We now have a rules delay, as Cassie Woods of Eastern Connecticut may have interfered with a play in sliding into third while trying to escape a pickle. There was definitely a collision between Woods and the Tufts 3rd baseman, and Woods was trying to get the ball to escape the third baseman. The ball definitely came out as a result of the play. Umps are trying to see if that is allowable under NCAA rules. The question is: Is Woods out for interference (in which case we have 2 out), or did Matyasovsky get a base hit and get runners on first and third with 1 out?

They have overruled the initial ruling on the field that ruled Woods safe. Cassie Woods is out at third for interference. Contact above the shoulder. Matyasovsky is on first.

Bottom of 7th 2 out.

I was reminded of Billy Martin, Earl Weaver, and/or Tommy LaSorda during that sequence--

I just took a look at the play again through NSN's on demand system. On replay, it looks clear that Cassie Woods of Eastern Connecticut was caught in a rundown between shortstop, the second baseman, and the third baseman. The Tufts third baseman had the ball in her glove and would have tagged her out, but for the collision between Woods and the third baseman. The ball popped out of the glove as a direct result of the collision. It looks to me that Cassie Woods was out as a result of interference, and that the umpires eventually got the call right.

A protest can be filed if the protest is charging that the interference rule is misinterpreted, but a protest cannot be filed solely on a judgment call of interference/not interference or if the runner is out or safe.

A tough, controversial call, but I believe the right one.

Update: It looks like the NSN crew has agreed with me on this one, as Tufts vs Husson is about to get underway.

Tufts is the designated home team for this game-- Game 10 of the Bangor, Maine regional.

Of note: If Husson wins this game (Game 10), Tufts has the right to demand that Game 11 be postponed to tomorrow, as that would constitute the third game of the day for Tufts. The NCAA does recommend that the final game of the regional be postponed to the next day if to not do so would constitute a team playing 3 games in one day. This rule does not apply if weather had postponed all 3 games of the final day to Monday, as tomorrow is the drop-dead date for the regional to end.

After 1 inning, Husson 0, Tufts 0

In the bottom of the first, Husson pitcher Jen Jones struck out the Tufts side, getting her 600th college career strikeout on out #2 of the inning.

Jen Jones will be at bat to start the second inning for Husson.
