SCIAC softball tournament field is set--

#1 Redlands
#2 Chapman
#3 La Verne
#4 Cal Lutheran

Tournament is double elimination May 14 through 16, with the May 14 games being played at the top 2 seeds before the remainder of the tournament is held at Redlands May 15 and 16


Friday, May 14 (double elimination)

Game 1:  #4 Cal Lutheran at #1 Redlands

Game 2:  #3 La Verne at #2 Chapman

La Verne's record per SCIAC website is 3-3 so even if they win tournament they are not eligible; is that correct?

You are correct, absent a waiver from the Championships Committee.  I am not aware that a waiver has been granted by the Championships Committee to La Verne.  La Verne did not start play until May 1.

If La Verne makes the SCIAC Championship final, then La Verne's opponent in that championship final gets the AQ no matter what happens.  La Verne could still win the conference title without the AQ, however.

AMCC Semifinal series Game 1 between the Altoona Lions and the Behrend Lions is underway.

The plan by the AMCC is to have both semifinal series complete by the end of the day today, even if one or both of those series have to go to a Game 3.

Game 2 now underway between Penn State-Behrend and Penn State-Altoona.

Game 2 between Mt. Aloysius and La Roche expected to start shortly after 2 PM Eastern.

2 PM Eastern update-- Bottom of first 2 outs, Penn State Behrend already leads 2-0 over Altoona on an RBI single and 2 Altoona fielding errors.  Behrend has a runner on second.

Note:  The Behrend play by play guy is mentioning "Medaille" when he really means "Mt. Aloysius" in talking about that other semifinal series. 

2:15 PM Eastern-- Bottom of second.  Another Altoona fielding error has made it Behrend 3, Altoona 0.

A sacrifice fly has just scored the Behrend fourth run.  Behrend 4, Altoona 0 after 2 innings.

2:35 PM Eastern-- Bottom of third.  Behrend has just scored the fifth run on a walk with the bases loaded and 1 out.  Behrend 5, Altoona 0 after 3 innings in Game 2.

Altoona may have to make a forced pitching change due to an injury to the starting pitcher of Game 2.  Game has been shortly delayed, but the bottom of the fourth is now underway with Altoona's starting pitcher still on the mound.

3:22 PM Eastern update-- Behrend 5, Altoona 1 after 5 innings, as the Liberty League semifinals (single elimination) are about to start at 3:30 PM Eastern with Skidmore at Rochester.

Mt. Aloysius is leading La Roche, 2-0, after 5 innings in Game 2 of the other AMCC Semifinal Best of 3 series.

3:38 PM Eastern-- Behrend has just scored their 6th run in the bottom of the 6th.  It is now Behrend leading, 6-1 in the top of the 7th with 1 out.

3:42 PM Eastern-- Final:  #3 Mt. Aloysius 2, #7 La Roche 0  Mt. Aloysius advances to the AMCC Championship series.

Final:  #1 Penn State Behrend 6, #5 Penn State Altoona 1.  Penn State Behrend also advances to the AMCC Championship Series.

The AMCC Championship Series (Best of 3) will be on Saturday with #3 Mt. Aloysius at #1 Penn State-Behrend.

3:56 PM Eastern update-- No score in Rochester after 1 1/2 innings as the other semifinal game between RPI and Ithaca is about to get underway.

4:25 PM Eastern update-- Rochester got out of a bases loaded nobody out jam with 2 strikeouts and a Skidmore runner thrown out at home.  Still 0-0 in Rochester, NY after 3 1/2 innings.

Still 0-0 in Ithaca, NY top 2 1 out.

4:42 PM Eastern commentary-- Very few hits so far.  Skidmore has 4 hits, Rochester has 3 hits, Ithaca has 1 hit, and RPI has no hits.

Rochester has runners at second and third with 1 out bottom of 5th.  Rochester just got their 4th hit of the day to get runners at the corners, and then the runner on first stole second.  Then, we just got a batter hit by the pitch and the bases are now loaded.

4:47 PM Eastern-- Rochester just scores their first run on a walk with the bases loaded.  Rochester now leading, 1-0.   Ithaca announcers have just announced the Rochester scoreline on their game feed.

4:50 PM Eastern-- 3 RBI bases clearing double just makes it Rochester 4, Skidmore 0 Bottom of 5th 2 out.  The next batter pops up to end the 5th inning.  Rochester 4, Skidmore 0 after 5 innings.  RPI and Ithaca still scoreless after 3 innings.

Liberty League Final score in the first semifinal (single elimination)

#1 Rochester 4, #4 Skidmore 0

Rochester will host the Liberty League Championship game on Saturday against the RPI/Ithaca winner.

RPI and Ithaca are scoreless after 5 innings in the other Liberty League semifinal.

5:44 PM Eastern-- Ithaca has scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th on 1 hit and 2 RPI fielding errors.

After 6 innings, it is now Ithaca 2, RPI 0, and RPI is down to their last 3 outs.

Final:  Ithaca 2, RPI 0  Ithaca pitcher Beth Fleming with her second no-hitter of the week.

Liberty League Championship Game (Single elimination) on Saturday will be #2 Ithaca at #1 Rochester.  One game, winner take all for the AQ.

Just an update on the information-- Thanks to WLCALUM83 for covering the OAC quarterfinals and American Rivers Conference play-in game today.

This concludes softball action for the day.  Tomorrow, my focus will be on the Empire 8 and Little East Day 2's, with maybe some Heartland Conference early morning watching.  Tomorrow starts a lot more softball action leading up to more AQs starting to get awarded as early as Friday.

Friday's May 14 doubleheader between Emory and Berry has been confirmed by both teams, with first pitch of the doubleheader to take place at 2 PM Eastern in Atlanta.

Officially, it is still games 10 and 11 on the docket for Emory, but at least the Eagles have a chance to conclude their spring with a couple of wins and prepare for next spring when the UAA resumes conference competition.

From the April 20, 2021 report of the DIII Championships Committee videoconference--

As you may or may not know, the DIII Championships Committee is recommending that in team sports, regionals be played at predetermined sites this spring if at all possible due to COVID-19 protocols.  This is nothing new-- the 2010 DIII Softball Tournament had regionals at predetermined sites, for example.

2 of 8 sites for the 2021 Softball Tournament were approved by the Championships Committee at their April 20, 2021 videoconference as predetermined hosts for this year's DIII Softball Regional round--

1.)  Millikin University in Decatur, IL.
2.)  East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, TX

Any other predetermined sites will be announced with the May 17th selection announcement.
