Coast Guard at #18 Brockport State  6:30 PM

I'm hoping the Golden Eagles can stretch their winning streak to 6 more games but will be happy if they can get 3 or 4 more games. The oddsmakers have Brockport winning this game by a 10 point margin. I hope they are correct. I think Brockport wins it as well but not sure if they do so by by 10 points.

Coast Guard played some tough teams down the stretch and played very well. They were 2-6 against WPI, Babson and Springfield, 2 teams that were all ranked in the D3hoops Top 25 for most of the year. They beat Springfield and WPI to get to the Dance and several of the 6 losses to those 3 teams were in overtime or by single digits. Their 14-13 record is misleading because they are a much better team than that record would indicate.

Brockport needs to come out with their full court pressure and get these guys to turn the ball over. The Bears will have a slight height advantage so Brockport needs to use their quickness and athleticism to limit their possessions and get an early lead. They don't want to be playing catch up against these guys. The Bears are playing on house money, because they weren't supposed to be here. They have nothing to lose and will probably play like that. They did manage a big comeback in their last game as they were down by 24 points at halftime and came back to win in overtime to win the conference tournament. So there's no quit in them either.

I'm taking the Golden Eagles to win this game and I expect it to be a high scoring affair. Brockport 88 Coast Guard 81.

Brockport 47 Coast Guard 43 at the half.

The Golden Eagles get a half court bomb from Tyler Collins with less than a second to go in the period to grab the 4 point halftime lead. Actually think it was longer than halfcourt and might have been with a tenth of a second on the clock as he threw it up. It happened after Collins received an inbounds pass and the camera wasn't even on him as he let it fly, so no one watching the video stream even saw the shot. I didn't think he could catch and shoot it before time expired but he did manage to do it and do it quite well. Hopefully the camera got the shot and it shows up on ESPN's Sport Center's Top Ten plays because it certainly deserves to be there.

Brockport held the early lead of 13-9 but the Coast Guard Bears caught them and went ahead 17-15 with 14:12 left to play. Brockport trailed for most of the next 10 minutes. They tied the score on several occasions but couldn't get the lead back until Jahidi Wallace got a 3 point play with 3:54 left in the half. Tyler Collins got a steal and Justin Summers finished with a dunk to put the Golden Eagles up 39-36. Still up 44-43 with time winding down and the Bears with possession, Brockport managed to keep them off the board with their final shot and set the stage for Collins' heroics.

Brockport got balanced scoring as Jahidi Wallace led the team with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Tyler Collins had 9 points, 6 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Justins Summers and Antonio Alvarez both had 7 points while Devante Hagins had 6 points and 6 rebounds.

Coast Guard got 11 points and 4 rebounds from Justin Kane.   Garrett Drummond had 9 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Tyler Perez and  Packy Witkowski had 7 points each.

What a great game at Brockport tonight. Props to CG they would not go away. Standing room only at Brockport tonight with over 2000 people. Looking at a bunch of box scores from Fri on no other game was even close to that. Both teams were getting up and down the court and getting after it. Crowd will be just as big tonight if not bigger!! Let's go Port !!!

Brockport 92 Coast Guard 86

The final score was fairly close to the 88-81 Brockport win that I predicted.

First half stats:
Brockport got balanced scoring as Jahidi Wallace led the team with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Tyler Collins had 9 points, 6 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Justins Summers and Antonio Alvarez both had 7 points while Devante Hagins had 6 points and 6 rebounds.

Coast Guard got 11 points and 4 rebounds from Justin Kane.   Garrett Drummond had 9 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Tyler Perez and  Packy Witkowski had 7 points each.

The Golden Eagles opened up the second half with a 9-4  burst and shot out to a 9 point lead at 56-47 just under 4 minutes into the period. However, Brockport couldn't pull away as the Bears went on a 13-2 run of their own to take the lead at 60-58 with 12:48 left to play. Brockport got a layup from Tyree Grimsley, a three from Tyler Sullivan and another layup from Grimsley to go back in front 65-60. Still down by 5 points, at 71-66, the Bears got a triple from Packy Witkowski to get within 2 points, but that was the last time Coast Guard was that close. Monty Stroman responded with a three ball of his own and when the Bears missed on their end Stroman scored again inside. Once more the Bears came up empty and Jahidi Wallace sunk 2 free throws to open up a 78-69 lead with 5 minutes to go. The Bears never got closer than 2 possessions after that. Brockport extended the lead to 10 points and went 4 of 6 from the line to close out the game.

