Bears nipped the New Paltz Hawks 75-72 in a classic back and forth affair last night in Potsdam that included 14 lead changes.

Potsdam center Tyrese Baptiste returned to the lineup in style with a heroic 22 point 21 rebound effort adding a pair of assists and blocks.

Freshman Parker Kelly added 14 points including a pair of treys, and a clutch jump shot with 51 seconds left to put the Bears into the lead for the last time. Soph transfer Colton Huestis added 13 points and 6 boards.

Little used PG Isaac Oduro came off the bench after starting Bear's PG MeSean Johnson fouled out early and had 8 points and 2 assists in 11 minutes of action.

New Paltz Soph Rylan Blondo had a double double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, and looks to be a breakout player in the SUNYAC.

Transfer Solomon Neuhaus hit 3 long range treys as part of a 15 point outing, and PG Sean St. Lucia added 11 points and 4 assists despite being in foul trouble.

Hawks post tandem of Isaiah Bien-Aise and Tyriek Frazier combined for 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Bears host Oneonta Red Dragons today at 4, and Hawks cross the North Country to take on the Plattsburgh Cards.

Pretty bad loss for Potsdam today.  Up 9 with a minute left and Oneonta hits 3 threes in a row to force overtime in which they prevailed.

Oswego utterly dismantled Brockport.  Brockport is down a bit compared to years past but is still a good squad.  Oswego had no trouble.   The Lakers looking like one of the premier East (now region III I guess) programs like usual.

Biggest surprise has to be Plattsburgh.  They have been non-competitive in most games they've played.

Momma said there would be days like  this.  After getting down 16 points at halftime, versus good Oswego squad, and then scoring point for point versus them in second (half 38 - 38).  I felt that today's game vs Geneseo was the game to get us back on track.  We were soooo close.

With less than 2 seconds left we were up by 2 but as fate would have it, the Knights tie the game at buzzer.  On to overtime, which was nip and tuck. Down by 1  with less than 9 seconds left, Sheldon Adams misses on a jumper but Marquell gets the rebound puts it back up and gets fouled, with .5 seconds left. Needing 1 to tie and 2 to win, we came up empty at the foul line. To be honest, as sad as I was for losing, my heart went out to Marquel. He is easily 1 of the 2 nicest and compassionate players on the team.  Needless to say ....we lost!

We have 2 days to get ready for Div 2 Dyouville  , then Brockport after that. With 7 freshman and 4 sophomores, we've got some good building blocks to work with. With Phil Weeks , who's averaging 16.8 boards a game ( in 6 games) and Sheldon Adams who's averaging 25 points a game, we have a couple of cornerstones to build on. Hopefully Aaron Davis will continue his strong play at the point. I'm also encouraged by how some of the newcomers are coming along . They deserved to win this one but no one is giving out victories because a team " deserves" to win

Most of you know I'm a diehard Bengals fan, and this year is not any different

GO BENGALS

Oswego did to Brockport what the Eagles did to Cortland the night before. Oswego and Bport are very similar in style of play, but my Eagles were out executed, outhustled and were out classed today. They are a solid squad but still need some work. Oswego is the team to beat in SUNY's right now! It is going to be a very competitive and interesting SUNYAC season.

Yes, that was a tough one, up nine with a minute to play.

Actually the three triples were in 23 seconds of clock time. First was at :59 left, then Dragons fouled at :48 and Bears missed both FT's, Dragons got the rebound, next three was at :43.  Dragons then forced a 5 second call on the inbounds, and 7 seconds later hit the third three at :36.

Should be noted that the Bears were without Brandon Segar [16 pts/ 11 rebs/gm] who was injured in the first half of the NP game, and also lost his replacement in the lineup Jeff Williamson in the first half of the Oneonta game due to injury.

Frankie Williams put on a clinic for the Dragons with 31 points.

