SCIAC softball tournament field is set--

#1 Redlands
#2 Chapman
#3 La Verne
#4 Cal Lutheran

Tournament is double elimination May 14 through 16, with the May 14 games being played at the top 2 seeds before the remainder of the tournament is held at Redlands May 15 and 16


Friday, May 14 (double elimination)

Game 1:  #4 Cal Lutheran at #1 Redlands

Game 2:  #3 La Verne at #2 Chapman

La Verne's record per SCIAC website is 3-3 so even if they win tournament they are not eligible; is that correct?

You are correct, absent a waiver from the Championships Committee.  I am not aware that a waiver has been granted by the Championships Committee to La Verne.  La Verne did not start play until May 1.

If La Verne makes the SCIAC Championship final, then La Verne's opponent in that championship final gets the AQ no matter what happens.  La Verne could still win the conference title without the AQ, however.

Since I last posted this statement, I was able to read the January 21, 2021 report of the DIII Championships Committee videoconference in which the Championships Committee stated that a conference sponsoring a spring sport would not lose its AQ for this year's tournament if the conference intended to conduct its season with a minimum of 4 core members and demonstrate a schedule at the start of the season that would allow the AQ to meet its minimum contest requirements.  If after the schedules are submitted, COVID-19 issues later on in the season prevent a core member team from meeting its minimum number of contest requirements, then the AQ is not affected.  I initially thought otherwise.

Upon reviewing the report, it became obvious to me that what I stated earlier was a mistake.  If a team fails to meet its minimum contest requirements, it must apply for a waiver to the Championships Committee to be considered for an at-large selection only (Pool B and Pool C).  The waiver issue does not apply to the AQ.  So, La Verne does not have a problem with going into NCAAs as the AQ of the SCIAC, but is not eligible for a Pool C selection due to not meeting the minimum number of contests.  My mistake.

Alfred is the designated home team this game for scoring purposes. 

In the top of the first, Alfred pitcher Jessica Wllcox pitched a 1-2-3 inning and shut down the Cardinals.

After 1/2 inning, the Saxons coming up to bat.

Pitching for St. John Fisher is Jess Patterson.

Ashley Lugo of the Saxons opens up the bottom of the first with a base hit.

Alyssa Guitron successfully hit a bunt single-- Runners at first and second nobody out.

Tatiana Mejia hit by the pitch to load the bases for the Saxons.

Mya Wells hits an RBI single-- Alfred leads 1-0, bases still loaded with nobody out.

Another RBI single followed by a wild pitch, and it is now Alfred 3, St. John Fisher 0

Alfred has 3 runs and 4 hits-- still nobody out-- bottom of first.

Another walk has loaded the bases again for the Saxons with nobody out.

1:19 PM Eastern-- Alfred leads, 6-0, after 5 innings.  Alfred is the designated home team for scoring purposes this game.

1:45 PM Eastern-- Final: #3 Alfred 6, #1 St. John Fisher 0  Alfred's Jess Wilcox with a 7 hit shutout.

Alfred advances to Saturday needing 1 win to win the AQ.

#1 St. John Fisher plays #2 Russell Sage next in an elimination game-- the winner will need to defeat Alfred twice on Saturday to win the AQ.
