Was at Chase final last night and it looked like Geneseo ran out of gas.  No excuse as U of R played great and is a very good team--but I don't think 27 pts. better than Knights.  U of R really benefited from being able to rest starters the night before in the blowout over Fisher whereas Geneseo had a Double OT thriller and a gutsy win over Bport on its road to the final.  This Knights team is very good and has played the last 2 weeks without one of its top 2-3 players--Joe Kling.  They will challenge for the SUNYAC thiis year.  Now it's time for all teams to dig into the league schedule.  The great thing about this league is that anyone can be beat on any night--their are no gimme's.  Buff. State made a nice statement over the weekend that they are a force to be reckoned with and Oswego, Potsdam, Plattsburgh, SUNYIT, are all talented and will challenge Bport and Geneseo all season long.

U of R is a very good team. I agree not 27 points better than Geneseo, much they are not 29 points better than Fisher. I will say I think that they could win SUNYAC or the Empire 8 this year. Rochester has good big man and at times very good guard play. I would say that Rochester played very well in the Chase, perhaps over even their heads.
Geneseo is a good team this year. I think that they will be in the top 2 or 3 of the SUNYAC, but I do think that Brockport is a better team, and that they will win the league this year.

In the 3 main NY leagues this year I will take Brockport to win the SUNYAC, Fisher to win the E8, and Hamilton to win the Liberty league.
GO FISHER!!!

Three contests on Tuesday card: Fredonia at Geneseo, Brockport at Oswego as chart topper, and co-pacesetting Oneonta at SUNYIT

D. Maggiacomo's 10 3s (on 12 bids) on Saturday a Cortland school record. What's SUNYAC record?

unbearable

jdex,

Scouring the SUNYAC record book, good through the 2004-2005 season, the record appeared to be 8.  The record book only has stats from 1985 forward in some categories, but my recollection was that was the season the three-point shot was introduced at all levels.

http://www.sunyac.com/recordbooks/mensrecordbook04-05.pdf

Then, during the 05-06 season, the record was upped to 9.

http://www.sunyac.com/mensbasketball/05-06stats/CONFHILO.HTM

Therefore, it would seem as if the 10 is a SUNYAC record as well.  That is just my completely unofficial opinion.

Hope Florida is treating you well.  A wicked ice storm has left tens of thousands of us in the Capital District without power.  Good to see I'm using my electricity in a completely productive way.

And the winnahhhhh is ........

SUNYAC board says Oswego .......Bport says Bport ........

jdex

Geneseo far from best but gets job done. Leads 27-22 at half despite 6x23fg. Concludes 21x54fg, 22x30ft. G. Spears 14 pts(6x11fg); S.Morton 12 pts, 11 rebs; J. Segarra 8 pts(2x5 3s); B. Bennett 5 assts, 4 stls. Fredonia 15x43fg, 2x18 3s. K. Reichlmayr 12 pts(4x5fg), 12 rebs

jdex

Wishful thinking on Bport part. Oswego prevails at home. Strikes for 62 pts in second half (29ft) to overcome 48-40 Eagles edge at half. E. Robertson 20 pts, T. Downing 16, T. Franze 16, M. Burridge 15, K. Reuter 14. Shawn Harris 22 paces Bport. C. Parrish 14

Oneonta holds 34-31 break lead on B. Fisk trey. IT up 9 in second half before OSt seizes 9 pt lead at 3:40 and holds on. IT last ditch hoop falls short. Fisk 19 pts. For IT E. Belone 21 pts; C. Reaves 15 pts, 9 assts, 1 trnvr in 38'; C. LaBoard 13 pts, 9 rebs, 5 stls; A. Gilkes 13 pts, 10 rebs

Brockport defensive strategy: if it's  moving, foul it; if it's not moving, hit it until it moves and then foul it. I saw the Geneseo box: Brockport whistled for 40 fouls, Geneseo with 59 FT attempts Hardly believed it. Tonight, 'Port whistled for 37 hacks, slaps, grabs, sleeperholds, you name it - they did it, for 68 Laker FTs.

