Nice to see Brockport at the top of the East Region rankings. Thought they would be #1 but was afraid RPI, despite the loss to Ithaca the other day, (thanks to Jake Mitchell's game winning basket) might still end up on top. Brockport's SOS is much better than RPI's and should be the difference maker. 4 of the 8 teams are from the SUNYAC so we have an outside chance for another team to move into the 2 or 3 spot. Need the Golden Eagles to stay where they are for a while.

Brockport is going to have a killer vRRO, too - they're pretty secure without too many losses.

Yes, currently 5-2 vRRO and they could end up 6-2 if things break right.

Feb. 14     Four games scheduled for tonight

Plattsburgh State  at  Oswego State   7:30 PM

The Cardinals are now a half game back of Geneseo for the 6th seed. The Knights are idle tonight but the Cardinals will be hard pressed to get a win in Oswego. The Lakers, coming off a loss to Cortland, will not want to lose at home. Oswego took the first game in this season series by a 63-44 margin in Plattsburgh. The experts have made Oswego a 16 point favorite in this one. I'll be happy if the Cards cover that spread but I'm not sure they will be able to. Oswego 77 Plattsburgh 63. Hope I'm wrong though.

Oneonta State  at  Buffalo State        7:30 PM

I thought the Bengals might be turning things around after a decent weekend in the North Country, but their loss to Geneseo, on Tuesday, was not pretty. They were down by double digits less than 5 minutes after the opening tip and it just got worse from there.

They played Oneonta tough, in Oneonta, the first time around, as they came from 18 points down, at 59-41, with 14 minutes to go, to tie the game at 70-70 with 3:39 to play. The Red Dragons ended the game on a 6-0 run to win 76-70.

Oneonta is just a half game behind Potsdam and still hoping to get the top seed in the playoffs. The double loss to Brockport will make that unlikely as Oneonta would need to win their final 5 games and hope Brockport loses 2 of their final 3 games. Still it's possible and these Red Dragons will be working hard to try and make that happen.

The oddsmakers have made Oneonta an 11 point favorite in this one. I think they win by a few more.
Oneonta 84 Buffalo State 71.

Potsdam State  at  Cortland State        7:30 PM      Featured Game of the Night

Potsdam will try to keep in contact with Brockport and can't afford a loss here. Brockport still holds the tiebreaker over Potsdam at the present time and I'm not sure that Potsdam can turn that around. The Bears still want the first round bye and control their destiny to get that prize.

Cortland is in the 5th spot and would probably need to win out and get some help, to move up, unless Oswego has a complete meltdown. These Red Dragons, coming off a loss to their cousins at Oneonta, would like a reversal of the first game these two played back on January 25th. Potsdam won that one by 10 points, 83-73.

The experts have made Cortland a home favorite here by a slim 3 point margin. And 3 point shooting might determine the winner. Nobody takes more shots from downtown, in the conference, than Cortland. I'm going with my alma mater in this game and will take Potsdam to win a close one.  Potsdam 86 Cortland 82.

New Paltz State  at  Fredonia State        7:30 PM

These teams are trying to avoid the basement and also to end the season on a positive note. Both teams have had their moments and were close to springing upsets. Fredonia with early wins over Geneseo and Plattsburgh put themselves into the playoff picture. Their recent slump, however, has left them with just a faint hope of finishing in the 6th spot. They would need to win out and hope that several teams above them lose the rest of their games. New Paltz is in the same situation. One of them will be eliminated tonight, for certain.

The point spread has the home team Blue Devils favored by 4 to win this one. I think that Fredonia also wins this game by a few more. Fredonia 80 New Paltz 73.

Oneonta leads Buffalo State 43-41 at halftime.

Red Dragons playing catch up for most of the first half as they trailed by 10 points on several occasions. Down 32-22 with 7 minutes to play, they wouldn't let the Bengals get away from them and finally came all the way back to take the lead at 40-39 with 1:40 left.

Kevin Mackin carrying the load as he has 22 points and 4 steals for the Red Dragons at the break. Andres Rivera with 7 points and 4 rebounds.

Sheldon Adams doing the same for the Bengals as he has 20 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals at the half. No one else has more than 4 points.

Oswego 39 Plattsburgh 34 at halftime.

The Lakers break free of a 31-31 tie, with 2:40 left, on a 3 pointer by Brandan Gartland and another one by Colby Moultrie on their next possession. Joe Sullivan added a pair of free throws for Oswego and the Cardinals countered with a 3 ball from Matt Bernhard but trail by 5.

Oswego got 15 points and 4 rebounds from Brandan Gartland. Joe Sullivan added 9 points and 5 rebounds.

Matt Bernhard had 12 points for Plattsburgh off the bench and was 3 x3 from long distance. He added 2 rebounds and an assist. Travis Cox added 7 points.

Cardinals only dressed 9 players and may have lost Jeremy Eisenmann who was injured just before halftime. Several Cardinals in foul trouble. Hope they can finish the game with 5 players.

