I'm confused. What is the rule about naming recruits/commits? I had heard that you couldn't release a list of names because there are no actual letters of intent or official signing days. Recently though, I've seen schools naming their recruitson d3football.com ???

Mr. Ypsi

As far as I know there is no rule.  Some schools release lists once recruits have made a deposit.  Others (IMO more realistic) don't release anything until they actually show up for drills.  (Some, probably most realistic of all, release nothing until they survive drills! ;))

I've personally seen some very talented guys who could've been contributors as FR who quit during preseason because they just want to get hammered and comingle with coeds, so it kind of doesn't make sense to release a list early in DIII.

The Division III rule is you cannot publicize a recruit until he/she has paid her deposit to attend.

The past two seasons when Linfield has announced their incoming Freshman they clearly state that the players have paid their deposits and are intending to play at Linfield

Linfield College head football coach Joseph Smith announced the intention of 45 young men to play football for the Wildcats Tuesday. All 45 prospects have paid their deposit to the college and are expected to enroll for classes in August.

In Divison III, the only recruiting list that counts is the team's roster on the first day of preseason practice. On any given year, a number of so-called recruits turn up as no-shows, or show up in another school's football program.  If you want to talk about recruiting lists, how about Mount Union who annually bring in more freshman than the population of a small town in northern Wisconsin!

I've been in small town southern Wisconsin and their pretty small.  I imagine the closer you get to Canada and Lake Michigan, the smaller the towns get as well

Ok. Thanks Pat and wildcat11 :) That definitely makes sense.

In local media releases you can not state that a recruit has signed with ABC University. You can use the term commits or has accepted academic scholarship or has accepted financial aid package to attend.
