I have been on a 7 day cruise and got back in town last night. Super time and got the good news that my Eagles moved into 1st place in the SUNYAC by themselves. Nice week of basketball and I missed them all.(LOL) They have really stepped their play up since Justin Summers went down. Hope he returns soon but the Eagles just need to keep on going after it. Congrats on your big week!!! Don't sleep on anybody!!!

Two big games that mattered last weekend:

Plattsburgh State 68  Geneseo State 59

Good game between two teams fighting for a playoff berth. Plattsburgh behind Jeremy Eisenman's three point barrage shot out to an 18 point first half lead and led by 15 at the half. Geneseo hung tough and chipped away at the lead until they came within 2 points at 43-41 with 13:17 left to play. Plattsburgh used a 9-3 burst to open some daylight but the Knghts came back with a 9-2 run of their own to trail by a single point at 54-53 with 6:48 left. Travis Cox then scored 5 straight points, first on a pair from the line and after Geneseo missed a three on their end, Cox buried a three for the Cardinals. Agan the Knights missed from long range and Axel Rodriguez gave Plattsburgh an 8 point lead by sinking 2 free throws with 5:08 remaining. Geneseo never got closer than 5 points after that.

Jeremy Eisenmann came off the bench to match his career high of 18 points and also had 5 rebounds. He was 7x9 from the field and 4x6 from long distance.
Travis Cox just missed a double-double with 14 points and a game high 9 rebounds. He added 3 assists and a steal.
Nick DeAngelis had 10 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists.

Michael Gannon led the Knights with 15 points and 5 rebounds.
Elijah Wingfield had 12 points, 2 rebounds, an assist and a steal in 25 minutes off the bench.
Joseph Harclerode had 10 points, and a team high 7 rebounds.

Plattsburgh outshot the Knights in all three areas and had a slight edge in rebounds 32-30. The Knights had 13 turnovers while the Cardinals had 14.

The win gave Plattsburgh a leg up for the 6th and final playoff spot. Both teams lost on Saturday as did Fredonia so Plattsburgh has a 1 game lead over the Knights and Blue Devils with a 4-7 conference record to a 3-8 record for the other two.

This coming Friday's game between Plattsburgh and Fredonia will be huge for both teams.

Brockport 77 Potsdam 74

The battle for first place on Friday night didn't disappoint as these two teams went back and forth down to the last second. Brockprt led for the entire first half by as may as 9 points on several occasions and ended up with a 5 point 37-32 lead at the half.

Potsdam never lost touch with the Golden Eagles and continued to trail, until the Bears, down 43-37 with 16:25 to play, went on an 11-0 run over the next 3 minutes, to jump in front 48-43. Now it was Brockport who became the pursuer and it took them 4 minutes to reclaim the lead at 53-52 with 9:40 remaining. 6 lead changes and 6 ties would follow until the Bears Isaiah Brown went to the line with the score tied at 72-72 and 43 seconds left to play. He made both freebies to put Potsdam in front and on Brockport's possession Jahidi Wallace was fouled and went to the line for a pair. He missed the first, made the 2nd and now the Bears had possession and the lead with 31 ticks left. They just needed to get the ball inbounds and over the timeline. Brockport would have to foul and the Bears with some free throws could put this one in the win column. Brockport pressured the inbounds pass and Potsdam in danger of a 5 second call made a long pass downcout that was picked off by Monty Stroman. Stroman then made a layup 5 seconds later to put the Golden Eagles in the lead 75-74. Potsdam came down dribbled the clock down to 5 seconds and took a 3 point attempt that was no good. Port got the rebound, Potsdam fouled and Tyler Collins tacked on 2 free throws. With 3 seconds left Potsdam inbounded the ball on a long pass to their end and call a quick time out with 2 seconds left. They ran a play that gave Isaiah Brown a 3 point shot from the corner that came up empty, and Brockport had their position at the top of the SUNYAC standings once again. Great ballgame and good effort from both teams.