Oswego 75  Plattsburgh 69

Proud of the way Plattsburgh competed at Oswego tonight. The Cardinals were shorthanded before the game even started as they were only able to dress 9 players. Then they lost a player to injury midway through the first half. Foul trouble also hampered the efforts of 2 Cardinal starters for much of the game. They were still able to hang with the Lakers and on several occasions, when it looked like Oswego was finally going to put them away, someone stepped up and kept the pressure on. This was a 2 point game with under 6 minutes to play, at 61-59, when the Lakers Colby Moultrie hit back to back triples to open up an 8 point advantage. The closest Plattsburgh could get after that was 4 points and the Lakers went  4x5 from the line to claim the win.

Oswego
Oswego was led by Brandan Gartland with a game high 22 points. He added 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals.
Joe Sullivan had 21 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and a block.
Colby Moultrie had 14 points in 11 minutes off the bench.
Jamal Achille had 6 points, 9 rebounds and 1 assist in 29 minutes off the bench.
Liam Sanborn had 5 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and a block.

Plattsburgh
Junior Matt Bernhard had a career high 17 points to lead the Cardinals. He added 5 rebounds and 1 assist in 33 minutes off the bench, which was also the longest amount of court time he had ever logged in a Cardinal game. He nailed 4 straight 3 pointers to help keep Plattsburgh close at different points in the contest.
Travis Cox had 16 points, 6 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 assists and a steal.
Nick DeAngelis had a double-double of 10 points and a game high 12 rebounds. He added 5 assists, 2 steals and a block.
Cameron Ness had 8 points, 8 rebounds, a steal and a block.
Erik Salo had 9 points and 4 rebounds.

The Lakers imporved to 16-5 overall and 10-4 in the SUNYAC. They continue to hold on to 4th place by 2 games over Cortland who defeated 2nd place Potsdam tonight. The Lakers will face Potsdam in Laker Hall Saturday at 4:00 PM.

Plattsburgh falls to 8-14 overall and 5-10 in the YAC. They are still in 7th place, now a game back of Geneseo for the final playoff spot. They will travel to Cortland for a game on Saturday afternoon at 4 PM

Feb. 15      Everyone in action this afternoon at 4:00 PM.  4 games with playoff implications.

Geneseo State  at  Brockport State        4:00 PM

The Knights would love to pull off the upset here and hold the tiebreaker over Plattsburgh. Don't think that will happen as the Golden Eagles are too deep and talented. The oddsmakers have them listed as 21 point favorites. They won the first go around by 15. They should win this one by an 85- 61 final score.

Plattsburgh State  at  Cortland State   4:00 PM

They say that revenge is a dish best served cold. Well it was very cold Friday and Cortland got their revenge. Today they will be looking for more revenge on top of that serving they got yesterday against Potsdam. The Red Dragons went 0-2 on their visit to the North Country 3 weeks ago. They won't settle for anything less than 2-0 against those teams when they visit Cortland. The Red Dragons are listed as a 16 point favorite over the Cardinals. I hope the Cardinals can cover the point spread. They are banged up and will struggle to stay with the Red Dragons. Cortland 88 Plattsburgh 74, but I sure hope I'm wrong on this one.

Oneonta State  at  Fredonia State        4:00 PM

Both teams won on Friday and eliminated 2 teams from the playoff race. Now Fredonia needs to win today or they will be eliminated. The Blue Devils have 4 wins and there are 2 teams above them, Plattsburgh and Geneseo. Should they all finish with 6 wins....Fredonia needs to win this game and next Saturday against Buffalo State to do so.....then Fredonia will own the tiebreaker by virtue of a win over Oneonta and get the final playoff spot.

This is the big game for the Blue Devils so they will give it their best shot. The oddsmakers have listed Oneonta as a 12 point favorite. I'm surprised the point spread is so low, as Oneonta won the first meeting 81-40. Oneonta wins this one by a large margin as well.  Oneonta 87 Fredonia 62.

Potsdam State  at  Oswego State        4:00 PM             Featured Game of the Day

Both teams need this game to keep alive their hopes of a first round bye. The schedule is a little more favorable to Potsdam at this point, since Oswego has to play the 3 teams directly ahead of them, among their final 4 games. Potsdam has 3 games remaining and only Oneonta is ahead of them. They also end the season with the last place team.

The Bears dropped a tough one to Cortland last night. They were down by as many as 19 points and came back to trail 85-83 with just over 2 minutes remaining. They had their chances down the stretch but couldn't quite pull off the comeback. Oswego also had a tough game against Plattsburgh but held off the Cardinals to finish on top.

The experts have the Lakers favored by 3 points here. The Bears 3 conference losses have all been on the road....by 2 points, 3 points, and 5 points. At some point they need to get lucky. Potsdam 80 Oswego 76.

New Paltz State  at  Buffalo State        4:00 PM

Both of these teams have been eliminated from the playoffs and are playing for pride. The Hawks won the first meeting at home. I think it's the Bengals' turn to do the same thing. The point spread favors Buffalo State by 5 points. I think they win by a few more. Buffalo State 87 New Paltz 78.
