Plattsburgh State took care of bisiness tonight winning their quarter-final matchup against Fredonia. Cards grabbed an early 9-2 lead and were never headed. 1st half stayed fairly close as Fredonia matched Plattsburgh basket for basket throughout. Cardinals hitting 3's and Blue Devils scoring inside. Was a 3pt. game when Antwane Miller hit a 3 with 1 sec. left in the half to send the Cards in at the break up 36-31. Cards came out flying to start the 2nd period and extended their lead to as much as 18. Fredonia would cut it to single digits only to have Plattsburgh build it back up. Plattsburgh up by 13 with 3:30 to go and Fredonia coach decided not to do the foul train thing. Anthony Williams again led the Cardinals with 26 pts on`10x22fg, 2x7 3's, 6 assists 3 rebs, 2 steals. Khylan Hunt had 14 pts. 4x9 fg, 2x4 3's, 9rebs.  Antwane Miller added 11 pts. 4x7 fg, 2x2 3's. Travis Gorham 13 rebs, 4 pts. 4 stls. Cards 26x59 fg 7x19 3's. Fredonia was led by Rich Buckmon with 13 pts on 4x9 fg, 2x4 3's. Kyle Gordan had 11 pts on 5x9 fg 4 rebs, 3 assts. Julius Bryant and Wayne Davis each had 10 pts and 5 assts.

Magic- I thought I was the only one up this late???!!!  Or are you (gasp) the dreaded early riser??? Gutsy pick Bears over Lakers, I like it!!!

Normally I'm  a night owl, but these past few weeks I've been both as I'm training a new golden retriever puppy. 5 to 5:30 AM he wakes me up and outside we go. It wasn't really gutsy. I promised  "thebear" 3 wks ago that Potsdam was going to win enough games at the end of the season to move up the standings and grab the 6th seed so they wouldn't have to face Bport or Pburgh in the Quarters. Hoped for an upset at Oswego so the Bears would be in the final four and "thebear" would have to make the trek over to Plattsburgh. Almost got my wish. Are you coming up for the weekend? I believe there will be a block of tickets available for each of the schools in the semis.

Hey Magic--I think I called them all tonight!! Friday will be Bport over Oswego and the Burg over Geneseo--two games determined by 6 pts or less!!

I think conference tournaments are the domain of the individual conferences, not the NCAA.  You can't fault their cheapness for the SUNYAC's hosting decisions.

And while I haven't seen the SUNYAC tournament since they moved to campus venues, I think leaving the Aud was a good idea.  Even as a neutral site it was a long drive for the North Country and West NY schools.  The venue was clearly built for hockey and the dank, cold atmosphere didn't do much for enthusiasm.

Yes, having schools host the semis has its problems, depending on the host (i.e. too far away, too small).  On the distance issue, I think the conference tournament winner should get some hosting perks.  To the victors go some spoils.  On the size issue, there's a cost associated with using a neutral venue.  I doubt the marginal gate lost at a smaller venue would cover the costs associated with renting a larger one off campus.

gordan,
I agree with everything you've said and I've stated most of these ideas over the past couple of weeks when it looked more & more like Plattsburgh was going to be the host site. There has been lots of chatter complaining about the travel and the trip and the field house not being utilized but we've had to experience a lot of these same issues in years past.

Cards,
After speaking with some folks to the college there will be blocks of tickets alloted to the other schools in the semis. I believe that's also mandated by SUNYAC.

thebear,
I remember the Amherst trip. Lots of people complaining about the lack of parking, concessions, and poor playing facility.  And after this year if SUNYAC wants to consider the venue I have no problem with that. You just can't change the rules until the year is over.
Maybe if the tournament was held at the best SUNY facility not involved in the playoffs so that it truly was a neutral site but something tells me (Utica Aud.) if the local team isn't in the mix then the crowds will never be at or near capacity. The exception to that might be if one of the western schools is the site and most of the actual teams that are in the final four are all from that part of the state. It just seems that with most conferences, the reward for doing well in the regular season is home court advantage during the playoffs. Some years the venue is better than others, but you have to take the good with the bad. Of course you could always do away with the playoffs and just let the regular season decide the Conference Champion, as the UAA does. Then no one would be able to complain about where the playoffs are staged.