Brockport
Jahidi Wallace led all scorers with 22 points and he added 8 rebounds.
Tyler Collins had 16 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.
Danny Ashley had 11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.
Monty Stroman had 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and a block.

Potsdam
Isaiah Brown led the Bears with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and a steal.
Danny Delsol-Lowry had 14 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals.
Tyrese Baptiste had a double-double with 13 points and a game high 17 rebounds. He added 4 blocks and a steal.
Jayquan Thomas had 13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.
Aaron Armstrong had 9 points, 8 rebounds and a block.

Shooting stats were fairly even with Port a little better from the field and Potsdam with an edge from the line. Rebounding was also tight with 50 for the Bears and 48 for Port. The Golden Eagles won the turnover battle with just 10 giveaways to 17 for Potsdam. The last of the Bears' turnovers was the one they'd like to have back.

Brockport at 10-1 has a half game lead over Oneonta and will meet up with the Red Dragons on Friday evening, most likely with first place on the line. The Golden Eagles will take on Fredonia first today at 4 PM in a game they are heavily favored.

The Bears travel to Plattsburgh for a game on Tuesday night.

Feb. 4      Four games on the schedule for tonight.

Brockport State  at Fredonia State        7:30 PM

The Golden Eagles are back on top and need to be careful of a letdown here. Fredonia has surprised teams in the past. This is Fredonia's first meeting with Brockport this year and if last year is any indication the Blue Devils are in trouble as Brockport won by large margins both times. Port has won the last 7 times they've played but the Blue Devils did have a big upset back in 2015 at home. They are hoping for a repeat of that performance.

The experts have Brockport listed as a 17 point favorite. I think they win by a few more. Brockport 87 Fredonia 66.

Geneseo State  at  Buffalo State        7:30 PM

The Bengals and Knights are also meeting for the first time this season. Both have been struggling and putting one in the win column tonight will be a welcome occasion. Buffalo State is on a 13 game losing streak which is their longest such streak in at least 13 years, but probably even longer than that. Geneseo has dropped their last 2 and 4 of their last 5 but they need a win to keep Plattsburgh in sight.

The oddsmakers have made Geneseo a slight 2 point road favorite to win and I also think it will be a close game. The Knights have more to play for at this point so I'm taking them. Geneseo 67 Buffalo State 64.

Potsdam State  at  Plattsburgh State   7:30 PM

The Bears haven't swept the Cardinals is a season series in a long time. The 2008-09 season, over a decade ago, was the last time that it happened. This might be the year they do it again.

The Bears are just a game out of first place with a 9-2 SUNYAC record and but for an errant pass, could just as easily be in first place all by themselves. They can still win the top seed in the conference but now they will need some help to do so.

Plattsburgh has the 6th and final seed for now, but keeping it will be a challenge as the teams head into the home stretch. Both teams went 1-1 last weekend beating Geneseo and losing to Brockport. Plattsburgh lost their first game to Potsdam by 19 points and was down by 15 at the half. They will need to do a better job of protecting the paint, as the Bears scored inside early and often, to jump out to an early lead. Then they started draining 3 pointers as they had 7 in the first half.

The oddsmakers have listed the Bears as 12 point favorites. I hope the Cardinals can cover the point spread but I don't think they win this one. Potsdam 88 Plattsburgh 74. Sure hope I'm wrong.

New Paltz State  at  Oswego State        7:30 PM

The Lakers are sitting in 4th place all alone but haven't conceded anything to the teams in front of them, just yet. They still get to play those three teams again and hope to even the score. Tonight they get the Hawks who are struggling in the conference with a 1-9 record. The point spread favors Oswego by 20 points and it's hard to see the Lakers dropping this game. They won the first time in the Hawk Center by 25 points. I see them winning at home by a similar margin.  Oswego 86  New Paltz 63.

