i dont think mitchell would leave potsdam, his wife is the DA up there. anyone heard how practices have went? any new comings and goings?

retired12

I am aware of his wife's lofty North Country status, but a rumor was out that he was interested.

slickyquick

well i understand your concern for your former coach but i think he's got a cushy job at potsdam. how's med school going?

jdex

Cortland gives good account in scrimmage vs. Hobart, whose Statesmen make the trip on snowy night. Weather delays start, but not the Red Dragons. Hosts win opening half by about 10. Second half even on last-second Hobart hoop.

Cortsl certainly with different look, as in smaller. But it's a good shooting, quick and deep outfit. Headley, Jutton, Maggiacomo, Fish, Jankiewicz lead the way. Returning soph C. Niehoff up front with Q. Merritt. Couple of 6-5 frosh from Syracuse area will play including 240-lb P. Oliver once his football season concludes.

Next up: Scrimmage with Nazareth Nov. 12

Does anyone think the Cards will go back to back ?

jdex

From early reports it appears Pburghers definite favorite. Supposedly 11 returnees!

How bout Oswego Perioli's status from serious early summer knee trouble?

go_cards

Wow without Nick Oswego could be in trouble. Who will be the back up?

Can Plattsburgh go far without GS?
Gorham and williams will have to step up big time.

My top 4 teams

1-Cortland
2-Plattsburgh
3-Buff State
4-Brockport

What do everyone think?

jdex

1. Cortland is a stretch. Lost a bunch up front in Ranieri and Taggart, plus key swingman Skrelja -- super sixth man. Will be respectable, maybe more should youth arrive inside.

Sure have to look at Plattsburgh's veteran dotted array. Awful early to get a line on others, BUT don't sleep on New Paltz. Dougie P. is all smiles, and for more reasons than he took a bride on 9/9. Hawks bring back a slew -- J. Hauser (15.4 ppg, 6 rpg, 80 assists), bro M. Hauser, guard M. Irwin (10.2 ppg), J. Sugrue among brigade. But key figure will be 6-6 A. Foluke-Henderson, who missed last season after 16.3 ppg, 7 rpg previous winter. Hefty frosh crew featuring 6-6 pair, 6-5 pair. AND NP has 12/31 date in Hawaii (honeymooning?) vs. D2 Chaminade. Yes, that Chaminade, which hosts Maui Invite this month and meets UCLA in first round!!

Geneseo was senior-less last season with a team including McDonell, Spears, Bennett, Scieera, T. Kitson (SUNYAC top rookie two years back), Kelly, Muchnick.

Fredonia has seven holdovers led by Alassari (13 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 79 assists), Gordon, Moore

Always interesting at Buff St. Bengals certainly lead `name game' -- Ishmael Skylark ripe for `Boomer's list? He's junior guard from CA. Also have Kojo, Pee Wee, Californian DJ and Bubba. Vets include 6-6 sr. Dante Griggs (10.4 ppg, 5 rpg), 6-4 swingman C. Hepburn, 6-6 Dion Mozelle (12.7 ppg), and sr. guard Jay Wingate

FisherDynasty

Sleeper team in the SUNYAC is Geneseo, lot of returners and play well diciplined ball.  my projections are:

Geneseo
Potsdamn
Plattsburgh
Buff state
Cortland

slickyquick

Geneseo also has a big guy from last year that started coming on toward the end of the year to take away minutes from Sciera. His last name is Howe and I thought he was the best freshmen towards the end of last year. Also, Muchnick isn't with them anymore, last I knew he is patrolling the sidelines with Tommy S at Cortland and did so last year.

One thing on NP, they always seem to bring in huge freshmen classes and then they disappear after first semester and sometimes before that. Maybe their new facility will keep them there.

Potsdam loses Barton and Ducena, everything else is back including some promising sophomores who were freshmen last year.

Plattburgh will be a better TEAM without Gibbs-Smith. Who knows what type of juco's they brought in, usually talented ones though. Without question the team to beat. Curle has done an exceptional job bringing a mix of freshmen, jucos, and transfers.

Oneonta brings Heslin back for a 5th year. Is Reed playing again? The loss of Coffey could hurt them because of his deadly shooting, just ask Potsdam.

Buff St., who knows with them. The players they have back are extremely talented. I'm sure their incoming players are very good because anyone who can spell their name can get in there. Their talent could explode in more ways then one at any moment.