Oswego down 48-40 at the half but Brockport simply would not allow Oswego to lose. The Eagles continued to foul until even the hapless Lakers (38 of 62) made enough FTs to win.

Over the last 2 games Brockport opponents have had a combined 102 charity tosses. Didn't see the Geneseo game but the Eagles earned every one of the whistles tonight, frequently fouling 2 or 3 times in succession, forcing a whistle from a crew that was reluctant to stop this eyesore yet once again.

On the plus side...Kyke Reuter gave the Lakers a nice spark in the second half after a brief but wholly forgetable first half appearance. Tom Downing dropped several seriously deep 3's to lead the Lakers 2nd half rally and Todd Franz shredded 'Ports guards with penetration. Laker frosh Mahamoud Jabbi impressed with solid minutes behind Matt Burridge who was in foul trouble for most of the night.

For the Eagles, . Junior guard Sherod Harris and soph Shawn Harris are great to watch - both can go to the hoop - both can shoot. Seems like senior Dan Rubertone has been around for ever. Never spectacular but really works hard for everything he gets. Cantrel Parrish, another fine looking freshman.

Please, someone from Brockport help me with this...their 57 man rotation is interesting (OK, its only 12). I guess the thinking is that if you have 60 available fouls, use 'em. Is there a grand design I'm missing, a method to the madness? Are these guys undisciplined and clueless or do they believe they can foul their way to a championship?

Im with ya Zola, I dont understand it either, but thats how bport has played the last 5 years, just pressure the heck out of ya, give up lay-ups try to force turnovers and outscore you.  Like i said before, if the refs are calling the fouls, if they are hitting their 3's, they win by trading buckets and can beat a lot of teams. However, that strategy is inconsistent and has been in the past, which also means they can get beat by a lot of teams that handle the pressure.

Thanks, Unbearable, for `3' data. McDonnell not quite as prolific (reckless?) as his Geneseo days dwindle. But, then again, he doesn't have to be. More contributors now for Knights. Speaking thereof, McDonnell missing from last night's rather easy win over Fredonia

And, Florida fine. But today sinking to about 70 high after near 80s. Chill setting in, but you north country guys know all about that. Sorry!

Bport website finally owned up to loss.

Great post, Zola. Loved it!

Jdex Wakeup temp in the Potsdam 'burb's this morning was -16f.  Wind chill in the high -20's low -30's.  Enjoy basking in the Fla sunshine, you've earned it.

Zola - wonder how different what 'Port is doing vs. the so-called Grinnell system.
They try to launch 3's within 10 secs, and press full-court the whole game.

SUNYAC season proving to be one of those years where there will be a bunch of teams lumped very closely.  Surprised that 'port already has two losses.

Buff St. could be a sleeper here, they are out of the gate quickly, have talent, and by quirk of schedule are spared from a trip to Potsdam (where they haven't won in several years) this year.

To clarify on the Maggiacomo three-point record mentioned above...the SUNYAC record book that's being referenced is for SUNYAC tournament games only. There is no compiled list of records for the SUNYAC that includes regular season games, as far as I know. I don't know, therefore, if Maggiacomo's 10 three-pointers are a league record; I just know that it's a school record.

Thanks Fran, you're right.

There were many career stats in that record book, so when I scrolled down through the .pdf file I missed the transition to tournament records.  Must have been frostbite on the brain from the ice storm.

Can probably count on more interesting results tonight when Oswego is at Oneonta, SUNYIT at New Paltz, and Potsdam at Buffalo State. And Cortland is at Geneseo, Plattsburgh at Fredonia

Brockport back on court Saturday at Oneonta joining Pburgh at BS, Geneseo at NP, Oswego at Corts, Pdam at Freds. Sunday finds IT hosting Morrisville