Tuesday's final scores:

New Paltz State 55   Oswego State 80

Potsdam State 89    Plattsburgh State 82

Potsdam State 89    Plattsburgh State 82

Good game at Memorial Hall tonight between the Bears and the Cardinals. The Cardinals scored first but that would be the last time they had the lead. Potsdam quickly shot out to an 11-4 lead and lengthened it to 18-9 with 14:14 left in the half. Cards would come back and close to 20-17 but Potsdam went back up by 10 at 31-21. The Bears lead would grow to a game high 14 points at 37-23 with 4:38 remaining in the period. Plattsburgh was able to get it back to single digits at 44-36 as Adam Jaquish scored inside with a second left in the half.

Potsdam continued to lead by a comfortable margin that hovered between 7 and 13 points for the first 10 minutes of the 2nd period. Plattsburgh, down by 11 at 62-51, used a 10-2 run to cut the margin to 3 points at 64-61 with 9:55 to go. That was as close as they would get. The Bears used an 11-3 run to once again lead by 11 points at 75-64 with 5:31 left. Travis Cox hit a 3 pointer for the Cardinals to get within 5 points but Isaiah Brown answered for Potsdam and the Bears hit their free throws down the stretch to close the game out.

Potsdam
Isaiah Brown had a game high 37 points and 9 rebounds.
Jayquan Thomas had 15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal and a block.
Tyrese Baptiste had a double-double of 14 points and a game high 12 rebounds. He added 2 steals and 2 blocks.
Ahamadou Sillah had 11 points and 6 rebounds.
Danny Delsol-Lowry had 5 assists, 4 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 points.
Aaron Armstrong  had 7 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and a block.

Plattsburgh
Travis Cox had 28 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, a steal and a block.
Axel Rodriguez had 19 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals.
Adam Jaquish had 10 points in 14 minutes off the bench.
Matt Bernhard had 7 points in 18 minutes off the bench.

The teams shooting percentages were fairly even, but Potsdam had a big advantage on the boards, 45-34. Turnovers were also about the same with 14 for the Bears and 13 for Plattsburgh.

Potsdam improves to 15-4 overall and 10-2 in the SUNYAC. They are in 3rd place in the standings They will host Buffalo State on Friday night at 7:30 PM.

Plattsburgh drops to 7-12 overall and 4-8 in the SUNYAC. They are now tied with Geneseo for 6th place. They will host Fredonia on Friday at 7:30 PM

I watched the Bport-Fredonia matchup last night. It was a single digit lead by the Eagles for most of the first half with T. Collins knocking down a 3ptr at the buzzer to up the lead to 11 points. The second half the Eagles extended the lead and emptied the bench in the final 3 minutes, going beyond their usual 10 rotation players. Another great team effort for the Eagles. Congrats !!!!!

Feb. 7        Four games on tap for tonight, if the snowstorm doesn't cancel any

Geneseo State  at  New Paltz State        7:30 PM

The Knights are hoping to keep pace with Plattsburgh and stay ahead of Fredonia for the final playoff spot. They won their last game at Buffalo State on Tuesday night and that gives them 3 road wins, having also won at Plattsburgh and Fredonia.

The Hawks will have to string together some wins if they have any hope of making the playoffs. A loss here and tomorrow against league leader Brockport, could virtually eliminate them from playoff contention.

The teams have split their season series in 3 of the last 5 years, including the last 2 seasons, but the Knights hold a 7-3 edge over that time span. The experts have made the Knights a slim 1 point favorite in this one. I'm taking Geneseo to win by a 68-63 final score.

Fredonia State  at  Plattsburgh State        7:30 PM

This game has major implications on the final playoff spot since Fredonia already has a win over the Cardinals. A win tonight would give the Blue Devils a leg up as they would own the tiebreaker over Plattsburgh.

Whoever wins this game could find themselves all alone in 6th place. Or there could be a 3-way tie in which case Fredonia would currently hold the tiebreaker over the other 2 teams.

