Are there any D3 teams running this offense? I know Colorado College once did and Wabash did as well--but any current squads?

Pat Coleman

I don't think anyone in D-III has run it for some time. Someone currently in the NCAC ran it as well ... now I am not sure which team.

The late Keith Piper was the last college holdout and ran it at Denison until he retired in 1992. Don't believe any college team runs it currently from a strict standpoint - although the shot gun - spread - wildcat can look a lot like it and can have many of its elements as does the Delaware wing-T, which the University of Delaware itself hasn't run for years.

Frank, the Wildcat formation sure has a lot of single wing aspect to it.  Fun to watch.  When my Dad played, they had 2 tight ends, an unbalanced line and all of the backs were tight behind the line.

There is a website for the single wing and a national organization.  http://spinningsinglewingfootball.com/

There was a high school team in Houston some years ago that would run the single wing in warmup, but never in the game.  A coach told me it drove him crazy because they had to prepare for the possibility.

Below are two additional single wing sites (fortunately, neither has any Latin text):

As far as I know there are high schools in Virginia and Michigan running the single wing.

up until at least 3 yrs ago a west alabama private school ran a single wing for short yardage-red zone, they ran a wingT most of the time

they had a series of all state linemaen (several played or are playing D-1) that were used to unbalance the line (as yall know part of a single wing), they did no spinning just a direct snap to either a fullback or tailback and the other 2 backs were just gonna block on the side with 2 tackles

my sons highscool team played them 3x in 2 yrs (reg season and playoff 2x0 and we were hammered, the way they would line up in it, quickly , the kids on the field were caught off guard as the center had only 2 fellers on one side, as our kids were trying to set up...they would run a play.... they were well coached

they made a run of 3-5 continous state championships...but, again, mostof the time they ran a wing T

The best story was Osbourn installing it on the heels of a 32-game losing streak. They used it to rise from the ashes and win the state championship in Virginia's largest classification four years later, although apparently they switched to the spread the year they won it.

Their rival was running something with elements of it, but Osbourn installed it with the spinning and the not having a steady quarterback (although there was a best player who got a majority of the snaps)

Definitely cool to see.

The coach at the local Catholic HS has been running variations of the single wing for years. He's won a couple of state championships and had a couple more runners-up, and last Friday he got his 300th win.

Interesting experience with the Colorado College single wing ...

CC was running the single wing when Millsaps went to call in 1975 in the playoff quarterfinals.  CC ran it well though they lost to Millsaps and All-American QB Ricky Haygood running an I-formation veer offense - believe it was 28-14.

What was hilarious was watching the Millsaps offense trying to run that single wing in preparation for that game.  Usually the defense didn't have to simulate a tackle because the offensive guys were running into each other anyway!

CC dropped the single wing a couple of years after that I understand.

Fast forward about 25 years ...

Colorado College starts play in what is now the SCAC and brings back its single wing ... Millsaps coaches just pull out the old film ... same result!

I know it is not the single wing but has anyone heard of any programs running the Wishbone?  There are a couple of small high schools in NJ that have been using it in recent years due to small numbers of players.

Austin College in the SCAC runs it as their primary offense.

And run it well, they do!

Mississippi State ran the wishbone yesterday against LSU when they were on the goalline.