Shooting stats were fairly close as Brockport was 34x74 (45.9%) from the field and the Bears were 30x70 (42.9%). Coast Guard had a significant edge from long range as they were 11x31 (35.5%) to 6x19 (31.65) for the winners. Brockport was 18x25 (72.0%) from the line to 15x20 (75.0%) for the Bears.

Brockport won the rebounding battle 47-39 and scored 54 points in the paint to just 36 for Coast Guard. The Golden Eagles had 14 turnovers to 16 for the Bears. Brockport got 26 assists to 17 for Coast Guard.

Danny Ashley had 8 points, 4 assists and 2 rebounds.

#18 Brockport extends their unbeaten streak to 18 straight games, which is the 2nd longest current unbeaten streak in Division III. Their overall record stands at 25-3. Brockport has not lost at home all year and are 14-0 in Vlogianitis Gymnasium. They will look to continue that streak later today when they take on the Middlebury College Panthers at 4:00 PM.

Sadly, Tyler Collins' big 3 point bomb from half court at the buzzer to end the first half wasn't on ESPN Sports Center last night. They had a number of basketball plays, none of which had the wow factor of Tyler's amazing shot. Maybe it wasn't on because no one sent it to them. They missed the boat on that one.

Middlebury College at Brockport State       6:30 PM

This one should be another great basketball game between two well coached teams that always finish at or near the top of their conference standings.

Middlebury received an at large bid to the Dance and last night defeated Westfield State by a 78-69 final score to reach the round of 32. They improved their overall record to 21-5. One of their best players should feel right at home in the Brockport gym as he spent his first 2 years of college ball playing a short distance away at Geneseo State. Tommy Eastman sat out last year and transferred to Middlebury this year as a junior. He received Second Team All Conference consideration as a sophomore for Geneseo and has played in the Brockport gym on several occasions. His last appearance here with Geneseo resulted in a double-double of 23 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Last night as a Middlebury Panther he came close to repeating that effort as he torched Westfield State for 19 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks. Eastman apparently feels quite comfortable in the Brockport gym. Since being inserted in the Panthers starting lineup in early January Eastman has been their leading scorer and 2nd leading rebounder.

Middlebury has defeated 6 different teams that are in the NCAA tournament, more than any one in the country. They will be a big obstacle for the Golden Eagles to get by. The oddsmakers have made Brockport a  slim 4 point favorite in this one. I think it will also be a tight game with Brockport getting a little separation with a few minutes left. I think the final score will be Brockport 85 Middlebury 79.

Caz Bombers

props to Brockport...the Golden Eagles are having one hell of a season.

Brockport 84 Middlebury 81   Final score

Great game from start to finish. Congratulations to the Golden Eagles for making the Sweet 16.

Since the sectionals this year are a bit unusal, because the Elite Eight round and the national semifinals will be played at Fort Wayne, Indiana, I think it means that 8 schools will host a single game next weekend instead of 4 sites hosting a pair of games. That gives Brockport an excellent chance to host their next game which will be against Tufts. I may be wrong about 8 teams hosting a single game, though, because I don't think they have ever done it quite like this before. They may still send 4 teams to 4 different sites.

Yes I did just now. Eight games at eight different sites and Brockport gets to host one of them. A good choice since their gym will be packed with over 2000 fans.

What a great weekend of basketball at the Port. Now you get one more home game, and a chance to finish undefeated at home with a trip to Elite Eight in Fort Wayne!!!! That Tufts squad looks like a big hurdle but definitely beatable. They really fire the 3 ball from looking at their stats. Lots of bigs according to the roster. Congrats, Eagles on earning your Sweet Sixteen game. I am sure Coach Dunne and the guys will have them ready to "March On." GO B-Port!!!!!!

It should help Brockport preparing for Tufts will be like preparing for Middlebury in many ways. On the other hand I don't think Tufts has played many if any teams with Brockports athleticism. Middlebury did beat Tufts by double digits this year at Middlebury. Brockport has been destroying teams on the boards and should continue on Sat. Tufts will launch a lot of 3 balls but I love Brockports chances. I have Brockport opening at a 4.5 PT favorite. Congrats Brockport on what has already been a great ride. Love watching this team!!
