I'd rather be 15-2 in "old" Memorial gym, than have a 3000 seat arena and be 2-15.

When the state decides to build a "new" facility (not the A.D.) at Plattsburgh or replace the rubber floor at the field house with a soild wood floor, then maybe you'll get your wish.    Have you ever been to St John Fishers gym ?

bball12

Hey the gym at New Paltz is going to be great to bring recruits into. Give New Paltz a year or two to get things going they have a head coach that works his but off.  He is going to get it done there. And their is no reason to give a negative shot at new paltz.

Isn't that 60 game undefeated streak by Potsdam the longest or 2nd longest of all time?

Longest in D-III, second only to UCLA (88 games)

Good to get a W, been a while.  Be nice to get two road wins.

Haven't done the math, but think Coach Dobbs and the Bears would rather have a 3 seed (Cortland) than a four (Cards).

A win at Oneonta would really tighten up the battle for the 3-4 seeds, since the two teams have basically identical schedules left.

As for Memorial Hall, the center of campus location cetainly makes it attractive for getting people to the games.

Competitive basketball isn't made to be played on rubber floors, especially 35 year old rubber floors.  Surprised there isn't a major product liability scandal with the number of ACL's that happen on rubber floors, especially amongst the women players.

Some rough math just based on some quick facts! Check me if I'm wrong

Potsdam lost to Buffalo State in the SUNYAC championship games of 84-85.         84-85 National runner up lost to North Park by 1.
Went 32-0 85-86 18-0 SUNYAC National Champion!!!
Went 28-1 86-87 17-0 SUNYAC Didn't play second Albany game (measles on Albany Campus, Doc Sauers was not a happy camper, he wanted Albany to end both streaks) 60 straight wins second to UCLA (88)
87-88 had graduated but I believe they didn't lose until the second semester.
I say around 40+ games straight.  Looks like Plattsburgh has a ways to go.

Good Luck!

By the way New Paltz is 6-12. I agree they will win recruits with the new diggs.

Hoping for 2 upsets this weekend New Paltz beats Plattsburgh and the Giants beat the Patriots.

I think the number is 44, but I'll check.  It's on my portable hard disk, which isn't hooked up at the moment.

I seriously doubt that Good players make a decision to go to a school because of a gym.
St John Fisher, U of R and even Plattsburgh don't get the talent they get based on their facility.
The Palestra at U of R has been there for more than 50 years. The U of R (private college ) has
multi-millions of dollars and hasn't built a new arena despite its basketball programs (mens and womens)
success.

No recruit I ever talked to when giving tours around campus at Plattsburgh ever made a
decision about coming to Plattsburgh because of the field house or Memorial hall.  One would
hope their decisions were based on educational needs, style of play, coach and reputation.

Back in the mid-70's Oneonta "did" play in a high school-like gym and had extremely successful teams.
Now they play in the beautiful new arena and are mid-pack SUNYAC at best.  And they used to fill
that little old gym.  I saw the web-cast of the PBurgh v Oneonta game last night and the place looked
empty.

As far as giving a "negative shot" at New Paltz, the shot was generic to any less successful teams playing
in hugh new facilities. New Paltz has won more than 2 games and it's not because of a new place to play.

Regarding Potsdam's SUNYAC win streak (including SUNYAC playoff games)
35-0 from 85-87 plus

1987-88 -  3 SUNYAC wins before break.  Loss at Scranton.  1st home loss was during winter break in an empty gym at Maxcy to University of Buffalo, 75-70.  This ended a home-court winning streak that was (I think) 57 in a row, including league, non-league, and playoff games.  However, I'm pretty sure that they were out of DIII and out of SUNYAC at that point.  My recollection was that they left SUNYAC a few years before Albany and Binghamton did, as the university centers began their ascent to DI.

Then, 10 more SUNYAC wins in a row.  So, if UB doesn't count, my guess is 48 SUNYAC wins in a row.

For true basketball junkies, at Utica Tech (now SUNYIT) sometime in mid-January, we were down 17 with 1:46 to go and won by one point.  It still remains, in my opinion, as the greatest basketball comeback at any level of play.

A few years ago, my brother, who lives in State College, PA, called me to tell me he met an ex-Utica Tech player who was on the losing side in that game.  That player (Rudy something?) now coaches school ball in central PA, and still uses that game as an example as why it is important to never give up.

The streak ended on the last weekend of the '87-'88 regular season.  We lost to New Paltz on the Friday night before the big game at UAlbany.  A good lesson in why its important to not look ahead.  Still beat Albany 70-68 the next night.  :)

Cards7580,
your 100% right you need more than just a nice gym to get recruits.  You need to be able to sell your school as a whole like you said.  But when your academics are just as good if not better it all helps.

unbearable - I'll check the bball yearbooks in my library, and get an exact determination.

Yeah - that's a legendary comeback.  What's amazing is that the SUNYIT coach never called a time out during that stretch.  Think "Havlicek stole the ball" to the 6th power.  Of course, Steve Babiarz was playing in front of the hometown crowd, and wouldn't think about losing.

I remember the 88 game against Albany.  The whole Albany football team sat behind the Potsdam bench, making so much noise it was impossible to hear.  So Jerry Welsh had his players move their chairs out to the paint opposite his bench during the time outs so he could be heard.  My wife, who's a good sport, and one of Jerry's favorite people, couldn't stand it, she left midway through the first half & went to Crossgates to shop and see a movie, picked me up after the game!

It also is very helpful to recruiting when a college will admit anyone.

"...It also is very helpful to recruiting when a college will admit anyone...."

Please ...   You must be too young to remember Pop's McTaw at Brockport some of the
other questionable students who were there under Coach Panaiggio.

It's amazing that ALL the colleges want or wanted the "dummies" you have referring to
in previous posts about the same subject. By the way, how do YOU know what their GPA's
are in High School or College ?  Please refrain from making idiotic comments about who IS
and who ISN'T a qualified college student academically without knowing the TRUE facts
about their situations and providing proof that you even know what you are talking about.

Halftime - Potsdam 36 Oneonta 20.

Bears are pressing & running - best I've seen them play since early in the season.

However, no lead is safe on the road in the SUNYAC.

Dragons & Bears are scrapping for the 3&4 seeds in the East.

Thanks to Oneonta - webcast is great.

Bears win 62-59.

Oneonta ties at 59 with 2.7 secs.

Bears throw the home run, and Damon Brown makes a contested 21 footer at the buzzer for the victory.