So this is what a win feels like! Today's  84-75 victory over( Div 2) Dyouville took a long time in coming.  Again Sheldon Adams comes through with 31 points. Newcomer Daron Hughey chipped in with a season best 26 points ( on 11 of 14) shooting. Missing Phil Weeks, who has been on a rebounding tear, was cause for some some concern , but my Bengals toughed it up..

Brockport is 4 days away. A win vs them would be just what the dr. order!

Go BENGALS

The Eagles traveled to Buff St. last night and came away with a 99-73 victory against the Bengals. Buff played a solid 1st half and only trailed by 8. The Eagles came out smoking in the 2nd half and finished strong for the win. The Bengals had no answer for Wallace as he recorded a double-double with 24 pts and 14 rebounds. Now on to Daytona for the Eagles on Dec 20-21. Looking forward to seeing them live against some good competition. Go Eagles!!!

Did not see until just now that Potsdam lost to the 396th ranked team in Massey yesterday   :o :o

Box score makes it seem like the Bears just ran into some really bad 3 point shooting luck.

Oneonta lost to Occidental 62-68 on the opening night of their two game west coast swing.  Game was tied at 57 with 2:51 left then Occidental went on a 7-0 run and held on for the W.  Dragon regular Dylan Trombley did not appear in the box, and Joseph Bull is still MIA for the Dragons. Oneonta at #40 Chapman at 5PM today.

Congrats on the win Scooterman!

Don't want to rain in the SUNYAC parade but reliable sources are saying daily testing , among other things, will be the standard 1/1. I'm feeling a repeat of last year coming

Looking at the data, the three largest counties hosting SUNYAC schools [Erie, Monroe, Ulster] have vaccination rates in the mid 70's vs. a statewide average of 82%.  The 7 smaller counties [(Chatauqua,Oswego,St. Lawrence,Clinton,Livingston,Otsego,Cortland] with SUNYAC schools have vaccination rates for the most part in the low to mid 60's.

While the campuses are for the most part fully vaccinated, that would say the vaccination rates in the overall population are still fairly low.

For example in my home county of St. Lawrence, we have 108K people, about 12K are college students, who are fully vaccinated, another 1-2K work at the colleges and are likely mostly vaccinated.  The math tells me the vaccination rate in the rest of the community is probably below 60%.

Omicron is showing signs of infecting even vaccinated and boostered people.

I do feel for the student athletes, who have sacrificed much over the past two academic years.

Thank you guys for the Congrats. I am sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. I have had some shoulder surgery issues and wasn't able to attend the games. The Eagles did play two solid teams and came away with 2 W's. Everyone have a Happy New Year and lets get ready SUNYAC competition. It looks to be an interesting year in the SUNY's!!!!! Go Bport!!!!!

Scooterman; Hope you are on the mend.

Noticed that freshman PG Akhee Anderson (former NYS Class B HS player of the year) was a DNP for the Lakers yesterday in their win over RPI
.
Starter Jordan Brown 16 mins/gm was also a DNP.

It seems the very talented Jeremiah Sparks morphed into a point forward.

Lakers are second in the country in Scoring defense at 54.7 ppg.  Def have an old school style.

As noted RPI was missing some pieces, but Lakers were also down 2 starters.

Thinking the SUNYAC will go through Laker Hall this year.

Oswego putting a thumping on host St. John Fisher at Halftime in Pittsford.
Lakers - 44 Cards - 25.
SJF top player Daniel Cook [21.5ppg] held to 3 pts in 17 minutes of action.
Lakers led by Devin Green with 11 and Julien Crittendon with 10.
Brendan Trapper and Ian Duncan each had 10 for Fisher, which saw only 4 players score.
Oswego's defense is ranked #2 in the country, and seems like the real deal.

Will be a nice win for the 'yac.

Final Oswego State 83 St. John Fisher 70.

Fisher cut a 19 point halftime deficit to 9, then Oswego won the free throw shooting contest.

Fisher got called for a technical at 2:08 and another with 1:00 left down 9, and that was a back breaker.
[game was at Fisher]

Green and Crittendon led the Lakers with 22 each.

Brendan Trapper led Fisher with 20.