Are you sure? I must have missed that post. ;D  Just kidding. I saw your picks and changed mine so we both wouldn't be the same. ;)  Good job. Coming up for the weekend?

Magic -

As disappointed as I am that Plattsburg is hosting the league championship in a gym considerably smaller than Central Square High School, I am sure everyone agrees that they deserve to host the games. Sadly, these will be the first finals I've missed in many years given that I'm unwilling to make the 4.5 hour drive without a guarantee of tickets and 'Burgs refusal to take telephone orders. So it goes.

However, your statement that this is one of the strongest SUNY conferences in recent memory tickles my funny bone. Top to bottom, I didn't see much in the league either this year or last and believe that will be born out in the tournament. No one in the SUNYAC has the combination of size, skill, and mental toughness to make a serious run.

zola,

I'm surprised to hear you say that. I've apparently been watching a different SUNYAC conference than you have. Even D3Hoops commented that the SUNYAC conference was one of the up and coming stronger than usual conferences. Let's start at the top.

Plattsburgh St. Only undefeated in Region team in the country with a 21-0 regional record. Went to the NCAA's last year and beat UR  in the 1st round before losing to Fisher at Fisher in the 2nd round. Both Rochester and Plattsburgh have most of the same players returning for this year's squads. Plattsburgh has already locked up a bid to the NCAA's as has UR. Plattsburgh has victories over the top team in the Liberty League, SLU and 1 of the better teams in the NESCAC league, Middlebury both of whom have a good shot at getting bids

Brockport St. is currently ranked 3rd in the East Region and stands to receive a Pool C bid. Last year they won three games to advance to the great 8 and lost in overtime in their effort to make the final four. They return most of that team. They were also ranked nationally for 5 or 6 weeks climbing as high as #11 before sliding out of the top 25. They now stand around 31st.

Oswego St. now sporting a 19-6 record and ranked #7 in the East. 3 of those 6 losses at the hands of Pburgh and Bport. If the Lakers win the SUNYAC tournament it's possible that 3 teams from the conference get bids. If not they will most likely play in the ECAC's and should end up with a 20 win season.

Geneseo St. Basically the same as Oswego. 19-7 record that included recent wins over Bport to end the regular season and now Cortland to advance to the semifinals in the SUNYAC tourney. Good chance they will end up with a 20 win season as well.

Cortland St. See above. 19-7 record and most likely headed to the ECAC's. Young team will be tough next year. Their 7 losses were all to quality opponents. Good chance for a 20 win season.

Potsdam St. Overall record disappointing but injuries throughout the season held them back. Still on any night capable of beating the top teams as evidenced by their wins over SLU and Ithaca.

Even New Paltz who only won 6 games all year and tied for last in the conference beat Keene State who beat then #2 ranked UMass-Dartmouth to end their 20 game win streak.

This year right now the SUNYAC I think has 5 of the top 10 ranked schools in the East Region. Don't believe that's been the case in recent memory, if ever.

I believe the SUNYAC conference will end up with 5 schools all posting 20 or more win seasons.
In checking the other top conferences around the country, none of the following can boast of this accomplishment. The UAA, NESCAC, WIAC, SCAC, CCIW, MIAA, NCAC, OAC, ASC, MWC, CC, MIAC,  and ODAC conferences. Many have just 1 team that will top 20 wins, some have 2, and several have 3, but none even have 4. We have 5. Almost all of the top 30 teams in the country belong to the above conferences. I stand by my earlier statement. If you don't see it that way, that's OK too.

And to ease your disappointment about Plattsburgh hosting the finals and missing them for the first time in years. How about this? I'll pick up tickets for you if you want to make the trip. E-mail me through the personal message service if you're interested. I'm sure we could work something out if you really want to attend.

That goes for the rest of you guys out there as well. Scooterman, With Age, Bports and any others. E-mail me if you want to attend but can't score tickets. I can probably help out. It's the least I can do for some die-hard fans like yourselves.

Sorry for the long post.  Good night and Good luck.