Cortland loses a ton scoring and leadership from graduation. They should reload and be good again how Spanbauer adjusts to his new team.

Brockport gets a couple of players back from suspension, both who have potential to be all league this year. Some transfers at mid-semester have always changed the face of the Eagles every year, who will they bring in next?

Fredonia lost quite a bit from last year's squad. Depending on their recruiting class it could be another tough one in cold and snowy Buffalo.

SUNYIT has Grimmer back in controls, lets just say thats a huge downgrade from current Northeastern assistant Tom Murphy. We'll see how the players adjust and how Grimmer handles having a ton of talent.

Oswego's outlook basically depends on having Perioli. If they don't have him, they could be in trouble. He has controlled that team for 3 years and I think Broderick was counting on him to finally make a run to the NCAA. Losing Mims will hurt but they do have the best big man in the league in Matt Burridge.

Well thats it for now, let's get some reports back from scrimmages and exhibition games soon.

jdex

Not exactly true that Cortland lost ton of scoring ........lost power in Ranieri and Taggart, and key swingman Skrelja, but much firepower returns.

Yes, Reed returning to Oneonta along with 6-7 Heslin. Both on injured reserve last winter. Oneonta also brings back league HM J. Murphy, 6-3 sr who averaged 11.8 ppg and 5.8 rpg, plus sr. M. Reardon, 6-7 soph R. Morin, E. Batt and others.

And, yes, don't think any foes will sleep on Geneseo. Plenty of vets

Utica Tech should frighten with C. Reaves (17.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 125 assists, 75 stls), C. LaBoard (14 ppg, 5 rpg), C. Plante (71x173 3s, 11 ppg) and A. Gilkes (10 ppg, 9 rpg).

Brockport has work to do. Lost Bellucci, Rother, Cheves, Amparo. Returns D. Maldonado (8.9 ppg) as 6-5 frontliner and D. Rubertone (8.8 ppg)

Potsdam probably has some recruits to replace some pretty fair losses. Among holdovers are 6-7 B. Siskavich (8.1 ppg) and backcourters S. Mitchell and D. Taft, plus 6-4 sr. J. Hall, 6-2 guard D. Brown (7.4 ppg), Reinhardt, Dike

slickyquick

you're right jdex, i thought jutton was gone too. i believe he is the trajan langdon of the sunyac, it seems like he has been there forever. though scoring might on the inside will be a factor, they did lose a ton of leadership with ranieri and skjeljia (sp?).

unbearable

Happy November, everyone!  Hope it has been a happy and healthy year for all of you.

If The Bear has any insights on Potsdam's squad, they would be much appreciated.

See you when the games begin.
Gee, I'm real sorry your mom blew up, Ricky. - Lane Myer

SUNYIT doesn't have the key ingredient...Coach Murphy.

I think thats a big difference in the 'Cats.

Jdex, if you remember, I thought highly of New Paltz last year with everyone returning. And they promptly went out and pooped it up. Unfortunately I think the same may happen this year. Doug is a good coach but I don't think the talent back is going to be the difference - it wasn't last year.

Plattsburgh has a lot back but loses Gibbs-Smith. That hurts. He and Anthony Williams were the heart and soul of that team down the stretch. They'll still be tough but I'm not sure they win it all again. Hard to improve upon their stretch run but not having Gibbs-Smith hurts.

Cortland, well, they're back like they were before Taggert. No presence in the middle and lots of guards chucking up three's. No Ranieri either. Hell of a job by Frank and Simon Skrelja to take that program from the basement of the conference up to the regular season champ and a NCAA playoff appearance. They'll be troublesome to opponents but without inside play, they won't have the special ingredient. I'm not sold on the Big Q down low after he came on this board and talked junk after the end of the season. He's got big shoes to fill. But, I think Maggiacomo-Jutton-Headley could be one of the best threesomes in the league.

It'll be some interesting times in the SUNYAC this year. I'm a little sad I won't be up at the Pete anymore. Oh well, it'll be 70 here in Virginia on Thursday. I'll survive LOL.

Rumors say that Plattsburgh has a D-1 transfers that plays the same as Mr. GS. Where do Curle find these good players?   ;D

Does anyone have a list of juco and transfers he has in the past?

This is going to be a good year for basketball.