Plattsburgh is coming off a tough loss to Potsdam while the Blue Devils got blitzed by Brockport. The Blue Devils have lost 3 in a row and 8 of their last 9 games. They need a win here if they want to stay in the playoff race. Plattsburgh is 3-4 in their last 7 games and are looking to go 2-0 this weekend to become the frontrunner for the 6th seed.

The last time Fredonia swept the season series against Plattsburgh was 8 years ago in 2011-12 and Plattsburgh holds a big edge in the won-lost column since then.

The oddsmakers have listed Plattsburgh as the favorites in this game by a 7 point margin. That may be a few too many. I see the Cardinals taking this game by a 72-67 final score.

Brockport State  at  Oneonta State      7:30 PM Featured Game of the Night

The big game of the night is for sole possession of first place in the SUNYAC. The big question is... will Oneonta have one of their top weapons...Joe Bull. He left the last game the Red Dragons played, after only 2 minutes of playing time and did not return. I've had a number of people ask me if he's injured but I haven't heard anything so I won't know until gametime what his status is.

Brockport won the first meeting against Oneonta by a 20 point margin. That was the game that Brockport lost Justin Summers. They held the Red Dragons to 61 points in that game and will look to do more of the same tonight. Port is coming off a win over Fredonia on Tuesday and has now won 9 in a row, all by 15 to 29 points, except for the barnburner against Potsdam last Friday. The Golden Eagles are getting some votes in the  D3hoops Top 25 poll and a win tonight will boost them a little higher. Losing a top scorer like Summers would put most teams' playoff aspirations on hold, but the Eagles have barely missed a beat and with their depth have been playing like the well oiled machine that they are.

Oneonta has also been playing well and after an inexplicable 1-3 start to the season, have ripped off 12 wins in the last 13 games, including their last 5 in a row. The only blemish is that loss to Brockport.

Brockport holds a 7-4 edge in the last 5 seasons and has won the last 3 games in this series. The oddsmakers have Brockport favored by just 2 points. I don't know if Oneonta will be shorthanded or not but I would have picked the Golden Eagles anyway. Brockport wins this one 86-81.

Buffalo State  at  Potsdam State                7:30 PM

The Bears were in my hometown on Tuesday night and I was impressed. I think they will be the playoff team to watch out for. They have a starting 5 that is perhaps the best in the league. They have went toe to toe with Brockport (a win and a loss) and certainly held their own and they only lost in Oneonta on a last second shot without their two leading scorers. When Oneonta goes to Potsdam on February 21st the Red Dragons could be in for a very rough time. Potsdam is 15-4. One of those 4 losses is to Division I University of Albany. The other 3 losses were by a total of 8 points and all came down to the last few seconds. With a bit of luck the Bears could be undefeated in D3 competition and be 18-1. That would have put them in D3hoops Top 10, I believe.

Buffalo State traveled to the North Country on Thursday as they usually do for this, the longest of their weekend trips. Good thing because we're supposed to get a foot to a foot and a half of snow today. I may be watching the Cardinals play Fredonia from my living room instead of courtside.

The Bengals will have to play their best game of the year tonight and it still may not be good enough. Their long losing streak has reached 11 games and Potsdam is favored in this game by 23 points. They won the first meeting by 24 points in Buffalo. I think tonight's score will be... Potsdam 102 Buffalo State 73.

Lemme try this again:

Fredonia State 35 Plattsburgh State 32 at halftime.

Live stats just came on line with first half results.

Fredonia jumped out to an early 11-4 lead and the Cardinals spent the entire period playing catch up. Fredonia's biggest lead was 22-14.  They almost tied the game several times but the Blue Devils always had an answer to any Plattsburgh comebacks.

De'Quan Smith was high for Fredonia with 10 points.
Chad Biersbach had 9 points and 6 rebounds.

Travis Cox had 7 points and 3 rebounds.
Nick DeAngelis had 7 points and 4 rebounds.
Erik Salo had 6 points and 6 rebounds.
