 games he has played for Potsdam. He is also averaging 9 rebounds per game, 2.2 blocks per game and 2.2 steals per game.

Here is the write up from the SUNYAC website.

"CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has named Potsdam's Isaiah Brown (Queens, N.Y.) the PrestoSports Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week.

Brown helped the Bears to a 3-0 week and a share of first place in the conference standings. He averaged 22.7 points and 9.7 rebounds. He scored 21 points and grabbed five rebounds as Potsdam defeated Plattsburgh for the first time in eight years on Tuesday night. Brown then recorded his first career double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds as the Bears downed Fredonia. He capped his week with his second double-double on 25 points and 13 rebounds as Potsdam won at Buffalo State for the first time in 13 years."

Congratulations to Isaiah for his great week on the court. I have a feeling it won't be his last POTW award.

Just wondering--Where did Isaiah Brown play before Potsdam? He certainly was a tremendous pick up. He will be a dominate player in the YAC for seasons to come.

Jan. 21        Three games scheduled today

Penn State Shenango  at  Fredonia State    6:00 PM Re-Scheduled from Jan. 4

The Hawks are playing a USCAA school from a conference similar to our SUNYAC with all state schools. It's not as strong as the YAC but it depends on where you stand within your conference. If you're near the bottom of the SUNYAC playing a team near the top of the Penn State conference, there's a good chance you'll lose.

I know nothing about the Shenango Lions but their record is 4-10 and they're in the lower part of the standings.

Fredonia is playing some of their best basketball of the season and have won 2 of their last 3 games in the YAC. The point spread favors the Blue Devils by 7 points. I think they might win by a few more. Fredonia 75   Penn State Chenango 65

New Paltz State  at  Cortland State        7:30 PM

The Hawks are still looking to break into the win column in the SUNYAC and tonight's game will not be an easy spot to do that. New Paltz is just 3-9 against the Red Dragons over the past 6 years but strangely enough all 3 of those victories have come in Cortland so perhaps the Hawks are better off being the visitors tonight.

Cortland is coming off back to back conference losses and cannot afford to slip further behind the leaders if they have any hope of winning the top seed. The Hawks played Brockport even in the first half on Saturday but then got blown out in the 2nd half.

The oddsmakers have made Cortland a solid 21 point favorite in this game. The Hawks have lost 2 of their last 3 games by bigger margins than that. They also have only scored more than 59 points, once in their last 5 games. I see Cortland winning this one by an 85-62 final score and they could win by more than that.

Oneonta  at  Oswego State                7:30 PM   Featured Game of the Night

The Lakers would like a share of first place. With Potsdam and Brockport idle they can match the 6-1 record that those two have put up and create a 3 way tie for the lead.
These Red Dragons would like a share of first place and can also match that 6-1 record if they come away with the W. The loser falls a full game behind and also suffers in the tiebreaker department, which I'm fairly certain will come into play, down the line this year.

This conference, this year, looks more like a top 5 and a bottom 5 than I can recall in recent years. And any one of the top 5 can get hot and win the conference tournament. Seeding will be important and so will home court.

Oswego is coming into this game with a 7 game winning streak and actually got a mention in the Top 25 this week after falling completely out when they suffered their only 2 losses, back to back, in early December. If they can win a few more a ranking is again a possibility.

Oneonta after losing 3 of their first 4 games, got back to playing like we thought they would and ran off 7 wins in a row. They suffered a setback at Brockport last week, but got back in the win column the next day and is looking to start another streak.

Oswego leads this series with a 10-5 record over the last 6 years, but the Red Dragons have managed to win a game each of the last 4 seasons. Tonight visiting Oneonta is listed as a 7 point underdog and they will need to bring their A game if they want to spring the upset in Laker Hall. Oswego is playing well right now and I think they win this game but Oneonta makes it a closer game than 7 points. Oswego State 77 Oenonta 73.
